A Memorable Textbook

It's not often you remember the title (admittedly not a complicated one) and author of a textbook some 20 years after you read it, but I have. I have not read it recently, not since college in the early 80s, but have resolved to pick it up again. It is not merely for the student, but for the inquisitive mind. Whatever shortcomings one might imagine, I cannot recall a better, more complete textbook on any subject.

THIS IS THE BOOK FOR THOSE LOOKING FOR PEDAGOGICAL MATERIAL REGARDING VIRTUAL AND REMOTE TEAMS!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-06-28
This is for sure THE BOOK to open your mind and start developping yourself on the subject in a fun and intuitive way. I did order another book previouos to this one and have been doing an extensive research in the web on reviews on the subject as my customers (I am an organizational development consultant) are more and more asking for support on the subject of virtual and remote teams. Other books and approaches are ok, they provide you structure but most are still in the discovery process and using the already known patterns. They identify virtual teams as a matter of technology and not a matter of major change in how we approach work and human connections in this century. Ken Thompson goes beyond and takes you to look at best practices, there where you would not expect them. Virtual and remote teams is the top of the iceberg of the major change that we need to make in our current conception of teams and work

Bioteaming - disrupting established paradigms of the networked age
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-04-18
In an era where the forces of convergence are blurring and challenging the paradigms between businesses, customers, suppliers and industry ecosystems and where technology is leading non-linear change in the processes and dominant fabrics of society, there is a need for a holistic approach for anticipating and managing these external catalysts whilst concurrently fostering interaction, co-evolution and "emergence" between these agents operating in any given organizational, cultural, societal and/or economic system.

Ken Thompson in Bioteams delineates the extraction of the biological processes and principals underpinning nature's evolution to its application in human and organizational contexts through extrapolation and real life case studies. A very significant portion of the book is dedicated to expanding on the bioteam action `zones', rules and techniques, exemplifying the traits of collective leadership and transparency, with Thompson aligning the directive for the methodology to disrupt existing organizational DNA by designing, enabling and integrating the tenets of `living systems' theory (known as autopoiesis in the biological vernacular).

The inclusion of a dynamic bioteam evaluation scorecard together with associated techniques for team design and mobilization and the detailed case studies gives rise to the conclusion that if correctly embraced, bioteaming initiatives are strategic innovations that lead to the emergence of complex behavior using simple concepts of self-organisation. A must read for anyone serious about taking evolution seriously!!

Collaboration 2.0

Web 2.0 (wikis, blogs, social networking, SMS, chat,et al) give us a whole new world of connectivity. But in addition to dealing with the daily drudge of email, Web 2.0 also can overwhelm us with noise. Thompson breaks new ground by turning to nature and the field of biomimicry to both tame and harness the new world of connectivity in getting work done by building agile high performance teams. I like to think of it as Collaboration 2.0. Thompson gives us the "human protocols" needed for effective communication using the new media. I totally agree with Dr. Patrick Cannon's comment about the book, "Don't just read it, use it."

The biggest challenge businesses today face is unlearning what was successful in the industrial age and learning how to prosper in the network era.

Ken Thompson has written an important book, a guidebook to help companies move from vestiges of the industrial age to the efficiencies of the network era.

Companies are not machines; they are living organisms. Yesterday's organizational teams are giving way to organic, self-organizing bioteams. Drawing on lessons from biology, ecology, and the natural world, Thompson provides wise counsel for setting up and nurturing bioteams. Here's the bottom line:

"After 3.8 billion years of research and development, failures are fossils, and what surrounds us is the secret to survival. Like the viceroy butterfly imitating the monarch, we humans are imitating the best and brightest organisms in our habitat. We are learning, for instance, how to grow food like a prairie, build ceramics like an abalone, create color like a peacock, self-medicate like a chimp, compute like a cell, and run a business like a hickory forest."

Thompson believes that today's managements misunderstand the dynamic and living nature of the team as an entity over and above its membership.

History is. This book is about history. Few people (let alone christians) know the history of christian religious experience in the United States. This book provides a detailed and rare scholarly description of what happened during the August 1801 revival in Kentucky which has come to be known as the Cane Ridge revival. This book makes no attempt to provide a theological framework for revival, either for or against, nor the many experiences which may occur during and after revival. Rather, it is an honest and unbiased effort to give you a window to the past so you can see what happened and come to your own conclusions. I wish all books on revival were this well written!

