This is one of the three novels that Chesnutt wrote late in his career that were rejected by the publishers. The publishers apparently found THE QUARRY too controversial and in deed it is. The basic story line has been done before - the Puddin Head Wilson theme that John Twain wrote of where a man is raised as black but is indeed white. Chesnutt varies the theme and while telling the story of Donald Glover also tells the story of hypocricy in American life. For those who did not like Chesnutt's early stories that relied heavily on dialect and folk tales, I would urge them to try his later works. I recently read THE COLONEL'S DREAM which is an excellent study of the New South. The Quarry is an excellent view of America in the early part of the 20th Century and perhaps today.

Guilty yet Innocent of killing in cold blood
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2000-10-16
"I raised my shot gun at the silhouette, closed my eyes and bang, bang, bang I fired... The smell of gunpowder hung in the air and Allan Hall was dead on the ground a few metres away from me." (Excerpt from Raging Waters) Raging Waters is a truly inspiring novel that deals with the tragic life of an innocent killer, Dean Waters. The novel explores the relationships between Dean Waters, his brothers and his insidious father. It stirs emotions and challenges the very essence of guilt and innocence. The novel is told with a frankness and openness that instantly earns the empathy of the readers. The story tells of the horrors of the Waters's family life and the physical and mental abuse that was suffered at the hands of Ces Waters by the Waters's children and how the constant abuse and brainwashing led Dean Waters to kill on behalf of his father. The story explores Dean Waters's life, both before and after the tragic killing and leads up to the climax of the novel where his innocence or guilt is left up to a jury to decide. From the disgusting childhood environments to the adrenalin pumped boxing matches, Raging Waters deals with the courage and strength of the Waters's children, who were able to break the endless cycle of abuse. The autobiography of Dean Waters is in no way egotistical, instead it is an honest account that gives hope and strength to anyone who has suffered abuse or is suffering abuse. The novel also reveals and creates awareness of the horrors and burdens that some unfortunate people carry.

This practical manual, first published in 1990 has been revised and is now in its fourth edition. It includes a comprehensive section on diseases. Also included is an excellent section on duck raising. Poultry products are probably the most universally accepted animal protein sources. Small flocks can be initiated most easily, providing meat and egg protein.

Other books in Christian Veterinary Mission's Raising Healthy Animals series includes Raising Healthy Horses, Raising Healthy Cattle, Raising Healthy Pigs, Raising Healthy Goats, Raising Healthy Rabbits, Raising Healthy Honey Bees, Raising Healthy Sheep as well as Drugs and Their Usage, Zoonoses (Amimal Diseases That Affect Humans) and Christian Veterinary Mission's most popular title Where There is No Animal Doctor.

It's been four years since Raven fled the Baron's estate: she's moved from a bonded servant to an outlaw mage haunted by her past and driven to know why her mother seemingly abandoned her. Her return to the Baron's estate for answers will lead to an impossible set of choices in RAVEN, a stunning story of a quest for truth which will change all the lives it touches. Young adult collections will find it an impressively compelling read.

Imagine an audience that is really listening. Without compromising musical sophistication, you engage listeners of every age and experience level so that they enthusiastically embrace- and even perform or create- complex musical masterworks. Their applause and excitement rivals the crowds at major athletic events. They leave the performance gratified and have a new understanding and appreciation of music; you know you have reached them successfully.

This is no fantasy. Major conservatories and performers have developed entirely new ways to connect with and captivate audiences.

David Wallace has been teaching these techniques at The Juilliard School and to orchestras and conservatories around the world. For the first time, "Reaching Out" gives you access to the ground-breaking principles that will revolutionize your approach to audience engagement and interactive performance.

ENDORSEMENTS:

"Reaching Out will make a tremendous contribution to the growth in quality of arts education programs."
-Polly Kahn, Vice President American Symphony Orchestra League

"A must-read for any musician who wants to extend his or her audience beyond the traditional concert hall."
-Rebecca Charnow, Director of Educational Outreach at the Manhattan
School of Music

"The principles of Reaching Out have revolutionized my children's concerts."
-William Prinzing Briggs; Conductor and Music Director, Central
Kentucky Youth Orchestras

"David Wallace has made a major contribution to the field of orchestra education with this book."
-Jessica Balboni, Director, Educational Initiatives,
Los Angeles Philharmonic Association

"One of those rare, lovely occasions when the right ideas, the right messenger, and the right timing all come together to make a real impact on the future of classical music."
-Eric Booth, faculty, the Juilliard School; columnist, Chamber
Music America

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Whether playing classical viola with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center or Texas-style fiddle in his band "The Doc Wallace Trio," David Wallace is at home in front of an audience. He has been reaching out to new audiences since he first toured elementary schools with his junior high school orchestra. Now a faculty member at The Juilliard School and a Senior Teaching Artist at the New York Philharmonic, Wallace also has performed for the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the New York Philharmonic, the Taos Chamber Music Festival, the Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival, Young Audiences Inc., and countless new music festivals, chamber music series, hospitals, schools, churches, libraries, community centers, retirement homes, and Texas-style fiddle contests.

New series of papers...
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2001-11-28
This book presents many new essays from several ancient scholars. The papers are well-written and on diverse topics. Although the hardcover is expensive, it is well worth the price, since quality commentaries and new scholarship seems scarce. The article on the Demiurge by Jan Opsomer is top notch and well worth the price of the book. M. R. Wright's paper is excellent as well. Look out Cornford, there's some new kids on the block. Included in the back of the book is a comprehensive list of commentaries and translations of the Timaeus, which is extremely useful.
