20 years young...

These adventures all stand the test of time, still being funny and terrifying after all these years.

The other reviewer did a bang up job of detailing the contents. The Amazon review is wrong, however. HIL Sector Blues actually appears in Extreme Paranoia, and is only casually mentioned in the introduction of Paranoia Flashbacks.

The price here on Amazon is well worth the many adventures contained herein, chosen for fun value rather than any other reason. These are the best adventures of the previous editions, upgraded to Paranoia XP.

If adventures are what you need, I'd definately get Flashbacks before any other book in the XP line.

Good compilation of classic Paranoia Adventures

Review Date: 2005-08-02
Paranoia XP: Flashbacks is compilation of eight classic Paranoia adventures, slightly updated for Paranoia XP. In addition of these classic adventures, book also contains three `Code 7' mini-missions from Acute Paranoia box set and new (and quite dull) orientation mission for freshly shanghaied Troubleshooters. For those who are wondering could they use this book with their Paranoia 2nd edition, answer is simple 'yes'. Though you need to convert characters for 2nd edition rules all by yourself, most other conversions in this book are minor and the adventures are very close to their original counterparts. Most of the original artwork is also there, but in case of some of later released adventures, some of the original artwork has been replaced with new one.

FULL CONTENTS:
* Alpha Complexities
* Das Bot
* Me and My Shadow Mark 4
* Robot Imana 665-C
* Send in the Clones
* Trouble With Cockroaches, the
* Yellow Clearance Black Box Blues, the
* Vapors Don't Shoot Back
* Three 'Code 7' mini-missions
* Pre-Paranoia orientation mission

But should you buy it? It depends. If you are seeking good compilation of older Paranoia material, book is goldmine. If you are searching something for one-shots, book is also very good choice though some of the longer adventures can take even three gaming sessions to complete. But if you don't really care for pre-made adventures, there is probably nothing here that would interest you, though most book's adventures have terrific ideas for killing Troubleshooters.

Highlights from a Long Career

Mortimer Adler may be our greatest living philosopher. Born in 1903, Adler worked his way from humble origins to academic achievements reached by few. He quit school in his teens and became a copy boy on a New York newspaper. He would later find his way into the Ivy League, attending Columbia University where we studied and later taught. He quickly championed the liberal arts education. He believes that students who have a well-balanced education become more productive private citizens.

His endorsement of the classical studies led to his teaching the of Great Books of the Western World, which he thought was the best avenue to a well-rounded education. If you own a set of Encyclopedia Britannica's Great Books of the Western World, you'll see Adler's name as associate editor. He wrote both volumes of the Great Ideas syntopicon that begin the series.

This book centers on the professional, rather than the personal, more so than the average autobiography. It's quite philosophical. Adler makes you think about different propositions as he reveals his discovery of certain knowledge. He's quick to point out his mistakes of youth, and he shares many stories of how his own lack of tact alienated him from his colleagues and other important people. He's mellowed much with age and has become more and more respected within his field. It's a very honest recap of a long and productive life. I would recommend it to anyone with an interest in philosophy, the great books, or liberal arts education.

This pocket guide contains photos and descriptions of virtually all of the endemic birds of the West Indies. It also covers introduced species and water birds of the Caribbean. It is an exceptionally usuable pocket guide for the birder to take along on a cruise or holiday to the islands.

Great book -- all my friends want one.

I bought this book to check out local birds in the US Virgin Islands, as well as several similar books that were recommended to me. Not only do I really love it but, during a recent hurricane when our house was filled with folks, our guests raved about the quality of the book, great pictures, etc. And this was after they got a chance to compare it to other books on the same subject. Of all the Virgin Islands birding and wildlife books we have, this is the one our guests all want. It is easy to use, the pictures are accurate, and I recommend it.

Straightforward Enjoyable Italian Legal Thriller
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-11-19
This Italian bestseller is the third in Carofiglio's series of crime/legal thrillers featuring lawyer Guido Guerrieri. The simple story is set in the somewhat grim eastern port of Bari (yes, I've been there and don't care to return), where the 40ish private attorney plies his trade while fending off a midlife crisis. One day, not long after being dumped by his girlfriend, he is retained by a convicted drug smuggler to represent him in his appeal case. Coming back from a vacation in Montenegro, the man's car was searched, and 40 kilos of cocaine was found, leading to a sixteen year sentence. However, he claims to have confessed only in order to keep his half-Japanese wife out of jail, and disavows any prior knowledge of the drugs.

