Its a very "human" book

This novel is a fine book discussing the emotions of a 1st Lt in the US army during the Korean War. Its not a book about violence or bravery -- but rather a novel that looks at the very being of this man, Dana Curtis. It really focuses on his seperation from his family, and what keeps him going -- so i take it back, i guess it does talk about his bravery; his bravery to keep alive to see his wife and children again. It gets a little too mushy sometimes, but its not made up; these are the actual letters sent from Lt Curtis to his wife, and the honesty of the book is refreshing. You could say this novel is a sort of love story.
I'm a big fan of war movies and stories that portray the horrors or true warfare, and this is one of those stories. There is no heroic main character who defies all odds to save everyone -- this is a story about a man who just wants to get back to his wife and kids in one piece.
Its also interesting because this novel was written by the main characters grand-daughter.

NLE Production Soup-to-Nuts!

A friend wrote to me: "A couple of months ago, I purchased a book entitled, The Digital Producer, by Curtis Poole and published by Focal Press. It is aimed toward Avid users, in particular, but broadly usable by any non-linear system owner. One of the key features of the book is a system, provided on CD-ROM, for logging, storyboarding, scripting and a wealth of functions in production. It is the most comprehensive system of its kind I have yet seen and its strongest feature is that it works the way we work, not like some computer analyst who thinks he/she knows something about production."

I wrote back: "This program automatically does what I've been asking about (storyboarding). In its storyboarding feature, you can input an image file. I've imported a .bmp and it resizes it for me and places it on the page. Then you select another view of the page and it gives you the same image but larger size with any narration in the column next to it. These can be printed out and pasted around and . . . it's hard to contain my enthusiasm for this thing. Since you have it already you know all of this but, I'm blown away! Blown away!"

I can not say enough about this book/CD/and FileMaker template collection. If you can not organize your production with this package, you can not organize a production. It has shaved months off of my production schedule. Thanks for the great work!

The collaborative effort of author Jonathan Emmett and illustrator Curtis Jobling, Dinosaurs After Dark is a playful and entertaining story of Bobby, a young boy who follows the crunching step of giant feet at night, and finds dinosaurs after dark in the city square! Dinosaurs After Dark is an energetic tale, brought to life with bright, stylized color artwork, and especially recommended for beginning readers.

A Primary Source History Book

Most history books are dull. Not this one!

I came across this book at a garage sale. I thought it might be useful to get ideas for History Day topics for my kids. I found it so interesting and well written that I read it cover to cover.

The reader learns history the way historians do-using primary sources. The book shows how to analyze letters, speeches, newspaper articles, maps, advertisements, statistical data, court records, and first person accounts. This is not a comprehensive history book, but rather a historical sampling of 15 topics. Some of the topics are "Conceptualizing the Modern World (1500s)", "The Confucian Family (1600-1800)", Islamic Fundamentalism and Renewal in West Africa (ca.1775-1820)", and "Globalism and Tribalism: Challenges to the Contemporary Nation-State (1980's-1990s)".

The Authors give a brief background, questions to consider, and suggestions to help the reader analyze the primary sources. I would strongly recommend this book to advanced placement high school or college level history teachers. It teaches critical thinking in a way rarely found in history texts.

Where is Wisdom to be Found?
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-05-08
Let's face it. In contemporary culture, the virtue of wisdom is not a hot commodity. But if Edward Curtis and John J. Brugaletta are right, it should be, especially for Christians struggling to live out their faith in their own difficult context. According to Curtis and Brugaletta:

"Living wisely means receiving power from God to live and act as He designed us to live and act. He does not always tell us what choices to make. That is why He gave us the power to reason; He wants us to make some of the decisions. But He wants us to make them with Him at the center of our decision-making faculty, and thus according to His will and truth. That is what is meant by deciding wisely" (p. 16).

