Bill Dean has spent his professional career both at Universities, Washington State and Michigan State, and the private sector. He has spent years growing and doing research on several different types of spuds. He is well traveled and knows intimately both the scientific, and practical side of growing the potato.

If you need information on growing the potato I'd most certainly buy this book.

p.s. Dad told me all proceeds from his book go toward buying the family cabin in the woods, so your money goes toward a worthy cause.

Great School, Great Book

I attended the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine longer ago than I care to recall, but I am personally familiar with many of the doctors and incidents depicted in this well-researched and interestingly written book. It contains more facts per page than anything I have ever read (with the possible exception of the Yellow Pages), but that's the way it should be in a history that documents the key years of an institution that changed from a small medical outpost on the prairie to--as the authors brand Oklahoma taxpayers' expectations--a "Harvard on the plains" medical complex. While the school perhaps never achieved that level of academic excellence, it certainly rose far higher than the Oklahoma state legislature and it's turf-protecting politicians had any right to expect, given their meager level of support both financial and political. Politics aside, the 50's and 60's were great times to be living in Oklahoma City, and this book brings back many of my fondest memories--and reminds me of the many brilliant and industrious men and women I met and worked with at the Medical Center. The book captures it all beautifully, and I highly recommend it for anybody interested in the subject.

A "Must Read" for Med Students, Educators, History Buffs

I found the book to be extremely interesting, and even humorous at times. The book offers a play by play event listing of the establishment of the medical school and tells a candid story of the founders and individuals that were ultimately responsible for what kind of medical facilities, Oklahoma has today. A "must-read" for Medical Students, Educators and generally any History Buff that would enjoy the "inside" story behind the Oklahoma Medical Center. The photographs are a plus.

The domination of the media by large "mega"corporations has a far reaching impact on our "free" society. This book lucidly explains how this has come about, how it affects the nation, and what we might do as citizens to deal with this problem. This book is invaluable at shedding light on a problem that has been ignored (I wonder why) by most other major media outlets. It takes on the big guys and should be required reading for anyone who cares about the free exchange of ideas in a democratic society!!!

This book was mentioned on a recent public TV special which investigated "free" speech. As a high school student with aspirations of entering the world of mass communications, I may now consider reading this book, in hopes of understanding manipulation of the public by the media.

I personally met Donna Dean while I was going through a very difficult time in my life. We crossed paths while shopping in Wal-mart in Okeechobee, FL. and she saw how much depair I was in...I had made a terrible mistake by moving down there to be with a man that I had met on-line. I was 18,000 miles away from home and felt alone and helpless. Donna and I became fast friends and she encouraged me to trust in the Lord and she took me into her home when things got to the point where I sank into a deep depression. Before I left for my long journey back up North, Donna had given me a signed copy of this wonderful book and I have recommended it to my other friends! She truly is my "Guardian Angel". Keep doing God's work girlfriend! P.S. I can't wait to read the next one!

This book is an excellent devotional. I enjoyed the ease of reading style and the inspirational messages that run throughout. I could many times envision myself and my life situations on the pages. I felt warm and uplifted after reading this. I also enjoyed the humorous experiences that are woven into many of the devotions. It is thought provoking and leaves you dwelling on the scripture provide with each section.

From the start of this novel to the very last page, I couldn't put this book down. I've read all of Andrea Dean Von Scoyoc's books and this one is definitely my favorite. The characters are so realistic, I could see them in my mind as though I was watching them. I kept thining this book would make an awesome movie. It's a brilliant story, eerie, haunting, and rather gruesome, yet it's romantic in a way that only this author could deliver. A fantastic read for any fan of gothic horror.

The Mistress of the Macabre strikes again!

The Mistress of the Macabre scores yet another hit with "Michael"! From the first few pages the reader's thrown into a ride that they better hang on to for dear life because it's one wild rollercoaster!

One of the things I love most about Andrea's writing is her ability to take the reader from reading about the most brutal and vicious acts ever to enter the mind, and then, in the blink of an eye into the type of love story seldom heard of in this day and age.

