Once in a great while, a book comes along in the stream of tired, overworked romance series that blows away all hint of catagory: This is such a book. A strait-laced librarian, who supercedes the stereotype, falls in love with a male stripper who is both more and less than he seems. There is nothing superficial about this book. The story is told with a tenderness and honesty that made this jaded reader squirm uncomfortably, laugh, and cry. If you can find a copy of this book, get it.

Still One of the Best

This was one of the first romance novels I ever read, and these many years later (and after many, many re-reads), it is still one of the funniest and sweetest of all the romances! Tom and Sharon had a winning team and I can honestly recommend all of their books--buy them if you can--but this was my "first love" and still has the power to enchant and entrance!

The Loveswept Line was a treat for romance lovers. Many well know authors have come out of this line and it is a shame that it is no longer around. Lighnting That Lingers could possibly be the best book to ever come out as a single category romance.
This books is very sweet and telling of human nature and what we see is not necessarily what we get.
Jennifer is a very shy librarian who has just started out on her own. One night her co-workers go out for a night on the town. They go to a strip club where they salivate over stripper Philip. Jenny is just plain embarrassed by the whole situation, which Philip senses, but tries to help her enjoy herself by offering her a little kiss.
Philip is not only a stipper. He is from a very old school family upbringing, has a love for animals and is very very lonely. He needs money and the only way he knows how is to strip for it. He sees Jenny again in town and knows there is something special about her. Perhaps she can help erase his loneliness?
The Curtis duo have written Jenny and Philip in a beautiful way. Philip is described as drop dead gorgeous whereas Jenny is a little plain but also cute. Philip handles her like one of his baby owls. Jenny in turn allows herself to accept what Philipis offering.
These are just two people trying to find their place in life. Hopefully Jenny can get past Philip's job so they can build a life together.
Philip is a true gentleman in every sense and Jenny maybe a little nieve but when she is with Philip, she shines.
For adults and teens alike, this book will "Linger" long after you have finished.

Malevolence - Review

The 276-page novel, Malevolence, could be classified as a mystery-paranormal fiction with elements of horror, action and murder.

Multiple murders, including her husband and very dear friend, send Icy on an action packed race to save her son. She discovers a past so disturbing that it is difficult for her to accept. She is thrown into a world of the supernatural when she discovers that she has been targeted by demons. Spirits haunt her and her only strength comes from the instinctual desire to protect her teenaged boy. Her sanity is tested time and again - and it is only through the aid of a priest and a detective who are willing to risk all to protect her, that Icy finds a way to face the challenge.

I truly enjoyed reading Malevolence, by Nancy Mehl. The author applied an excellent start to the book with an intriguing character set-up.

Nancy Mehl is heartless when it comes to murdering characters, but she sure keeps you guessing while reading her mysteries. Just when you think you have this book figured out and think you know where it's going, you get thrown for a loop with another shocking murder and all your theories get tossed out the window.

Icy Curtis is a completely believable heroine, even while she's figuring out clues before the cops. Her self-deprecating humor is delightful, and her emotional struggles bond her to readers because they're pretty much the same things we all go through. I'm so glad her adorably crusty new buddy, Det. Milt Barbarino, is determined to keep her involved in crime solving so I'll get to read more of her adventures, and I can't wait for the next one!

I found it hard to put this book down. When I did, I couldn't wait to get back to it. The characters are very real, very likable. That's what makes it so chilling -- the reader knows these characters, they are the people down the street, the folks next door, the folks we live with day in and day out. Yet, evil stalks them.

MALEVOLENCE was one of the most satisfying reads I've had in quite a while. I don't usually get caught up in series books, but I can't wait to read the next book in the Icy Curtis Mystery series.

Nancy Mehl's mystery chillers are always top notch. This first in the Icy Curtis series is no exception.

Isabel "Icy" Curtis and her son Danny have moved from Chicago to Wichita KS after the murder of her husband David. To ease the shock of widowhood, Icy volunteers at a shelter for battered women. When the shelter owner, Helen Brimmer, fails to show up for work, Icy investigates. What she finds is a nightmarish scene. Helen has been horribly murdered in her home. Written on the wall in blood above Helen's head is scrawled one word: Malevolence.

Following Helen's murder they meet Det. Milt Barbarino. When a second body turns up, then a third, Milt's concern for Icy and her son increases. He fears for their lives. A creeping, unseen evil has followed Icy to Wichita and won't rest until she's dead. The clues are buried in her past and continue to haunt her present in the form of frightening dreams. Despite her vulnerability and fear, Icy is courageous and intelligent. Milt is a devoted and powerful ally. Together they take
on a demonic predator living in familiar and trusted human form. The predator could be anyone.

