Insightful Picture of the Real Ronald ReaganReview Date: 2007-07-27
During this early period of his political career, there clearly was an extended Reagan family that developed in the campaign and then in Sacramento when many of us made the trip to Sacramento for the Administration. Many of us were inexperienced in the affairs of government, like Reagan, but all toiled together for a cause that most of us felt was noble and necessary for the benefit of our country. The interviews Curtis conducted give a rare insight and view of the early Reagan and how we call came together to advance the cause of a man who became one of the giants of the 20th century.
The recent rash of books about Ronald Reagan tell the story of his successful presidency, but few have but a mention of the early, formative years when he learned to hit his political stride. Not only will this book give you insights on how Reagan developed politically, but you will get a picture of a wonderful man who we all loved and were proud to serve.

SuperStar is the fitting tribute to Jackie Curtis Review Date: 2006-01-31
The format was so nice, to hear from so many people who were close to this incredible person really gave me a better idea of who Jackie was and how she lived. I have had the opportunity, as a transsexual entertainer, to travel the country and meet many transgendered performers. They obviously do not get the press or opportunity they deserve. This book is a fitting tribute to a person who helped shape todays theater and bring attention to gender expression.
Jackie was obviously a genius who in many ways helped to shape the character of what we know Broadway play to be, and from the off off Broadway level. He/she lived the street life and was a very real person, on a real level facing the challenges life on that level brings regardless of the day to day persona she would take on.
The book/CD focuses on commentary from her friends and aqauintences and whether from a gay/trans or straight perspective, Jackie Curtis was the epitome of living life as one's own self and creating from the most sincere inner feelings in the face of great odds. Many exerpts of her plays, notes and writings are included to give the reader a more intimate view of Jackie and the person within the personna, whether that be Jackie, James Dean or some other form of self expression.
Obviously she can be an inspiration to those who strive for individuality and to leave a positive mark through their works regardless of her tragic finality.
I would highly recommend viewing this documentary and reading the book as well for anyone interested in life, humor, love, tragedy and the very real Star that Jackie Curtis was.
A strange way to sell a first-class documentary...Review Date: 2007-03-09
Yes, this is the full, ninety-plus minute release of the DVD available for rent from Netflix and other rental venues. How the choice was made to market the film as a "companion piece" to the book, without (as far as I can tell) releasing it as a stand-alone purchase, I dunno. I hope it will be released separately in the future, since the current marketing format, I'd think, would tend to lessen its circulation to a wider audience.
Not that there's anything wrong with the book: it's a compendium of reminiscences by people who were close to Jackie. Some of the material repeats what's in the film, and some fills in gaps in backstory that 90 minutes can't provide, such as details on the life and death of the remarkable (and remarkably messed-up) Andrea Feldman. Still, a nice chunky paperback book of commentary in a boxed DVD set might have been a better way to sell the package, which is truly a good one. It's just that the DVD overrides the book in its excellence. There's no good reason why the book needed to be published in hardcover; it's really liner notes for the DVD.
And then there's the strange, spooky, *sealed* envelope that the DVD itself comes in. Glued furtively into the back of the book, there's a lengthy disclaimer proclaiming in no uncertain terms that you MUST NOT OPEN THE PACKAGE ("Simply return the sealed package.") if you think that the DVD might in any number of (enumerated) ways ruin your life. Talk about user-friendly!
But the good news is -- once you get over the fear, and open the potentially-deadly "package", you find that after all it's just an ordinary DVD, and a great one, at that. Densely packed with interviews, historical stills, film clips, and even a fair amount of very early videotape, this documentary is a detailed and very loving portrait of one of the most defiant gender-bending artists in the history of gender-bending and the stage itself.
The past several years have seen the release of the Paul Morrisey/Andy Warhol films on DVD, and that's brought these previously hard-to-get-at movies to a new audience. This in turn has increased curiosity about the Warhol scene in the 60's, 70's, and later; and that period is increasingly interesting, as civilization lurches inexorably (or so it seems) toward a dessicated, triple-filtered, don't-drink, don't-smoke cultural puritanism.
What was going on in New York in the 50's, 60's, and 70's transformed the American culture. A whole lot of the sexual freedom that we have today, whether it's embraced or bemoaned by whatever faction, comes from the crazy explosion that was the 60's and 70's. There's no shortage of information on the cultural revolution that happened then, but there's also no end to what can be added to it. This story about Jackie Curtis is no small addition.
