I was in the mood to find a good Latin recipe book and found this one.I thought I would buy it based on the feedback of other chefs etc on the back of the cover. They were right. This guy is good and he has versatily and innovative recipes. Nice pictures good instructions and not too complicated. You can find most of the ingredients easily from local store or a latin/mex market/ store. There not just ones you know about but ones I never heard of. Yje Huevo Aji I rated 9/10 and is great with eggs and more. The Tamarind serrano majo I rated 9.5/10 and was great. There are so many more I want to try. Take a look at this book if you want to try some new latin flavors!

I gave this cookbook a workout this weekend. I tried two appetizers -- cheese dip and grilled pork. This started the meal off right, as my guests cleaned-up every bit.

We moved on to the honey-mustard, fried-plantain crusted lamb, which is an incredible taste combination. (I complemented this with a corn recipe from another cookbook.)

The meal ended with the best chocolate dessert EVER: Chocolate Pound Cake. At one point, one of my friends exclaimed, "I'm not eating another bite because I just reached heaven." My husband and I have been fighting over the remains.

THUMBS UP for Mr. Rodriquez!

P.S. I have a leg of lamb from this book marinating in the frig now. It smells incredible.

The Buena Vista Cocktails, Mole-rub Turkey Tenderloin and Chocolate Pound Cake are all excellent. This book is well-designed and beautifully presented. I have also made extensive use of Rodriguez's ceviche book. Can't go wrong with either of these. The more exotic ingredients are worth the search. Happy eating.

New York chef Douglas Rodriguez, known for his bold flavors and flashy, sophisticated approach to Latin cuisine, turns his attention to grilling in this beautifully illustrated, oversize book, full-page photos accompanying many recipes, from the Bacardi Cocktail to the Passion Fruit Trifle.

The backyard hamburger gets a makeover with ground pork and chile, cumin and coriander; boneless beef short ribs are served with an opal basil chimichurri; mango barbecue sauce perks up frogs' legs or grilled pork.

Most of the recipes call for some preparation time in the form of sauces, marinades or relishes. Mussels in Banana Leaves, for instance, requires a saffron reduction to be added to a softened butter, the banana leaves to be cut in a rectangle, dotted with saffron butter and thyme before being folded around the mussels, the packages then wrapped in foil and grilled. Follow this with Grilled Lobster with Coconut-Ginger Mojo or a classical Paella and you may be too tired to eat.

Simpler recipes abound though - Cornish Game Hen with Honey Mustard Garlic Cilantro Glaze is marinated in the glaze a day ahead; Ham Steak with Grilled Pineapple Tomatillo Salsa, Shrimp with Avocado Horseradish Salsa, Salmon with Dill Chimichurri.

Among the sides are a Spicy Radish Slaw, Yucca Hash Browns, Grilled Hearts of Palm and Cherry Tomato Salad. Breads include arepas, flatbreads and cornmeal biscuits and desserts, while not grilled, go well with the spicy fare: Cool Spiced Flan, Espresso Cream. Rodriguez also includes grill basics - adobos, glazes and vinaigrettes.

A book for the cook who wants to dazzle.

A HUGE SPLASH OF SPAGHETTI

It's safe to say that this book is easy to digest while the film of the same name will probably make you regergitate everything you just digested. A film full of symbolism, mythology, and a high doze of violence & "GORE." The book is an in-depht psychological break down of EL TOPO while the film deals with the abstract and supernatural. Think of the TV show "Kung-Fu" with a layer of Antonioni's "Zabrisky Point" a sprincle of Jim Morrison's "HWY" with a huge splash of spaghetti "For a Few Dollars More" and a red dash of "Apocolypse Now."

I personally have a DVD copy of EL TOPO from a Japanese import and would expand on the film but this book does more justice to this cult classic....

Even better than the movie.

This rare book is even better than the cult movie on which it's based. The first half of the book is the screenplay; there are many B+W photos to help you picture what the characters look like, which is quite nice since there are some pretty weird characters.

In the screenplay, Jodorowsky has added notes and descriptions in between the lines dialogue. This is extremely helpful as it helps make clear the many metaphors in the movie. Whereas in the actual film some of the scenes and symbols are unclear and are kind of cheesy due to the movie's low budget, Jodorowsky's writing makes the scenes come alive and makes them more meaningful.

