For holocaust survivor to endure the evils of concentration camps and not become bitter towards life and humanity in general is an accomplishment in itself. The book is well written. I can't say I enjoyed reading about the inhumanity that can be directed towards humanity, but it is a necessary book that needed to be written for future generations to learn from. I am glad the book was written for that reason alone. I wanted to add my aggreement with all the other good reveiws here.

A Great Book.

This book is one that anyone can and should read. There are so many books out there about the Holocaust, but this is straight from the survivors mouth. You won't get a more vivid or perfect picture of what really happened those fateful days in the concentration and death camps set in motion by Adolf Hitler. Take the time to read this rendition. You won't forget what it was about after you put it down.

Amazingly written book.

The author of this book actually came and spoke to my 8th grade class a few years back, and he had told us in great detail of everything that had happened to him. What he said in person and in the manner that he said it made me by his book. This book is possibly one of the best books about one's personal experience during the holocaust i have ever read. I ended up reading it in about a day and a half. This book is very good but quite graphic and may not be for the younger ones, but being able to hear this poor man speak about his life, and then be able to a copy of his book autographed by him just really makes it special.

This is deffinetly a must buy.

David Needham is one of the professors I've had the pleasure to sit under at Multnomah Bible College. This was the textbook to his Spiritual Life class at the school, back when he still taught it there. I have become deeply impacted not only by the book, but by the man behind it. David Needham is one of the most passionate teachers I've ever seen. When I read his book for the first time it turned a 180 in my Christian life. I realized how many of Satan's lies I'd been kept under, even in my Christian life. This book has impacted my life and relationship with God more than I can possibly say. Dear Christian, do you know who you are? Just another plain old sinner, saved by grace? Please don't buy into that lie! Read David Needham's book, and let the truth of the Word of God liberate you to dimensions of life you've never dreamed of!

"Birthright" is the updated, revised, expanded edition of Needham's earlier work by the same title.

Needham has done Christians a great service in biblically explaining the nature of our new nature in Christ. He teaches from the Scriptures with precision, clarity, and practicality who we are in Christ.

Carefully and graciously, he describes how the notion that Christians are not saints is inadequate. With depth, he demonstrates that the flesh and the old nature/sin nature are not the same.

The result is an increased joy in our regeneration and an increased confidence in sanctification through Christ.

Of all the terrific books I've read, there are only a few to which I return again and again; "Birthright," by David Needham, is on that list. I do not return to it simply to remember a concept, like a reference book. I keep this book close at hand because I need it, again and again.

I think this is a 5 Star book; but as an author of the book
I feel that it would be inappropriate to give it more than 4 Stars.
I do want to thank all readers who have reviewed the book, regardless of the number of stars. These things happened in our long lives (born before Lindbergh flew the Atlantic for the first time), experienced WWII, Korean War, Viet Nam War, Desert Storm, and now Iraq). We have more books coming.

The Black The Grey And The Gold
I found the reading of this book quite moving and interesting. Most of it was fast paced and at other times it was bogged down in surrounding detail. The descriptions of the surroundings were overly detailed. The action sequences were good. Parts where spouses were included were somewhat believable and other action parts involving spouses seemed a little far fetched. The validity of those sections is not in question just the feasability. As the main characters in this book seem to be portrayed as "over the hill" I question that some of them could have done what was said.
Overall I would recommend this book and I enjoyed it.

Old age doesn't have to result in helplessness. "Black Gold Gray" follows a group of World War II veterans as they embark on a mission way past their prime - to go into the most current modern conflict, found in Iraq. Their adventure takes them all over Europe and Northern Africa, in their goal to find out exactly why the United States invaded Iraq. "Black Gold Gray" is an old school, deftly written political thriller, highly recommended to fans of the genre and community library collections seeking their patronage.

Very interesting read....

I had the pleasure of meeting on of the authors at the Bookexpo in LA, and we talked a bit. His personal experience caught my interest, so I read the book. I have a lot of international military background, and the concept of this book, WWII veterans, Class of '49 West Point, having to activate themselves to save one of their members from an international plot in Iraq, was pretty thought provoking.

The characters are all introduced quite well, and they seemed very plausible, to the point of suspecting that the authors had built these characters quite closely to the men they knew in that class. I mentioned my own international/military experience because you can't fool with these things- you either know them or you don't, and it is impossible to provide the level of detail and the feeling of these places- Paris, Morocco, etc, without the author having been there, done that.

