An unusual approach to help solve the mystery of James Dean

Review Date: 2004-07-13
Richard and Debbie Senate's book offer a a new, fresh approach to help illuminate one of showbiz's big questions: "Just who was James Dean?" He really wasn't with us all that long, passing away at the tender age of only 24.

It seems that the more time goes on, the more questions there are about this talented misunderstood genius and cultural icon. Certainly the passing of time has not dulled the star of one of Hollywood's brightest illuminaries who died tragically in 1955 on a lonely road in the middle of nowhere.

The Senates' approach in the mystery of Dean comes from a metaphysical query which even includes a ghostly encounter and question and answer session with James Dean by Debbie Senate. There are plenty of hints in the book that might give suggestible answers from the "Great Beyond" -- and the reader can conclude for his or herself which are or maybe not relevant.
Whatever, this book is quite different from I have read out there on Dean.

Debbie Senate obviously is a very talented psychic, as she states in the book that she has never read any books about the hours preceeding the death of Dean--but certainly from what has been written in this book, she expounds on many details that have been recorded in other works, but with a different twist. It is almost like she was actually there many years ago.

The book is a "must have" for any person interested in James Dean. The dirt from the crash site is an interesting touch, and the reader is given instructions on how to conduct their own "psychic investigation" using psychometry into the James Dean mystique.

As an undergraduate, I studied political science; as a graduate student, I studied history (among other things) - however, few if any of my classes ever dealt with the actual mechanics of business, despite dealing with business in a more general sense (as it would fit in the context of history and politics). I decided that it was important to learn some of the basic concepts of business administration, and the Portable MBA series by John Wiley & Sons publishers fit the bill.

This book on psychology for leaders is not a typical rah-rah work of motivation - there are many such books available for both personal motivation as well as motivational strategy manuals (I believe that Zig Ziglar was one of the first such authors I read in that regard; Tony Robbins is perhaps one of the better known motivational speakers around today). While this book will give some insight into how such motivational work succeeds, this book concentrates on giving an understanding of the underlying psychological forces that motivate people in a much deeper way. Conflict management is also high on the list of topics here, for little can sap the motivational energies of people than can unhealthy conflict; on the other hand, healthy competition can often promote motivation.

Beyond the theory, however, this book gives practical suggestions for applying the ideas that come from psychological understanding. It is all well and good to say that trust is important or that listening is crucial, but how do these get presented in a practical way? 'Knowing an idea does not mean that the idea automatically gets translated into action; believing that you should be empathetic does not mean that you are empathetic. This book was written to help leaders build on, extend, and refine their ideas and to encourage discussion and application'.

Unlike many volumes in the Portable MBA series, this one is primarily the work of two authors, rather than an editor or two with a number of contributors. The authors, Dean Tjosvold and Mary Tjosvold, have both academic and professional experience, and do a good job at explaining things in terms that the non-professional can understanding. Anyone with a basic undergraduate background should find this volume accessible, and indeed motivational in many parts.

This book is a good one for the new manager, the manager-to-be (or manager-wanna-be), or the established and experienced leader looking for new insight and ideas.

Finally, the book I needed

This book is the one I would most highly recommend to people who are looking to address the many issues found in their business environment. The Tjosvolds have developed a work here which is rich in usable material, is written clearly, and does not trivialize the imporance of the issues they address. This is NOT the usual cookie cutter business book; it is a serious work which is practical and can be put to use immediately in any sized company. I also personally found it motivational and inspiration to my efforts as a change leader.

Jodi Dean was my professor so I have had the pleasure of becoming very familiar with her work. She (as well as her book,) is eloquent, opionanted, informed, and to sum it all up a genius. Although some disagree with her views everyone cannot help but respect her. She is one of the greatest political scientists of our time. If you read one work on this subject let it be Jodi Dean's.

Important--and fun!

This is an original exploration of politics and technology today.
Some readers might disagree with Dean that the public doesn't exist. But all will love her discussions of the "priceless" and "1984" ads, movies, conspiracy theory, Bill Gates, etc. Also, her thorough and clear explanations of the work of Slavoj Zizek make the book really useful.

