I am neither a military buff nor a historian, but when I picked this book up, I read it cover to cover! The War of the Two Emperors is everything you wanted to know and more about the War between Napoleon and Tsar Alexander of Russia. It is a dramatic account of all the battles, planning, letters, etc that made up a truly epic war. This book also provides a great insight into the mind of these two great emperors, as well as a look at the culture of this time. What amazed me was how enticing this book was, and how the author could make something so boring (to me) absolutely fascinating! I could care less about which calvary unit was sent to gaurd the left flank, and yet it seemed fascinating in this context! I found myself cheering on my favorite commanders and thinking how I would have "done it" in the same situation. What a great read!

Copyrighted in 1995. This book is an excellant history of the men from Chouteau Co., Montana who did military service during WWII.
For most entries there is a picture of the service man, and what branch, rank, and service he did during WWII. Also most entries have a small bit of family info. This is an excellant history of that time period & of genealogy value for Chouteau Co., Montana.

British foreign policy is a story of crimes against humanity
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2007-08-21
Mark Curtis exposes British interventions abroad as part of an empirical project, not pursued independently anymore, but actually as a junior partner of the US in the latter's search for full spectrum dominance. This project is sold to the public as being a mission of `good soldiers'.

The fundamental aim of the US and British foreign policies is to benefit a transnational elite (an `overclass') by crushing independent forces outside the elite's control, by keeping crucial economic resources (oil, commodities) in correct hands and by helping disseminate a self-serving economic Gospel (free markets).
These ends justify all means: illegal wars (`people's lives are valueless when they get in the way of elitist interests'), arms sales (`the business of death'), trampling human rights, overthrow democratically elected governments, undermining independent national movements (calling them communist) or supporting dictatorial or fundamentalist regimes. Real democracy is seen as a threat by those elites.
These policies are also pursued via international institutions (WTO) and through monopolistic media, who lie overtly or by omission and are acting as Pravda-like state propaganda (Chalmers Johnson).
The ultimate result is a more unequal, more insecure world and a still lover living standard for the majority of the world population.
The author illustrates his arguments profusely. A few examples: Iraq (oil and control of the Middle East), Afghanistan (oil, military bases), South-Africa and Rhodesia (racism), Malaya (rubber), Kenya (land), Diego Garcia (military bases), British Guyana (sugar, bauxite), Indonesia (oil, nationalism).

But what to do? Promote political and economical democratization, a truly Herculean task.

This book is a must read for all those wanting to understand the Kafkaesk official and media environment we live in.

It helped me during my pregnancy
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.

My sister-in-law gave me this set when I got pregnant and it really helped me to understand what was going on in my belly step by step. I can't say that everything was covered, but it touches most of the subjects, we, moms-to-be, are concerned during gestation. Sickness, nutrition, exercises, baby development and possible illness genetic, non-genetic), what will happen during delivery, kinds of delivery we may face, options we may choose from, all was told. I rated 5 stars because there are so much information to be covered that a book of 500+ pages wouldn't be enough, but this book pretty much covered almost everything we need to know. I always read the book first and was able to ask specific questions to my doctor in my pre-natal exams. I am now using the second book " Your baby's First Year week by week" and I'm glad to have it in hand to help me take care of my 10 month-old baby.

For any man at that midlife mark...
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-29
I read When a Man Turns Forty by Curtis Pesmen a little after my fortieth birthday last year. As I approach my forty-first birthday, I just might read it again.

Over all, Pesmen gives some very practical advice and addresses many subjects that all of us at this age start thinking about.

Chapter topics include a general look at turning forty, a chapter on women and what forty means to them, marriage issues, body issues such as changes in hair, skin, eyes, etc., fitness and food, sex issues including sexual health, family matters, financial matters and security, and then a view from turning fifty.

Some of us want to ignore the aging process. Unfortunately, time keeps marching on, and no matter how hard we try, we age. And with age, certain things need to be addressed. This book does exactly that.

Personally, I didn't want to turn forty, and I'm not eager for my next birthdays. As a martial artist and someone who has always been extremely active, I find it takes a little longer to heal these days and I have aches and pains that I don't remember having 20 years ago. I also feel the pressures of my job, pressures of family life, and the little voices that sometimes say "what if?" This book was enlightening to read and see how others handled the same issues and the stories of midlife pauses rather than what the author calls the overused midlife crisis gave me things to think about as I face the same things or prepare to face them.

We can't stop aging, so we might as well enjoy the journey. This book has some practical wisdom to help you do just that. I recommend this book to anyone who has hit that midlife mark and is wondering just what it is all about.

When your world comes apart, what do you do?
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2002-01-31
After 9/11 occured, many people have felt uneasy and insecure. This well-written book deals with discouragement; being overloaded and overwhelmed; hating your job; absence of love for your spouse; problems with raising children; excessive worry and anxiety; getting over your head in debt, as well as other personal and family problems. It does not read like a novel, but requires some thought as you read the personal illustrations and Bible solutions. It would be excellent for individual or group study, for non Christians as well as Christians. Highly recommended.
