Charles Phillip Curtis is an unordinary man...[an] author, who extends every effort to write about things he cares about the most.
Mr. ...His life story of how his employer tried to kill him, in Factory Taunt to Murderous Haunt is one of Charles' many writings.
It is through his continued efforts and dreams to become an author, that if there was ever a medal or an award to be given to a man with the kindest heart, Mr. Charles Phillip Curtis would be the first man who deserves it.<

Because I kept the secret a secret so long except for my immediate family I found it hard to depart this story to the public. Although it is to be published as a faction much of it I find hard to face even today.

This is an inspiring book of poetry that is well worth reading.
Symbolism from his rural upbringing provides the central theme for this collection of poems. Bauer is a pure gem and I look forward to reading future publications.

Provides the reader with a sampling of Curtis Bauer's talent

An experienced poet whose work has appeared in such venues as "Barrow Street", "The North American Review", "Rhino", "Runes", and numerous other journals, Curtis Bauer's poetry assembled in Fence Line provides the reader with a full spectrum sampling of Curtis Bauer's talent and his unique poetic voice. In High Demand: I led a blind man astray this morning,/took him to the middle of an open field/then drove away./I took candy from a child/then pushed him into a puddle./I took change from a fat panhandler/then told the police to arrest her for loitering.//Tomorrow I'll give a stranger the wrong directions/and won't leave a tip after lunch./I'll misguide your children/and lie to the priest./If there is anything else to do/you can count on me./These are troubled times.

Fascinating story of the "other" Romanovs
Helpful Votes: 32 out of 32 total.
Review Date: 2003-10-23
As a history fan I am of course familiar with the tragic tale of the fall of the Romanovs and the killings of Nicholas and Alexandra and their children. And of course I was aware that the Romanovs were quite a sprawling family, with lots of Grand Dukes and Duchesses, but I did not know a great deal about these individuals, who are all equally fascinating in their own right - and often even more so, as Nicholas and Alexandra enjoyed a quiet life.

The book commences with the assasination of Alexander II and the ascent to the throne of his son Alexander III. From here we get to know of the young Nicki (later to be Tsar) and his other siblings, including Olga, who had a life of some hardship but did not complain until she died in her 80s. The book covers the revoltion of course, but for those readers wanting to know more about that and the impact on the immediate royal family, I recommend Robert Massie's excellent "Nicholas and Alexandra". What I found of more interest was how the extended royal family fared, some being executed the Bolsheviks, some enduring amazing hardship and escapes, and others being saved by sheer luck.

The final part of the book deals with the remaining Romanovs in exile, and examines the interaction with the competing family groups and individuals who laid claim to the now empty throne. These characters include Kyrill, who is the ancestor of George, the current claimant, and Dimitri, the ultimate playboy who had an affair with Coco Chanel and married an American heiress.

This book is a reminder of how revoltion and war can change the worlds of so many people, and how that change had spread and impacted through a Europe which was also in the throes of dramatic change. We must remember that the Romanovs were descended from or connected by marriage to most of the other royal houses in Europe, and there were many political and dynastic implications of the fall of the Romanovs. This is a fasinating story about fascinating people in a time when the world was turned upside down.

#1 - A 5 STAR PLUS -- EXTRA ACTION
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-02-08
Jackson "Golden" Garrett is back from helping fight fires in Russia. He has to face his ex-wife, his daughter and his emotional trauma.

His daughter, Heidi is estatic to have him back. Lexie is another matter. And also pregnant and worried about paying her bills.

Jackson Garrett is a Hot Shot, one of an elite team of wildland firefighters. He seems to have an instinct where the fires are concerned. Lexie just wants a man that will come home to her.

Firefighters are notorious for being gone for most of the year, especially when the summer fires take over the wooded lands.

Jackson is living with the fear that he has lost his nerve, he is afraid to face the fires, afraid of losing another life.

He and Lexie have a lot of issues to work out - very emotional - some humorous - and then Jackson's mother is falling for Sirus, also involved with the Hot Shots.

Jackson's best friend, Logan "Tin Man" McCall is living through a trauma of his own, with his twin sister dying and leaving him responsible for her twin daughters. Lexie and Jackson try to be there for Deb.

