Second Chances is a must read for us Americans and now even more so after the attack on NY. It is almost like Dean had an intuition about "Second Chances". The bomb, the plot, the groups involved and the unpredictable ending with a twist, it is gripping. The book is not only about hunting down the perpetrators, it brings out the value of our our existence, our belief in GOD and why we are here, it gives us a SECOND CHANCE. At a time like this (Sept 11/2001) the darkest days in American history, I strongly feel that "Second Chances" even though it was written way before the attack on NY, the Author had an inclination of some sort that this is what America needs.
I salute Dean D'Adamo for sharing his book with the rest of the world. It is truly a book that in its message, we need to understand.

It's all about perspective

I bought this book and sadly didn't read it for many months. I wish I had read a review like this and perhaps, would not have wasted time. Once I began, I breathed it in and hated having to put it down.

Dr. Ahmed writes about what he knows, as an astronomer about science and as a Muslim believer in one God, about his faith's tenets and history. All he requires from the reader is an open mind. Because of those two characteristics, he can and does explain Islam's perspective on science and religion. They are not at odds in a Muslim's worldview and have never been - he goes over the fascinating history of the Middle Ages, also, in which no tension existed between the Islamic faith and scientific achievement.

Very enjoyable to read, it's a fascinating journey into astronomical observations and stargazing history, and along the way you glean some important insights into how Muslim achievement has also shaped Western history. Without reading books such as these, from a Muslim scientist's perspective, you can not attain an understanding of the modern and empirical approaches to science that Islam's holy book, the Qur'an, established as a foundation of Muslim scientists' inductive research. A case in point is Ibn al-Haytham (Alhazen in Latin), a Muslim optician/physicist who pioneered the scientific method in the 11th century; a new book by Bradley Steffens (available on Amazon) corroborates that Ibn al Haytham is one of the top 10 scientific geniuses in history! Now all we have to ask is why we are not taught about them?

One of the best religious and scientific books I have read!

This book is one of the best books I have ever read that explains science in terms of religion... This book exlpains how the religion of Islam has in its Holy Book the Quarn explained sciences that scientists have just recently discovered. This book shows how the 2000 year old Holy Book of Islam explains concepts of science, and politics, and many other important subjects. I definitly recommend this book to Muslims and Non-Muslims alike. For Muslims it will teach them how the Quran explains scientific phenomenons. For Non-Muslims it will show how the Quran indeed explains scientific concepts only recently discovered today. And will help give a better and more correct view of the religion of Islam.

Aaron Dean Hall's The Sorceress Of Atunluck is the fantastic story of Zeffa, a young woman who must hone her inner strengths, gifts, and magics to defend her homeland against a ruthless race of dark elves. Magic, danger, monstrous obstacles, and the crucial importance of self-improvement in the face of peril, make for a gripping work of deftly written high fantasy. The Sorceress Of Atunluck highly recommended reading and marks Aaron Dean Hall as an author of considerable storytelling ability.

The Sorceress of Atunluck is fantastic. The author's use of a young nubile girl growing up in a terrifying world only to find the only salvation for her people will come from inside herself is amazing. If you want a good read, grab this one. The characters are so well-developed and the creation of the author's Tolkien-esque creatures really draw you in. With this book, you'll be terrified, amazed, overjoyed and finally just in awe. The Sorceress of Atunluck is a good read at any age, combining science and fantasy is a mouth-watering spectacle that leaves you hungry for more. My only question? When's the sequel coming out?

It just keeps getting better! In this follow-up of Mrs. Dean's first novel you are taken on a journey with a wonderful family that just cannot seem to keep out of trouble. Once again we visit this same family from another aspect and watch how they are drawn into a stranger's mystery.

This book first draws you to the wonderfully illustrated cover which immediately draws your attention and helps to give your imagination a ride when you are face to face in the tunnel with the impetuous character, Olivia. The naïve nature and the tenderness that exudes from Olivia makes you sympathize and agonize with her as you follow her adventure. This book reads with every human emotion. You become immobilized with fear, fall head over heels in love with the handsome lawyer, and your intuition guides you through the many phases of discovery as you begin to unravel a tightly wound puzzle that never seems to end. Is there a killer? Does Olivia just need a well deserved break from her 12-hour shifts? Ellen Jensen-Dean's third novel again takes us on a roller coaster ride of extreme highs and extreme lows, but always placing us back where we started, wanting more!

I can't wait for Ellen Jensen-Dean's next book!

True to form Ellen Jensen-Dean continues her quality style and efficient use of words.
The artist's book cover invites us to ask, "Who is that ominous figure at the end of the tunnel?"
On page one; we are plunged right into the event through which the plot unfolds. Livy's character soon captivates us with her sleuthing to find the answer to her nagging intuition. Ellen does a superb job of bringing the Hansen family from "An Unlikely Witness" into the mystery. Although this book can stand on its own, I enjoyed the chance to revisit these former friends. The author conveys her values of love of God, love of family and self-respect through the characters. I look forward to her next book.

We are home schooling a 7 year old who had a tough time getting started on reading last year. He's progressing very well now, though, so I've been looking for books that are a bit more advanced, closer to third grade level than what he's been reading. This book turned out to be perfect on that score.

The vocabulary is simple enough that my son could read most of it without help, but it introduced several words that he needed some coaching on. As a result, it served both as a way to increase his confidence in his own ability to read and as a way to teach him a few new words. Also, any book about Superman is bound to be of interest to a 7 year old boy, so he really wanted to read it.