As a smart kid escaping the wilds of Connecticut who started hustling the streets in NY at 16, I knew a number of the people in this film peripherally, and for the most part they were the people who informed my perception of what life was all about. There was a communality, and a total lack of hierarchy (but for a few bitchfests) and everyone was welcome; I think, in retrospect, that this was what the hippieness of the 60's led to: a kind of a hybrid of the rejection of popular culture with the co-opting of it. At the time, the most visible manifestation of pre-packaged pop culture that could be harvested was the Hollywood star system of the 30's and 40's. Jackie Curtis was hip to this, but also added a Dada-style twist to it. Warhol became the catalyst, but what 'Superstar in a Housedress' demonstrates is that he couldn't have done the things that he (or rather, Paul Morrisey, working under his aegis) did without girls like Jackie, Candy Darling, or Holly Woodlawn (whom, I have to say, is looking absolutely GREAT in this doc, and QUITE the polished lady.)
This is an absolutely essential documentary for those interested in the period, its quirks, and its consequences. But moreso, it's a great tribute to the unbridled, mad creativity of Jackie Curtis, who should never be forgotten. Hopefully, this DVD (and its companion piece, the book) will help assure that.
Also -- at the time of this writing, the book and DVD are pretty consistently available from housing_works_bookstore @ Amazon at a cheap price. Housing Works supports homeless people affected by HIV/AIDS in New York City, so purchasing from them is a win-win thing. They got my order to me very quickly and in perfect condition, so what could I do? I ordered another one from them right away. Somebody's getting it for Christmas. Don't know who yet. Somebody who will have been REAL good this year!
Seriously, though -- if you're interested in the history of the NY art scene in the period, this is very much worth buying.
We must care for our insane; they are the Columbus' of the mindReview Date: 2008-04-03
There was so much to like about this person and movie. Jackie was a phenomenal character. She/he was iconic in the strongest sense of the word. Total belief in herself and her plan (mad though it was at times) and such charisma that all around her believed in her and themselves as much as she did. She altered paradigms.
This particular subculture fascinates me to no end and it is covered well in this DVD. It's classic David and Goliath except David's gotta push it by wearing a dress. I couldn't respect that in-your-faceness more if I tried. I wish I could better convey what I mean. And it's not a movie about sexual preferences. No agenda is forced on you in any way. It's just completely unique.
The fact that this is a documentary and these things really happened and these people really did exist as they did, simply adds to the magic of this movie. Of course, many of those people are still with us and told their tales within. And most of them are extremely interesting as well. It covers more than just Jackie. The world Jackie became famous in is explored in depth as well.
Just as a comparison, it is like the Grateful Dead shows. Nothing like this will ever happen in this way ever again - nothing this new, different, odd, and perfect just for what it was, and it's tragic if you think you may have wanted to be part of it in some way, witness it, but didn't. And if you did, you're breathing the rare air.

Should be called "Dr. Dan's Super FITNESS Plan"Review Date: 2007-01-29
First, the co-author claims that women can "bulk up" if they use high weights at low reps (pg. 12). Um...no...not unless they are taking testosterone or steroids. I've used high weight and low reps and only have a little muscle tone to show. Certainly no one would call me bulky!
Dr. Dan writes about BMI, body fat, and lean mass (pgs. 35-43). All good stuff and worthy of discussion. Thumbs up. Too many people focus on BMI when body fat percentage is an important part of the equation.
He then spends a great deal of time on weight lifting exercises. Nothing wrong with that, and if you want to get into weight training, the book is worth the price just for that. He believes in a mixture of high reps with low weight and low reps with high weight. When you can do 15 reps at a given weight, that's your start weight. Then add a bit of weight for each additional set.
The exercises have lots of drawings to show how to do them, and some of them can be done at home with minimal equipment. Others require a gym. He spends very little space on aerobic exercise, so this isn't a good book if that is your primary interest.
This book is less about WEIGHT LOSS and more about STRENGTH TRAINING and getting fit, but I don't suppose titling it "Dr. Dan's Super Fitness Plan" would sell as many books. If weight training and fitness are your goal, this is a good book. But for weight loss I feel there are better books. In fact, if you want to lose weight, get this book for the weight training, find another on aerobics, and another on nutrition. While Dr. Dan has a bunch of nutrition information, it's not much different from The Zone diet (Dr. Barry Sears). If you choose to eat as Dr. Dan outlines, you'd be better off with The Zone book, though both plans have way too many carbohydrates for my taste. Carbohydrates aren't necessary for life (fat and protein are) so I try to keep them low. Why make what isn't necessary the basis of a diet? I'd rather eat what my body needs, and what will prevent me from getting diabetes in the future.
