A Daughter Remembers Her Father

This is a wonderful book written by a daughter about her father. The father happens to be Jackie Robinson, an important man in baseball and in African-American history. She remains down to Earth and describes the life the family led and how her father affected the family and history. Jackie Robinson was a giant among men and knew what he was doing. It is a credit to Robinson that he was able to make himself above reproach and acceptable to the white public. It had to be very stressful to him and his family to try to be perfect but somehow he was able to make it. A very moving story, simply told by a loving daughter.

Great story about a great man!

I can't say enough good things about this book. I have the soft-cover edition, over-sized - abt 9" x 10", double-spaced, with scads of pictures. Sharon did a wonderful job of writing and selecting the pictures to include. I learned things about her dad that I hadn't known before, and found my love and respect for him as an outstanding ball player and dignified man, a true gentleman, greatly increased. I stand in awe of him. What an example he has set for human beings of any and all races & colors! If I had sons, I'd want them to use Jackie Robinson as their model to follow in this life. His daughter Sharon deserves much credit for writing about his life, his sorrows, trials, & accomplishments in the face of ridicule and worse from ignorant people, for sharing all this with his now-adoring public. He proved that if you do what is right in spite of great opposition and threats, you'll come out ok in the end. I'm sure that his faith had a lot to do with his demeanor and positive attitude towards his trials.

I strongly recommend this book to all who enjoy reading true stories about those who have successfully overcome almost unsurmountable obstacles. Thrilling!

from Susan, an 87-year-old white life-long baseball "nut".

Promises to Keep: How Jackie Robinson Changed America

In this wonderful biography,Sharon Robinson shares her father with us as a daughter who held her father in high regard not only for his achievements in breaking the color barrier in baseball, but also for his hard won victories in politics, busines, civil rights and as a family man. Through love letters to his wife Rachel, photos from the family's archive and Sharon's deft writing hand, readers get to spend time with Jackie Robinson and come to understand how he navigated his way through the treachery of racism to become an integral part of creating another important chapter in the social contract with America.

As the Vice President of Educational Programming for Major League Baseball and an author, Sharon Robinson continues to preserve her father's legacy--well.

Acording to Greg this book contains the first year of Real Life, all of The Forge comics, comentaries on all of the comics in the book, plus a lot of other extras that can not be found on the website. I have been reading Real Life since the Keenspot days, and have always loved it. Well worth it.

I haven't read the book yet and I hope it gets here in time for Christmas, but I have read all the comics on Reallifecomics.com which are essentially the same comics contained in the collection. I started reading real life back when it started (yes, when it was still with keenspot), and it's definitely one of my favorite webcomics...right up there with Penny-Arcade and PvP. I'm certain that the book is fantastic and the comics contained within are not only incredibly humorous, they are also very accessible for readers that aren't into video games and computers. I'd go as far as saying that it's at least as accessible as Dilbert or Foxtrot...your Grandmother could understand these comics and still laugh, they're that good.

Oh, and apparently the first year of The Forge, another comic done by Greg Dean, is also in there. Yet another reason for you to buy the book.

Under the guise of a huge, phone directory size book, this one insinuates that it is a list of famous single songs and maybe some bios collected from library books. WRONG. It's fun! Prof. Dean teaches music, talks about his stars really crossing with 'THE REAL GUYS", his reminising about a youth seeking a place in the entertainment world, plus homey touches including his dog Snarf, his old cars, his family...Just open any page and start having a ball. I did and no-one paid me to say it! Yet!

Excellent lay description of one search for a gay gene
Helpful Votes: 14 out of 15 total.
Review Date: 1997-07-07
I very much enjoyed reading this book and learned a lot from it both about the way in which these particular researchers are going about their work and about genetics in general.

