a warm regional mysteryReview Date: 2001-08-08
Ray changes Jonahýs death from accident to homicide and begins an investigation into the manýs background. He quickly learns that Jonah has had a previous alias and had a belief that he was a reincarnation of the Prophet with Nineveh being DC. Because Jonah moved here not that long ago with his flock, the Children of the Lamb of God, Ray enlists Dan to help on the investigation in case religious questions surface. This case alone is difficult enough, but the duo also has to contend with a DEA agent who is busting half the county for growing weed.
CRIMSON CREEK is a warm regional mystery that focuses on life in Appalachia Kentucky. The story line stars a warm protagonist who has fallen from grace and is exiled to Three Mountain Township where he regains some of his lost esteem. The who-done-it is entertaining, but the tale belongs to the various characters living in this hilly county as they make the constable and the minister seem like real people involved in a murder mystery.

A charming book with a great lessonReview Date: 2005-10-02
Christian literature has a wonderful tradition of allegorical stories, the most famous of which is John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress (unless you include C.S. Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia). Following in that great tradition is Dean Davis's Dangerous Journey of Sherman the Sheep. This book is written for tweens, nine- to twelve-year-olds, who are stretching their wings, and looking with wide eyes on a non-Christian/post-Christian world with many dangers and temptations.
Overall, I found this to be a charming book with a great lesson. But, don't get the idea that this book is baby stuff. The book uses allegory, but makes clear the dangers that a young person faces in the world. Overall, I think that this is a great book, one that should be given to all Christian parents with tweens, or youngsters approaching those tween years.

Dangerous Tunes -- gripping from the startReview Date: 2001-04-28
The book also gives a great perspective of a musician's love for his profession, while keeping you in the middle of a great mystery.
I could not put this book down (ask my wife who kept asking me to turn the light off). If there is a sequel, I'll be the first to by it. The lead character was likable, crusty, vulnerable, and wise all at the same time.
If you like music and mystery, this book is a must read.

Those interested in the study of Plains Indian culture will enjoy Peggy Albright's well-written text and the way she incorporates the photos into her brief biography of Throssel. While those interested in the art of photography can simply skip to the section containing the photos and read the comments by people she interviewed while working on the book. Some, for example, are descendents who helped identify and give background on people in the photographs.
This is not your typical collection of portraits of dour "chiefs." Included here are portraits of many different people- some better known than others-including women and children. There are also photographs of ceremonies that were actually being performed illegally at the time, as well as posed compositions lke "The Three Scouts," riding amongst the markers at The Little Bighorn Battlefield.
My only regret is that I purchased this book in paperback. I certainly hope it will withstand all the many times I, and others will leaf through it.
