Great overview of the Pacific Rim

Review Date: 2007-09-25
The Global Studies series is a great way to get a general overview about a region of the world and its quick history. Each country is divided up into a quick overview of demographics, trade, economics, population and other pertinent data similar to a scaled down CIA world fact book. There is then a general overview of each country and how it has played its part in the region with a particular focus on World War II to the present. Finally there are about 24 articles in this one that focus on all sorts of different aspects from the region. They address everything from gambling opportunities in Macau to population control in Japan. Overall this book does an excellent job of capturing the Pacific Rim and the countries that reside there. It is a great start to learning about the region and provides an overview that will give you a focus to direct further investigations. If you are just getting started on this area of the world as I am you will find it an invaluable resource.

Great Study of God and His People in the OT

This book was written by a Catholic priest and Hebrew Bible scholar back in the 1960s, but it stills sounds relevant today. Dominique Barthelmy discusses God's up and down relationship with His "image," ie, His covenant people. It seems that the more the people turned from God, the more that God tried to reach out to them through prophetic figures.

The book is a good reminder of how mankind has always tended to go its own way rather than God's way. It also reminds us that God has not given up on us and that He still desires to bring His people back to Him. A good read!

don't remember when I had read about the book God and His Image: An Outline of Biblical Theology by Dominique Barthelemy, but I am glad I added it to my Wish List and got around to ordering it. Fr. Dominique Barthelemy O.P. was an internationally recognized expert on Old Testament studies and a member of the Pontifical Biblical Commission who died in 2002.

The book is exactly as it advertises an overview of Bibical Theology and thus salvation history. Fr. Barthelemy asks very interesting questions throughout and then writes to answer them as to what can be known from the scriptural evidence. What I like is that he doesn't overstep what can be known just to advance some theory. He also has the ability to write deeply on scripture while at the same time not becoming too technical and overwhelming the reader. I certainly don't claim to be any kind of expert, but I found at no time in the book did I get lost in the points he was making.

I think just the chapter he wrote "The idols and His Image" to be worth the price of the book by itself. When he writes that when man tries to build bridges to God he creates idols and when God builds a bridge to man it was the Incarnation. His insights make you look at what you might already know and to see it fresh and more deeply. Viewing Biblical theology in this outline view helps you to see the big picture of salvation history that is mainly concentrated within the Old Testament but sees its fulfillment in new Testament.

I do hope that more of his work is translated into English if this book is any indication and since this book was published by Ignatius Press I hope they bring more of his work to us if possible.

Reveals the grit, glory, and pain that made California.

Review Date: 1997-11-20
Growing up in California you are taught that the future is always gold . "Gold Rush: A Literary Exploration," edited by Michael Kowalewski, pulls back the curtains on perhaps the most important event in the Golden State's history to reveal a place filled with dreams, nightmares, courage and cowardness. A place that became America's future.

Published by Heyday Books and the California Council for the Humanities, "Gold Rush" is 500 pages of short selections (1-8 pages) that lend insight to the California and American character. Writing includes: poems from Robert Frost, Gary Snyder and Wendy Rose; journal entries from William T. Sherman and John Muir; and essays from Thoureau, Dame Shirley, and Emerson.

On the eave of California's 150 anniversary of the discovery of gold (January 24, 1848), this book is a great read for anyone curious about how California shaped America.

150 years later, we in California are still struggling to understand the legacies of the Gold Rush. How much of California's present "character" can be traced to the tumultous 1850s? GOLD RUSH: A LITERARY EXPLORATION attempts to answer this question from two directions: first, by examining the diaries, letters, and journals of the 49ers who actually participated in the rush, and second, though the generations of later writers who have re-interpreted the Gold Rush again and again. The book's many short selections and splendid illustrations provide many access points; though sometimes old, the accounts are never dull. At turns humorous, chilling, and thought-provoking, GOLD RUSH is a compelling read for any Californian interested in the state's roots.

As with ALL of the Disney Bunnies books, this has gorgeously illustrated pages. Unlike many children's books (many which are overly stylized or simple to look at it) this is a lush, beautiful world that Thumper lives in and a joy to look at for parents. It's a simple story of a bunny who cannot sleep as he watches all of his friends and family fall into slumber, and finally succumbs to sleep himself. The book is of a very sturdy, thick quality and has a glossy sheen. Very nicely done and the simple and sweet story that encourages bedtime is a nice book to have on hand before bedtime. My 3 1/2 and 2 year old girls both love this one.

This musical is really fun for everyone. My father once played the Potentate at a church production and my mother is hoping to direct it again. However, we need to find the book and music, first! If anyone knows where it can be obtained, we'd be delighted to make the purchase. I checked the online catalog of Brentwood-Benson and could find no mention of it.

My church performed this back when I was a kid. Our family hung on to the tape for years! We still have it. It's a story for old and young alike, and the music is quality that sticks in your head and heart forever. Some of the songs are meditative, others upbeat. I would say only one other musical has meant so much to me in my spiritual walk, and that is The Story of Little Tree. If you can get your hands on The Great Late Potentate, it is worth keeping and passing around. Brentwood-Benson Music ([...]) sells the archived performance CD and a listening CD for [...] and [...] respectively.