I found the politics a bit off-putting, I am pretty conservative and there is some serious "Bush-bashing" going on in the book, but all in all this is a five-star yarn. Doesn't mean the evil oil money fantasy isn't right, either, because that sure happens.

Worth the read. I urge the reader to take the time, because the perspectives and the flavor of the experiences in this book are darn sure worth it.

Thanks for the book, I truly enjoyed it

Rarely does a book appear that is entertaining, fast, exciting, believable, and straightforward about the reality of a world that is affecting us now. It is real, alive, and compelling.

The moment you turn to the first page of the story you know it has you. The authors have done an excellent job of preparing the reader for a very fast pace by providing a "Cast of Characters," "Locations," and Preface prior to launching the story. Taking the time to "get warmed up" causes the reader to want to jump into the book. The characters are believable and the reader instantly feels part of the story.

The pace is fast, believable, and easy to follow. The authors have not overcomplicated the text with unnecessary verbiage. They do an excellent job of describing locations, surroundings, the environment, and the feel of each location. Many of the readers will have been to some of the locals, making it all the more believable. Some of us having spent time in the military will have a special affinity for the commitment, bravery, honor, and very human attributes of the characters.

This is an important read that captivates you; and brings you up close to many of today's realities both home and abroad. The authors salt the story with insight into what is happening politically, militarily, and economically. The poignancy of the book brings to mind a lot to ponder.

"The Blue Planet - Seas of Life"!

Review Date: 2008-07-17
The Blue Planet - Seas of Life is the companion book to the BBC documentary of the same name. As has been mentioned in earlier reviews, the photography is stunning. The book is very concise, easy to follow (although at times it can get a little technical) and really, just fun to read.

Seeing as how it's the companion book to the series, it has a lot of shared information and is quite similar. Still, there is plenty of new information not mentioned in the series. There are, though, a few differences in the order of programs from the series and chapters from the book...

Programs:

1. OCEAN WORLD

2. FROZEN SEAS

3. OPEN OCEAN

4. THE DEEP

5. SEASONAL SEAS

6. CORAL SEAS

7. TIDAL SEAS

8. COASTS

Chapters:

1. THE WATER PLANET: With water generally so available to us at the turn of a tap, it is easy to forget how essential it is for life on Earth. Water, collected in the great ocean basins, regulates the planet's temperature and climate as well as providing numerous habitats for plant and animal life.

2. LIFE ON THE EDGE: Around the borders of the ocean, where the land meets the sea, lie some of the most challenging of the ocean habitats. From sandy beaches to rocky shores and river estuaries, waves and weather constantly erode coastal areas. While many creatures come here to breed, there are few permanent residents. Those that do live here must be hardy and adaptable enough to survive the daily ebb and flow of the tides, which transform their habitat on a daily basis.

3. TROPICAL SEAS: The warm waters of the tropics are relatively poor in nutrients and oxygen, making substantial stretches of the shallows somewhat barren. However, in certain areas, where conditions are favourable, seagrass beds, mangroves and the most diverse marine communities of all - coral reefs - can be found. The efficient recycling of nutrients in these habitats allows them to flourish.

4. TEMPERATE SEAS: The green, algae-rich waters of the world's temperate zones are some of the most productive on the planet. These intensely seasonal areas see an annual cycle of boom and bust that depends upon the plankton: a bounty for which many animals will migrate thousands of miles to harvest. These waters are also home to most of the world's seaweed and the underwater cliffs are festooned with invertebrates that are as colorful as any coral reef.

5. FROZEN SEAS: The perimeters of the frozen seas of the Arctic and Antarctic attract surprising numbers of birds, seals and whales. But most of these migrate away as the annual sea ice forms in autumn; only a handful remain to cope with the rigours of a polar winter.

6. THE OPEN OCEAN: Much of this seemingly limitless wilderness is a virtual desert, yet in the right conditions life explodes into intense productivity. This is a world in perpetual motion: plankton engage in an incessant daily migration from the dark depths to the surface and back, and many of the most powerful marine predators cruise these shelterless seas in search of prey. But simply finding food is not enough: somehow each species must ensure the survival of their offspring in this most unforgiving of habitats.

