This is a wonderfully imanginative story about the origins of the Chinaman's Hat island which lies just offshore on the windward side of Oahu. The book is beautifully illustrated by the author. A great story for young and old alike.

An imaginative tale of the origins of a Hawaii landmark.

The author (and illustrator) takes a new and unique look at the imagined origin of Oahu's Chinaman's Hat island. Beautifully and whimsically illustrated by the author, the book weaves a wonderful tale of a small boy from China with big dreams of seeing the world. Through his travels to Hawaii he discovers that, although small in stature he is big in heart and in abilities. Written for children this book would be equally loved by children of all ages and adults alike.

My dad gave me a copy of this book to read when I was in my early teens. I had a devil of the time trying to find a copy of it now, however. This really surprises me because it's truly a classic of small boat voyaging. It's a very well written account of a tremendous piece of sailing by a humble, straight-forward man and a fabulous yarn, as well. It's an especially good book to pick up next time you find yourself grumbling about how confined your twenty-five footer is and that you "need" a bigger boat...

After I read this book, I renamed my 1969 Volkswagen van Tinkerbelle and set off on a "circumnavigation" of North America (although I'm an Alaska fisherman, I'm still terrified of water). We should all be as brave or gutty as this solo sailer.
"Tinkerbelle" should have become a Hollywood movie--I imagine Tom Hanks playing Manry--and for anyone who has ever had a nutty dream, this book is a must read!

Tinkerbelle is such a great story of a solo voyage across the Atlantic, 40 years ago this summer, that the Cleveland Memory Project is making an e-book edition of it, which will be available, along with a lot of other Tinkerbelle history materials, around August 1st. Look for it on-line (I'm not allowed to furnish the address) and also buy a regular print copy for a comfortable read, if you can find one. It's well worth your time.

robert manry's `tinkerbelle' story is so great, and so well written, that i can't believe no one else has reviewed it, and that it appears to be so terribly forgotten. manry was a flatlander, a mid-life copy editor with Cleveland's daily Plain Dealer in the early 1960's, with a wife and children, when he bought a 13 foot sailing dinghy for family fun. one winter he put a tiny home-made cabin on it, and then, when his plans to take a long vacation and join on a friend's bigger boat for the `sail of a lifetime' across the atlantic fell through, he decided to secretly try the same voyage solo in his dinghy instead. manry is such an everyman, and so matter-of-fact, and yet his journey is ultimately simply a stunning feat of sailing, and rendered so skillfully and enjoyably in this fine little account. ridiculously, the book appears to be nearly lost to the sands of time, yet for pure sailing adventure and reading enjoyment tinkerbelle deserves to be right alongside the great sailing classics like robin lee graham's `dove' and tania aibe's `maiden voyage'. enjoy!

Not many books make me want to keep them to re-read later but this one did! Gracia offers a lot of wisdom from the lessons she has learned as a hostage, wife, widow and mother. Yet she does so in a down to earth way that makes you feel like you are talking to a neighbor from down the street. Get one to keep for reading when you are going through tough times--and one to give to a friend. Gracia's thoughts on how to focus on God's grace in the midst of turmoil offer a lot of comfort and practical advice.

Rare book that shows HOW leaders made decisions...

Review Date: 2007-01-06
Most 'leadership' and business books are theortical. Johnson's book actually adds some entertianment value to it's leadership "how to" since it encompasses indivdidual stories from leaders who have faced challenges. It is like 19 mini-novels in one book.

My favorite was the story of how a man took a stand risking certain bankruptcy to make all car dealerships ban odometer roll-backs.

I don't know why the new book - TL2 isn't out on Amazon. As good as the first is, Transparent Leader 2 is even more amazing.

What is True Leadeship?

Review Date: 2001-07-16
Leadership can be defined as influencing others in a positive way to attain organizational goals, or put another way, getting things done by, with, and through people. The assumption is that effective leadership will foster acceptance of, and commitment to, organizational goals, generate a degree of enthusiasm for the task at hand, elicit voluntary cooperation, promote teamwork, and result in maximum levels of motivation and productivity on both an individual employee and group basis. Whether it be in business, sport, government, or a nonprofit or volunteer organization this is the challenge which faces everyone who assumes a leadership role. This book is a must for all who are in position of leadership. It is testimonial of 19 well known and successful men who have faced similar difficulties as others will face in their role as leaders. It will prepare them to learn from intensity, integrity, intelligence, determination, devotion, and dedication of these men in order to become spiritually, financially, and morally successful.