The story then unfolds relatively straightforwardly, as Guerrieri examines the details of the original case and does a little digging with the unofficial help of a few old acquaintances. As in many European crime novels, the hero/protagonist is somewhat of a loner, and spends a good portion of the book drifting around the streets of the city (by bike!) ruminating on his empty life, eating, and drinking. Adding to Guerrieri's woes is his self-loathing when he falls all too easily into bed with his client's exotically beautiful wife. A further complication is the lawyer's secret past with his client -- as a teen, the client was a fascist thug who was part of a gang who assaulted Guerrieri, an event the client doesn't appear to recall. These latter two elements don't add a great deal to the story, especially the teenage connection, which leads nowhere and ultimately serves little purpose. Yet despite the relatively unoriginal plotline, there's a certain tone to the story that makes it quite compelling. Definitely not a great book, but good enough to make me want to go back and read Guerrieri's earlier cases (Involuntary Witness, A Walk in the Dark).

Strong Italian legal thriller

In Bari, Italy, convicted drug smuggler Fabio Paolicelli asks Guido Guerrieri to represent him on his appeal of a sixteen year sentencing. Guido looks at the trial in which Fabio's confession makes his guilt obvious. However, Fabio insists he was set up and that he admitted doing the crime to insure his wife Natsu Kawabata would not be on trial too. He also insists his lawyer Corrado Macrì worked for the opposition and not providing him with a good defense.

Guerrieri hesitates as he feels the appeal will fail because Fabio confessed, the man's past as a Fascist punk offers no redeeming quality to build from, and there is no lucid motive to forge a conspiracy to lock him away. However, upon meeting the exotic half-Japanese Natsu, Guido agrees to represent Fabio. As he constructs the defense, Guido cannot resist Natsu's lure even though he knows this is a morally wrong conflict of interest; they make love. If Fabio ever finds out and is freed from prison it could prove dangerous to his lawyer, who begins to wonder if he should throw the case too.

The legal thriller aspects are fascinating and cleverly devised, but that takes a back seat to the deep look at the ethics of the middle age attorney Guido. Readers will appreciate his realizations and rationalizations as he ponders between the best and worst defenses. Few sub-genre tales contain a better protagonist as he makes the tale worth reading with his fresh somewhat cynical spin (see INVOLUNTARY WITNESS).

Excellent Synopsis of the Major Doctrines in the Epistle

This book has been passed down in our family; it has been read so much, that I have had to purchase it again! The book is less a commentary than it is a compilation or synopsis of the doctrines contained in Paul's letter. In this book, as well as The Epistle to the Romans, the reader will come face to face with some of the most sobering and comforting doctrines taught in Scripture. A must have for any Bible student.

An excellent tool for the Bible student or teacher

Not exactly a commentary, but much more than just an outline. I have found this book to be an excellent resource to learn the structure and meaning of Paul's letter to Rome. The authors included many useful and extensive notes, charts, and appendixes related to major doctrines in the letter. Appendix D contrasts the teachings of Calvinism and Arminianism and was published as a separate work by the same publishing company. The book has a Preface written by Gordon H. Clark.

Awesome book - a journey of the heart

Guys, don't be put off by the title - this is a book as much for guys as for girls.

This is one of the most incredible books you are ever likely to read. Great reading, and for what is a deep subject it's a remarkably easy read too. It's sprinkled with honest and helpful anecdotes from the lives of the authors which help illustrate the points and make it personal and human, as well as divine and spiritual. The Sacred Romance encourages you to recapture your heart, your soul, your imagination, your vision. It spurs you on to see yourself as part of something bigger. Deep inside each of us at some point is a yearning to be something, a vision that we are made for something bigger, a dream that we have significance, and that there is something more. However, the burdens and 'arrows' of life oppress and stomp all over these visions and desires, and as a result we settle for less, for 'less wild lovers' for addictions, for drivenness and distractions, but we even find that what we settle for does not satisfy. This book reaches into the deepest part of us and affirms that our hopes and dreams point onwards to the greater reality - the God who loves us, who pursues us. The desire deep within us will never be fulfilled by taking the easy road, or by simple pleasures - sure, we might sojourn for a while but ultimately the simple pleasures (or 'vanity fair') never satisfy, so we either need to journey on, or these things slowly kill the heart - if that sounds dramatic just look around and see what 'anaesthetics' people use in their lives and what it does to them. Instead fulfilment is from pursuing the God who pursues us, and that might well be across a desert of self-questioning and putting aside the simple pleasures, but it's what we were made for, and only by pursuing the true source of our hopes, desires and dreams will we find the fulfilment, the meaning that we earnestly seek. In doing so, we find that God is a wild lover of each of us, that He is passionate about each of us. This book is about a journey of the heart... into the heart of God.