Dean was an unbelievable coach who was able to participate in an incredibly competitive arena, yet make consistent decisions with his values and beliefs, never compromising those ideals, even in the heat of battle. The way he created the Carolina family, always remembering everybody who ever played, managed and worked with the team is truly amazing. Keep this book by your bedside and refer to it often.

Dean is surprisingly quotable

I like this new book about Dean Smith a lot. Smith was famous in his press conferences for rambling on and on and not saying much of anything quotable, but the author (David Scott) has painstakingly culled Smith down to a point where the excellent coach sounds funnier, blunter and more insightful than he is often given credit for. This book would be a superb addition to a Carolina fan's library, and Lord knows there are a few of them out there.

Overall, I thought the book was WONDERFUL. I especially loved the concept of the MOPIES (and no Mo'Pies). I couldn't agree more with Mr. Anders' concept that the MOPIES are analogous to those who brought down the Roman Empire. Each night, when I watch the news, and each morning, when I read the newspaper, I am revolted by the exploits of our "leaders." McCarthyism was nothing compared to what is going on in today's politics! It amazes me that there are still people out there who think Bush, et. al. are doing a terrific job. They're doing a terrific job, alright, just not dealing with issues in a positive manner or working toward those national aims upon which our country was founded.

Mr. Anders' father summarized my reactions well in his foreward. The book should be required reading for everyone and serve as a wake-up call for those who are still enamored of the Bush administration.

Being ever-hopeful, I hope this nation follows at least some of what Mr. Anders recommends as a path to recovery.

Insightful, passionate portrait of America's crossroads

Review Date: 2006-07-04
As a psychologist who has worked--using pragmatic and spiritual insight--with many of the top management executives in America, established a Montessori school, undertaken much observation of the American political/social landscape, pursued self searching spiritually and written of it, Ted Anders brings a strong and insightful voice to the present state of America's divided landscape. Using a very provocative metaphor of rape, Dr. Anders quickly establishes the decline of American's sense of empowerment, societal awareness, self-determination, self-growth and intrinsic happiness. Then, he demonstrates how political machinations and forces over the past 60 years have led to a herd-like docility in Americans that led to a gradual but very successful shift in America. A shift radically away from the values and philosophies of the founding fathers, and as well, far removed from the political/social concerns of the early presidents, including the first Republican presidents. Anders describes these in terms of scenes, and crafts a tight historical surveyal of American history being shaped beyond the military/industrial complex fought by President Dwight Eisenhower.

The second part of the book talks of personal philosophical approaches and practical solutions that can effectively counter America's social/cultural/filial decline. As a family man he brings personal observation, pain and passion into this discussion, making a very good case for a return to family values that are not conservative Christian, but wise, omni-spiritual and psychological guidance. As an internationalist, he reaches into global relations that impact us on a daily basis, and asks that we rethink the assumptions accrued upon us through biased media or opinion pundits.

HILARIOUS STRIP THAT HITS CLOSE TO HOME
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2005-09-10
I love comic strips...good comic strips and so I was delighted when I had a chance to read Greg Dean's "Real Life" collected edition of his online strip. This book collects the entire first year of the strip starting in November of 1999. Dean's strip revolves around the exploits of his main characters Greg (himself) and his two close friends Dave & Crystal. Call it kind of like a Drabble for today's twenty-somethings. Greg & Dave are a couple computer nerds whose life revolves around playing games like Final Fantasy, Ultima Online, Quake, Diablo and also playing computer-aided Dungeons & Dragons in true, Uber-nerd style. It fits all the clichés of geeky behavior and it's also damn funny. And I would be lying to myself if I didn't admit that some of the strips about Dungeons & Dragons didn't hit dangerously close to home.

Throughout the daily black & white strips and color strip on Sundays, the trio, when their not engaged in the above activities, have an assortment of adventures such as going camping...where Dave goes through withdraw symptoms due to being away from his laptop. There's also a hilarious romp back in time to France with a time machine built from old hard drive parts. Greg suffers through "transmission errors" due to his time pod being built out of Maxtor drives. Now that's a pretty deep in-joke but if you're familiar with Maxtor it's just about right on the button. There's a number of other hilarious diversion in the book such as Greg's ridiculous lemon of a Volvo, dealing with tech support, and his quest to find an original NES game system.

