Mr. Nelson has produced a well researched and thoughtful, objective look at a topic that has been of great interest to me (Vietnam-era Navy Vet). This book is more of a strategic review of the mission of the PT boat than a retelling of individual events, yet it is still an enjoyable read for the PT buff as well as historian. His analysis of the PT's torpedo attacks in all the theaters of WWII (especially at the Battle of Surigao Strait, P.I.) takes on a subject, untouched in any previous book, with logic and authority. He sheds new light on the oft-told PT 109 story. The author raises the achievement and ability of the PT to assume the non-torpedo role of gunboat (in the South/SWest Pacific) when the Navy had no purpose-designed vessels for "littoral warfare". Lessons from the past have bearing on the future as today's small, flash-point conventional conflicts have proven. "Hunters in the Shadows" is a great add to any PT boat library; it stands up there with "At Close Quarters" and the superb photo-essays of authors Al Ross and Victor Cuhn, to name a few. It is also a tribute to the men who served on and serviced the "wooden wonders." (check out the PT Boat Museum's Website for more about these remarkable vessels)

Anyone interested in avaition or parachuting must read this book.
It inspired me to become a serious skydiving competitor and ultimately become a Navy Frogman .... and later a Navy SEAL.

Fantastic account of that most shameful episode in post-war German history; compellingly readable, with no punches pulled. Mr Cate pays particular attention to the 'human' factor, to the 'ordinary' people whose lives were so tragically affected by the building of The Wall and its aftermath. Even those with no particular interest in politics or history would be gripped by this book. I recommend it wholeheartedly.

The Illustrated Rhododendron: Their Classification Portrayed Through the Artwork of Curtis's Botanical Magazine

With its 120 color illustrations and four line drawings, Pat Halliday (on the staff of the Herbarium at the Royal Botanic Garden, Kew, from 1947 to 1990 and an experienced rhododendron expert horticulturalist) offers a superbly organized and presented contribution to the literature of rhododendrons. A veritable showcase of botanical art, each of the exquisite color engravings are drawn from the pages of "Curtis's Botanical Magazine" or "Kew Magazine". The species is presented within the conceptual framework of Halliday's own personal choice of classification systems and she updates the information that accompanied the original historical plates throughout the Botanical Magazine's 213 years of publication. A personal selection rather than an encyclopedic volume, Halliday's descriptions comprising The Illustrated Rhododendron are nonetheless informative, thorough, experienced, and professional. Highly recommended, essential reading for gardeners and horticulturalists with an interest in the species, Pat Halliday's informative overview of the cultivation requirements for the rhododendron is especially recommended.

This powerful collection proves that less can really be more. These stories, most three pages or shorter, pack a punch. Told in vivid language and precise details, these tales linger in the mind long after you close the book. A great read.

Long ago the Great Mystery caused this land to be....

This mammoth volume (over 570 pages) truly is the Indians' own book. Natalie Curtis served as collector, editor, and arranger. The elegant and eloquent simplicity of the tales give testimony that these are the Native American's own words. Not only that, but since it was first published in 1905, these are the memories of chiefs, elders, and holy men that still remembered the old days and the old ways. Plus, the marvelous illustrations were all done by tribe members (except for the photographs) and really contribute to the overall magic of the whole. The songs are all authentic and are given in both English and the original tribal languages (with pronunciation guides.)

While not a comprehensive reference of all the tribes it does give a good range of peoples from the eastern coast, northern woodlands, plains, southwest, and pacific coast. The tribes included are: Wabanaki, Dakota, Pawnee, Cheyenne, Arapaho, Kiowa, Winnebago, Kwakiutl, Pima, Apache, Mohave-Apache, Yuma, Navaho, Zuni, San Juan, Acoma, Laguna, and Hopi.

This book is a great monument to all the peoples and their respective ways of life. It is proof that the social engineers and bureaucrats did not kill the spirit and culture of the rightful caretakers of this land. As long as such a book exists the way back to the old, centered way of living can be backtracked.

This is a moving book. Even Theodore Roosevelt was moved by the "depth and dignity" of Indian thought.

dated, but one of the best for its time

Obviously, this is a dated book. Nevertheless is very well written, and you still can learn a lot especially from the early days when Linux was still trying to be a *NIX clone, that is before the RedHats and Novells and other commercial successes that steered the new distributions toward Microsoft's ways and paths of doing bussiness- take a simple command, burry it under a nice GUI, and wreak havoc into the old simple ways, shuffling files and paths around so you can boast you ADDED value !

One nice thing about this book is that the Caldera in the title is just an example, a suggestion if you will, most of the stuff worked on any other distro of the time almost with no tweaks or arm wrestling. You'd have a hard time today to do the same, but I believe still this book will teach you "to ask the right questions" when you wrestle with your LAN.

Great LPN Thread Series

Review Date: 2006-01-29
Books that are written by this trend are great for the LPN student. They have excellent study guides that really have you search out the information, and makes it easy to learn and retain information. I am using another med-surg textbook, actually, but, for maternal child nursing, my school used Introduction to Maternal and Pediatric Nursing by Gloria Leifer. Got an A because of the way information was worded and that fantastic study guide. Once I knew that they had a med-surg text, I immediately purchased it, although I only have one semester left. I got an A on my first exam, while most people used the required text and got Bs. Also consider purchasing Basic Pharmacology for Nurses in this thread. That particular one can be for RNs OR LPNs. You'll be ahead of the class, trust me!