The artwork in the book reminds me of the early-mid '90s animated TV series. The plot, while not entirely consistent with most of the other "Superman coming into his powers" stories, was not so different as to bother any but the most die hard detail-oriented Superman fan. The main difference from other versions of the story is that young (teenage) Clark has no idea that he has any super powers at all, and suddenly comes into most of them all at once.

Anytime I can pick up a book about Superman and have a positive message about adoption in it, I will read it to my kids. I have used Superman as an example to my two kids who are adopted. I would like to see more of this type of writing. I have also used the book to increase my child's reading ability. It is easier to learn when there is a common bond. ===> rgkohlman@fuse.net

Journal of Vascular Surgery Review
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2001-03-01
Aortic surgery, territory that until recently was only explored by surgical specialists, has rapidly evolved into an area traversed by multiple competing specialties. To stay the course and steer clear of danger, Gewertz and Schwartz have edited a timely monograph on the subject that functions as a review of where we've been, as well as a perspective on where we've going. These editors have enlisted an outstanding group of authors to guide interested readers through up﷓to﷓date information on aortic surgery, while maintaining appropriate balance in the vital area of reconstructive vascular surgery.

Section editors selected coauthors from their own institutions so that consistent thought prevails throughout the sections of the book. Developmental anomalies of the aorta and basic principles of aortic surgery nicely complement more clinically oriented chapters that fully cover the current practice of aortic and visceral artery surgery. Two sections in particular (thoracoabdominal and pararenal aortic aneurysms and renovascular disease) are extremely well written. They provide depth that the trainee will find in few other texts and that will enlighten even the most experienced vascular surgeon. Photographic images are sharp, and artwork is well done. A series of color plates is provided at the beginning of the text to enhance corresponding black-and-white images in some of the chapters.

Thanks to diligent editing, the volume maintains uniformity of style and content despite representation from six major university medical centers. Even the reference lists are relatively current, which is a feat in itself. This monograph will appeal to all clinicians interested in aortic surgery. It is affordably priced, full of technical pearls, and well-written. I am delighted to have been given the opportunity to comment on a book that really meets its mark.

Treatment of the aorta and its branch vessels is one of the major areas of interest for vascular surgeons. As stated in the foreword of Surgery of the Aorta and Its Branches, the last decade has seen tremendous advances in this field, including improvements in operative results for thoracoabdominal and visceral reconstruction, detection and management of perioperative complications, and the development of endovascular interventional techniques. In the preface, Dr Gewertz states that the purpose of this text is to address the "full range of aortic surgery" and provide "up-to-date data, along with those personal insights that enhance judgment in difficult situations." He and his coeditors have succeeded admirably.

The text is thoughtfully organized into 9 sections, including "Developmental Anomalies of the Aorta," "Basic Principles of Aortic Surgery," "Infrarenal Aortic Aneurysms," "Thoracoabdominal and Pararenal Aneurysms," "Aortoiliac Occlusive Disease," "Renovascular Disease," "Mesenteric Disease," "Aortic Graft Infection," and "Endovascular Surgery." The chapters in these sections are almost without exception excellent, and there is little redundancy in the material covered. Historical perspective is provided in many areas, along with accurate and readable descriptions of current concepts in the pathophysiology of the disease processes discussed. There are also several excellent chapters that provide a critical discussion of imaging modalities in aortic disease, anesthetic options, preoperative evaluation, and management of postoperative complications.

However, the chapters on operative technique were of greatest interest in this text. These are full of personal insights and preferences that can only come from surgeons with extensive experience. Many of these insights are rarely mentioned in texts or articles, and they have clear practical value. The usefulness of these chapters is uniform throughout the text, and while it may be unfair to single out specific sections, I found the chapters on developmental anomalies, thoracoabdominal and infrarenal techniques, and renovascular disease to be especially useful. Indeed, the detail present in the section on renovascular disease is rarely presented in such a concise and easy-to-read format.

The section on endovascular techniques may not be as extensive as one might wish, although the depth of coverage is probably appropriate for a technique still in rapid evolution. There are short but unbiased comparisons of the results using different endografts, a readable and useful discussion of preoperative imaging and planning for endografting, and an honest discussion of the problems associated with the development of this field. The text is nicely bound and clearly illustrated. It is a bit cumbersome to have all the color photographs placed in the front of the book, but this is a small criticism. On balance, the thoroughness, objectivity, and clarity of each chapter far outweigh any shortcomings. In summary, this is one of the best reference books on this subject that I have read. It is a "must buy" for the practicing vascular surgeon and surgical fellow.

Hargreaves and Fink take a deep look at school leadership. Charismatic leaders are not the answer. Building trust, focusing on learning, and developing distributed leadership at the site level are the elements presented which last. I was particularly pleased to see the issue of succession planning for leaders addressed.

Sustainable Leadership

Andy Hargreaves and Dean Fink are two highly credible authors and researchers of school leadership. "Sustainable Leadership" is an inspirational book that will add to their credibility among the school leaders who want practical and informed discussion about the day-to-day issues affecting schools.

The concept of sustainable leadership in schools is topical because of the loss of the baby-boomer generation holding formal leadership positions and the failure to grow new leaders.

The authors have proposed seven principles for sustainable leadership:
1. Depth
2. Length
3. Breadth
4. Justice
5. Diversity
6. Resourcefulness
7. Sustainability in Action.

The principles were adapted from the research into ethical, sustainable companies. The structure of sustainable leadership provides a great vehicle to discuss contemporary educational change and leadership.

As I read the book my pen was working over-time, marking points of agreement and fantastic quotes. This book is a great read in its own right, but it contains some of the best professional learning that school leaders could have.