Hamer is the Chief of the Section on Gene Structure and Regulation in the Department of Biochemistry at the National Cancer Institute. This book describes in lay terms the work that led to the publication of the scientific paper entitled "A Linkage Between DNA Markers on the X Chromosome and Male Sexual Orientation". The goal of the study was to determine whether male sexual orientation was "genetically influenced" and what they found was "a statistically significant correlation between the inheritance of genetic markers on chromosomal region Xq28 and sexual orientation in a selected group of homosexual males." The statistical significance was strong: the odds of the correlation happening by chance was only 1 out of 100,000.

Before they started looking at genes, Hamer and his group considered the family histories of the pairs of gay brothers who he used in his study. The researchers found more gay men on the maternal side and eventually realized that this was due to recessive X-linked inheritance. "X-linked traits always are passed to men through the mother's side of the family, which is the pattern we were seeing for homosexuality."

The book carefully explains how the research was done and what conclusions could and could not be drawn from it. They did not find a gay gene; they only showed that one exists. It does not "determine" homosexuality; it is only one factor in the makeup of those gay men who inherited it. There may be other genes that play a role and there are surely many environmental factors that influence the expression of homosexuality. Some of the evidence from Hamer's study "suggests that Xq28 plays some role in about 5 to 30 percent of gay men."

The book closes with a chapter on the social implications of this research. There is also an interesting chapter addressing the question "How could a gay gene survive consistent with the facts of evolution?"

Simplicity is a beautiful book that delves deep into the soul of the author. It is a spectacular thing to be able to describe your soul to the masses and to do it in such a beautiful medium such as poetry. This book tugged at my heart and also inspired me to be more than I am. The simplicity of this book is that it is able to convey meaning in everyday ideas and things and also to convey these to the public at large. I have a deep respect for this author and this work and I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I recommend it for anyone who just wants to be inspired by beautiful poetry. Thanks Dean for creating this masterpiece.

Simplicity is a great book containing many wonderful poems. This book is for anyone to enjoy. You don't have to be a poet or a professional author to enjoy the works of Dean Thomas Andrews. Dean's poetry is unique in that he combines many ingredients such as emotion, life experiences, and the influences of those throughout his childhood and into his adulthood which has made him the man he is today. I would reccomend Simplicity to fans of poety or even those who have had no experience with reading or creating their own poems. The book is filled with a variety of poetry that anyone can enjoy or relate to. To sum it all up, Dean Thomas Andrews exposes his heart and soul to the reader by means of pen and paper. I found many of the poems to be touching and thought provoking. To conclude,I highly recommend Simplicity. Great job Dean!

While I am not usually fond of poetry, 'Simplicity' describes this book well. Now, that is not because it has no meaning - there are plenty of themes and in some non-forceful way advice. It is a short book but well worth a read and a re-read. The author promised more and I will be waiting for it.

Dean's "First Course in Turbulence" was perhaps the first collection of poetry I have ever enjoyed in entirety. I became a devout follower from the moment my brain first sundered his work; and had the recent privilege to hear Dean read from his new collection, "Skid". With an amazing gift for florid language, Dean still manages to talk about life in a manner that makes his content accessible to a copious amount of readers. What marks "Skid" as unique is perhaps its more personally oriented quality, when compared to previous collections. Dean manages to reveal chunks of his persona along with his commentary on the intricacies of life. Simply said, this is a collection that should adorn your bookshelf.

I love Dean Young. I love Dean Young very much. There are many, many contemporary poets I love, but Young's poetry has, I don't know, more OOMPH (is that the correct spelling? I hope you know what I mean). But this OOMPH, this power is not lacking in the poetry of other contemporary poets, it is just more natural with Dean Young. My copy of Skid is worn to a point of obscenity. I feel so guilty that I have turned something so beautiful into a dog-eared mess, but isn't great art here for consumption?

Poetry readers of all levels (and even those readers with more nichey interests) will thoroughly enjoy Young. The poems in Skid are sometimes tragic in their humor that sometimes bordelines on the inappropriate (but in a good way!), and sometimes the poems are quite simple and engulfed by the heart and musings of a true twentieth-century poet.

Read Dean Young, and I am sure this nonsensical review will begin to make sense.

