I just finished listening to this book, and all I can say is God bless John Dean! Yes, he was part-and-parcel of the whole Evil Empire that Nixon tried to construct, but he has turned his back on his wicked, wicked ways, and come clean about his part in elevating the monstrosity that is our current Chief Justice.

Rehnquist is an evil, racist, homophobic whack-job who shouldn't be allowed in public without restraints... much less allowed to wear that goofy robe with the stripes, and pass judgement about matters beyond his ken. This informative book shines the light of TRUTH on this insane man's history, and explains in detail how he LIED to get a lifetime job on our nation's highest Court, where he has endeavored to undermine the Constitution and YOUR civil rights for over 30 years.

Rafkin's reading is incomparable... his Nixon voice is flawless... just the right touches of evil and paranoia.

If you love your country, and want to know more about the right-wing nutjobs who are trying to misappropriate it, READ or LISTEN to this book!

Reporter Alec O'Brian didn't believe Christine McKinley's life was in danger -- until his story about her led to another life-threatening "accident." It looked as if someone really wanted to hurt her. There was nothing for a hero to do except find out why.

Alec's plan involved rules:
1. They needed to escape to a secluded hideout.
2. Alec needed to learn everything about Christine.
3. Heated, passionate lovemaking was highly recommended.
4. Under no circumstances was Christine to fall in love with him.

Too late, Alec realized he'd fallen in love. Once he finished rescuing Christine, would she have any more use for a hero?

"Rescuing Christine" is an entertaining, very humorous tale of two opposites attracting. Alec is charming but lazy, while Christine is highly motivated but doesn't know how to have fun. Their close proximity develops a relationship between them, and the final balance in their relationship is sweet and believable.

In addition, I appreciated that, while Alec hadn't really had any serious relationships, he also didn't seem to have a commitment phobia. I grow tired of men with commitment phobias in romances, and appreciated that, once Alec had gotten to know Christine, he realized that they were really good together.

This book is a well-written, smoothly-developed book with appealing characters and a great deal of wit. Read and enjoy!

Think and Grow Rich (temporally & spiritually)...for Mormons
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-01-20
Although Christensen's "The Right to Riches" is, ostensibly, intended for the LDS audience ("This is a book written by a Mormon for a Mormon readership"), the principles and anectodes proffered are still accessible to the non-LDS reader (the context of the lesson may be lost on some, but the point of said lesson should still resonate). It is obvious that Christensen has achieved a level of personal, temporal, & spiritual success that is both impressive & inspiring. He seems to embrace a black-and-white perspective regarding success and failure --- if you want to pursue success and be successful, you either do or don't and are or aren't --- there is no try (is Yoda to thank for that characterization?). Nevertheless, Christensen advocates, among other things, uncompromising devotion to God, dreaming big, self-discipline, dogged determination, goal-setting, and -- above all -- belief in oneself. In sum, the book certainly contains an LDS bent, albeit the principles proffered, as well as the warm tone (in particular, the "note to my children"), give the book an inspiring and hopeful tone. Christensen has obviously achieved success and this book provides a general blueprint for emulating that success (while feeling good about it).

Dean's work is an historical geography of a coffee growing region in São Paulo state. Issues of land ownership, including squatters' rights, the granting of sesmarias, and land speculation are of interest in this text. Dean also examines the frontier's allure in that social distinctions seem to disappear on the frontier. The reason Dean gives for the lack of social distinctions and privileges is that land ownership determines one's social status.

Scholarly Perspective on a Failed Social Movement
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2003-11-11
Sometimes, we need the perspective of history to understand the extremes of the cycles of mass human behavior. As health care became ever more expensive in the 1970s and 1980s in the United States, a consortium of academicians, insurance executives, and government beaurocrats developed the concept of "managed care", a method of rationing health care to reduce costs. Employers, patients, hospitals, and doctors "embraced" what was termed "the new paradigm" for the delivery of health care. Visions of "wonderful health care for all, for less than we now pay for it" were described by politicians and promoters. Smith would call it a "mass delusion", another version of tulipomania or market bubble. Unfortunately, the unravelling of the failed movement has been a costly disaster, and now, several years after the publication of this work, we are still picking up the pieces. Red ink rules the day, in hospital systems, academic medical institutions, and in the doctor groups formed to chase the promised riches of managed care. The financial headlines report the latest revelations of the scandals of the once-touted health care corporate executives.
This scholarly work will enlighten the interested reader about the mechanisms and folly of the now-failed era of managed health care.