7. THE DEEP: Below 150 m (492 feet), where there is no longer enough light for photosynthesis, the deep ocean begins. By far the largest habitat for life on Earth, it is also the one about which we know least, since the enormous pressures and perpetual darkness make exploration extremely difficult. Until very recently thought to be barren, we now know that in these inhospitable waters lives a rich variety of extraordinary creatures that have adapted in a variety of ways for life in this challenging environment.

A great companion book to the series (can also work as a stand-alone volume) is well worth the time it takes to read it, (and it does take a while, seeing as how there's 380+ pages) highly recommended!

The quality is amazing, glossy full color pages all the way though and detailed glimpses into each episode and a breakdown of each season (season 1 and 2 so far). There's interviews and antidotes galore on the actors, creative behind the scenes of the making of the show. You can't go wrong by investing in the purchase of this book. David Cole is an exceptionally talented writer or I would have stopped reading this book. That said I could not accept as realistic the main character's transformation from computer geek to gunshooting vigilante (and apparently accurate as hell the first time she ever shot a gun!).
There is so much to like about the writing even though it portrays the very dismal side of reservation life. The thought processes just didn't seem true to nature.
In fact I didn't look to see who the author was before reading and several chapters in I looked at the cover to see whether the author was male or female because it wasn't the way I thought a woman would talk or think. When I saw it was a male author I thought "Well that explains it" because it sounded like a guy not a woman.

Laura possesses real skill with computers, and the descriptions of her hacking are fascinating. Her complex past, along with her search for her husband and daughter, help the reader understand her more bizarre behaviors. I admired the way she was able to rein in her dependence on Ritalin--it was difficult to read about her continual pill-popping and the effects that the meds had on her. I've already finished the next book, and I'm looking forward to more.

David Cole's Butterfly Lost is an interesting, very well-written, novel about how the main character, Laura Winslow, navigates the vagaries of where life on and off the 'Rez' meet. A half-Hopi cyber hacker, Winslow uses a combination of modern computer skills and knowledge of ancient traditions to track the disappearance of a Hopi teenage girl. David Cole's use of rich and authentic detail weaves an intricate web of deception and intrigue that is enhanced with each succeeding chapter. Butterfly Lost captures and holds the attention of the reader through the last page. I highly recommend the book to anyone who enjoys a good mystery of any stripe. It is an especially good find for those who like novels about the southwest and Native American culture. I look forward to reading David Cole's next book, The Killing Maze.

One of my proudest moments as a mystery writer came at Tucson's Left Coast Crime mystery convention when I was given the honor of introducing David Cole to the mystery community. He was a member of the author panel I was moderating, and his debut mystery, BUTTERFLY LOST, had just been published. BUTTERFLY LOST features Laura Winslow--a Ritalin-abusing, cyper-hacking, half-Hopi--protagonist. BUTTERFLY LOST is a remarkable book because, at least to this reader, David Cole gets everything right. His work with Native American groups has provided him with the thorough cultural knowledge he presents in his book. Laura's computer expertise is completely convincing. David Cole knows well of what he writes. His plot is fast-paced and complex. He knows the Southwestern turf well. I cannot remember reading a more impressive debut novel. David Cole is an amazing talent.

Gomez-Arcos, Augustin. "The Carnivorous Lamb", Arsenal Pulp Press, 2007.

Haunting and Weirdly Unusual

Amos Lassen

Arsenal Pulp Press of Vancouver, Canada has been resurrecting gay and lesbian literature with Little Sister's Classics series. The newest addition is Augustin Gomez-Arcos' "The Carnivorous Lamb", written in 1975, which was translated into English in 1984 (from the original French). Gomez-Arcos was a Spanish anarchist, a dramatist and a playwright who self-exiled to France where he wrote primarily about Franco's Spain.
This book is an allegory about that period and centers on a young gay male who comes of age within a troubled family--his mother abhors him, his father cannot be bothered with him and ignores him. He does have a brother that loves him deeply.
The young man is the narrator and the carnivorous lamb. He begins his story when he was thirteen and when his innocence is lost. It is the 1950's when he, the younger of two sons is kept in the shelter of his home by his overbearing mother and at 13 he manages to begin to break away. He has a tutor, a strict disciplinarian and a family priest who is intent upon seeing that the boy reach adulthood by the right path. He, however, feels that he must rebel against those that oppress him and as he comes of age, he does so as a reaction to his mother and father and to the authority of church and state.
It is not an easy to reach maturity and as we read the tale of the family, we see that is political satire of the time. Gomez-Arcos not only takes on Spain but the Catholic Church as well. He does so with humor that disguises the true horrors and the tyrannical rule of Federico Franco. Likewise the book deals with the repression of religion and the structure of the family. The concept of authority is blown away and in its place we get identity and liberty as the author defies all in beautiful and provocative ways. This is a book not only to be read for the excitement of reading a masterpiece but it is to be cherished as a document that has returned to us from the dead.

