The truth is hard to hear, but necessary

Carolyn Dean, MD, ND is a powerful and clear writer who exposes the deep corruption in our medical and food industries with passion and conviction. She backs up her outrageous claims with deeply researched citations from the standard medical literature and government databases. She shows that despite medical error being underreported by a factor of 20, it is STILL the number ONE cause of death in America (and almost surely Canada). Hospital error, hospital-acquired infection, adverse drug reactions, nursing homes all come in for their share of the total death toll. Why this atrocity is allowed to continue unabated and unnoticed is a question we all have responsibility for. [...]

One of the finest novels "out" of the New South

Review Date: 2001-02-04
I first came across Joey Manley's novel in an interview from Genre magazine flying from Los Angeles to Birmingham, Alabama. A year later I met him there at a book signing (or was it a bar?) We became fast friends. Even discovered I grew up in town this novel is based upon. Strange time, the early 90's. He helped me over a nasty break-up - I later helped him move to Kentucky, where he'd planned to begin his next novel. Over the next several years I would read and re-read "The Death of Donna-May Dean" and try unsuccessfuly to reach his last known number.

A few days ago, I found myself laughing in the kitchen - skimming pages...taken by the characters of Jamie, Keller and Thomas and the revelation of Donna-May Dean. This was a new copy I'd found by special order from a local bookshop; when it arrived they said it was officially out-of-print. I'd since given the two copies Joey gave me to friends over the years. This one will stay with me, and get read and re-read. Glad to find you here at Amazon.com. Thanks Stonewall Editions. It looks like I'll still have to wait for his next novel... but I'll wait!

A Whale of a Tale--Murder Most Foul
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2001-03-26
Barbara Nadine and Tondelayo wanted nothing more out of life than a chance to continue advancing in their Navy careers. One white, one Cherokee and black , they had survived a poverty childhood together; they had survived the difficulties minorities and `so-called white trash' folks endured in the service to become second class Petty Officers. Everything was copasetic until Barbara Nadine was found dead in a locked duty room on Treasure Island. Locked from the inside. Tondelayo was convinced that her best friend was murdered, but all she had to go on was mother-wit and grit. Along the way, she inadvertently stirred up something sinister, which involved chilling revelations about the forces determined to eliminate her. Scary. Solving the puzzle took her around the Bay Area to the hills of Marin County and to the underground corridors of Oak Knoll hospital, and the surprise ending couldn't have been imagined by anybody but the author.

"James Theodore Holly (1829-1911) was a contemporary of Douglass and Delany, an advocate of black emigration, the first Afro-American bishop consecrated by the Episcopal Church, the founder of the Orthodox Apostolic Church in Haiti, and the first black man to preach in Westminister Abbey. This first book-length biograpy tells the story of a faithful shuchman and a pioneer black nationalist."

Romance with some bite

As someone who 1) doesn't read romance and 2) doesn't read vampire books, I must admit that Scarlett Dean got me to do both, and enthusiastically. Destiny's Call is a quick, fast-moving book that combines the best of both romance and vampires without getting bogged down in excruciating grisly detail or romantic interludes that run on for five pages at a time. This book has an unusual approach to the whole vampire culture and brings the genre tidily and happily into the scientific 21st century. Let this one grab you by the throat.

New Product Development For the World Market
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2002-11-01
An extrememly helpful picture of new product development at the time of the growing globalization of world markets. Many U.S companies were afraid to embrace this new concpt--particuarly in new product development International had always been treated as a separate department--something isolated in a sense from the domestic operation. Today most forward U.S. companies are completely global in their outlook all the way from the way they are orgnaized down to the way they devlope products for world markets. At the time this study was done, the U.S. was behind other countries in recognizing globaliztion and in many ways this had an adverse effect on our abilty to compete globally. This book gives me an in depth picture of this point in time for new product development.

recognition of one of mystery greats
Helpful Votes: 22 out of 23 total.
Review Date: 2003-08-03
Almost fifty years ago, highly successful jockey Dick Francis left horse racing to write mystery novels that in many cases used his former occupation as a milieu. Over the next four plus decades, genre fans continually loved his works that have led to multiple awards including a life achievement and grandmaster status. When his companion, his beloved wife Mary died a few years ago, Mr. Francis finally slowed down his incredible high quality annual production of great who-done-its.

THE DICK FRANCIS COMPANION provides further recognition of one of mystery greats as well as giving readers a deep look at his works since the 1950s, his memorable characters, an exclusive and interesting interview with Mr. Francis, and of course links to horse racing. Though clearly for fans of the author, this biography with its emphasis on the novels and a recent anthology is a Triple Crown winner (so the finish line is stretched across the ocean as Mr. Francis raced in England) for those readers who know a sure bet.