I have taken this off the shelf to read it regularly. Also, though I'm a dire cheapskate who usually reads library copies (of new poetry), I will be buying this. This is a good one to read aloud to whoever's driving the car, to read when one has the flu for a little comfort, to e-mail to people to cheer them up. A good title: "Howl Upone Eskaping, I Learne Mey Vehikle Is Not Sea-Worthie & Upone Mey Tragik Recapture & Longe Internmynt During Whyche I Wrighte These Words Thorough a Secret System Infolfing Mey Owne Blood". An excerpt from that poem: "In the bathroom was a book of poems by (Blank Blank) about how sad and exquisite/and made of goopy lace everything was/ I hated those poems. Even a regular burrito,/no guacamole, was more full of life/than those poems yet each time his school/met mine, they won, walking away...I was just like you until I was alone/then I was a cherry blossom." And in "Whale Watch": Just because a thing can never be finished/doesn't mean it can't be done./The most vibrant forms are emergent forms./In winter, walk across the frozen lake/and listen to it boom and you will know/something of what I mean. It may be necessary to go to Mexico." Reading the entire book, one will see what these brief excerpts don't capture: what nicely accrues after two-four pages of humorous leaps, Zeppo, lobsters and so on, with a human message, always, as the locus.(If you like Caroline Knox, Mary Ruefle (why, she wrote the poem "A Poem by Dean Young"), Tom Andrews, etc., you will enjoy this, I think).

THE BIG STRIKE OUT

Review Date: 2001-09-10
Being a mystery writer with my debut novel in its initial release, I genuinely enjoyed Richard Rosen's STRIKE THREE, YOU'RE DEAD. Having written, early in my career, a series of mystery short stories set against a bush league baseball backrop, I know well the territory Mr. Rosen is exploring. Harvey Blissberg is a star player on the expansion Providence Jewels. He was once a star for the Boston Red Sox. His best friend is murdered, and Harvey finds himself forced to solve the crime. This book won an Edgar in its initial release. FADEAWAY, STURDAY NIGHT DEAD, and WORLD OF HURT followed it. Now a decade later, Mr. Rosen is resurrecting his series in a few months with DEAD BALL. Mr. Rosen's series is a fine one, mixing equal parts of mystery and baseball ( and as Robert Parker once wrote about Troy Soos's excellent baseball mystery series,"Equal parts of baseball and mystery are the perfect combination.") Read this book as soon as you can.

Baseball and Murder...A Winning Combination.....

Center fielder, Harvey Blissberg, wasn't happy about the move. After five good seasons with the Boston Red Sox, they left him unprotected in the expansion draft, and before he knew it, he was on his way to play for the Providence Jewels. But that's baseball, and the season wasn't a total loss. This was his best year, yet. He was really in the groove, hitting above 300, leading the Jewels in batting, doubles and stolen bases, and dating the very beautiful and talented sportscaster, Mickey Slavin. But all that good fortune came crashing down around him when his friend and roommate, relief pitcher, Rudy Furth, was found murdered in the club house whirlpool. What kind of trouble could Rudy have been into that would get his head bashed in with a baseball bat? As the days drag on with the police investigation going nowhere, a frustrated Harvey decides to take matters into his own hands and find the truth..... It's easy to see why Richard Rosen's, Strike Three You're Dead, won the Edgar Award for best first novel. This is a very intelligent and entertaining mystery, full of subtle twists and red herrings, vivid scenes, marvelous, engaging characters, and witty and irreverent writing and dialogue. Mr Rosen's indepth knowledge and expertise in the world of baseball adds real credibility to the story and once you meet Harvey Blissberg, and the rest of the gang, you'll be hooked. So sit down and get comfortable; Strike Three You're Dead is about to grab you on page one and I can guarantee this mystery won't let you go until you've read the very last page.

