History and Mystery with a twist!

Of all the audio books I have listened to over the last year, this one is the absolute winner. The mix of academia and murder is reminisant of the Morse mysteries, while the detective, Father Shreader is a modern day Cadfile. To add to the enjoyment of a great mystery story is the mini latin and history lessons throughout making this one of the more unique audio book offerings. I would recomend this title to anyone with a passion for mystery who wants to lay back and enjoy a great audio book.

Fun mysterious entertainment, satiric cut at modern academia

The Case of Ockham's Razor makes a nice introduction to Father Shrader, a burly, cigar-champing academic priest. A philosophy professor, Father Shrader solves his crimes using classical philosophical principals. Which is not only very original, but also a fun way for readers to bone up on the classics.

Set in the fictional college town of Stonehaven, at a fictional, (yet very reminiscent) catholic liberal arts college, 'St.Swithun's College', this story transported me back to my own college days under the tutelage of the Jesuits. Thankfully, all of the classical Latin allusions are translated within the story -- quite good fun! The satirical humour is non-stop. Sultry co-eds, thick-headed jocks, quirky & obsessive academics, and petty college administrators all play their parts as we would expect. But, who killed J. Garrison Nielson, the wealthy college benefactor is something very few will have expected before its revelation in the story!

Yet, the clues are there. And perhaps some mystery hounds will figure this one out. Educated readers, catholic school survivors, and mystery lovers will all enjoy this book.

Perhaps not Edgar material, but certainly worthwhile reading.

My local librarian recommended this to me for my 3-month-old. When I brought it home and opened it up, his eyes grew wide and his mouth opened with wonder. He absolutely loves the illustrations. No matter how fussy he is in the evening, if I open this book up, he will sit still to look at it and listen. The story is simple yet beautiful, and I've decided to buy the book so he can enjoy it for the next few years.

A beautiful book

This is the most beautifully illustrated book I've seen in years. Each page is a complete story, done with sophistication, and stunnningly executed. It's a timeless story about star-crossed lovers in the animal kingdom. It teaches tolerance and acceptance in a non-dogmatic quirky way. Great for Kids!!!!! (and adults too)

This book is a delight! Familiar old hymn tunes were taken and cat-appropriate words were written. Then they are beautifully performed. And they are a HOOT! If you have ever loved a kitty, you will love this book. But DON'T BUY IT WITHOUT THE CD!! The whole effect is lost without the CD. Put it in your car and I guarantee traffic won't bother you quite as much as usual.

Enjoyment and good cause in one package

A full range of hymn performance styles - Gospel quartets, bluesgrass, blues, country ... is here performed by cats of distinction (actually it sounds as if the cats ordered their human musically inclined servants to sing as proxies).

A short list of a few of the delights:

I Will Sing of My Purina which sounds suspiciously like I Will Sing the Wondrous Story

Oh, They Tell Me of a Home which sounds suspiciously like Oh They Tell Me of a Home

Lord, I'm Coming Home the lyrics of which are only slightly odd

Tussle and Play which sounds suspiciously like Trust and Obey.

You also get the complete lyrics to sing along. An even the end pages are useful, introducing you to the cream of religious cats such as Reverend A. Jax: "To poor little kitties / Who've gone astray / He preaches salvation ... / He shows the way."

This book is very well written and stays interesting throughout. My five year old daughter recieved this as a gift from a family member who lives in Michigan and once we started reading it we couldn't put it down. It was a great starting point for my daughter to learn about different areas of the united states as well. Great book, perfect for all ages.

This is an excellent historical fiction book for young adults. It tells a tale of adventure, family, and values. The characters are interesting people that share their love of the outdoors and the lifestyle of the rural Lake Superior shores.

Simply a great set of books covering systems and network forensics

As you can find in their individual reviews, each book received high marks on its own merit. Put together and this set of three books cannot be beat in the area of system and network forensics.

Although not entrenched in the area of forensics, I do feel that I have a strong technical background upon which to build. I found this series of books refocusing me to think more like a forensics investigator. Not only did I have the opportunity to dig deeper into specific technology areas, but it also reinforced the concepts through scenarios.

