This is the story of Sherman, a young sheep who feels himself getting too old to hang around with the young lambs, and is looking for something more. Having grown up in the Good Shepherd's flock, he has now made friends with sheep from other flocks, and their tales of the fun that they have found on Pleasure Mountain make him dream of making the journey himself. And so, in spite of his father's warnings, he sets off to find out just what is at the top of that mountain. But, it is a journey that will take him through misadventures he has never dreamed of, and into dangers beyond his greatest fears. Will the Good Shepherd help him? Can he?
Christian literature has a wonderful tradition of allegorical stories, the most famous of which is John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress (unless you include C.S. Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia). Following in that great tradition is Dean Davis's Dangerous Journey of Sherman the Sheep. This book is written for tweens, nine- to twelve-year-olds, who are stretching their wings, and looking with wide eyes on a non-Christian/post-Christian world with many dangers and temptations.
Overall, I found this to be a charming book with a great lesson. But, don't get the idea that this book is baby stuff. The book uses allegory, but makes clear the dangers that a young person faces in the world. Overall, I think that this is a great book, one that should be given to all Christian parents with tweens, or youngsters approaching those tween years.

Dangerous Tunes -- gripping from the start

This book was great. Dean Crum wastes no time putting the lead character, Rodney Junk-a hardened blues banjo player and narrator, right in the middle of a dangerous mystery. Crum sets a quick pace and never lets up.
The book also gives a great perspective of a musician's love for his profession, while keeping you in the middle of a great mystery.
I could not put this book down (ask my wife who kept asking me to turn the light off). If there is a sequel, I'll be the first to by it. The lead character was likable, crusty, vulnerable, and wise all at the same time.
If you like music and mystery, this book is a must read.

As the first book in the series, it sets a good pattern of stories for Danny, Steve, and Steve's sister Cat. I hope to see more like this. Danny faces evil monsters called Golgoths inside his computer game. It's perfect for kids who enjoy action and adventure stories. I really liked it. Danny even gains the ability to see in binary numbers, just like his computer, and see bright color patterns. That stuff got my attention! If you like a good mix of a fantastic tall tale and computers, you will enjoy this book. "Danny" is a grrrreat good book for kids to read.

A Good Departure from the Koontz Supernatural

Put the ingredients together for a great book. The hero & heroine, each with their own deep seated inner turmoils. 2 very psychotic villains & the hero's dog which is afraid of his shadow.
Putting this all together & adding Mr. Koontz's masterful writing style & command of the English language & you have a very difficult novel to put down.
The story is a thriller & not a supernatural piece. The novel is very plausible, if not believable. The characters all tie together very well. Rocky, the nervous & jittery dog, provides some tongue in cheek humorous spots.
I've had the book for quite sometime before I got around to reading it. Sorry it took me so long. It's a very enjoyable novel

I must say I particularly liked the government conspiracy/abuse of authority theme & information about the Forfeiture laws. The villainous lovers, Roy & Eve were absolutely perfect & maybe my favorite villains created by Koontz. Eve Jammer on her rubber sheets doing her thing was particularly delightful. However, the development of characters overall seemed to lack & I would have liked Koontz to go more into some of the characters (The Lee's for example). The romantic coupling of the main characters seemed weak, lame, thrown together, & unrealistic. The whole circumstances of Valerie's reaction to Spencer following/stalking seemed very unrealistic. I just can't see a woman falling for this guy who basically was stalking her after meeting her once.
What REALLY drove me mad though, was the never ending car chase - it goes on for almost 30 pages! I thought it would never end! Did the editor not notice or am I the only person??? Then the part about using "GODZILLA" or govt. defense weapons from Star wars program was just too over the top IMO. I thought the ending was lame, however I liked how things ended for Roy & Eve.
I hate to give Koontz 3 stars & if this would have been a 300-400 page bk. I might rate it higher, however this bk. dragged & in the case, I think less mighta been more.
My advice: Don't let this be your 1st Koontz bk. unless you are into govt. conspiracy themes.

I am a mother of two, and my children are eight and ten. They both really enjoyed the book. I ordered this book ..., and my children read it for their star program and their school. I haven't got to read it yet, but both of my children were very excited about how easy it was for them to understand the story. Also they are both really crazy about dragons and they both loved that the book was illustrated.

I am Amy's cousin and she gave me this book as a Christmas gift. I read it and loved it! She talks about the 52 things that nature teaches us, featuring beautiful photographs from the American Museum of Natural History. Some of the 52 things are: acceptance, love, joy, relationships, trust and wisdom. This book is a keeper and anyone looking for a relaxing book, I suggest this one! Thanks Amy!