In "Discovering the Way of Wisdom", Curtis and Brugletta argue that the wisdom portions of Scripture (Proverbs, Ecclesiastes) are not, as many have thought, irrelevant to matters of faith, but rather are indispensable resources for helping a person to live well and wisely in the world.

"Discovering the Way of Wisdom" is comprised of ten chapters. In the first five chapters, the authors set up their argument for how the Old Testament Wisdom Literature is relevant and foundational to our spiritual lives. They show how wisdom interplays with a variety of areas in our practical, everyday life, including the areas of finances, emotions, relationships, priorities, and personal life goals. The final ten chapters are a roadmap to how you can begin cultivating wisdom in your own life, beginning with, of course, the fear of the Lord, the reading of Scripture, the practice of meditation, understanding the role of suffering in spiritual growth, and the importance of acknowledging and accepting certain mysteries in life. At the end of each chapter, the authors provide questions for further thought and reflection.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, and I was challenged to examine how wisely I conducted my own life and how I can grow in the future. "Discovering the Way of Wisdom" is the type of book you'll want to read and reread in order to fully digest all that Curtis and Brugaletta are trying to communicate.

A wise purchase indeed.

Deep, insightful thought-provoking work

In short, this book is about us people surviving in a world that is becoming ever more intrusive in the various technologies. It is to computers and cellphones what Charlie Chaplin's movie Modern Times was to the industrial revolution. Curtis puts in very human terms and touching stories and examples totally commonplace issues that are hassling us all, such as the overload of incoming e-mails or the ever-present ringing of the cellphone.

I work in the industry for digital convergence and am thus professionally exposed to a lot of the current thinking in this space. I read a lot from Rheingold's Smart Mobs to Beck's Got Game and just about everything about evolving technologies inbetween. This book was still able to touch me very deeply and had lots of revealing insights and many thoughts Curtis presents have resurfaced time and again, clearly rolling around in my mind. Reading the book, from chapter to chapter, I was hit again and again with the thought "oh my, and that's just like me; but I never thought of THAT as being a universal trait or experience." Reading the book gave an immense sense of calm in reacting to the rapid changes in society today.

He writes from personal experience through the high tech companies he has founded and uses many revealing examples from companies that have revolutionized parts of the industry. If you want a visionary book on the near future, and want to understand the humanity of it all, whether a sociologist to see it from the viewpoint of the human, or from the view point of the business/IT person wanting to make technology work better for us all, this is a book you will find most rewarding to read. I completely recommend it to all.

Politics for the Control of Oil and the Middle East Conflicts
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2006-05-13
Curtis Jones' book is indispensable reading for anyone serious about understanding the underlying causes of the Middle East conflicts. It provides the modern reader with the necessary foundation for understanding the modern struggles, rivalries, and conflicts in that region. The 16 chapters and two tables, provide little known relevant facts and statistics in an engaging and lucid manner. The book starts by providing the reader with a good overview of the events in the past millennia, and breaks up the land area into seven distinct geographic zones in a way that helps us connect historical events with the particular geography.

The book details the strategic importance of this area to West--because of the abundance of petroleum reserves. The reader will find details about the corporate battle for control of the Middle East oil fields at the start of the 20th Century, and the effect of broken promises made by Western countries on the stability, development, and politics of the region. The Middle East was a major theater of military operations during World War I, and Arab contributions to the Allied war effort was extremely important in defining the outcome of that war.

There is a chapter on the Israeli-Palestinian and Israeli-Arab conflicts. There are lessons to be learned from reading this book. For, example, a U.S policy - decision to punish Egypt in 1956, by withdrawing funds essential for its development, led to the nationalization of the Suez Canal, the Suez war, intervention by U.S to stop the invading countries. However, the way that war was resolved led to three other wars.

Finally, Curtis Jones is the product of a generation that still believes in a universal standard of justice, where terror "suspects" are not disenfranchised of their human rights, and where the U.S. is not disinterested in counting civilian casualties inflicted in Afghanistan, and Iraq. I recommend this book without reservation. A must read!