Malevolence gave me chills. I suspected everyone except Icy, her mother, and Danny. It will be interesting to see what Nancy Mehl devises to scare the bejabbers out of me in the second in this series. For readers who like scary mysteries, this one is highly recommended.

I've been curious about Linux for some time now. But, the only books that I could find, are all on installing, administering, configuring. Every one rehashing what the other said. None of them sold me on diving in.

When I discovered this book, I was apprehensive, but I went for it and purchased it. All I have to say is WOW! I never realised how flexible Linux is, or how much you could do.

I was thouroughly impressed on the variety of this book. I've finally been inspired to dive right in to Linux.

This book will teach you fun things. This book will teach you useful things. This book takes you on a tour you can't help but enjoy. At the end of the day, you'll find yourself not only entertained, but more knowledgeable about what you can do with Linux. It's probably more than you think!

This book helped me discover new interests and new possibilities, all in easy to read and entertaining prose. With that in mind, I'm giving this book the highest rating possible.

Linux (+ open source tools) as a swiss army knife
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2002-11-18
Technically, Linux is the name for the operating system kernel at the heart of "Linux" distributions such as RedHat and Debian. When most people "use" Linux, they are in fact using the shell, the web server, or any other of the zillions of open source programs that (1) are available for, (2) are distributed with, or (3) can run atop the Linux kernel.

It used to be that there were only a few things you could do with a Linux box (namely run a Unix box as a web server) but the open source community has come a long way in providing (1) applications and (2) hardware support, so that you can now do a lot of things w/ your Linux box that used to only be doable on a Windoze box.

Schwarz et al have put together a smorgasbord of things you can do with your Linux box. These projects range from things you would tend to do on a Unix box (eg IP Masquerade, SSH, system security, even a chapter on writing Apache modules!) to stuff you would expect to need to do on a Windoze box (eg burning CDRs, syncing with Palm devices, and audio/MIDI/image/video processing).

The level of detail in the chapters (as well as the required level of Linux familiarity on the part of the reader) varies considerably -- a hazard of multiple authors and the breadth of the topics covered -- but each chapter starts off with a "Difficult-o-Meter" which more or less accurately states the level of Linux proficiency required.

That said, there are some real gems to be found in this book. There are some pretty hefty howto-like treatments in this book of topics such as system security, "undernets" (collaborative web sites), and setting up a web/IMAP/mail server.

There's a chapter on "Tools You Should Know", which lists the tools a typical Unix hacker should know: regular expressions, vi, dd, sed, diff, etc. Like some other parts of the book, this chapter doesn't give you a lot of information on these individual tools, but it brings them to your attention, so you at least know what to look for.

This book by itself won't turn a newbie into a Linux ninja after one reading, but it is a good overview of many different things that can be done with open source tools on a Linux box. I would highly encourage the prospective reader to take a look at the Table of Contents of this book. If you see a topic you're interested in, then this is a worthwhile book to buy. (I suspect that most folks running Linux at home at a beginner to intermediate level will find several bits of interest in this book.)

every once in a while, a book pops up that really succeeds in almost every way imaginable...that is, capturing the imagination, feeling empathy with/for the characters and then simply getting so involved with the story that nothing else exists except the written word...The Officers'Ward is one of these jewels...the lovely thing about it is that it may be read in one sitting and even though the story is quite tragic, there is a certain slant of optimism that keeps the story alive. a simple, elegant story...i highly recommend.

fantastic first novel

Review Date: 2002-11-18
Based on the experiences of his grandfather in WWI, Marc Dugain writes beautifully about a hospital ward of soldiers recovering--if that can be done--from severe facial injuries. The Officers Ward is a powerful account of what it means to go to war and to have oneself disfigured and, perhaps, left literally speechless. The characters make the reader uncomfortable and make each other uncomfortable, as the story explores what men can and cannot share with each other. These soldiers, including the main character Adrien Fournier, talk of their own pain and of women and of the men still in the trenches. This story is especially powerful because the men who fought WWI are largely gone--it's a history that cannot be lost to new generations. Now that it's available in paperback, I'm doubly recommending this short novel to friends.

