Excellent biography of an important forgotten figure

Harry B. Smith was perhaps the most prolific lyricist and scriptwriter in the early American musical theatre. This biography of him is fun to read and exhaustive in its research. It is part of a series of books on these early neglected figures, all of which do not have footnotes. As a scholar, I thought I would find that frustrating, but the author very clearly indicates his sources in the text, and this procedure suffices perfectly adequately for most purposes. To learn about the man behind early operetta hits, from "Gypsy Love Song" (from The Fortune Teller) to "Yours Is My Heart Alone" (from an adaptation of Lehar's The Land of Smiles), is a great pleasure. Smith also wrote the scripts for many early musical comedies, such as Irving Berlin's Watch Your Step.

In "Harry Vernon At Prep," Franc Smith weaves a mad little story that attacks the "sanctity" of academe in general and the teaching profession in particular. This is one of the prototypes for the type of novel that pretty much defined the satirical writing of the 1950's and 1960's. Novels of this type became formulaic by 1968, but when Smith wrote this baby, the ideas presented and the cockeyed worldview included were fresh. The really interesting thing about this novel is its iconoclastic attack on "beat" culture--skewering popular culture almost wasn't done at that point.
I used to devour books of this category by the double handful, but "Harry Vernon" was always a particular favorite of mine (check my image above to see how worn my copy is).
I'd love this book to be reprinted again, I want a new copy. What I'd really like is for this novel to get a bit more attention than it has.

This 40 day retreat was a breath of fresh air to me. I used it for morning devotions and I'm still (three months later) trying to absorb all of JKD's insights. She writes with a passion for God and her spiritual thoughts are well worth your time to study. I am hooked. I'm in the process of reading all of her books.

This book is must reading for health care executives wishing to learn how and when to use legal advice to solve problems. It demystifies the critical intersection of management, the law, and ethics. It's also an excellent text for graduate students learning health care administration or law students wishing to specialize in health care law.
The author, Dean M. Harris, is one of the nation's leading experts on legal and ethical issues in the business of health care. This highly accessible book conveys this valuable expertise.

The author, Dr. Gary Morsch is a friend of mine from college and gave me a copy of this book at a reunion...I didn't read it until taking a trip to China. I was totally moved by it. I wouldn't recommend reading it in a public place as it is a very emotionally challenging book.
Dr. Morsch has been all over the world on ground-breaking humanitarian missions but don't think the point of the book is to take huge trips like his; it's about finding your own personal mission, whether that's across the street, across town, or across the world.
I've given this book to several people. It's that good.

A must-read for anyone who wants to go into teaching or become a principal and make a difference in the lives of children. This book talks about a principal's struggle in a tough neighbourhood, how she got through to many of her students, involved a community in their education, and transformed a school with the worst reputation into a leading school. Her tactics are so simple that we don't often think about employing them. If you are an optimist, and not willing to give up on what may seem like a hopefless situation, then you will be cheering alongside Sandra as she fights for her students.

The Henhouse: A Ture Story Of Life On A Maine Farm is based on a personal childhood adventure of author Carol Shorey in a charming, instructive story of a young girl who begs her father to let her help him take care of the chickens. There, young Carol encounters the sights, sounds, and smells of hundreds of roosters and hens -- and is pecked by aggressive roosters until her father comes to the rescue, scooping her up in his arms and carrying her away to safety. Very highly recommended for school and community library collections, this thoroughly entertaining picture book story is wonderfully illustrated in watercolor artwork by Sandra Dunn.

The book is written simply and concepts are easily grasped. As a bonus, each chapter includes a 'Questions from the Field' section, in which FAQs about subjects relating to the chapter are answered. In short, Edson and Dean stick to facts and keep it simple.
Due to large field of subjects covered, do not expect a technical dissertation in each chapter. This may not bode well with some people, however I feel the information contained applies to all skill levels and positions in the museum field.
'Handbook for Museums' is an excellent read; it's great for both classroom study or working reference. Definitely a 'Thumbs Up'!