My problem with Dr. Dan's nutrition information is he feels a need to take a swipe at low-carb diets.
You know, I have this theory: if you can't tout your diet program without knocking down another to make yourself look better, your diet probably isn't worth my time. I stumbled across this in the chapter on nutrition:
"I get patients and clients on an almost daily basis who have "been on Atkins" for months or years. Frankly, I have yet to see one that was fit and in good condition; they are mostly plump, bloated [um...carbs cause bloating] and out of shape [and this is the fault of the diet...how?]. Many have lost weight with Atkins, gained it back, lost it again, and then gained back even more. This is the inevitable consequence of loss of lean muscle mass and lowered metabolic rate. If you really enjoy eating very low carbohydrates for prolonged periods, you feel healthy, have energy, reach your ideal body weight and stay there, and are lean and fit [he thinks these are impossible], then I have no objection to Atkins or any of the other carbohydrate-restricted plans. However [you knew that was coming didn't you?], it is interesting to note that the finest athletes do not eat that way. Enough said" (pg. 162).
It seems this book was written when Atkins was very popular and Dr. Dan does his best to dissuade people from that approach. I'm knocking off one star from my review just for the section quoted above. It seems it was written at the height of the low-carb craze, but seriously, to ask a low-carber (me!) to review a book that bashes low-carb probably wasn't the best idea!
He goes after low-carb again a little later: "It is impossible to take weight off and keep it off if you are not able to eat your favorite foods." Um...my favorite foods were all refined carbs, not allowed even on your plan, Dr. Dan. What do you suggest I do?
He continues, "You have to have a diet that you can stay on now and forever and enjoy. So avoid those extreme diets that deny you whole categories of food." Oh, gee. Here we go again. Low-carb is NOT no-carb, Dr. Dan. Low-carb allows a wide variety of fruits and vegetables and doesn't deny any "whole category of food," so it is a lifetime plan, for me and many other people. How can I believe anything he says when he doesn't bother to do the slightest bit of research on what low-carb is, yet writes about it authoritatively? What else might he have said that is also wrong?
But he's STILL not done. "Experience has shown that very few people can stay with a dietary approach that denies them the foods they enjoy and are used to." But most overweight people are "used to" foods that made them overweight. So even on your plan they have to give up the foods they are "used to."
I have a radical idea - instead of trying to let overweight people eat the foods "they enjoy and are used to," how about those of us who are overweight get "used to" a new, healthy way of eating and liking foods that are good for us? It's amazing how good vegetables can taste once you are "used to" eating them. Once this occurs, it's easy to stick to any diet.
Dr. Dan claims his diet is not low-fat, and yet in his example of a 200 pound person he expects them to only eat 67g of fat a day. That's pretty much low-fat in my opinion, and your food won't taste very good limiting yourself to that amount.
KUDOS for him on the amount of protein recommended - he says to shoot for 1g of protein per pound of body weight. While this might seem extreme to some people, it is safe and necessary to build muscle (again, he focuses on weight training, and protein is essential for this).
KUDOS to him for recommending supplements. I think everyone should take a multi-vitamin/multi-mineral supplement no matter what kind of diet you eat - low-carb, low-fat, low-calorie. It is hard to get enough vitamins from the food we eat today because the soil is depleted, we are less active than our paleolithic ancestors, and we eat more carbohydrates than they ("enriched" foods are the worst because they have everything good taken out and then a few things put back in).
Because we need less food and the food we eat isn't the high quality our ancestors ate, supplements are a good idea for EVERYONE today.
Again, if you are looking for a good, basic FITNESS program, then the exercises in this book will help you, and the carbohydrates allotment won't be extreme because you'll be working it off. But if you are looking to LOSE WEIGHT and keep it off there are better books.
Excellent for beginners - thorough and thoughtfulReview Date: 2006-11-12
If you've been involved in fitness and health for some time now the book won't offer you much that you don't likely already know. If you're interested in the `whys' of nutrition and exercise, or if you've just begun an exercise program the book could be the best on your shelf.
Hard truths....Review Date: 2006-10-01
And in Chapter 19 titled Tips for Success the author notes 'The most important part of physical assessment is being honest with yourself and what you are capable of achieving.' My personal trainer told me the same thing, when she asked me what I wanted to accomplish. I had told her I wanted to get more fit and lose weight. That's all. No, 'I want to lose 80 pounds in three months and have a rock solid body.' Since I knew reality from fiction. So like the author, my trainer started me slow and steady. And like the author notes, everyone will hit a slump where you don't seem to be making much if any progress, but you keep working out and keep watching what you are eating.