If you're interested in short novels, you might also consider Julie Otsuka's When the Emperor Was Divine, a story about a Japanese-American family during WWII. Other good, short novels include Bill Grattan's Ghost Runners (think baseball), Jane Smiley's Ordinary Love & Good Will (think Midwest), Neal Bowers' Loose Ends (think Tennessee funeral), and Helen Humphreys' Afterimage (think 19th-century photographer).

Another Tragic (well-written) World War I Novel
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2002-03-02
Perhaps the tragedies, the horrors, and the heroics of World War I have been
chronicled over and over, but perhaps, still, not often enough. In Marc Dugain's first
novel "The Officers' Ward," the French-born author has furnished yet another story (and
lesson) from the "War to end all Wars."

To say it was "the worst of times" would be an understatement and young
Lieutenant Adrien Fournier finds himself an early casualty of the German onslaught. He's
devastatingly wounded--much of his face is blown away--and he's transported to Paris to
await recovery and rehabilation for the rest of the war, some five years or so. A bright
young man (an engineer by education), and handsome, he must now face a future
grotesquely disfigured and to a whole where self pity, even repulsion, await him. He
forms a long-standing bond with three others who've suffered similar injuries. It is a time
for them all to come to grips with their own mortality.

But Fournier is no lightweight and sets about facing his own destiny. His time in
hospital--in a special ward for soldiers with such facial injuries--serves as the basis of his
own positive perception of the world to come. It's not an easy ride for him.

The general idea for this story comes from Dugain's own grandfather, himself a
veteran of The Great War. "The Officers' Ward" was honored with France's Prix des
Libraires, and was on the short-list for the Grand Prix of the Académie Française.
Dugain's power of description and episode is a depressingly tragic view of such a
senseless war, yet these tragic elements are somehow overshadowed by the hope and the
will of the human spirit to rise above the personal pitfalls and to function positively within
the confines of a civilized society. But most importantly it is within the confines of his own
self-image that Lieutenant Fournier prevails. Dugain deserves his accolades.

Well structured book for first time mail server systems
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-06-18
I bought this book just out of interest to read a book about mail servers.
I have setup mail servers before (including virtual domains etc.).

I think this book sales point is the combination of the well thought structured contents, the nice contents flow, the good administration manners and well paced chapters based on simple proven solutions.

Its one of the books which you just cant put down till the end. The author has its very own idea of how to tell the story and its refreshingly different.

He is deliberately splitting up processes for server and client side point of view (f.e sending and receiving e-mails, filtering etc.)and goes the extra miles to bring his points accross.

The book describes all required functionality for basic, but full blown mail server systems (Virtual domains, clusters etc. are - if at all - only mentioned for completion purpose).

I did like that the authors have a good feeling on how much information first time system admins can take. Whereever possible the author gives basic explanations about the components described, warn to make backups before proceeding, and reasons the design decisions he made (keywords: backward compatibility with previous standards, work arounds etc.).

I also liked the motivating spirit, design considerations and experiences the author is sharing with the reader. I would give it 5 stars for junior system administrators, 3-4 for seniors.

Regardless of how many stars I give it, I find the story, how its told, its ideas and the spirit of it most impressive.

Full marks !!

I am very impressed with this book. My interest in deploying my own email server has been peeked by recent events concerning privacy. While I am a programmer and I lean towards open source technologies, I was a little skeptical of my abilities of launching an open source email solution. After about four chapters of this book I relaxed because I realized the author was never assuming anything on part of the reader. Everything was thoroughly documented before me. Plus it's cool that the author adds in a little bit of history here and there on email. I definitely recommend this book. Just remember to get the most out of it, read it front to back.

Good for beginners...if you're more advanced, look elsewhere.

If you're a beginner this is a great book. However, I guess I'm at a higher level than what this book aims for. For example, I don't need the whole history of email, nor do I need basics on getting around a Linux system. Also, this book used FC4 and sendmail, while I am a Debian guy who uses Postfix.

If you've never set up a server before, give this book a shot. Otherwise, look for something a little more advanced.

Also - Poor editing! See especially the discussion of IMAP servers (appears as "IMA" in several tables). There are other assorted errata as well. Nothing a second edition can't fix (from what I saw).

In the interest of self-disclosure I should note that I am a co-author of one of the ranking tasks in this book.

That having been said, I have found this collection of assessment tools to be a valuable addition to the various pencil and paper activities I use in my physics classes.