Beautiful writing.

Agustin Gomez-Arcos, The Carnivorous Lamb (David R. Godine, 1975)

I find myself somewhat astonished that a book this explicit was published in 1975. I am quite a bit less surprised that it is long out of print. (However, the fact that my Interlibrary Loan request for this volume was filled by the Ohio Dominican College? Now that floored me.) This tale of a homosexual relationship between a pair of brothers, told mostly in flashback as the younger brother awaits his older brother's return, wife in tow, from South America, never flinches from its sometimes shocking subject matter, but nor does Gomez-Arcos ever exploit his material from gratuitous shock value; it just is, and that, perhaps, is the book's major strength.

The book follows two avenues, for lack of a better way to put it; the first follows the love story between Ignacio, the narrator, and Antonio, his brother, who is five years older. Yep, incest, but I did warn you above, right? The second is a portrait of a once-wealthy family gradually driven to destitution by the Spanish Civil War and the Franco dictatorship. I get the feeling most readers will be enchanted with one storyline and want to ignore the other (which is which depends on one's proclivities, no doubt); I tried to pay equal attention to both, and appreciated the way Gomez-Arcos wove them together into one book. It certainly could have been done better; the pacing is atrocious much of the time, and one gets the feeling this could have easily been half the length and still contained everything Gomez-Arcos wanted to say. Still, it's hard to argue with the language, which is never less than gorgeous. (One French reviewer on Amazon excoriates the English translation, saying it loses much of the "purity and clarity" of the original; I can't vouch for it, but I do know the language in the English translation is wonderfully done.) If you are a fan of writing style over plot, this is a must-read, but be warned that some of the subject matter may be too intense for more sensitive types (or too boring for thrillseekers). ****

((I award a Secondary Title for this review: "A One-Of-A-Kind Take on Brotherly Love"))

I can't tell you if this was a beautifully written book.......but I can advise you that it is a beautifully translated tale. Since it was first published in French (I know only a few phrases and a number of individual words), I cannot quarrel the earlier, Paris-residing reviewer who seems to think not so much of this translation. But, to this reader, to me, the translated writing seems near perfect, making this one of those few books to un-shelf from time to time and in which to become quickly engrossed.

It's a love story......but one probably unlike any you've read before (its nature has been described elsewhere in these reviews). And it is also a history lesson--one told from very personal points of view (as so much of history is told). But mostly, it's a tale which tells us that love in any guise can be found between two people, no matter their situation one to the other, and that as the strongest of our emotions it can redeem us from the worst difficulties we may think we face.

Its been a while since reading a book that was so profoundly satisfying and well-finished. It is a beautiful book celebrating an exuberant, deep love. It sells the book short to call it simply homo-erotic, just because the main protaganist is a man who loves his brother. The book deals with love and its devastating mutations in a protective confined stultyfying Spanish home in the Franco years. The metaphors for the "chronically dead" fascist regime are so graphic that you find yourself gasping for air...and the characters, as portrayed by Ignacio, the younger brother, are gruesomely real as he tells his story with wit and skill that have you smiling hard as you read. Very sexy too, even for a hetero woman.

This book came as an unexpected addition to my request for Lead Like A Pirate (also by Christopher Novak)... Conquering Adversity. Although the title would indicate that it's more geared towards overcoming adversity in the workplace, I found it much more suited to overcoming adversity in your personal life. As such, I think the book is much more valuable than one might imagine on first glance...

