Offers short, beautiful insights and touching interpretations of the Psalm. This writing was divinely inspired. I was inspired and calmed. I do not belong to Dr. Curtis's church, but this was superb.

The Masked Rider stood ready to ride the justice trail once more...

_Not too many people remember the Masked Rider these days. Yet, at one time he was as famous as the Lone Ranger or Zorro (seemingly combining elements of each.) Wearing a black mask, Stetson, and cape; he wielded twin colt .45's; rode the great black charger Midnight; and travelled with his faithful Yaqui companion, Blue Hawk. Known as "the Robin Hood Outlaw" he road the justice trail to aid the downtrodden and oppressed of the the wild frontier.
_This particular story has our heroes in the Nevada basin and range country helping honest ranchers to defend themselves from a ruthless railroad who would frame them for crimes that they did not commit in order to seize their land.
_The Masked Rider pulps stretched from the 30's into the '50's. A variety of writers penned the stories at one time or another. In this case it was Walker A. Tompkins, a western veteran who did everything from Gunsmoke novelizations, to Roy Rogers, to the Rio Kid. In the late 60's Curtis Publishing (The Saturday Evening Post) revived the Rider in 26 paperback reprints of the original pulp stories. This book was #26.

This book provides an important look at the Black Panther Party in all of its complexities. Although the main focus is on violence in the creation and deterioration of the BPP, the book has a wealth of historical information about the time period as a whole. As someone who has only a limited education on the Black Panther Party and the Black Power movement, I found this book to be a major contribution to my knowledge base, understanding and awareness. Austin gives insight into the climate of the nation prior to the founding of the party, so it was easy for me to see why the Black Panther Party was initially needed in the local community and why it later gained national popularity. As the book unfolded, it also became easy to see why the party had failures in some areas...
This book has truly been invaluable in my understanding of not just black history, but also of American history. I would not only recommend this book to those who wanted to increase their historical knowledge---I would recommend the book to anybody who is looking for an engaging read. This book is an absolute page-turner! It is filled with story after story detailing the rise and fall of the BPP, which includes anything from day-to-day life as a Panther and armed defense against police attacks to the COINTELPRO operation and government infiltration. Although I started the book slowly because of my busy schedule, I became increasingly engrossed as it went on---the more I read of the book, the less I wanted to put it down!

The Place We Live: Ecology in the Upper Midwest

When it comes to describing the plants of a locale with all its ecological intricacies, it could be said that John Curtis did it first and best. The only way he could have done it better was to expand beyond Wisconsin's boundaries and write "The Ecology and Ecosystems of the Midwest." Still, and after 42 years in print, this book remains the definitive source for understanding the relationships among the plants of bogs, forests, prairies, lake dunes, and the other habitats of the Upper Midwest. Inset range maps, photos, lists of plants with their "commonness ratings (my term)" in the different habitats, brief histories of human uses of the habitats, and descriptions of the environment (soils, hydrology, etc.) complete the picture. Growing up in Michigan and working for years in Minnesota and the rest of the Midwest, I can attest that it serves these locales reasonably well, and currently there is nothing better. It would work in Iowa, northern Illinois and Indiana, and southern Ontario as well. As a child of the information age, I admit that the presentation of graphics, charts, etc. is not as sharp as it could be. Recent advances in ecology and statistical computing power unavailable to Curtis make some of his analyses a bit dated. Curtis was also somewhat doctrinaire in his view of plant species distributions across ecological gradients (a Gleasonian individualist, for those who wonder), leading him to ignore the important distinction between prairies on sand versus heavier soils, for example. All in all, this book is an excellent primer for anyone with the desire to become more familiar with the intricate composition and workings of midwestern ecosystems and, along the way, feel just a little more at home here.

Seamlessly blends the twin issues of Woolf's literary achievements and the context of their creation

Literary journalism Anthony Curtis reviewed the volumes of Virginia Woolf's diaries, letters, and essays when they were first published, as well as accounts of her life history and mental illness. Virginia Woolf: Bloomsbury & Beyond is his biographical expose of Woolf that seeks to answer the question, "Of what does Virginia Woolf's greatness consist?" Vintage black-and-white photographs illustrate this distinguished study of her life and literature, which also takes into account the contemporary novels that Woolf's writing was a reaction against, and especially her rebellion against the linear narrative. A fascinating read for scholars and lay readers alike, Virginia Woolf seamlessly blends the twin issues of Woolf's literary achievements and the context of their creation. Highly recommended.

This is perhaps the greatest book authored by my uncle, Victor Hugo Boesen. He worked diligently with Curtis' daughter and other members and friends of the Curtis family to research and to write this book. The photographs are stunning. It is a must read for anyone interested in the history of the American Indian and Curtis' crucial role in recording this history. This book has been translated into French and German. Victor Boesen served as a war correspondent for Liberty Magazine during World War II and was present at the signing of the peace treaty on the USS Missouri. His writings appeared in Life, Look, the Los Angeles Times, and other major periodicals and newspapers.

A Walk in the Dark
Gianrico Carofiglio
Bitter Lemon, Oct 2006, $14.95
ISBN: 1904738176
In Bari, Italy, defense lawyer Avvocato Guido Guerrieri earns a living providing legal council to petty criminals; his business depends on returning customers as most of his clients are repeat offenders. However, for whatever reason deep in his pyche, Guido has a soft spot for the underdog especially abused females so at times he will take on impossible cases.
This is one of those times when Guerrieri turns champion because to his chagrin he is immediately attracted to Sister Claudia, director of Safe House, who asks him to help one of her volunteers now hiding at the shelter. The woman moved in with a wealthy Prince Charming who turned into an abusive beast. He beat her in public twice and in private several times. Because of his connections, the carabineri, the police and a judge deny the woman's plea for protection from his harming her. Two lawyers have said no, but Guerrieri agrees to take on the case of protecting the ex girlfriend Martina Fumai, Sistaer Claudia and the shelter from Ernesto Scaianatico, son of of a criminal appeals court judge. However, Guido will learn the hard way why his peers said no.
This terific legal thriller stars a fascinating protagonist who normally is indifferent and bumbling when it comes to his typical clients; however some cases fire up his inner gut turning him into a capable caring attorney and much more. Guido's two capers (see INVOLUNTARY WITNESS) are legal noirs as he struggles to insure his clients remain safe against powerful adversaries who use money and abuse of power to insure victory over justice.
