A nice little book for those beginning to see interest in civil war firearms. Nicely orgnaized. Well written. Well illustrated. Provides a brief history on the mainly used firearms and their accouterments. Then provides basic instruction in their use.

A good book to have.

Great compilation for a work billed as an "introduction"

Coates and Thomas have produced a very usable and informative work. Titling it an "introduction" is somewhat misleading. While it might only be 96 pages long, it is a very full and well illustrated 96 pages. Certainly it is not fully detailed and does not present all arms, but neither is this a superficial sampling.

The overall format is an introduction to each weapon with basic specifications, several paragraphs of text about development use and production, a photograph of the weapon, a period photograph of a soldier armed with the same, and a photo of the cartridge. This is repeated for each major weapon. There are also several other general information sections about various aspects of small arms. Of considerable use to wargamers is a section listing known weapons of MANY regiments (looks like at least 1,000.)

If this is but an introduction, I should very much like to see a complete work on the subject by these authors.

This book is extremely well organized, has clear black and white photos of the guns, sample portraits of actual soldiers with the guns and of the ammuntion. The text is concise, but clear and not technical, perfect for a beginner like me. Since buying and reading it, I've been able to quickly recognize guns I've seen in museums, without even having the book with me.

This book is not only good for kids, but a good book for adults who are just getting started with polymer clay. I've been using polymer clay for years and got some great ideas for my own art from this book. My kids love the variety of projects and are excited about working with PC.

Great! Fun! Super!

This is a wonderful book. It is GREAT! And not only for kids. It has inspired me even though I'm WAY past the kid stage :o) I've done countless craft programs with various ages of children in the past 10 years, so I know what it takes to work with children. This book is wonderful for kids to use on their own or for adults to follow. The directions are clear & everything is easy to understand. I LOVE the kids in the book. Lark did a great job with the photos. They look like they are having fun :o) My favorites ideas are the"Makin' Faces Face Plates" (what a riot!), "Pushpinzzzzzzzz", "Fine Feathered Friends", and "Spirit Dolls". I'm planning to give a copy of the book to a friend's 9 year-old daughter for Christmas.

Way better than five stars!

I was so happy to participate in making some of the projects in this book and with Irene Dean writing it, I knew the book was naturally going to be good.

But, when I received it, I was totally floored at the quality - hardcover, great paper, clear pictures, well-written instructions. It was so much better than I'd even anticipated.

This book was written for someone much younger than I am, but I found it completely entertaining, throughout. Very thorough "basics" section, including a look at making simple canes, then on to the projects. Lively and colorful from cover to cover.

Jazzy, upbeat writing, hip kids in artful demonstration, wonderful photography, lots of humor and cool fonts surround each of the thirty projects. There are beginner items to advanced - critters, jewelry, things to make for gifts, from simple to sophisticated - kids are going to absolutely love this book! And just in time to give to a young person before the appearance of "summer doldrums," too. :)

But, I don't think its appeal is limited to the 8-14 years-old age bracket because IMO, most adults would find it fun, too. I'd recommend this one to beginning clayers of any age.

Congratulations to Irene and her terrific editor for a fabulous, fun book!

My mistake was reading this collection on dark and stormy nights. These three books grasp the reader by the throat and force them to read. Lightning is a Sci-Fi time roller coaster ride that brings the reader into another world. One they thought they knew. The Face of Fear is a superbly written analysis of what's possible when a person's back is against a wall (literally). The Vision so painstakingly describes the inner mind of a clairvoyant that I was left feeling greatful I don't have the gift.

I have read this book four times and I have no doubt I will read it again. It is absolutely the best book I have ever read. It has a story within a story and the time travel aspect is so believable that you actually wonder if time travel is possible. The characters are so real and you have suspense, terror, heartache and love all thrown in to make a great "can't put down" book.

One of the best books I have ever read.

O.K....the Chapter of which Thoreau speaks of love is enought to have and to hold this book. :) Just brilliant and intimate. He speaks of our relationships as "ascending" or "decending". Imagination being more important and sensitive than the heart. If either one is damaged then they both become estranged. When present the object of love expands and grows unending...the best stuff ever!