If I were to find any fault it would be that the ride ended all to quickly for me, but I'm selfish and say that about all Andrea's works.

Whether you personally like Howard Dean or not is beside the point: he has moved the Democratic Party light years into the future. If you're a Democrat, you should understand that history in order to honor it. If you're a Republican, you should understand that history in order to surpass it. And if you're a Nader supporter, have I got a bone to pick with you . . .

This is an excellent book, and will be interesting to anyone who cares about political organizing and democratic power. It is a very unusual political memoir, written by people who participated at all levels of the campaign, each of whom speaks from his or her own point of view. The authors offer frank, searching assessments of the campaign's many successes and failures. They also tell wonderfully compelling stories drawn from both the heights and depths of the movement.

Affectionate biography by an old friend

If you really want to know Mr. Clemens, don't stop with the modern biographies. Read this one by his long-time good friend and consultant. Howells wrote this book in 1910, the year Clemens died. It is a fond recollection of the 44 years he had known the author. Clemens was a complicated man and Howells admits that he did not always understand him. But Howells, a great writer himself, comes close to describing the multi-faceted person that Clemens was. Yes, he was Mark Twain, but that was just one part of a man who surely must be one of the most interesting Americans who ever stood in the spotlight of the world. He was a superstar before radio, TV, and movies. This is certainly not an unbiased account of his life. Howells was clearly in awe of Clemens, a man who was unlike himself in so many ways. He was fascinated by Clemens and drawn to him. How lucky we are that we have this insightful and personal biography, beautifully written by someone who obviously wanted to get it right. Howells put Clemens at the top of the list: "Emerson, Longfellow, Lowell, Holmes - I knew them all and all the rest of our sages, poets, seers, critics, humorists; they were like one another and like other literary men; but Clemens was sole, incomparable, the Lincoln of our literature."

I love this book. I am a teacher and have read it to and with children from 2nd to 6th grade. They get very excited about finding Silas and the history really comes alive for them. The illustrations are beautiful. The children were inspired to make their own drawings of Silas, and now we have quite a collection.

This is a great Junior detective story: the puzzle is not only who stole the cat, but how could they have done it.
There is a satisfying streak of logic in how the Find-Outers go about this mystery that appealed to my six-year-old daughter, and some fun distractions along the way.
Higly recommended.

The second book to the series

Review Date: 2004-08-31
This is the second book to the five findouter series written by Enid Blyton. As I have mentioned in my review to the first book (i.e: The Mystery of the Burnt Cottage), this series of books is probably Enid Blyton's best work, being very entertaining, having great plots, and definitely superior in quality when compared with the more flashily titled "Famous Five" and "Secret Seven". Recommended to readers of all ages... (I'm aged 21)

This book talks about the dissapearance and reappearance of an expensive cat. How does the cat dissapear? and what does it have to do with wet paint? Once again the children get together to solve the puzzle, leading to the apprehension of the criminal, and revelation of a great plot. And i'm thinking "Damn, not bad for only kids". The books creates a few laughs as the children successfully hamper Mr. Goon's progress in various ways (to his agony, and our entertainment).

A word to readers however, Dissapearing Cat is rather mundane compared to the remaining books in the series. However I highly recommend one read it before progressing to Book 3: The Mystery of the Secret Room, which is essentially where the fun begins in full throttle, and onwards to the other stories....

These books are for all...from age 8 to till your really really very old. ENJOY!

Persisting with severe limitations

This brief autobiography is augmented by biographical material from his family to provide the context for his story. When I learned of the recent medical findings I was shocked that he could accomplish as much as he did. His is not an ordinarly struggle, but he persisted through many difficulties with optimism for the future. The cover design, by his six year old niece, captures the spirit of the book.

This brief biography and autobiography tells the poignant story of a poor Javanese baby adopted in 1966 into a Mennonite family doing social service from the US midwest. In his own words, and from those close to him, we learn how an unexpected disability and years of surgery lead to a stunning diagnosis whose implication humbles us all. Underneath the narrative are important lessons on cultural exchange, intention, and tenacity.