The History of American Religion

Coming from a background that is neither of the Restoration Movement, nor of the Holiness movements that came from the Cane Ridge American revival period, I still found this book to be objective and interesting. Conkin, as previously stated by other reviewers, does an excellent job of presenting the materials in a way that is neither flattering, nor insulting to the frontier's people. Instead, he gives rational explanation for why they behave how they do and a peek into the 17th century religious mindset that would prompt the religious exercising. This is a book worth checking out, even according to this 20-something Bible College student.

Careful and objective

Review Date: 2003-06-11
Much has been written about the "objectivity question" in history. Can a historian put his biases aside and write an objective account of an historical event? Conkin's Cane Ridge demonstrates with what dignity and power a historian is able to treat a religious movement to which he has little spiritual or emotional attachment. Conkin has written a first-rate intellectual history that includes the best delineation of biblical Christianity by a non-believer that I've ever read.

Conkin's careful examination of the 1801 Kentucky revival demonstrates that the religious changes which began there had roots deep in devout, but staid, Presbyterianism. Conkin rejects the notion that the revival was simply an example of frontier backwardness and downplays the swooning and "barking" that continue to be the staple of college lecturers.

A few months ago, I was lucky enough to sit next to Dr. Crawford on a flight to SFO. He had just confirmed the date that this book was to be published. I asked him about the book and received the greatest one on one leadership training you could possibly imagine. Dr. Crawford is brilliantly insightful, very funny and his book is definitely worth your time.

The book is built on both his amazing experience and a tremendous amount of research. It's well organized; fast paced, and will provide you with the tools to be a better leader. I recommend it highly.

Featuring color paintings by Sioux artist S. D. Nelson (who was inspired by the traditional art style of the Plains Indians), Crazy Horse's Vision by Joseph Bruchac is the true story of a young Native American boy named Curly who witnessed fierce battles between his tribe of Lakota Indians and white settlers. Defying the custom of his people, Curly ran to the hills in search of a vision, and what he saw would transform him forever. Curly would then come to be known in history as the Sioux war chief Crazy Horse. An author's note following the story relates a summary of the life and death of this brave an unselfish leader. Crazy Horse's Vision is an outstanding picture book and a welcome addition to personal, school, and community library collections.

For depth of study combined with clarity of explanation, this is the top of the list of commentaries on John. Having read many commentaries on John, I can say without reservation that there is no better commentary (Protestant or Catholic) on the gospel of John than this one. The archeological and historical information is up to date and in enlightening such as in the detailed discussion concerning the chronological difficulties of when Jesus celebrated the Last Supper with his disciples. Rather than avoiding such questions or over-simplifying the question, the authors take those difficult questions head on and satisfy us with deep analysis providing the various options in resolving those questions. All the while, the discussion is within the boundaries of church doctrine and authority while still allowing for freedom of exploration.

Very highly recommended for group study or personal devotions.

Review Date: 2008-02-26
The Gospel of St. John holds so many treasures for the reader. Dr. Scott Hahn uses a clear, conversational tone in the wonderful footnotes of this Ignatius Study Bible Edition. Quotes from the Church Fathers, references to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, historical and cultural insights, and word studies help the Catholic reader understand the doctrines and events of John's Gospel in a manner true to the Magisterium.

If you are a little intimidated by studying the Bible because you aren't sure you will understand it according to Church teaching...if you are looking for deeper layers of insight into Sacred Scriptures--in short, if you, at any level of expertise, would love a wonderful resource, this study edition of John's Gospel is for you!

Includes an introduction to the Study Bible, an introduction and an outline to the Gospel, as well as topical essays such as "When Did Jesus Celebrate the Last Supper?" and study questions.

The definitive EKG workbook and CD-ROM
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2005-05-03
Good news. You can stop contemplating which EKG tutorial you want to purchase. Through med school, residency, and cardiology fellowship I had used 9 EKG texts/CD-ROMs prior to finding Dr.Rimmerman and Jain's . Once I came across this incredible CD-ROM and workbook, I used it exclusively in preparing for the EKG portion of the Cardiology boards.