Since these cartoons are five years old now, a lot of the subject matter, especially as related to technology is outdated. But that's where the real fun of the strip comes in. You not only get a year full of strips, but much like a DVD, you get the creator's commentary. Greg Dean provides commentary on each and every strip of the Real Life, sharing his thoughts on the creative process, anecdotes about the real life incidents the strips were based upon, as well as taking some humorous jabs at himself for his writing or drawing style, particularly in the very early strips. This commentary helps you look at the book in a whole new light. Bear's self-deprecating comments are a scream...especially when you know darn well he could be talking about you! Dean used Adobe Illustrator to make his strip and the result is a simplistic, yet very clean cartooning style that makes good use of his character's expressions.

Real Life is a quality comic strip and very funny. It's subject matter may have a somewhat limited appeal, at least in these early days but it's extremely well done.

El Dr Ornish, además de mostrar un amplio conocimiento sobre la enfermedad cardiaca y como curarla, motiva a la decisión del cambio en el estilo de vida en forma clara y comprensible para logos en la materia. Su prosa resulta amena y sencilla.

The best book on relationships

Dean Sherman's Relationship-book (formerly titled "Love, sex and relationship") is an excellent book.

Without any doubt this is the book that helped me the most in my early twenties when I was wrestling to find out what godly and good relationships look like. Reading this book helped me see that the main thing for ALL of us is to have our relationship with God in order! When I'm whole and fulfilled in God, then, and only then(!), am I ready to enter into a relationship with another person.

Far too many relationships and marriages for Christians (and non-Christians!) consist of two lonely people trying to suck out a sense of purpose and love from the other person. Shermans points out that we were always meant to get our true sense of purpose and love from God, not our spouse or any other human being.

There is no way that any spouse (how wonderful he or she may be) can fulfill your deepest desires. There is a God-shaped hole in all of us, and only God can fill that. A beautiful relationship comes when two whole persons (in God!) come together and form a strong union with God as a natural center.

The book is brilliant, and it's obvious that it helps a lot that Sherman didn't meet his wife when he was 16 or so. He met her when he was 28, and it adds a lot of strength to the book that Sherman knows firsthand how it is to be single and to feel desperate for a spouse.

Five thumbs up for this beautiful book that I keep buying and giving away to people!

Dean has tackled one of the most difficult, and often times most misunderstood, areas Christians face- How to handle relationships and sex as a Christian. His biblical insight and application on this subject helps shed much needed light on these topics. The book is for every Christian, and for many non-Christians as well. It is very down to Earth in its approach, and very solid in its message. It isn't the "typical" message your parents or pastors may have taught you. A MUST READ for any single- young or old- considering dating and relationships.

Absolute masterpiece to follow-up of her first book En Dukke! Extremely memorable characters, wonderful setting, everyday hum drum life turned upside down. How better to explain this wonderful romance, drama, mystery novel written by Ellen Jensen-Dean. I was amazed at the character development and the intrigue that was brought through in the book. The main character, Catherine, is such a strong willed woman character that allows nothing to penetrate her "I can handle it myself" attitude that you are thoroughly surprised when love enters and takes over. The plot is masterfully done and attention to detail is the main reason you can relate and actually feel like you are there with Catherine as her life is turned upside down again and again. You are immediately smack dab in the middle of a suspenseful romantic comedy that is never want for anything whether it be the love interest Mike, her brother Mitch and his budding romance with Allison, Elsie the abused housewife and her father Carl, Nat the close knit and wonderful friend, or the suspenseful drama that unfolds as the mystery surrounding the sale of the quaint Minnesota family farm becomes unraveled. Look for many twists and turns as you try to keep up and find out who dun it and realize later that you were wrong! Great characters and a great plot that just keeps you going with a book that is hard to put down once you've started, so make the time and become engrossed in the wonderful small town environment with a big city mystery.