This is a sweet correspondence between two friends that will enlighten all who read it.

I had not previously delved into any collections of Thoreau's correspondence before reading this book, but had only read the occasional quotes from letters in other works. I was surprised to find such a wealth of ideas--thoughts every bit as beautifully expressed and quotable as any in Thoreau's best books. I immediately began underlining favorite passages and discovered over sixty real gems.

H.G.O. Blake and Thoreau carried on an irregular correspondence over thirteen years starting in 1848, and their relationship changed in that time from student/teacher to friends. Editor Bradley Dean does a wonderful job of thoughtfully introducing the correspondence, of providing background information to give context to each letter, and in offering extensive notes to clarify references. The result is a book every bit as enjoyable to read as Walter Harding's annotated Walden. It gives you an intimate look at the brilliant man who many have thought lacked ordinary human feelings. As Edward O. Wilson wrote for the back cover, "In its spontaneity it is the next best thing to personal conversations with the man himself."

A Gem of a Book!

"Letters to a Spiritual Seeker" by the magnificent Henry David Thoreau is a wonderful and spiritually inspired/inspiring book! I just got it, and it's perfect for dipping into for Thoreau's deep and moving insights. Bradley P. Dean's footnotes are excellent and very helpful, and I am grateful for the effort he has put into making these letters available to us.

One of my favorite and profoundly thought-provoking letters is the one where he speaks about a muskrat's den he found (during his wanderings) in an analogy for understanding how so much "doing" is necessary for arriving at a little bit of "being" in this world. There is something realistic but consoling at the same time in reading that letter. The book is worth getting just for this letter alone!

Although he wrote in the 19th century, many of his deeper ideas are still valid and very spiritually nourishing, and this book makes me want to read Thoreau's other writings.

Although this book is not a guide to Hawaiian Lighthouses, this is what we used it for, when we were in Hawaii, photographing the major lighthouses for our own book "Lighthouses of the Hawaiian Islands". We also used it to plan our trip. Love Dean has told the history, the stories, with accompanying black and white photos. Our book, all color photos, is a great companion piece to "Lighthouses of Hawaii". Anyone interested in Hawaii's Lighthouses needs both books. WE are known as "the Lighthouse People" because we have photographed every lighthouse in the United States.

Dean Sherman shares many insights to the world of dating based on Biblical principles and his wealth of experience. He is not the usual 25 year-old lad who sets out to tell everyone about dating, but he actually has a number of years in a committed relationship with his wife. Also, this book is written for both males and females so it could be a great resource for couples to read together. I have never seen a more practical and realistic approach to the subject. You must read this book if you are serious about getting dating right.

Dean Sherman has written an excellent book about the complicated world of dating. This is a balanced, Biblical approach to relationships in general, with specific reference to how singles should interact with other singles. He never mandates that singles stop dating, but encourages them to follow a Biblical model of what is wise and loving. Sherman's writing style is converstional and often humorous, with many Biblical references. I feel like I've read nearly every book out there on the subject and this is by far the best. A MUST READ for every Christian single!

Topographic View of Yosemite Valley -- A Winner!

If you want a great bird's eye view of Yosemite Valley to orient yourself to the location or if you plan to hike around the Valley -- you want this map. It's plain, simple, to the point and gives you an up front idea of what the terrain is like in an oblique topographic view -- almost three-demensional.

The other side of the map is filled with information about hikes and scenic wonders of Yosemite Valley. I'm sure Ansel Adams would have approved of this one for getting around the place! Fabulous supplement to the NPS guide.

And if you want a broader view of Yosemite NP, National Geographic has a fabilous fold out map.

It gives you an up close view of Yosemite Valley mapped. No more squinting and turning your Yosemite park map every which way just to get a bird's eye view of the valley trails. Major trails are listed along with their milage. It even gives an adequate view of how the trails bend and curve, so you have a rough idea what to expect while out on your valley hikes. Included in the map is historical captions about some of the landmarks along with blk/wht and color photo snippets. There is even a basic park phone directory and a time line of historical events. This is a great magnified map made from a thick durable paper and easy to handle because of its smaller size, NO map folding FUSS! That's an A+ in itself. Just an overall great map to take along on your hikes.