If you're a baseball fan and a murder mystery fan then you will enjoy this work from R.D. Rosen. Harvey Blissburg, star player on a hapless expansion team, is suddenly involved in a sensational mystery as his best friend and star reliver Rudy Furth is found murdered in the whirlpool. With the help of Mickey, his sportscaster girifriend, Harvey doggedly puts together the pieces of the puzzle trying to find out who murdered his best friend. One red herring after another intervenes - a love struck fan, an inept and unscrupulous cop, the team manager's amourous wife who has a story of her own to tell and a small time hood. But Harvey presses on, all the while trying to hang on to his fading career and reach a .300 batting average.

The book gives an amzingly detailed portrait of a baseball season as a backdrop for the murder. This will appeal to baseball fans (such as me). But the author does not spare any detail in providing the reader with clues as to who the murderer is. He balances the drama of a baseball season with the drama of a murder mystery and does it very well. I read this book in a day because I did not want to put it down.

Strike Three You're Dead has alot to offer for baseball fans and murder myatery fans. It is very entertaining and spellbinding.

"FLOH" is made up entirely of hundreds of photographs found or purchased at German flea markets (floh markts), with the photos artfully arranged and sized, and presented without captions or text of any kind.
The book's photos range from a shirtless man carrying a large icicle, to a turn of the century little boy happily feeding chickens, to three women carrying giant leaves, to a man standing by exotic waterfalls, to hippies playing lawn darts. Some are funny, some are intriguing, some are both. Many of the photos are historic, many are puzzling, and all are presented in their original colors or tints, and thematically connected. The lack of commentary makes every picture a mystery, and makes every picture the seed of a story. A writer having problems with inspiration could find the perfect solution to his writer's block right here.
Tacita Dean has conceived and executed something unique and beautiful here. "FLOH" would make an excellent coffee table book, but it's also the sort of thing perfect for passing around at parties, puzzling over with a friend, or studying by yourself. It's the sort of thing that suggests it holds the mysteries of the universe within its pages...although maybe it only holds clues.

This is a hilarious collection of photos Tacita picked up at German flea markets (Floh means "flea" in German), but it brings up some serious ideas. There is no text in the book except for the title on the cover. So without any text to put these pictures in context, the viewer is left to imagine the stories behind them. These are concrete records of existance, yet they don't mean anything to us looking at them. Because she includes photos of a similar nature yet completely unrelated to one another, these individual experiences show us universals we have in common. This is an excellent work loaded with intellectual implications; a true joy to look through.

This is a very original storyline and the characters are well fleshed and thought out. I can tell that the author has a personal voice in this piece, something that when used right, gives each writer his/her own "signature". Dr. Everett doesn't try to write like someone else; he writes the story as he would like to see it written.

This book is about two Americans who inherit some Faberge jewelry, including a number of the famous eggs, from a Russian who might or might not have stolen them from the Bolsheviks way back when. Of course the Soviets now want them and most of the novel is about the chase to find and retrieve the eggs. I personally liked the heroine best since she's your all-American girl type, and the aunt who reminded me so much of Aunt Hilda (cranky but sweet). There's a lot of local color about Scandinavia and a bit of history about the Russian revolution, which I like in small dollops, so this was a book for your brain as well as your heart. Like the movie guys say, two thumbs up!

I got this book yesterday and finished it late last night 'cause I couldn't put it down. It was a spy novel (kinda) and a caper (kinda) and a romance (kinda) all rolled into one ... with lots of history about the Russian revolution and Faberge eggs and the Soviets and stuff. Some people don't like a lot of historical background, but I do, and this was a great read. The heroine was cool and smart, and the hunky guy was kinda prudish but the kind of guy you want to bring home to mom (let HER marry him! ha, not really). Anyway, I ordered it because it was about Faberge eggs and some Russian mafia type just paid 100 million for 7 of them, so it was topical and that's something else I like in novels (yea, I know I just said I like history, but hey, who's counting?). Anyway, for a fun, fast read that actually teaches you something, I recommend this book for anybody who has a brain. The rest of you go back to your online gaming 'cause your nerdy buddies are looking for you.