Real-Life Stories Foster Challenge & Inspiration

I've read plenty of books dealing with leadership...but none like this one. As the CEO of a 100-employee firm myself, I'm well aware of the tendency for those of us in leadership (and men in general) to suppress and contain our own struggles...often eventually to our own detriment.

This book provides a refreshing alternative view featuring several well-known and successful men revealing the freedom and power they have realized in their personal, spiritual, and business lives -- by transparently sharing their struggles, failures, and successes.

Though I was already aware of these concepts prior to reading the book, the real-life examples and willingness to share by these men are compelling - some of the stories even riveting - and all are an inspiration. It doesn't matter if you're a professional burger-flipper or the leader of thousands...at least some of the short accounts in this book are sure to speak to you.

Seeing Clearly The Leaders of Today
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2002-08-05
Being a leader in todayýs world is not what it used to be. There was a time, when a leader was tough, rugged and quiet. That time is no more. It is time for leaders to let their guard down, to show their true selves, to lead by following and to lead by example. The Transparent Leader shows many of todayýs national leaders in this light. It shows them being transparent, vulnerable and initially with no protection. Along the same lines of Jesus, they step into the worlds of other people and lead them, ultimately showing the way to the one true God. It shows who these leaders were, the situations they were in and how they succeeded in becoming great leaders. All of them have one thing in common; they all know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour.

The text shows leaders who have failed, where they failed, and how they came to succeed. The leaders within the compilation tell their story, either via testimony or anecdote. Some open their entire lives to the reader so they can see the heart of the storyteller. Although the booklover might not be able to identify with all of the passages throughout the book, there is no doubt that more than one will hit the heart and soul of the reader.

Should this book be required reading for all future leaders of the world? I believe that it should. It offers inspiration to those people who are not yet world leaders and it offers a reality check for those who are in the top echelon of leadership.

The dean of album art

Review Date: 2006-02-18
Roger Dean is best known for his groundbreaking work in LP cover art, including Yes, Uriah Heep, Osibisa, and other names from the 1970s music world. This great collection pulls together Dean's early work, including sketches, student work from his time at the Royal College of Art, and set design for the Yes tour stages.

I usually think of Dean as a visual artist, so his furniture, sets, and architectural interests were a pleasant surprise. It would have been helpful to have better identification of year in which each piece done. That's a small enough complaint, though. This is an outstanding collection of his work, and an interesting reference point for comparing the 70s culture to todya's.

The architypal album cover artist of the early seventies period, Roger Dean produced covers for seventies album artists such as Yes, Gentle Giant, Greenslade and even Osibisa. This, his first of a number of publications, contains his early and best work. For fans of the progressive rock group "Yes" it also contains a number of photographs from their ambitious "Tales from Topographic Oceans " tour. This book should be reprinted NOW and is a must for all ardent "Yes " fans.

Roger Dean's artwork has been featured on the record and CD coversof Yes, Aisa, and Pink Floyd. He has displayed his artistic talent since Yes' "Fragile" LP in 1972. His work belongs in a museum display (I did see a print of the Fragile cover in the Hayden Planetarium) and this book (if you're lucky enough to get your hands on it) is recommended to avid Yes fans! It features the covers of "Topographic Oceans", "Beginnings", "Relayer", "Yessongs", and the inner gatefold of "Close to the Edge". Simply breathtaking! And in need of a reprint soon!

Groundbreaking when it was first published, this unique book has remained a benchmark in both art and publishing. Dean founded his own Paper Tiger imprint to release this collection of his designs. The book is sized the same as an old vinyl album, and contains dozens of his architectural/fantasy world renderings, know best as the covers of the majority of the YES albums, along with many other rock projects. Essential for the fans of Dean, it covers his schooling, 2D and 3D design projects, and an amazing array of full color, high quality reproductions of his ink and watercolor paintings.

I enjoyed reading about the adventures of those weasel brothers. It reminded me of things we did as kids. It also reminded me of some of lifes lessons, and how they are learned. I think that children can relate to some of the confusion that they face and how they resolve it,with of course the encouragement of the weasel moms and dads of the burrough. Hey, can weasels wag their tails,(the ones thath have them) I thought I saw a weasel wink at me. I hope that this is not the last adventure the weasel brothers get up to.