We are allowed to meet a few of the Hot Shot members, "Tin Man", Logan McCall - "Rookie" - "Chainsaw" Hudson and Aiden "Spider" - Sirus "Socrates", head honcho of the Silver Bend, Idaho team. What a great bunch of guys.

Follow Lexie through her pregnancy and Golden through his mixed up emotions and their attempts to get back together. [Is it a boy or another girl?]

Surely do hope there will be more stories about these characters - Logan is next #2 and then Spider rates his story #3.
Who will be next?

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED - Definitely a keeper!

A must read for all Christians, especially females, who are seeking a better understanding of the role of the woman in the church and in the world. The author examines the lives of women in the Bible and allows the reader to see the lessons of their lives and how it connects to ours. The material is fresh, new and insightful. I could not put it down, stayed up all night to finish reading.

Required reading for those interested in the KKK

Review Date: 2003-01-08
This book tells the story of the KKK in Indiana. It turns out this was a real hotbed for the KKK and they were extremely powerful controlling cities, police, the governor. If you think of the KKK as Southern, this book will set you straight. The head of the Indiana KKK was D.C. Stephenson who was tried for rape and murder. A truly scary book, but a page burner and dead-on historically.

An INCREDIBLE but TRUE tale in Hoosier history!

If you like true "whodunit" stories that still leave you wondering at the end, then this is the book for you. An unfathomable story leading up to a 1920s "Trial of the Century," Lutholtz raises almost as many questions as he answers in his quest for understanding of the mind and actions of D.C. Stephenson, a man so powerful he brought down a governor and a mayor in seemingly one fell swoop, controlled the police chief of a major metropolitan city of the time and had the temerity to claim "I am the law in Indiana." The author does a superb job in uncovering information concerning Stephenson's trial for murder that many Hoosiers don't seem comfortable discussing. Lutholtz also offers excellent coverage of the lawyers and judges involved, and the dangers and pitfalls they faced in trying a man who terrified just about everybody!

I'm on a septic system, as are other homes in my subdivision. I've often thought that there should be a cost effective way to re-use much of the water that I consume. This book describes several low-cost alternatives for implementing just such a system. The optimal Graywater system really depends upon what you want to accomplish and how much water you consume. This book is an excellent starting point for evaluating and developing an effective plan based upon an individual's water use pattern. References, including web resources, are also included for further study.

This book explains both the theory of how a Graywater system works along with giving practical, useful, easy-to-follow, illustrated information on how to construct one at a cost-effective price. The author actually documented building his own Graywater system and then shared the experience he gained through this book. I am glad that I purchased this book, because I know sometime in the near future, I'll use it to actually construct my own Graywater system.

Accessibility without simplification

Hegel is notoriously difficult to understand. When an exposition of his philosophy, entitled "The Secret of Hegel", was published in the 19th century, a critic accused its author of "keeping the secret." Charles Taylor, by contrast, without academic arrogance--in fact, with characteristic humility--makes brilliantly accessible this abstruse philosopher. Taylor eloquently extracts the essence and logic of Hegel's arguments; and shows the relationships between Hegel's metaphysics and social philosophy; thereby revealing to the reader the whole system of Hegel's philosophy, rather than its isolated components. Along the way, he dispels many of the false myths that surround Hegel's often quoted but rarely read philosophies. And not only does Taylor make sense of Hegel in the philosopher's own historical and intellectual contexts, but, as the title of the book implies, Taylor shows the relevance that Hegel's ideas still hold today. This is a gem of a book for people studying Hegel, for people studying philosophy, political science, or history. Highly recommended.

N.B.: Dupicative of certain chapters of Taylor's "Hegel."

Review Date: 2005-09-16
The book does deserve five stars--but there is a need to call attention to the preface of "Hegel and Modern Society," which is absent from the free, searchable content available here. Professor Taylor candidly puts it, in the preface, that this book is substantially the same as the various chapters in his excellent "Hegel" dealing with Hegel's relation to contemporary society. In short, if you own a volume of Taylor's "Hegel" you already have the content of this book--you needn't buy both.