At the exam, many others were discussing the difficulty and time constraints of the 2 hour EKG module. Solely with the help of Dr.Rimmerman's text, I was finished in half the allotted time. By following the text/CD ROM of Dr.Rimmerman, I scored well into the top decile. Dr.Rimmerman is to EKGs as Netter is to medical illustration.

This text/CD-ROM had to take years to assemble and painstakingly reviews ~630 EKGs in three sections that are well delineated according to difficulty. The reader evaluates the hardcopy EKG and then codes his/her answer into the CD ROM. This is followed by immediate, constructive feedback through multiple channels. First and foremost, there are colored arrows that are displayed over the computerized EKG. Then there is an easily interpreted paragraph or two describing all of the intricate details of the EKG. There are also hyperlinks to similar findings in other EKGs. It kills me that I was unaware of this text as a student or resident. Quite simply, if you want to learn EKGs this text is MANDATORY.

This book is without a doubt for all levels. Allied medical personnel, nursing students and graduates, and medical students all the way up to electrophysiologists have so much to gain from this text. Drs.Rimmerman and Jain, through their meticulous attention to detail, have created the definitive workbook/CD ROM for learning EKGs. I am forever grateful to their endeavor.

This is an excellent resource. I am completing my cardiology fellowship, and this book/CD has quickly improved my ECG reading skills. The adage "practice makes perfect" is unfortunately not true for interpreting ECGs. If you are incorrectly reading ECGs, then you reinforce errors. This program includes about 700 ECGs in three sections, ranging from the basics of normal sinus rhythm to acute myocardial infarctions with left bundle branch blocks. You simply enter your interpretation of the ECG, and the CD checks your conclusion. It points out salient ECG features, further describes the findings, and provides hyperlinks to related ECGs in order to reinforce teaching points. "Perfect practice makes perfect." When used correctly, this tutorial reinforces the subtleties of ECGs and will enhance your clinical skills.
I recommend this book not only for cardiologists, but also for nursing students, nurses, medical students, residents, and general internists. Interactive Electrocardiography is my primary reference for studying for the ECG sections of the cardiology boards, however, it was the tutorial I needed as a medical student. I give this program five out of five stars and think it is a priceless resource for learning to read ECGs.

This volume of articles and tidbits about the great Jackie Chan is definitely worth a read if not great. There are many fine insights into the man and the legend Jackie Chan, and indeed a lot of interesting photographs, which makes it so much the more enjoyable.

The format of the book, however, does not really agree with me. I don't like the article form, it seems cheap and mean. In my opinion it would have been better to write a uniform, coherent text based on the interviews and articles instead. The information is still there, it just seems a bit disorganized (which it really is not, it just seems that way).

It is still highly recommendable for all the information in there. Sure to please any fan.

This book is awesome! John Little's interview with Jackie Chan is worth the price alone. The photographs are the best, particularly the one of Jackie climbing a flag pole that looks like it has to be 50 feet off the ground! I learned so much about Jackie Chan, his martial arts training, his fitness methods and his personal philosophy. Having read all the other books on Jackie, I can easily say that this is - by far - the best! A must for everyone who loves his stunts or have been awed by his physical talent in martial art.

This book is a fabulous read. I couldn't put it down until I finished it. It is not a narrative, but rather a compiled series of interviews between the author(s) and Jackie Chan that have taken place over the past ten years or so. The chapters are split up into sections on his childhood, martial arts training, philosophy, health and fitness, career and film making, stunt coordinating etc. Each chapter has an introduction and then goes straight into an indepth interview with Jackie Chan himself! There is a small overview at the beginning of the book on his life (a mini "My Life in Action"!) and at the end a filmography and a chapter containing what the author considers are Jackie's ten best stunts in a short paragraph format. There is a treasure trove of pictures from Jackie's films (all black and white unfortunately), many not before seen. I consider this book belongs on the shelf with Jackie's autobiography as it is contains personal insights and comments from "The Man" himself. My respect for Jackie Chan, already high after reading "My Life in Action", has risen even higher. The man is phenomenal and makes the so-called "Hollywood Stars" shine rather pale in comparison. If the many who dismiss Jackie as "just an action actor" could only read this book, how their eyes would be opened! Highly recommended - a must read!
