Advice a "young" mathematician cannot be without
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2002-08-14
Every graduate program in mathematics should hand every beginning student a copy of this book the moment they enter the program. One month later, they should be given an exam over the material to verify that they read the book. Then, if the student is sensible, they will reread it twelve months before graduation and again right after they accept a tenure-track position. The knowledge that you can obtain from this book is that valuable, and can literally help make your career.
I have been on almost every side of the mathematical fence, having been a full-time college instructor in mathematics for several years, a research programmer at a university and a research scientist at a startup company. I currently own a consulting company and teach mathematics and computers as an adjunct and edit [a journal]. Throughout all of this, I have also maintained a steady stream of professional output of papers and problems. From this perspective, I can say that the information about life in industrial mathematics is absolutely right on. Not for everyone who has spent decades in school, it does present enormous opportunities for challenging work.
If you think that you are following the proper strategy to be granted tenure, then you must read the story "The Tenure Chase Papers" by Dana Mackenzie. Unfortunately, this horror story is not as unusual as it should be. The message is clear, start constructing your tenure application your first day on the job and never assume that college and university officials are above being inept and disingenuous. The advice about building your credentials and cultivating allies is something that you cannot afford to ignore.
The balance of the book deals with how to pursue research while teaching a full load and how to obtain grants. Everyone underestimates the amount of time you really put in teaching a full load and unless you absolutely have no life outside of your work, finding time to conduct research is extremely difficult. The best answer is to simply schedule research time with yourself and consider any failure to keep the commitment on a par with canceling a class.
The bulk of this book was written by young mathematicians with recent experience in entering the job market. Their stories are real and packed with knowledge that no one beginning a mathematical career can afford to ignore. I cannot recommend this book enough to that group.

My Father wrote this Book

Although my father wrote this book and I may be a little partial, I think that everyone should read it. Whether it is stolen or not. (Hince his title) His passion for his beliefs really impresses me, the fact that he would spend hours and hours a day to write a book just so that someone might be interested in reading his thoughts and philosiphies. What would be great is if some of you would buy this book and leave a review. I think what would give my father the greatest amount of joy is finding people that have read his book and agree with his philosiphies. I for one do not believe everything that he does but I do have the utmost respect for his beliefs. Thanx for taking the time to read this. Now go out and get this book, one way or another.

The book was well done and it arrived in excellent condition. However, I returned it because I ordered it accidentially. I meant to order a CD. Since you did not have the CD I did find it at my local Christian store. Thank you anyway.

Great musician, great songbook!

Steven Curtis Chapman is one of my favorite musicians, because of his undying love for God, and his ability to show the love that God has for every one of us through his music & lyrics. This songbook is a beautiful compilation of Steven's greatest hits. Every song is irresistable! It's great for the beginner, or for the more advanced guitar/piano players. It includes chords and lyrics. A must-have for any SCC fan!

This book of my life written page by page
And forming link by link a single chain
From youth through experience into age
Is that by which I rise and live again
Beyond my days into a time unknown
Unto me now as I write here alone

Into my future and out of your past
As I become a present after all
And now you hold me in your hands at last

The only paradise beyond the fall
For sinful mortals and poets like me
Who live but little time and then must die
Is to become a part of destiny
And leave you this to remember me by

I had the pleasure of taking a class with Professor Grimm at the Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland. His knowledge base is incredible, and throughout the semester he never ceased to amaze me with his insights.

If you don't have the opportunity to study with him, the book could be your best bet. He illuminates what "strategy" really means and demonstrates in understandable terms how we can actually execute it--not just talk about it in academic terms.

We all must face and overcome temptation...
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-07-04
Don't make the mistake of thinking that because this book is older that it no longer applies today! Dr. Jones makes some profound points about temptation that we must all consider in our daily Christian walk. For example: Until you have the opportunity to be dishonest, you don't really know if you are honest. The true depth of your devotion to Christ is not revealed until you establish your values and personal priorities. You don't know your real strength until you discover your weakness and how to deal with it. Apathy or indifference is not a justifiable excuse. Therefore, he is constantly encouraging us to look at ourselves against the plumb-line of God's Word.

Digging into the Scriptures, Dr. Jones doesn't just convict us of our short-comings and sins. He also reminds us that to be an honorable follower of Jesus Christ, we must learn "that goodness can be more tempting than evil, courage more noble than cowardice, integrity more desirable than vice, faith more enticing than doubt, and forgiveness more honorable than revenge." Isn't this what crucifying the flesh and putting on the new man is all about??? Isn't that how we produce the fruit of our lives that lasts???

TABLE OF CONTENTS:
1. To Cheat.
2. To Exploit.
3. To Jump to Conclusions.
4. To Escape.
5. To Be Indifferent.
6. To Let "Uncle" Do It.
7. To Be Pessimistic.
8. To Quit.
9. To Be Honorable.
10. To Be Christian.