Contents:
Forward; August 10th; Strategy #1 - Affirmation; Strategy #2 - Expectation; Strategy #3 - Communication; Strategy #4 - Locomotion; Strategy #5 - Collaboration; Strategy #6 - Celebration; Today; Nuggets of Wisdom; About the Author

The book starts out by relating a moment in time that completely altered Novak's life... the day his wife and unborn child were killed in a car accident by a drug-impaired driver (who walked away from the crash). He went from a happily married man with a nine year-old son and a second child on the way to a single parent who had to bear a burden that's a worst case scenario in so many ways. I don't think there's any question that Novak has seen and experienced more than his share of adversity.

Through that incident, he explains six strategies that can help you to get your feet back on solid ground and make it through the dark times. By using those strategies, you won't take away the pain and suffering, but you won't be paralyzed by the loss, unable to pick up the pieces and move on. Each strategy has three steps that help you to apply it to your situation. For instance, Affirmation has the three steps of identifying your bedrock values, acknowledging what is and isn't lost, and accepting a healthy "selfishness". Each chapter also has a number of exercises at the end that you should work through to solidify the strategy in your life. Those exercises are ones that you can (and should) do now while you (hopefully) are not in the midst of despair. If you can establish these habits and mindsets during the "normal" times, then it'll be much easier to keep a certain level of mental clarity during the bad times.

I mentioned that it seems to be targeted at the workplace, and that's true. There's an application portion in each chapter that relates the strategies to how they would work with your team. That makes sense, as Novak teaches this in corporate settings. But the story and the pain is so personal, that I was getting the most value when he was talking about how YOU need to do something to get through YOUR crisis. Others might see it exactly the opposite, and that's good. It's rare that an author can write something that speaks to two often separate parts of a person's life, and effectively delivers a message to both.

Again... it's a small volume (93 pages) that returns far more value than the time and dollars spent reading it. This is a book that instead of loaning to a friend, I'd just buy them their own copy. Otherwise, you may never see it again.

Christopher Novak writes an inspirational account about overcoming the loss of his wife and unborn son through six strategies: Affirmation, Expectation, Communication, Locomotion, Collaboration, and Celebration. Moreover, Mr. Novak neatly applies these strategies to the challenges faced in the workplace, and he provides an activity to reinforce the steps of each strategy. Conquering Adversity is about self-discovery, and its message is appropriate for teens to adults, individuals to team leaders. I have read this book several times since I heard Mr. Novak deliver a keynote address last month, and hearing his message was truly moving.

Christopher Novak's six strategies for conquering adversity, along with his personal reflections that support them, were moving in a way that I never expected. His own story was poignant, the implications on me personally were powerful, and the application of all of it in the business world - or any team environment - is unbelievably compelling. Most books dealing with adversity in the workplace focus on the leader; this book was particularly relevant for me because it focuses on the individual, irrespective of title, and his or her own journey through tough times. I will undoubtedly read this book several more times, and will re-live the experience as I share the book with others. Thank you, Christopher Novak, for the inspiration you provided.

Chris Novak's account of the immense loss in his life and how he powerfully used that tragedy to move forward is a message for everyone. He teaches life skills for any age or any background to empower the reader to prepare for eventual loss or tragedy, but not allow the possibility to be debilitating. I have read and re-read this book and given it as a gift often and never been disappointed. Chris' warmth and humor and straight forward message make this book a must read for all ages.

Chris Novak's personal life experience story is a heart-tugging peek into his own family tragedy. What makes this book GREAT is that Novak doesn't stop there. He uses his life experience--and the difficult lessons used--to outline a relevant plan for conquering the obstacles of life we all face, whether in the workplace or in our homes. While it is true that our own individual hurdles may not mirror Novak's, his perceptive insights into our humanness and resiliance offer a clear strategy for moving beyond the overwhelming mountains of life and onto flat, solid footing. Don't miss this life-changing read!