The second half of this book is an interview with Jodorowsky, which is a treat because in his everyday speech, he talks like a poet.

If you can afford a copy, I would recommend this book for any Jodorowsky fan or anyone who likes cult movies.

I read this book in 1975, just after seeing the film. I have no idea if the movie would stand the test of time. I understand it was withdrawn from distribution and can no longer be seen. But at the time, I thought it was fantastic! The story of the gunslinger (as metophor for seeker of truth) fighting the other masters in the desert -- the strange cavern full of mutants -- all of it must be seen to be believed! A group of us went back and saw this film over and over again. I still don't know what it all meant, with its strange amalgam of sufism, buddhism, etc, but I wouldn't mind seeing it again. ADDENDUM: Well, I did see it again recently, and found it very difficult to watch. I assume those butchered animals were actually killed for the movie. It was interesting, but didn't work for me anymore. Boohoo!

I saw the film 28 years ago. It had an effect on me immediately and ever since. I still remember vividly the scene where El Topo falls into a volcanic crater and lands in a village isolated and suffering from lack of genetic diversity. The scene with the whips. The silver star under the hero's heart, facing the man who never loses. "Shoot him!" What a film!

Extremely useful set of forms and ideas for use in the restaurant industry. It is skewed towards full service restaurants; but still has lots of useful stuff to apply to QSR. Do not expect to find a treatise on training, though. The CD ROM helps to take advantage of the material because it has the full text on pdf format and several of the sections in MS-Word format.

The Encyclopedia of Restaurant Training is a no-nonsense, thorough resource covering the necessary training for all positions in the food service industry, from professional chef to maitre d to bartender and much more. Written in clear, easy-to-understand terms and charts spelling out explicit training instructions, and illustrated with some diagrams (such as a picture of how to properly set a formal table), The Encyclopedia of Restaurant Training spares no effort to be as understandable as possible. No background knowledge in any trade is needed to grasp explicit instructions ranging from a step-by-step breakdown of the hostess job to the proper order of service for a luncheon handout to how one can go about creating a memorable presentation to food service employees, and much more. A CD-ROM accompanies this absolute must-have for anyone preparing for a career in food service, or charged with the responsibility of training food service recruits.

THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF THE STONE-CAMPBELL MOVEMENT is a massive volume on the people, events, theology, and churches involved in the Restoration Movement. The work covers nearly every facet of the movement from the beginnings with Alexander Campbell and Barton Stone to the various sects in the Restoration Movement such as the United Church of Christ, the mainline Churches of Christ, the International Churches of Christ, the Disciples of Christ, and many more.

This work is an encyclopedia and thus is a reference book than a book you would enjoy reading from cover to cover in your bed at night. However, I found the articles to be interesting. Each subject is in its alphebetical order and I found the bibliography to be very helpful indeed. The writers are fair and balanced on each subject written. There were a few flaws I found with the work in that it couldn't cover every person I felt they could have nonetheless the authors are to be commended for their labours.

Overall this is a solid work. Those interested in reading on the Restoration Movement as a whole or simply want to know where the Movement stands on various theological issues will find this book very helpful. A good read for disciples of Christ.

This reference is a must have for anyone interested in the American Reformation (Restoration) Movement of the 19th century, involving Alexander Campbell, Barton W. Stone, Walter Scott, et al. The churches which sprung from this movement are generally called "Church of Christ", "Christian Church", or "Disciples of Christ". The entries are thorough, understandable and well referenced, yet they don't overkill. Covers a broad range of related topics and people.

The Churches of Christ, Christian Church and Disciples of Christ, ironically enough, all trace their origins back to the nineteenth century Christian reform and unity movement led by former Presbyterians Barton Warren Stone and the father and son team Thomas and Alexander Campbell. Known as the Stone-Campbell Movement, this tradition has a long and vaunted history, not just in the US, but around the world.

At last, a comprehensive, well-written, and readable encyclopedia of the Stone-Campbell Reformation is available. Long needed, this volume more than adequately meets its goal. The volume is edited by well-known, respected scholars of all three of the major branches of the Movement and written by scholars from within each of the segments, and contains a wealth of material on people, places and subjects relating to the Stone-Campbell Reformation.

