An extremely motivating bookReview Date: 2008-06-17
I have joined weight watchers probably 20 times with little or no success. The
instructor always told me that I didn't eat enough. I guess hearing it from you
helped. I workout M-F for 2 hours/day, but I only had one big meal around 3 and
a couple protein bars the rest of the day. I also can't lift weights (which I
love to do) because of a torn rotater cuff. So, I gave up on it all. Sunday I
read your book. Monday I went to the gym, bought a body fat scale, and ate 5
small meals/snacks. It was great! I also drank my water which I normally don't
drink any water!! Thank you!
I do have a couple of questions. I apologize if I missed it in the book, but is
there a total daily consumption of protein, fat, and carbs that you should have?
I think I remember fat should be around 27, right? My other question is milk,
how does it fit in? I know I am geting calcium with cottage cheese, string
cheese and yogurt, but I would also like to have a glass of milk. I do take a
calcium supplement also. Well, thank you again for writing the book. I hope I
can be like one of your success stories in the book.
Forever Fit - 2 insights a desk jockey gained Review Date: 2007-06-15
These two insights I learned above are analagous to the insight I had when I finally heard a ski instructor, after not listening for many years. In order to ski you have to do what is counter intuitive - you have to lean down the hill. In order to become fit, you have to do what is counter intuitive - you have to eat more often and you have to train more easily. Buy the book and go to Dr. Rick's website.

More Than History!Review Date: 2004-05-28
In spite of its grim tale, this book is a GREAT read, especially his triumphant description of the liberation of his home town of Dijon. My cynical and "hip" generation no longer ascribes great heroism to the Allied side of World War II, focusing instead on the self-interested motives of many of those nations. But DeAnfrasio shows what it meant to him, his family and his fellow Dijonnais to have the Americans and Free French forces march into their city after four years of Nazi tyranny. That moment is so powerful, after having vicariouosly experienced his suffering beforehand, that I almost started shouting for joy on the beach!
This book is a timely reminder that "tyranny" and "liberty" are not merely empty phrases used by venal politicians only interested in furthering their own careers. DeAnfrasio shows their real meaning by emphasizing what extraordinary courage it took to live an ordinary life during the darkest days of WWII. We Americans need to be reminded of this every once in awhile, since we haven't experienced occupation since the War of 1812.
I recommend this book HIGHLY!!

An Important Book for Parents of Patients TooReview Date: 2006-05-04
No doctor, except perhaps in well-prepared, hour-long consults that simply don't exist, can provide the kind of information these books can.
If you are a patient, trying to understand the exact nature of your problem, or the parent of a young patient, trying to give help, these are the books to have.

As in "Amalgam Illness", the author respects the intelligence of his readers while recognizing that they don't necessarily have medical degrees. Cutler provides many sample hair tests to illustrate his "counting rules". Individuals who have decided to take charge of their own health and the health of their families owe it to themselves to add this excellent book to their home library.

A valuable tool for mercury toxicityReview Date: 2006-05-01
A most helpful bright light upon this can be found in the two books by Dr. Andy Cutler, Amalgam Illness and the more recent Hair Test Interpretation: Finding Hidden Toxicities.
I had a copy of Hair Test Interpretation with me at a recent medical conference and showed it to several clinicians who deal with mercury toxicity. Each person, after perusing the book, was genuinely excited to finally find a way of dealing with the subtleties and complexities of interpreting hair tests in their practices.
I believe that both parents of metal-injured children and physicians will find Dr. Cutler's newest contribution a most valuable tool.

