If you are not computer-savvy or if you fear your kids are outpacing you in computer skills (hint, they know more than you think they do) then this is for you. ESPECIALLY for grandparents raising grandkids. HINT HINT. The internet is a funny place, a Wild West of opportunities, scam artists, predators and information (like in a Wild West Saloon) you don't want underaged kids to see and involve in.
The two parts of this book I really liked were how to set up email programs appropriately and better yet, how to check hard drives and other media for bad material that kids are getting into. I have heard so many times that the grandkids came to visit Mom-mom and Pop-Pop and the computer was virus-laden and porn-ridden to the point of unuseability after the kids got at it.
Unless you are really adept and a computer guru, this book is a great start for everyone.

An excellent compendium of leading thinkers on the ills that plague us. Not only do they accurately point out the flawed policies that have gotten us into the mess we are in right now, they give us solutions that work. A must read for anyone who cares about the future of this country.

We are making all the wrong decisions. It is our democracy. We have to take it back. The sound-byte political debates offer slogans and marginalize comprehensive thinking. It is a very dangerous time. America is being aggressive to "spred" democracy around the world with our out-of-control materialism. It can't work. One can't spred democracy with military violence and nonsensical materialism. Does the rest of the world really need 25 brands of toothpaste, but without adequate affordable dental care as we have in the United States?

One approach to the study of culture is to read the myths of that culture. Given the national interest in the Iran-Iraq area of the Middle East, this book provides a good sample. It is important that we Americans understand the culture and mind set of the Middle Eastern peoples in order to better evaluate the present War on Terror, and not blindly follow the ideas presented by the media.

I agree with the reader below, Corcoran's essay outshines them all. The best piece of political/personal/travel/humor writing I've read in ages, and a real historical document as well -- perfectly captures the atmosphere surrounding the 2000 inauguration. Can't wait to see more from this promising writer.

There is an essay in this issue of Post Road by Olisa Corcoran called "Shouting Obscenities at George Bush the Younger" and it's just so good that I had to share my opinion with potential readers.
This captivating true tale of inauguration day 2000 is insightful, humorous and ironic. It is an awesome recollection of a meaningful experience. A really interesting "slice of life".

Peter Brown is one of the greatest living historians of the 4th-6th centuries and this book is a fine example of the quality and incisive nature of his insights and writing.
In four clear and concise chapters, Brown offers deeply clarifying and engaging examples of how the Roman Empire was "christianized:" not in moving closer to embodying the Way of Jesus Christ, but in shifting power from the old urban elite to the bishops and their clergy. The key theme is the shift from focus on the power of local elites to contain and control imperial governors to the "love of the poor" which expanded and transformed the social understanding of civic identity and its relationship to "the center" of imperial power in Rome. Brown shows clearly how theology and politics are never separate by offering numerous illustrations of how the state of the Roman Empire greatly shaped the power shift he documents and describes so clearly.
These lectures are an easy to read foundation for understanding both the Roman world of the 4th-6th centuries and the ways in which that world shaped the christological doctrines that have remained at the heart of the creeds professed by Catholics and Protestants alike to this day.

Peter Brown, professor of History at Princeton University is the father of the field of Late Antiquity and this monograph is yet another invaluable contribution. While most people believe the popular fallacy that the Roman Empire was in a state of decline in the 4th Century, Professor Brown shows us the Roman state at the peak of its power. He discusses what bound the various local elite to the emperor, arguring that a shared sense of education and culture provided a crucial sense of coherency to the Empire. In addition, he discusses the nature of public largess in the late empire, how local nobles maintained their positions as "nourishers of the cities."
He chronicles a world undergoing intense change, and the focus of the book is largly how the Christian clergy adopts traditional methods of "power and persuasion" to establish itself as the leading power in cities.
Students of Classics tend to ignore the 4th and 5th centuries, brusquely declaring them "medieval" and thus inconsequential to a student of Rome's classical glory. Brown's book brings to life a dynamic and important moment in Roman history, a moment at once rooted in traditional Roman values, yet at the same time caught up in a whirlwind of religious change. As always, Professor Brown writes with a humane and style, making the book a joy to read.