The idea of the ranking task is to have a student compare a umber of physically similar systems that are allowed to vary in only one or two ways. The student must rank the systems (usually from greatest to least) on the basis of one of the system's physical variables (i.e.-velocity, acceleration, electric field strength, currect, etc.). The variables that are allowed to change may or may not affect the ranking of the systems. As an example, the mass of a falling object may be allowed to vary over rocks allowed to fall under the influence of gravity only. The ranking task may ask the student to rank the systems ont he basis of which one took the longest time to fall. In this case, the mass, while different in each situation, is irrelevant to the fall time and thus would not be used to determine the ranking.

The real power of these assessment tools is that they can quickly and clearly get at a student's mis/alternative conceptions as to which physical variables might change a system's behavior. The items can be used as quiz and test questions as well as during class time as a "self-check" on "in-class check" by the educator to assist students in working through a Karplus learnign cycle of ellicit-confront-resolve and apply for a concent or concept cluster in a subject area.

In addition to ranking tasks for most of the areas found in standard first year physics curriculum that book also discusses the pedagogical theory behind the assessment tool and has an answer key. As a physics educator, I have found this resource to be extraordinarily helpful both as a source of material for my classes and as an inspiration in creating my own material. I would rcommend this for any physics educator teaching high school or college physics at the introductory level.

Students's preconcetions (misconceptions, alternative/naive/intuitive conceptions) are generally main obstacles of conceptual learning. This book merely aims to overcome that problem by providing a task of ranking for a set of physical situations. Topics are; Kinematics, Forces, 2-D motion, Work-energy, Impulse-momentum, Rotational motion, Properties of matter, Thermodynamics, Waves, Electrostatics, DC and resistive circuits, Magnetism and EM. An effective way in your teaching of physics.

These two minute devotionals whisper gentle words of encouragement that move me to a place where I stand, before the eyes of the Lord--just He and I. I've had devotionals before, but I've never had one that made me feel quite as valuable to God as Rise and Shine.

Liz understands the pressures we feel to look thin, stay young, and live harmoniously with our spouse, and addresses these concerns with the warmth of her humor and wisdom. Believing that there's a radiant woman inside each one of us, Liz lends a hand in drawing her out, and encourages us to find our source of joy in the Lord and Him only.

Liz Curtis Higgs speaks from the heart. She has been there, done that, and survived it all to write it down and relate to you! The book is divided into a daily devotional, about 2 easy to read pages for each day. Liz recommends only reading one devotional per day so that you do not get spiritual whiplash!
Liz writes on a practical spiritual level, she does not talk down to her readers or preach her beliefs in an over-bearing way.

Edward Sheriff Curtis dedicated his life's work to documenting the customs and lifeways of the Native American peoples of North America. This extraordinary book includes some of the best photographic examples from Curtis' twenty volume masterpiece, "The North American Indian," one of the most significant representations of traditional indigenous culture ever produced.

Curtis was one of two official photographers for the 1899 Harriman expedition to Alaska. On his return, he stopped in northern Montana, accompanied by George Bird Grinell, editor of Forest and Stream. There he witnesses the deeply sacred Sundance of the Piegan and Blackfoot tribes, a sight which transformed his life. Grinell said to him at that time, "Take a good look. We're not going to see this kind of thing much longer. It already belongs to the past". It became clear to him then, that he was to record, with pen and camera, the life of the North American Indian. By the time the last volume appeared in 1930, little remained of the ancient traditions of the peoples he photographed.

Beginning in 1900 and continuing over the next thirty years, Edward S. Curtis, sometimes called the "Shadow Catcher" by tribes' people, took over 40,000 photographs and recorded ethnographic information from over eighty American Indian tribal groups, ranging from the Eskimo or Inuit people in the North to the Hopi people of the Southwest. In the end, the work comprised twenty textual volumes and twenty portfolios with over 2,000 illustrations.

"Sacred Legacy: Edward S Curtis And The North American Indian" was compiled and published to honor the 100th anniversary of Curtis's project to photograph the North America's indigenous peoples, and is a sacred legacy. This impressive volume beautifully reproduces in luminous images 200 of Curtis's greatest photographs from the finest source materials available - a significant number from platinum, gold and silver prints. Christopher Cardozo, an authority on Curtis, carefully selected the photographs for publication and for the accompanying exhibition. Writers who contribute their work here include: Joseph D. Horse Capture, N. Scott Momaday, and Anne Makepeace.

The photographs are organized by tribes and culture areas, encompassing the Great Plains, California, the Southwest, Plateau Region and Woodlands, Pacific Northwest, and Alaska. These reproductions represent an artistic masterpiece worthy of any collection. This volume is a fitting tribute to Curtis's genius.

