Tree Rings, Drought, and Indians in the Southwest
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-08-14
"Environmental Change" is a collection of 13 essays by scholars in honor of Donald Alan Graybill, an archaeologist of the desert, especially in the American southwest. As with most collections of this sort, you may enjoy and learn from some of essays and others you may find inpenetrable and uninteresting.

As a marginal area for agriculture, the climate and weather are the crucial factors for the pre-Colombian Indians of the Southwest. Thus, most of these essays reconstruct climates past through the meticulous examination of tree rings, flood terraces, myths, and celestial events. Agriculture was no small-scale enterprise for some of the Southwestern Indians. The Hohokam of cerca 1000 AD irrigated and farmed 100,000 acres in the area around Phoenix and their population must have numbered several tens of thousands.

Well, this book isn't going to be a best-seller, but I found some of the essays interesting and intriguing. Suprisingly, one of the best is a long treatise on "Sky as Environment: Solar Eclipses and Hohokam Culture." It sounded dull to me, until I got into it. Did the psychological impact of solar eclipses have something to do with the mysterious disappearance of the Hohokam? Other essays take up the spread of maize cultivation, and the environmental challenges of the cultures of the Anasazi, the Mimbres Valley, and the Rio Grande Pueblos.

There are lots of charts and graphs depicting the good times of adequate rainfall and the bad times, drought, in the Southwest back to about 500 AD. This book is scholarly, dense, and sometimes incomprehensible, but worth reading if you are interested -- really interested -- in the Indians of the Southwestern United States and the influence of climate on culture and society. None of the recent periods of drought, by the way, holds a candle to what has happened before.

College-level readers of architecture or environmental design will find this a fine history which uses themes and a chronological arrangement from the 18th century to modern times to survey the history of environmental design. While The Environmental Imagination: Technics and Poetics of the Architectural Environment could have also been featured in our Arts section, it's reviewed here for its wider applications to any college-level holding strong on poetics and environment: essays consider qualitative dimensions of the environment and both old and new technologies of mechanical services, building design choices, and diversity.

Dr. Dean Black shares a delightful little essay on why we keep getting ourselves into the big messes we seem to find ourselves in--and why our efforts at change just make our challenges worse and worse.

Dean Black reveals the hidden secret to making life work...a secret we all knew by heart when we were children...

...but our becoming "grown-ups" has hidden from us!

This book will let you within the veil of why only those who become child-like will be able to enter the kingdom of heaven...as well as being the ONLY WAY we can get ourselves out of the messes our "grown-up" mindset keeps getting us into deeper and deeper!

Thanks, Dr, Dean Black!

This is a beautifully illustrated book that tells of the special relationship between a boy and his dog, "Boo," while reflecting the author's obvious love of nature. Dean Bennett is a well known, highly regarded Maine environmentalist, who has written and illustrated a number of impressive works on Maine and New England's natural heritage. This children's book, his first, shows clearly that what lies at the heart of his environmentalism is love of the wonders of the natural world.

C. D. Darlington looks at history from the perspective of biology and human behavior. Instead of simply declaring that thus-and-such happened, followed by such-and-thus, Darlington tells us why things happened. He describes the engines which have driven both historical individuals and civilizations to do as they have done. It's all there, from soup to nuts, in this comprehensive treatise on human civilization . . . and not in the least boring, I might add.

Evolution of the Brain and Cognition in Hominids by Dean Falk is a small published version of a lecture from 1992. It can be broken down into three parts, which are the main points that are debated about. In other words: What facilitated the initial take-off in brain size? What behaviors were targeted by natural selection? And the last part deals with neurological reorganization and its cognitive correlates. At just over twenty pages it holds a ton of information and thoughts to enjoy.

The best executives have superior precognition
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.

The classic book about the landmark 10 year research project conducted at Newark College of Engineering by Professor John Mihalasky and Douglas Dean that demonstrated that the executives whose companies increase profits the most, score far higher than average on precognition tests.
Prof. Mihalasky gained great insight into the things that enhance... and the things that inhibit... intuition.
This book is a detailed account of this very solid research. Highly recommended if you are interested in ESP.

NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW:
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 1995-12-11
"A triumph of craftsmanship. Style and content are in complete harmony. The characters are vividly real; their functions, as symbols in the author's larger perceptions, is unforced and organic.... The controlled point is one of the technical joys of the book.... AN EXILE is an intensely Southern book, but like the best of Southern fiction is not self-consciously so. The basic human problem cuts across geography."