Not for the faint of heart, this practical set of books expects you to have a decent technical background to make the best use of it. If you are interested in taking your forensics know-how to the next level, this is a great reference set to be added to your library.

Great book, great info

This set of books is very well written and provides a tremendous amount of information to the reader. I would recommend this set of books to anyone who wants to roll up their sleeves and truly get their hands dirty.

I would not recommend these books for the beginner as the material will quickly give one the feeling of "Drinking from a firehose" without a reasonable amount of knowledge going in. The authors do state that while the books are written to be easy to understand they are not for the beginner.

This anthology is a collection of essays and poems by women who live (or lived) in the American West, on their idea of what community means to them.

Some of these women are professional writers, and some are previously unpublished writers, but some simply have a story to tell.

And what stories! These women write in a straightforward and unpretentious manner about the women (and men) who lift them up, aggravate them, support them, teach them, and, more often than not, need their help in return. We hear stories of Native American healers, church groups serving funeral lunches, firefighters, book clubs, families, snow-shovel posses, and politics in the West.

I feel like I want to give this book to all of my close women friends, whether they physically live in my community or not.

The essays in this book will definitely make you think about your own connections to others, no matter what size town you call home. I highly recommend it, and cannot wait to get my hands on the other anthologies by these editors (Leaning into the Wind, and Woven on the Wind).

A must for any woman--western or not

To be quite honest, the only reason I bought this book was because my friend's essay was in it. Wow! now I want to buy all of the books in this series of anthologies.
These are true stories by our friends, neighbors, and people we probably don't much care for who live down the lane. And because these women so fearlessly let us into their lives, we are able to be part of that circle of comapssion and understanding that is what I believe is the true nature of humanity.
Yeah I know, I'm making it sound like it's a bluepprint for world peace--but maybe it is!
Anyway, these are stories(and poems) that will make you weep and laugh out loud --I would recommend it to any type ofwomen studies groups.

A Lesson from the Past.

This book is a the result of a remarkable research effort. The authors defy many absent and possibly destroyed official school records and memorabilia to piece together primary sources such as interviews, newspapers, and old school performance programs. The outcome provides insight into the positive aspects of a valued segregated school in Northwestern Alabama.

The book provides tangible evidence of an educational system which employed ingredients for success that may benefit today's underachieving schools.

MUST READ FOR THOSE INTERESTED IN THE WELFARE OF CHILDREN

This book gives a passionate description of the impact of segregation/desegregation in the lives of African American children. It tugs at your heart strings as it provides critical information about the past (that many people can identify with as a part of their own educational experience) and compelling recommendations for the present and future to ensure that caring and nurturing educational environments are provided not only for African American children but for ALL children as well. Great resource for educators, administrators, and parents.

Wonderfull stories and an easy read. Amazing how we go through life, survive its hurdles and finally come to realize that His hand was in the mix all along. As a fellow pilot, my hair stood up on many of the stories that could have ended very differently if not for divine intervention.

Great book Curtis.

It was a great book filled with some of the most amazing flying stories you'll ever hear. What's more amazing is that this guy actually survived it all. I would highly recommend this book, it flows very well and I can't think of a single story that was dull. It reads very much like the author is sitting across from you at a table telling you all the crazy flying stories of his youth.

I loved every minute of this book!!! The book is fun, and a good change from the serious subjects of the teenage world. The main character, C.C. has a funny personality, and reminds me of a lot of my friends. Cluck is "delicious" as Grace says, and Natalie is the queen of clothes. All the characters remind me of real life people, and the book was realistic in a crazy way. I'm gonna read more of the author's works. I just hope they halfway resemble this book!

An Exceptional Story

I read about this book in a review in seventh grade and wanted to read it so badly, my mom and I searched libraries everywhere! We finally got it through an inter-library loan from Vancouver, Canada. As soon as I picked up the book, I knew all of our hard work was worth it. I was wrapped up in the story of beautiful C. C. I read the story in two hours flat; not because it was easy. Just because I couldn't put it down. Pre-teens and teenage girls everywhere--this is the book. If you own one book in all of your teenage years, make it this one. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