If you haven't guessed by now, The Sacred Romance really touched me. I love its passion and honesty and it speaks deeply into my own experience. It is profound, transformational and affirms the deep desires and hopes within us - follow them, don't stamp on them, follow them through the wild roads and across the deserts - into the arms of God. Guys this book is as much for you as for the girls - it speaks into the adventure each of us seeks in our hearts, it affirms what's in each of our masculine souls, and encourages us onward in our journey. I heartily recommend it.

I thought this book was a very good description of how hard it was to get an education in the South if you were black. They way the way the white children treated the black kids makes me wonder if any education went on. Still, the education was better than what blacks kids received in the black schools so the kids in the family persisted in attending the white schools. The result was a family who went on to university and college. This book tells a pretty full picture of the distress and cruelty of the times. What it could have done a little better is describe how much better the education in the white schools were and how the children were able to receive a better education there. The book does mention how the mother left school in 8th grade but felt she was only about 3rd grade level. That needed to be included in the story and not just the afterword.

THE SCHOOL IS NOT WHITE! is a work of historical fiction that is set in Drew, Mississippi in 1965. In the story, young readers are introduced to Matthew and Mae Bertha Carter, sharecroppers and parents who only want the best for their children. The Carter's believed that in order for their children to have success in life they needed the best possible education. Because of this, they decided to go against local convention and send their children to "all white schools." This choice did not go unpunished, the children were ostracized by both classmates and teachers, and the family was forced to move when the owner of the land would no longer allow them to sharecrop. However, as a result of the faith and perseverance of the family and assistance from local and national groups who supported their cause, things began to change. The book concludes with an author's note and a brief history of the Carter family, which lets readers know what happened in the real lives of the people who inspired the book.

Doreen Rappaport has written a story that teaches children that even ordinary people can stand up and make a real difference in their community. Further, the story highlights the importance of faith, strength in times of adversity, and courage. Curtis James does a wonderful job illustrating the book. Through his artistry, readers can see the story unfold and see the emotions the characters feel through the expressions depicted in the richly detailed pictures. THE SCHOOL IS NOT WHITE! is a great introduction to the Civil Rights Movement, and particularly the important role children played in it.

"Sixty-Six Things God Wants You To Know For The 21st Century" is an inspirational book that will help you grow as a Christian. It's a different type of inspirational book because it's interactive as Henry Curtis Jr. has brilliantly created his own brand of inspirational literature. This book has a unique layout. Each of the sixty-six books of the Bible is represented by its own chapter. Each chapter begins with a verse that the author, Henry Curtis Jr., selects from that particular book of the Bible. Then the author elaborates on the significance of that verse as it pertains to our modern day way of life. The best part is that the following page is where the reader gets to finish writing the book. You choose your favorite verse from each book of the Bible and write about what it means to you. There are no rules to using this book; You use it as the spirit leads you. Another great thing about this book is that you can even use it in conjunction with other forms of Bible study. Personally, I read a study Bible every day and follow a calendar that outlines how to read the entire Bible in a year. Every time I finish reading a book of the Bible, I reflect on what I've read and choose favorite verses to write about in "Sixty-Six Things God Wants You To Know For the 21st Century." My study Bible and this book work great together. I recommend "Sixty-Six Things God Wants You To Know For The 21st Century" to anyone who is willing to be pro-active about their relationship with God. This book will challenge you to seek meaning from God's word and to become a better Christian. Using this book is a great way to grow as a Christian while discovering the relevance of God's word in our everyday lives.

Mr. Curtis has hit the nail on the head with his approach to devotionals and commentary. A unique combination. As you study through this devotional you will effortlessly write your own commentaries on where you are in life in respect to God's Word and His plan for your life. My only regret is that there only were "..sixty-six things.." and I look forward to his next creative offering. This book is a useful resource for those who are examining their faith. We are using it as a stimulant for some of the high school students in our youth group who are ready to go beyond the superficial.