Among the subjects, places and people treated are: Alexander and Thomas Campbell, Barton Stone, TB Larimore, FD Kershner, Moses Lard, Daniel Sommer, FD Srygley, Marshal Keeble, KC Moser; Silena Moore Holman; Foy Wallace, Jr.; RN Hogan; Caroline Neveille Pearre; a historical time-line for all three branches of the Movement; the historical attitudes towards restoration in the three branches of the Movement; historical attitudes toward women in the ministry among the three branches; women ministers such as Mary Stodgill and Jessie Colman Monser; attitudes on abortion and women's rights; attitudes on gay/lesbian rights in the Movement; Rice Haggard's influence on the Movement; the Scottish Haldanes and their influence on the thought of Campbell; the International Churches of Christ (Boston); the views on higher education among the three branches; colleges and universities of all three branches; founders of splinter movements and heresies such as Jesse Ferguson and John Thomas; the Movement's attitudes towards Shakers and Mormons; the Movemrent's attitude towards slavery and civil rights; Latino Disciples of Christ; missionary societies; Campbellian and Stoneite communion theology and eschatology; the Declaration and Address; the Stone-Campbell Movement in Great Britain, Russia, Australia and Canada; Hall L. Calhoun; David Oliphant; the Cane Ridge Revial's influence on Barton Stone; publishing houses of the three branches of the Movement; brotherhhod periodicals in the three branches; historical attitudes to missions and a history of missions; the movement's historical attitude towards creeds and confessions; devotional literature; Don DeWelt; etc.

In short, the volume contains articles on practically every facet of the churches comprising the Stone-Campbell Movement.

There are however, some seemingly glaring omissions; for example, from the Church of Christ branch alone one does not find articles on JN Armstrong; Yater Tant; the American Bible Union; or Thomas B. Warren and the Spiritual Sword. One choice made by the editors was to restrict articles only to deceased persons in order to avoid any kind of controversy. The reviewer is aware, however, that editorial choices must be made and are often difficult. Omissions are simply unavoidable.

Among other things, this volume adequately succeeds in pointing out just how diverse the traditions and churches comprising the Stone-Campbell Movement truly are.

All-in-all, the volume is a must-read for serious students of the Stone-Campbell Movement and mainstream American Protestantism in general. Eerdmans is to be commended for publishing such a work, and the editors and contributors commended for their herculean efforts at producing it. It should long serve its goal.

Jed Douglas has given us a wonderful book! In this day & age it is so important to provide our children with positive input. Just like adults, our children are being bombarded with the Information Age, & it's difficult to be sure what influences our children will be exposed to. FLEH is more than just a book. It is a tool that empowers kids. In reading this book they will learn to channel their imaginations, and to entertain themselves. They are guided gently toward the ideals of social consciousness. They are invited to have fun & gain a sense of how they connect their inner selves with the outer world. In building your child's library, you are building a foundation, & FLEH is just the material you want for a strong foundation. But more than being the right book, it is a fun book. So many children complain of boredom. FLEH teaches them how not to be bored with themselves, & that is a blessing for parents as well as children!

It's playtime anytime! Imaginative and Fun!

I encourage everyone to pick up a book since I remember playing games with my hand when I was a child.

I got so much out of reading this book that I am not sure where to begin. There is a lot of very valuable medical information, but more importantly it gives the reader a chance to get to know many interesting breast cancer survivors including the author. They all become friends along the way, and the reader learns a lot about living as a breast cancer survivor as well as being part of a support system. Anyone who is touched by this disease (which is just about everyone) will benefit from reading this book. I highly recommend it.