Real world Look on Battling Insurgents

I picked up this book after reading the book "Fiasco", a book critical of the U.S. actions in Iraq, after the author noted that officers in the U.S. Military are currently using this book as a learning tool text book. Gaulle was a French veteran of WWII, Indonesia and served as a UN observer in Greece during an insurgent attempt to remove the government. He makes it very clear that the counterinsurgent (the government) in charge must win the battle for the population and that the soldier has a much more complex multi-dimensional role in creating trust within the population, creating security while not being too autocratic. He also states that successful adaptive leaders should be granted more local control on the ground allowing greater interaction. The author uses examples of insurgents from Algeria, Greece, and China along with an emerging U.S. Vietnam war that is evolving by the time the book was completed in late 1863. Gaulle notes that geography is a great aid to insurgents along with sympathetic borders. He also notes the classic insurgent method of intimidation; kill local politicians and police to make a greater impact on the masses, something well reflected in Iraq. On the other hand, he demonstrates how the Chinese Nationals treated their prisoners well, obtaining potential recruits, and how the nationals, upon gaining a territory would have a support administration prepared to go right in and set up. The Chinese nationals' organization abilities virtually provide a blue print for the counterinsurgents to follow. Although the text is 40 years old, written during the ruptures of colonial control of third world countries, it still is applicable today in the Middle East and elsewhere as a similar if not more sophisticated warfare is fought by insurgents, particularly those well supported, hence the major problem. The book is written in brief text book style and is a read most appreciated by those with a military background. Those without military experience or a technical appreciation may find it a not very colorful read. The book is very direct in its brevity with just 99 pages but a very insightful book in that short space. I purchased the paperback new for $28.

David Galula's Counterinsurgency Warfare: Theory & Practice is a classic. It is a classic in the sense that it is ... a work of enduring excellence ...an authoritative source [Webster's Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary]. I recommend this volume because it makes better sense of other books on intelligence and special operations, by serving as a metric for both policy and operational analysis.

Written almost as a `good news/bad news' aphorism, Galula concedes ..."Very little is offered beyond formulas - which are sound as far as they go - such as, `Intelligence is the key to the problem,' or `The support of the population must be won." P xii.

The essence of the text is clearly stated ..."to define the laws of counterrevolutionary warfare, to deduce from them its principles, and to outline the corresponding strategy and tactics." P xiii.

Galula begins by defining insurgency as ..."a protracted struggle conducted methodically, step by step, in order to attain specific intermediate objectives leading finally to the overthrow of the existing order ...it can no more be predicted than a revolution; its beginnings are so vague that to determine exactly when an insurgency starts is a difficult legal, political, and historical problem." P 5.

Vital decisions depend on the quality of the intelligence available to policy makers. Additionally, and possibly more importantly, intelligence must be evaluated and presented in terms of a practical application. Galula delivers on his promise, as Counterinsurgency Warfare systematically examines the theoretical i.e., strategic aspect of intelligence in terms of practical/tactical i.e., operational applications.

Counterinsurgency Warfare: Theory and Practice is perhaps the best textbook on how to fight a guerilla war (to read about how to conduct a guerilla war read Mao Zedong's On Guerilla War or Alberto Bayo's 150 Questions for a Guerilla). David Galua wrote this book. He was a French military officer whose experience in Algeria (during its war of independence from 1954 to 1962) has shaped his views on how to fight an insurgency. As a result, he has written a book that is credible, effective, and given today's current events, very relevant.
This book serves as an effective teaching tool for anyone interested in understanding how guerilla war (including terrorism) can be subdued. It short, well written, and presented in a format that is easy for anyone to understand. This contrasts greatly with current military literature of today (including the upcoming US Army's FM 3-24, Counterinsurgency Operations which is, in my view, too big for a busy officer to read in a single day).
This book, along with Roger Trinquier's, Modern Warfare, should be included as part of every military officer's recommended reading list. Not only is this book thought provoking (i.e. in providing strategies in fighting insurgents), it is also relevant to our current struggle against international terrorism. This book should be treated as an important weapon in any warrior's arsenal.

This book helped me to realized that eventhough I didn't have a earthly father in the household that my Father in Heaven will teach me and validate me as a father should have done for me. It help me to realize that I shouldn't be upset about my earthly father not being there and that God has provided all I need here on earth.

As always T.D. Jakes delivers a powerful and blessed message. In "Daddy Loves His Girls", he speaks to the mind, heart, soul and spirit of women from all walks of life. If you are a woman or father of a daughter...THIS BOOK IS A MUST READ! As you read each page, you will grow a little more. By the end of this book you have a perscription for WHOLENESS in life.

T.D. Jakes also provides examples from his own family life, which gives the reader an up close and personal feeling. Some readers need those applicable real life situations in order to interpret the message to the fullest. For those who could do without the life's application...he has also provided Bible Scripture Quotations. I highly recommend this spiritual food...it will be a blessing.
