This collection of short stories is absolutely wonderful. It includes Sci/Fi stories about Hell, Trolls, and the absolute worst wish ever imagined. I've read this book a number of times and it never fails to make me burst into laughter.

Somewhere about two thirds of the way through this book I put it down & said to myself "these people are crazy!" Then I picked it up again and said "But Gosh, I wish I could have been there". A good chunk of the book is background to clipper ships in general & specifically the history of the "last American Clipper" but there is also the riveting account of a group of "crazies" who find the remains of SNOWSQUALL abandoned and rotting at a dock in the South Atlantic and do their best to save at least part of her for a maritime museum back in the States. That they succeed (at least in part) frankly left me a little teary-eyed. Those of you who aren't at least a little bit "odd" when it comes to Tall Ships may say "why bother?" My guess is that after reading this book you may begin to understand. For those of us who already have the disease, you will be rooting for the authors and their friends the whole way. Nicely written, nicely illustrated, a real "keeper".

a marvelous ending to a marvelous series.

This series really touched me. I found myself relating with so many of the storylines. I felt that he did a great job, writing and resarching this book. It did get kind of hard at the end, like it does with all series at the end because there are SO many different people to catch up with. I felt like, he did a great job tying up all the loose ends and.... well I did cry many times, there were just so many things that really touched me. I am really glad that I read this series and will continue to reccommend it to others.

More of a primer on critical thinking than simply a textbook on social problems, Dorn, Anderson and Baker have created a eminently useful and rewarding collection of excercises and articles in this newest edition of their popular text.

While this book was never used in any classes I took, I did take an undergraduate critical thinking class in the Sociology department at CSU Sacramento at the same time that Dean Dorn was teaching there. I think he integrated some of what Andy Hiken, who taught that class, used; the structured and extensive frameworks for critical thinking excercises and other bits and pieces of the curriculum. I have read this text and others that use a similar model and find that the Dorn/Baker/Anderson book is useful, rewarding and especially interesting for use in an undergraduate environment.

A MUST have Book

I must admit to being a bit biased as I am a friend of Chuck Dean, but this is only because I am also a researcher in the same subject. That being said, there is also a bit of rivalry as I was also hoping to publish the first book on this subject. Unfortunately for me, Chuck beat me to it.... fortunately for every one else he did.

There can be no man more qualified to write this book, he has spent years conducting his research and this book contains about as much information as there is to be had on this subject. Believe me, the information is not readily available and this book is as good as it gets.

It is superb, not only for it's technical details, but also for the personal stories of some of those involved.
There is also a chapter on the use of sled dogs by the SS during WWII. This is a very difficult subject to broach and it is a credit to Chuck that he managed to track down and get a former SS dog driver to tell his story... not everyone was proud to serve in the SS.

This is a must have book and will be one that people will read time and time again. When you get bored of that, there are many excellent photos and diagrams to look at. I can't recommend this book highly enough

Top-notch Howells

A spoiled son (James Langbrith) is opposed to his widowed mother marrying again because he feels it will dishonor the image he has of his father: he thinks his father was a great man, but actually he was a monster. The truth isn't revealed to James until near the end, and he handles it well. He wants to tell everyone the truth about his father but is counselled against it. Howells should not have killed off Dr. Anther, who was about to marry James's mother: it makes things too easy for James. But the story is interesting and develops smartly in Howells's hands.

Wonderful poems , Touching Translation

Cundaramurthy Nayanar was the pioneer of what is called " Vancap Pugazchi" genre of poetry in Tamil Nadu. Vanca Pugazchi was praising by mocking and was directed at Lord Shiva, his chosen divinity. The poems by their boldness and direct description of what are seemingly Siva's negatives bring us closer to the God with a touch of wit. There are two important dimensions in adopting this genre, that of the poet's intimacy brought by Bhakti that makes the God's power harmless, and of the God's humanness that makes him accesible.

What is admirable is David Dean's great rendering of these poems in Englsih. Being a Tamil myself I am very impressed by this Professor of the Hebraic University in Jerusalem. His fluidity and grace make this volume a delight to read and a treasure to cherish. Surely Tambiran Thozhar Cundarar must be happy that his cynical wit mixed with child-like devotion could be reflected so wonderfully !!

Collages for pondering

Stockwell's art is as eclectic as his acting career. I am not a professional artist or art critic, but his collages really make me think. He has a unique perspective to find links in ordinary items to inspire one to look deeper into the details, finding hidden meanings. My personal favorite is Wet Dreams, but Eclipse of the Sun, Pandora's Box, and Dream House are also favorites. As with all true art, the photos in the book do not do justice to his true work. I highly recommend visiting a live show if you can get to a gallery with his works. For those of us who cannot afford to purchase an original, this book allows us to view some of his work. Great actor - better artist.