Breast cancer changes you. How it changes you depends upon your intrinsic personality, the people who love you, the medical professionals who care for you. "Foot Soldiers" is a book about change, challenge, hope, love, and courage. You know these women; you are caught up in their life-affirming stories. Narratives spill across the pages as participants in the Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk tell their stories during events in 10 cities in 2004. Women, sometimes their husbands, daughters, sisters, mothers, and friends share their stories. Author Deborah Douglas weaves her own breast cancer story among those of the other runners, sometimes to clarify medical information or to share her experience in empathy with a storyteller.
Dr. Douglas does it so subtly that the reader almost don't realize it is the author speaking - until you read a phrase that perhaps only a Texan could write --"radiation treatment knocked the straw out of me." While the tragic is inescapable, comic relief and an overriding sense of hope balance the poignant stories.
Inspiring, comforting, or provoking anger, the honesty of these stories help those of us who are touched by breast cancer know that we and our families are not alone, that it is important to pay attention to our instincts regardless of what the experts tell us. This book challenges us to live with hope, great courage, and great love.

This is a wonderful book and exceptionally well written. Dr. Douglas touched my heart with every new chapter in the lives of the people with whom she walked. Each story was filled with the bravery, fear and success of each of the participants whose lives she became a part of during the walks. But most importantly, it raised my awareness of how fragile our lives may be and how we must live each moment to its fullest. Cowboy hats, pink of course, off to her!!

In 2001, San Antonio pathologist, Deborah Douglas learned she had breast cancer. She had already lost her husband and her father to cancer. Now, it was her turn to face it.

Actually, she had been facing cancer for years. In an active pathology practice, she had seen hundreds of cancers under microscope, had been the one to so often make the decision: benign or malignant. After getting her own diagnosis, she decided to retire from her medical practice. She went through all the treatments, was pronounced cancer-free, and in 2004, as a way to prove to her family that she was fit and well, she decided to walk in one of the Susan Komen Foundations 3-Day Walk for the Cure events. She got online, registered for the first one, and then on an impulse, decided to register for all ten 3-Days to be held that year. Each 3-Day Walk is 60 miles, done in twenty-mile increments each day. Later came the idea to write a book of the experience. And what a book it is.

Divided into ten chapters, each chapter representing a different 3-Day city where Douglas walked, she tells the breast cancer story through interviews with other participants and cancer survivors that she meets at each of the events. At the end of each chapter is a montage of photographs taken of those who shared their stories. Layered in between, in short passages, Deborah's own story also emerges. The result is a deeply moving and compelling work of literature that also happens to be of vital medical importance.

All of the people in the book are cancer survivors in one way or another. Most have been diagnosed with breast cancer, but some are walking for loved ones they have lost. One young husband saw a poster for a 3-Day event on his way home from his wife's funeral. Three months later, he was walking in her memory. Another walker wore a pink jacket from 2002 that read: "In honor of my mom. 13 cities. 780 miles." And yet "Foot Soldiers" is far from depressing.

Many participants come to the Walks as part of a team. Some dress up in wacky costumes like contestants on "Let's Make Deal." They have Opening and Closing Ceremonies, sort of mini-Olympics productions with people giving speeches, with music, a "survivor's circle" and a flag processional. They sleep in tents, thousands of walkers, on sleeping bags, with a big tent dining hall. During the Walk, comfort stations, theme-decorated Pit Stops or Grab & Go Stations, line the route, and driving crews "sweep up" walkers who can't make the whole 20 miles each day on foot. Other drivers ride along in vans with loud speakers playing Roy Orbison's "Pretty Woman" and other up-tempo songs to encourage the walkers. It sounds like great fun, summer camp for adults, the kind of place where you probably make friends quickly and for life. Douglas says, "For many participants, hugging is as integral to the 3-Day as walking. So is being nice, helpful, and emotionally open."

As I read I found myself wanting to join, wondering if I could possibly walk twenty miles in one day, let alone 60 in three, or 600 in a few short weeks as Deborah Douglas did. I went online and found a web site, www.the3day.org, that explains the Walks in detail. They have links to other sites with important information about breast cancer awareness. One excellent site is www.komen.org with particularly interesting and educational interactive features. You can also visit Deborah Douglas's site, www.the3-daybook.com, to learn more about her and "Foot Soldiers." It is a book to read and then to share.

after reading "dr. susan love's breast book" i was well versed in the technical aspects of my disease. "foot soldiers" spoke directly to my soul. i read dr. love's book in 2 days; i savored "foot soldiers" and extended the reading of it over several weeks. i re-read many parts and my copy's spine is now broken, so many pages are dog-eared that i might as well highlight every word in this book.

this book shows the reality of living with breast cancer through the eyes of the patients, survivors, their families and friends. it is an invaluable resource and a great source of comfort, humor and inspiration. the writing is impecable and the weaving of the stories into one is very well done. i've been buying books from amazon for years and never before felt compelled to write a review.