This is especially important for me as a woman since I have seen men drop weight so fats and get more muscle much faster than me, and I was being very disciplined. Just wish more trainers would tell women this, because watching shows like The Biggest Loser one can come away thinking that the men are working harder, when in fact the women may be working harder. But we as women are designed to carry babies and produced food for babies, and this means we naturally have more fatty like areas on our
bodies. So for me its all about looking at how small the clothes are getting, with more muscle mass, and not making what the bath scale says #1.
What a relief!Review Date: 2006-09-19
Of course, I haven't tried Dr Dan's method yet, and I look forward to seeing feedback from people who have.
I have one complaint about the book, and that is that people (myself included) who do not want to use a gym or buy expensive equipment are given very short shrift. I have much better exercises in my routine for some of the target muscle groups than Scott Halveston (the co-author) includes here.
Other than that, good job!
A good book for people willing to change their lifestyleReview Date: 2006-09-07
Deprivation dieting alone won't work, as the dozens of failed diets have clearly indicated, because most people cannot, and should not, go through life perpeutally hungry. Exercise will work, if you're willing to stick to it, but many people in our modern 24/7 society often drop exercise from their unhealthfully busy schedules because they think that they just don't have the time to do it. But eating sensibly doesn't have to mean starving oneself, and exercising can take as little as a half hour or so each day if done daily.
If you're willing to change to sensible eating habits, rather than just trying to go hungry, and also are willing to find a reasonable exercise pattern that you can stick to, this book has a lot to offer you. If you're not willing to make such changes in your lifestyle but, rather, are looking for a quick fix for weight problems, this book is not for you.

However, some prayers appear rote and pushed(i.e- X-Ray Vision which is actually a form of Wisdom.) I would have liked to have seen different types of prayers like praises for our children, praises to God for believing that he will provide, prayers for other mothers who although are married feel just as alone, prayer for the children's fathers. Making this book a series, whereby mothers understand the entire facet of prayer would be ideal.
Overall, a nice devotional that is great for a Mother's Day Gift, Bible Study on Prayer Life or a Women's Ministry.

The simple A-Z approach and conversational style of dialogue brings topics as burnout, integrity, rest, time management and zeal to prayerful introspection. I don't think of the Bible specifically addressing burnout per se, but the scriptural reference put my mind on a new train of thought and revealed that it is "ok" to feel overwhelmed with life and to seek strength from within your heart. I like the new approach, to thinking about life, that Ms. Curtis has eloquently expressed.
I've been ministered to, by reading Grip the Rope; there is something in this book for everyone. "Halloween" novelization expands on the storyReview Date: 2002-03-29
Well-written and paced, Curtis Richards expands on John Carpenter's storyline much better than any of the latter film sequels. We learn that Michael had a mentally ill grandfather who also had a poisonous rage against young lovers. Michael talks as a child and we get his third person viewpoint. We get Laurie Strode's thoughts on the evils of Halloween and then, when she gets confronted with them. Plenty of teenage chatter that's even better now that I read this as a adult. Unlike the movie, very little restraint with violence and sex. I wish Richards had written the "Halloween II" novel, because that one can't hold a candle, or a jack-o-lantern, to this one.

A concise, informative and solid primer. Review Date: 2008-06-25
I have work in International Medicine for 18 years. I have personally known outstanding dentist and medical doctors from countries all over the world, including those countries that Jeff Schult listed in this book (Brazil, Argentina, Mexico etc.). However, often in the same countries, I have meet and seen the work of incompetent, ignorant and unprofessional doctors as well. That said, I would have no hesitation getting certain medical & dental procedures in certain countries if I knew WHO would do WHAT, WHERE and HOW. That will take research.
Thus, above all do your homework. Start with a few good books. Jeff Schult has written a good primer. He set an excellent example of doing your homework when he wrote in his chapter titled: "Research, Research, Research" where he notes that he read books, gathered more than 1500 news stories and saved 6000 post from internet forums. This book, along with Josef Woodman's, "Patients Beyond Borders", can help you begin building a solid information base upon which you can make your plans. Happy Travels. This is definitely a book that every American should have. It also makes a perfect gift for anyone who admired Ronald Reagan, or for anyone who is interested in History.
I am ordering several as gifts, and I'm already looking forward to Volume II. Thank you, Curtis Patrick for such an interesting and well written book.