The book was excellent mainly for two very good reasons. One, it reminded me of my youth and all the crazy, but innocent things siblings do to eachother. It also sparks the idea that deep down we still do crazy things or at least we should. It is also a reminder that we as adults need to play more. Secondly, as I read the book to my five year old neice she just giggled and giggled. The sound of a childs giggle is good medicine for both of us. In one sitting I had to read it to her three times and got the same result each time! The book created a pleasant memory for her, two weeks time had passed since reading the book and she still commented and laughed about it without rereading it. Spending quality time with children is very important, this book holds the interest of the child, thus it is an excellent tool for we adults, who at times, lack the creativity to hold their attention on our own!

Weasal Brothers Book Review

The book is amusing for both children and adults alike. The context is pure, honest and simple. For we adults it awakens our childhood memories and inspires us to share our own stories with our children. The story is real life stuff and allows us to find humor in the things, that at the moment may not have been so amusing, like coating your brother or sister with syrup. As children we secretly laughed about those times and as adults we openly talk about them. The book brings out into the open, those little mischeivous secrets that we all have, child and adult alike. I enjoy reading books to my neice and this book in particular has left a lasting impression. My five year old niece and I laugh about it's context everytime we see eachother, we discuss parts of the book in detail. It has helped create yet another special bond between us, child and adult, a gift more precious than anything.

My family thoroughly enjoys reading the book, One Too Many Weasels. I like the lesson it teaches about accepting new people by appreciating their differences. This lesson is valuable in growing families and children's first experiences at school. My children like the descriptions of situations familiar to them; riding bikes, "spooky closets", hanging from trees, and wrestling with Dad, to mention a few. All of us enjoy the beautiful illustrations! The pictures are both an amusing and colorful supplement to the story. I'm sure you and your little weasels will enjoy this wonderful story too.

Original thinking on M&A
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2003-02-12
This is the first original thinking on M&A that I've seen recently. Most of the M&A books go on and on about why mergers work or don't work. Winning the Merger Endgame talks about M&A in terms of its effect on industries and how they consolidate and change over time. The endgames model is intriguingly displayed as an S curve. I would only quibble slightly over the horizontal time axis, which makes the time span for each stage seem more specific than it probably is. But the research is solid and long-term.

In a glut of milquetoast business books, "Winning the Merger Endgame" stands out as a gem. The combination of solid research, analysis and writing style results in a credible, useful book that anyone interested in business should read. The heart of the book is a model that describes and predicts how industries consolidate. It's a compelling discovery that will undoubtedly change--and chart--business strategies for years. Bottom line: read it and use it.

I read this book with great interest. Working in retail for more than 10 years now, this book matched my experience and helps me to forecast what might happen in my industry over the next couple of years. Although I - as well as many other readers - have an idea of what could happen or what is probably, this book with the underlying research of thousands of companies over more than 10 years and the expertise of a consulting powerhouse brings the findings to the point and quantifies them. The only small disadvantage is the title: as the book is not only focusing on mergers, but on consolidation trends as a whole (therefore also valid in times where consolidation trends are fought via price wars and organic growth).

I would already speculate that this book will become a real classic and I recommend it to any strategist, CEO or CFO interested in the mechanics of consolidation trends and finding long term survival strategies.

I bought this in a used bookstore for [$$] in 1997, and have made it part of my daily routine ever since. I started using this after having used the one-year bible and one year new testament for several years each, and wanted something that didn't cut off passages in midstream....I especially wanted more of the Psalms, since the prayers of others are a wonderful way to hear God's voice speaking to your own life.

The bonus was, I found some wonderful passages in Proverbs that seem to be written just for me.

Each day, you read 5 Psalms, and a chapter of Proverbs. This isn't a substitute for studying the rest of scripture, but is a wonderful devotional habit I plan to continue for the rest of my life.

This is a wonderful way to fulfill the need to read a steady diet of God's Word. It allows you to read selected Psalms and Proverbs once every day. It is nicely broken up so that you can turn back and read it over and over without feeling you are missing any part of devotional and yet is not so much that you cannot read and enjoy His Word with only a few minutes a day.