Three Cheers to Benn & Evans...we've all been waiting for an all encompassing guide like this.

Glaciers and Glaciation by Douglas Benn and David Evans is an excellent review of the current theory and underlying principles of glacier science. It is copiously illustrated with black and white photographs, line drawings, diagrams, charts, and graphs. The writing is technical, but the ideas involved are clearly and methodically presented. The organizational structure of the book is comprehensive and logical, helping the reader comprehend and absorb fundamental concepts.

The book is designed for those with a serious interest in science. It would be appropriate, for example, for college students who have had an introductory course in geology and know that they wish to continue studying one of the earth sciences. It is also appropriate for professionals like myself, who are not geologists, but who have a strong interest in the earth sciences and wish to learn more about glaciers and glaciation.

The book may be accessible for people without a science background if they are willing to absorb the high rate of new vocabulary and concepts that the text presents. The first chapter on glacier systems and those in the second half of the book dealing with glacial landforms may be particularly satisfying in this regard. Even the more difficult chapters, like those on glacier motion, may be absorbing if people can visualize how the glacier slides, changes shape, and pours like a thick syrup over obstructions.

I found the book to be fascinating. It took me 71 hours over a period of several months to read the entire 640 pages of text and study the many diagrams and other illustrations the book has to offer. By applying what I have learned from Benn and Evans, I have been able to interpret certain sand and gravel deposits in my area as probable subaqueous outwash fans deposited by the retreat of the last ice sheet here in Maine. This interpretation needs to be verified by others more qualified than myself, but I could not have hoped to come up with an hypothesis of this nature without the knowledge gained in reading this text.

The book has abundant references, as it is in many ways a review of the current literature and thinking on the subject. It does not deal with the current debate about climate change, nor does it deal primarily with glacial history. Instead, it excels in its main purpose as a clear and quite technical discussion of the current principles and theory of glacier science as understood by glaciologists today.

As Goodyear's liason to the Zeppelin Company, Harold G. Dick had unprecedented access to the ships, the information, and the people who defined this "golden age." He speaks with authtority because he was there. He can relate unique statistics on the performance of the Hindenberg in trans-Atlantic flight because he flew as a officer/observer. He speaks about the personalities of Dr. Hugo Eckner, the chairman of Zeppelin, and his son Knut, because he enjoyed the friendship of both. He also touches upon the rise of the Nazi Party, since he was a direct witness to propoganda flights (and some more harrowing events). (His photographs of the damage sustained by the Hindenberg as it attempted to lift off on such a flight are unique; Nazi officials confiscated all others, but he managed to hide his film.) His access was unique, and so therefore is this book.

This book is a first-hand account by Harold G. Dick who was the only American ever to be allowed into the Zeppelin-Luftschiffbau operations. His experiences between 1934-1938 and his extensive notes of that time provide the reader with a fantastic understanding of the complexities and excitement associated with these graceful giants of the sky....Wish I had been alive at that time to see them!!!

One of the best.

One of the best airship books written as the author was directly involved in all aspects of the zeppelin program. No book written so far exceeds this one in illuminating the operations and organization of the passenger airship effort. Pictures never before seen are included. The story is told in context with the political situation of the time. A must read book.

Harold Dick wrote an enticing account of his time with the great airships. He had complete access to the entire program. They even let him assume flight control resposibilities. The right man was in the right place at the right time.

A-HA! Performance provides a very clear method for understanding what makes your employees tick and how to manage the process so that you end up with a win-win situation. This book is great for new managers and a wake-up call for those of us managing for many years who thought we already knew how to manage. I will keep this book behind me at work to refer to regularly and to help remind me what type of manager I want to be. Good stuff!

Before reading A-HA! Performance, we focused on motivating the workforce based on what the company thought employees should be motivated by. Now that we understand how to find their Intrinsic Motivation Points, it gives us tremendous insight about what Really motivates each individual. We have magnetized employees to the company's goals.