"The passing of every man and woman means the passing of some tradition, some knowledge of sacred rights possessed by no other." Edward S. Curtis (1868-1952)

I absolutely love this book, the photagraphs are stunning. As a Native American of the Plateau Tribes, I love to browse through the photographs and see the images of my ancestors. My family consists of many different tribal Nations, from Coastal to Plateau and Plains, so it is nice to see the faces and the land as well as the clothing during the time these images were taken.

perhaps a generation too late

The many photographs have a hazy sepia tinge that somehow adds to the distancing from us, the present day readers. Curtis did an amazing and sympathetic photographic survey of native Americans in the early 20th century. His collection epitomises the changing view of natives, to the broader American society. No longer were they portrayed as bloodthirsty savages. Instead, Curtis took care to show many natives in peaceful surroundings. Often, getting on with everyday chores. A distinguishing aspect is that few of the photos show them brandishing weapons.

Keep in mind that even by the earliest photos, there were very few "wild" natives left in the US. Years earlier, they had been defeated by the US army, and the survivors often relegated to reservations. So what the photos show are domesticated peoples. Nomadic no longer, even if their forebears had been so just a generation ago.

In this sense, Curtis was a generation too late. Had he been a contemporary of Matthew Brady, he might have given us a visual legacy of peoples that were more unassimilated. Though of course he would have risked real injury to himself, in doing so. Still, we should not complain. Curtis did well with what he had, in the era he inhabited.

The works of Edward S. Curtis are monumental and beautiful. This book reproduces them with stunning clarity capturing the luminescence of his orotones remarkably well. The text serves to convey the rich meaning behind the photographs. For anyone interested in photography, art, or the story of the Native Americans, this is a treasure not to be missed.

I was excited when I bought this book, since it is the School of Cooking. It is a very good book, but I was expecting traditional meals from the Santa Fe area. In fact, the food items are from a more modern perspective instead of traditional. The book itself is excellent. It is just that I was fooled about the content as far as what type of foods to expect.

If I was looking for the more modern type of cooking that is featured in this book, I would have given it five stars. As far as that goes, the book covers everything anyone would need to know.

If you are looking for traditional New Mexican cooking, I give it four stars, since most of the recipes are ultra-modern with new taste combinations. The background information is very interesting to read and also very informative.

Another MUST for those Southwest Food Lovers!

After experiencing authentic southwest cuisine in wonderful old west locations like Durango, Colorado, and Santa Fe, New Mexico, I had to have some more of it back here in northeastern Pennsylvania. This book does it all, with a terrific range of tasty recipes - literally from soup to nuts - and its text is fully complimented by tasteful color photography and artwork.
It makes a great gift for your favorite cook - trust me, I know !

We have always been fascinated by the cuisine of Santa Fe, a new age culinary vortex that attracts the most creative spirits in the food world. Like Cuban food, the Santa Fe style blends cooking modes and techniques from several cultures -- Spanish, Native American, Mexican, and Anglo -- to create a rich new cuisine. We enjoy the fresh new tastes and the vitality of the Santa Fe School of Cooking.

Of course, Santa Fe cuisine is unlike Cuban cuisine in its celebration of the pepper in all of its varieties. Where Cuban food sticks to the mild side of the pepper world, cooking Santa Fe style allows us to really take a walk on the wild side with hot and spicy peppers. When we want to really spice things up in the kitchen, we really enjoy these recipes with their use of a dozen or more chiles that define Santa Fe cuisine.

Somehow the authors of Southwest Cuisine have managed to create a style of "Haute Cuisine" without being pretentious, and that is an amazing accomplishment. No matter how sophisticated the dish, this is food that remains true to its more humble roots and never loses the earthiness and sincerity of its food origins.

We enjoy rice and we have been making rice pudding for ages. The authors include a savory version of rice pudding that is a real treat! Other favorites include the orange cilantro salsa, cream cheese pie with pineapple coconut sauce, and a unique "lasagna" laced with smoky chipotle and a poblano pesto that is very original. The roasted pineapple salsa has also proved very popular at our house. We've tried it with the fiery turkey as suggested in the book, but it also works well with several of our own dishes -- at least for the more adventurous eaters in our circle.

Southwest Flavors is an ideal book for people who enjoy entertaining with food. If you have a creative flair in the kitchen, this book will inspire you to think outside the box and will open up whole new pathways for your own creations. If you have been stuck in a less-than-creative food rut, this book will take you places you've never been before. With a clean look and excellent food photography, this book is a joy to cook with.