This books brings up memories of being a child and all the funny things that happen. There is not any body that will not love this book. I read this book to a class of third and fourth graders, mostly boys. I had no idea that the students, the aides, the teacher and I would all enjoy it so much. There were days when we could not stop laughing. I think it is one of the all-time funniest books for children I have ever read. I would definitely put it in the top three.
I taught elementary school for twenty years and also spent many, many hours reading to my daughter, so this rating comes from someone who had read lots of great and not-so-great books. Everybody-- the 8-10 year old students and the 30-60 year-old adults-- loved the chapter about the unibrow most of all. Just thinking of it makes me laugh. As you can see from the age range of the people in the classroom while I was reading the book, the authors successfully appeal to a very wide audience.
I am delighted to see that Mike Knudson is coming out with a second book in early Sept.; I can't wait to share it with my class. I hope he realizes how much the 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students (especially boys) of America need Raymond and Graham to keep us laughing.

To view the world through Steven's prose is to see more profoundly. Those of us familiar with his writing on Authorsden.com know that to read his works is to inject the veins of our hearts with a literary feast! When I read his poetry, I feel as if my soul prospers. His ability to consider things most of us have forgotten, and to do so with such talented writing, is a gift to any reader. I both envy and love his depth of perception and am grateful he's chosen to share his talent with the world.

There is a place in heaven for many yet no spot is assured. Many seats in the majesty of the heavens are surely for the artisans of the world. Humble, wholesome souls for the most part, and Steven Curtis Lance would assuredly be counted amongst those. In the writings of Stevie his honesty and emotions come across clearly and vividly. The prose is an enigmatic slice of life that is uniquely his. The prolific writing habits that Stevie possesses make many a writer, myself included, jealous of his tenacity for attacking each morsel of life's daily grind. Sometimes making fun or a mockery of the little things or at other times taking a challenging stand against the most critical and important issues facing us today. This is the poetic style he embodies for the rest of us to enjoy.
As Stevie's doctor I engage him in a manner differently than any of his other relationships. That perspective allows me to see him from many perspectives from healthcare professional all the way quite frankly to a personal friend. Over the span of several years in that regard I saw his transition from Christian songwriter to poet and the dynamics involved in that change. Not only has there been a growth and learning phase to his abilities to put pen to paper, but Stevie's life and writing is a fantastic journey of love and emotion.
This is now his seventh book and perhaps his deepest and most mature work. At each phase of his writing career his personal state of being comes across in every word. This book is no different with a certain brooding and darker more forceful stance on life yet continuously instilled with his hometown old Orange slant. Stevie rarely leaves us questioning what he is feeling or where he is going, but he does make us question our personal relationships and dealings with others. Of course there is often a push for us to be politically and socially responsible, too, whether by way of rantings and ravings or a push to be heard and accountable.
I think Stevie's writing will take another turn soon as he takes us elsewhere in the land of feelings and prose. There is no harm in that. And, for the enjoyment we each derive from that, and the clear good nature and good will of Stevie's contribution to our wonderful world that spot in heaven is reserved. Not too soon of course so that we might read these little snippets of life and love and Grandma and whomever else man or beast or machine happens to be captured by the flowing inks and pencils of one fine man: Mr. Steven Curtis Lance.

Todd Curtis, Ph.D., himself a parent, teaches fellow parents how to protect their children in Parenting and the Internet: The Guide for Raising Your Child to Be Smarter and Safer Online. Chapters cover internet legal and ethical issues, how to properly manage the online experience of one's child, sample parent-child Internet agreements ideal for setting boundaries, advice on how to use search engines and other online services, tips for filtering unwanted email spam, links to helpful free software, and much more. Above all, Parenting and the Internet is packed with practical wisdom for keeping one's child safe from scam artists and worse predators. "There are some online activities; for example, using chat rooms and webcams, that attract the wrong kind of attention especially if children are allowed. According to the FBI, child predators often use these tools to evaluate their potential victims." A "must-have" for all parents in the increasingly Internet-driven twenty-first century.