I *LOVE* this cookbook! I have (and love) the earlier edition, but this is completely different, and incredibly wonderful. Like many community cookbooks, it contains families' most treasured recipes -- but they're very clearly written, most describe why they're such favorites, and they're all contributed by writers, many of whom you'll know and love. Truly, one of my all-time favorites!

Absolutely brilliant!

I must confess that since the advent of the Internet, I have not found it necessary to buy many cookbooks (sorry, authors), because the recipe for just about anything can be found on the virtual Web, but this book caught my eye, went on my Amazon Wish List and was received for Christmas. What an absolute treat! The recipes as such are almost secondary in this book, because the point is that all of them have been contributed by American authors, including such jaw-dropping talents as Pete Dexter and Elmore Leonard. And Jay McInerney and E. Annie Proulx. And many more. Now, as one who likes to cook and has by dint of circumstance done so in Eastern Europe for more than a decade now, I find a distressing reliance in some of these recipes on such things as Campbell's soups. With the possible exception of the most detailed bisques and, perhaps, Bouillabaisse, soup is so easy and wonderful to cook at home that there should be no excuse for this. But I digress. The true joy to this book is the writing which accompanies many of the recipes. Thus, for instance, you would never find this ingredient in the oeuvre of Julia Childs:

1 lb. turkey hearts (Do not attempt to collect individually - very messy and inconvenient to the turkeys)

Or instructions such as this; "Now serve with rice and, on the side, a well-iced can of Pabst Blue Ribbon, one per guest, with extra in the icebox. Without the Pabst is okay, but not true Appalachian".

This is a book which would be appropriate not just for those who spend lots of time in the kitchen, but to anyone who enjoys American literature. There's enough for both kinds of people (and I'll bet lots of Amazon users correspond to both descriptions). I can't recommend this book more highly!

A THINKING PERSON'S BOOK

Warren's book tells a story, packed with suspense, of what happens when a doctor concocts a method to reverse the human aging process. The regimen, requiring only a few days, could change a deathbed, eighty-year-old person to age twenty-five. The treatment would give this youngster an endless, disease-free life. The main character, Mark Langer an elderly retired former World Health Organization director, locates Dr. Susan Bastian who has fostered the scientific breakthrough. Susan gives him the treatment.

Mark suggests that Susan ascribe to his plan, a method that would include humans of all levels and a system regulated by a world wide government. The villains have different ideas, and two other methods of using the anti-aging scheme become a source of conflict. A wealthy industrialist wishes to preempt the doctor's secret and offer the treatment to those able to pay big bucks. Another faction from the criminal element plans to seize the doctor and take the full advantage of the regimen. Warren takes the reader through several creative and gripping twists as he weaves his thriller story into supprise ending.

This novel assumes that almost everyone would opt for new life through the anti-aging procedure. The premise being that, without controls, a serious population buildup would result. This reviewer began to question the assumption at mid point of the book when war over the aging cure broke out. What would I do if offered a chance to regain my youth and secure a boundless life? Is the fear of death at work here? These questions provoked some strong thoughts. I resolved that I would refuse the offered regimen. Death has no sting, considering what Christ tells us and what John says about the hereafter as recorded in Revelation 7:9-17.

I recommend you read this book; it will make you think.

Growing Young by Dean Warren is an adventurous and intriguing science fiction novel about Dr. Mark Langer, an old man who is presented with a cure for aging. Langer undertakes the treatment and reverses his aging body to one the status of a robust and health 25 years. Yet in a world already crushed with overpopulation, how is he to see that this magnificent achievement is not abused for malevolent ends? Growing Young accomplishes what science fiction does best -- provides the reader with a profound and thoughtful saga about how the possibility of immortality could affect human society as a whole.

I'm cross-training into Telecom. I've signed up for some courses at Pace University (NY)and this is the book for Telecom I. I read most of the author's Network + book and found it to be ok. This Telecom book is a great book to read. I find every chapter interesting. If I taught a Telecom I class this would be the book of choice. (I took a Telecom I class around 10 years ago, more data than Telephony) The main focus of this book is telephony then data networking. You should read this book even if you aren't taking a class in Telecom but need an introductory understanding of a lot of telephony technology. Great Read.

A Great Book about Handel's Operas

Review Date: 2000-07-20
The interest in Handel's stage music has risen considerably in the last few decades, and one really needs a book like this for an in-depth reference about the genesis and analysis of his operas. Here one can find a bit about Handel's life as well, but the main focus is on the musico-dramatic structure of his works. I found the author's analysis of Handel's usage of da-capo conventions to create living characters particularly illuminating. The only warning to the potential buyers: this volume talks only about the operas written until 1724, so it does not include analyses of such major works as Alcina, Serse or Ariodante. We still have to wait for the next volume.

This is a remarkable book. I have been an avid Handel fan since before it was fashionable and I can't tell you how many times I have referred to this book. It contains incredible history and facts, as well as insights into the libretto (including plot structure), relationships of arias to other compositions (= Handel's famous "borrowing"), instrumentation, etc. A real wealth of knowledge.
I have been waiting since 1995 for Volume II where Handel's best (and conversely, most pathetic) works would be analyzed. Sadly, I understand that Mr. Dean has since passed away and thus, I doubt that I will ever see the work completed. If any of you out there are musicologists and/or music historians, please consider filling in this disappointing gap!