The work of a prodigy; a must read for those with chronic ailmentsReview Date: 2006-06-10
Cutler's first book, Amalgam Illness is about how to treat mercury intoxications. Most doctors do not acknowledge the existence of dental amalgam caused mercury intoxications, but if you familiarize yourself with the works of other dentists on mercury intoxications, there is a compelling case that these fillings have catastrophic effects in some people, while most tolerate them just fine. Mercury intoxications are bizarre in that they have many, far more than 20, completely different sets of symptoms. In his first book, Cutler suggests that you diagnose a mercury intoxication with a check list of symptoms. This may work, but may not feel right, as you are diagnosing an "unacknowledged" illness by seemingly unrelated symptoms which can fit many different illnesses. Hair Test Interpretation is the answer to this worry. As Cutler became more experienced, he found a much simpler and more easily understandable way to diagnose mercury intoxications.
Doctor's Data, the largest provider of hair tests in the US, reports that in most people you can determine how many amalgam fillings a person has by their hair mercury content. Several doctors told me that they have seen people have extremely low hair mercury levels in their hair, levels vastly lower than expected in light of their amalgam exposure, whose hair mercury content skyrocketed into the 96th and higher percentiles after they were treated for mercury toxicity, that is after mercury was removed. Their explanation was that toxic concentrations of mercury can somehow jam the body's ability to excrete mercury in the hair. Cutler reports the same phenomenon, and has compiled a list of 5 sets of anomalies that he saw when hair mercury excretion was "jammed." If you believe Andrew Cutler, as I do, this book provides you with a 2 minute test that allows you to determine whether chronic, irreversible illnesses which most doctors insist will be life-long ailments are actually misdiagnosed mercury intoxications.
Perhaps more importantly, this book includes many case stories of people who overcame harrowing woes with Cutler's therapy, with "before" and "after" hair tests. Today, when many doctors sneer when you talk of amalgam illness, these case stories are invaluable, as they provide you indisputable evidence that Cutler is right, and the scripture of the gods in white coats is, in regards to mercury intoxication, as useless as compendia of voodoo chants.
A small quibble: This book would have been even better had Cutler included references in the scientific literature pertaining to how hair absorbs metals. All the same, this is the work of a genius. It has taken more than a year, and much ancillary research, to conclude that Dr. Cutler is correct in at least many of his assertions. Allow me to note that the Nobel Prize has been awarded for lesser accomplishments.

A Sympathetic and Educating Examination.Review Date: 2004-07-01
The book is filled with anecdotes, observations, and songs arising from the era. (I very much appreciated the introduction which details the election of 1860 and started the whole terrible tragedy that ensued over the next half decade.) The generous amount of illustration truly helps evoke the period. "Hardtack and Coffee" is a perfect companion to Bell Irvin Wiley's "Life of Billy Yank: The Common Soldier of the Union" and "The Life of Johnny Reb: The Common Soldier of the Confederacy". And it is a perfect part of anyone's Civil War/American History library.

Charles W. Reed, the illustrator, was ALSO a Civil War veteran.
He served in the Ninth Massachusetts Battery and won the Medal of Honor at Gettysburg for saving his commanding officer, Captain
John Bigelow, who had been seriously wounded in the fight at the
Trostle Farm on 2 July 1863.
My favorite chapter was the one on the army mule.

The pictures are wonderful. The few repetitive words there are encourage my child to 'read' the book. He also loves finding the duck on every page.
I wish I could find more books like this one- simple, gorgeous pictures, a nice story with a happy ending, a lot of opportunity for other activities while you read. We find the missing duck, count the ducklings, look at the pretty colors, look for other animals and more.

with a grounded, helped feeling...hopeful, too. I'm not crazy about the word "empowering," but this book is empowering, I think. If you're looking for help in this area, this book is worth reading. (I know Bill Blass used to say in those magazine perfume ads that he didn't like people (women) who thought they could be helped by self-help books--remember?--but I don't care! This is a truly good one!) If you are in pain and you suspect past emotional abuse might be a factor contributing to it, please check this book out. You might even be moved to pass it on to friends--I am already plotting to purchase additional copies!

A good basic resourceReview Date: 2007-04-10
However, there are reasons why children with selective mutism are sometimes "misdiagnosed" with autism spectrum disorder. Frequently, in my experience, the two overlap, especially in children with High-Functioning Autism and Asperger's Syndrome. I also say this from experience: I am diagnosed Asperger's as an adult, but could not speak fluently until I was 8 due to word-finding difficulties associated with autism. There was no diagnosis of high-functioning autism when I was a child, so they called me "elective mutism with autistic features". (Selective mutism used to be called elective mutism.) I had a great deal of anxiety in situations where I was expected to speak to others for years afterward, and frequently would not speak with anyone other than my parents and teachers.
I must say, though, that the authors did not include the techniques I have found that work best with children with either or both selective mutism and high-functioning autism disorders, including asperger's, who have anxiety about speaking.
Some respond very well to the use of masks. I try to have it be a mask that the child has made, with my assistance, and gradually modify the mask to look more like the child, or modify the base material from paper to nylon around a base.
Another good therapy tool is a sock puppet. Gradually make it look more like the child, such as by adding hair, eyes the same color as the childs', etc. Gradually try to fade the use of these as the child's anxiety decreases.
Best of luck.