A Unique Cartographic Product, and Much More!

This large-scale, easy-to-read map of Yosemite Valley and surrounding areas is a must-have for anyone visiting Yosemite National Park, especially if you are a hiker. Instead of a straight down view, as is done in most maps, you see the valley from an oblique perspective, from south of the valley, with the mountains shown as they would look in 3-Dimensions - a very pleasing effect. All trails are shown, of course, but also bicycle paths, shuttle bus stops, campgrounds, picnic areas, restrooms, parking areas, etc.

But this is only the beginning! Each trail also has its own description, including approximate time to complete, distance, elevation gain, and trailhead location. Another really nice feature is that many "Vista Points" are included, which are shown on the map, including which direction to look, and are described in their own section, complete with a color photo. Several other parts of the park are also descibed, with photos. There are also detailed write-ups concerning Yosemite's history and geology, plus info on tourist facilities at Yosemite Village. And last, but not least, lots of Natural History information, including photos and drawings to aid in identification of mammals, birds, wildflowers and trees found in the area.

Writing as one who has been a cartographer for more than twenty years, and also as an avid hiker, I wish that I had the opportunity to produce something like this myself!

I bought this book after I heard Dr. Laura Schlessinger tell her audience that it was as funny as anything Erma Bombeck had written. Dr. Laura was partly correct...only comment I have is that this book is FAR more humorous than what I recall from the wonderful Erma. I echo Dr. Laura's comments: You simply have to buy this book. If you're a Mom, you're going to laugh, and laugh and laugh.

Diane has done an excellent job of capturing the "How did I get here" part of Mommyhood and the "I went to college for this" thoughts many new moms feel. Dean-Epps gracefully and humorously discusses tpics pertinent to all new and "old" moms. We will all relate! As a mom of five (9, 8, 4, 2, 1), I enjoyed this book!

Funny as a stand-up comedy routine!

I truly enjoyed this book and intend to recommend it to every mom (and dad, too) that I know. Reading these slice-of-life snippets is a lot like having a chat with a good friend on a morning walk. She covers subjects familiar to all of us--from ATM machines to pest control to getting (and paying for) crowns at the dentist's office. She, by the way, mentioned her crown was $680. I just paid $840 for mine!

Ms. Dean-Epps, it was fun getting to know the "amalgam that is you!" My only complaint is that I wasn't ready for the book to end. Will there be more?

This is the second in the Icerigger series and one of a number of books in the Commonwealth Universe by Foster. The way that he incorporates information from the other novels of the commonweath gives this book, and the series, a form of history and background usually missing in such works. It also is so well done that even if you haven't read any of the other commonwealth books, it is easy to keep up with the action and become almost involved in the events happening in the book. I just hope that they bring the Icerigger Trilogy back in a hardcover one book format, so that many more people can become fans of Fosters. Definitely a must read.

Foster did a wonderful job with this whole series, and I sincerely feel someone in the publishing industry needs to grab these books and re-print them. They are simply fantastic and are one of Alan Dean Foster's best.

Outstanding primer for both the new investor and the more experienced investor interested in improving her/his investing savvy.

First, this book illustrates rather convincingly, how investing just a moderate amount of money consistently over a period of time, can build personal wealth beyond most people's highest expectations. Makes it clear that there are no "guaranteed, get rich quick approaches" but that by being patient and investing in any of a broad range of solid investments...."financial serenity" is definitely within reach.

Then, this book explains the basics of personal financial management; including life insurance, real estate, stocks, bonds, mutual funds, REITs, futures, annuities, 401k plans, IRAs and tips to help determine which is right for you. This explanation of the basics, provides a framework which can be used to help individuals determine which investment vehicles fit their personal financial profile/style, and how they can take the first steps in building a personal financial plan which can secure their future.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in improving their financial position in life. It is written by one of the world's leading financial management experts in terms that anyone, from any walk of life/profession can easily understand.
