El mundo implorante and the Cuban TraditionReview Date: 2002-03-28
For me, the most interesting chapters were those related to the "sensibilidad negra" and the "dialogo sobre la homosexualidad." Both were fine contributions to Cuban studies and add to the continuing study of themes like transgression, transculturation, and insularity (as a metaphor for incest in the insular tradition). This tradition includes the work by other well-known writers like Villaverde, Morua Delgado, Alejo Carpentier and Reynaldo Arenas.
In close, I would like to add that no critic will agree with all the points, observations, and perspectives presented in another's work, but all of the informed appraisals of Cruz-Malave's work have generated creative discussion. Those reviews can be found most reputable and most well-circulated academic journals in Latin American studies, see for example _Dispositio/n_. One reviewer characterized Cruz-Malave's recent work as "excellent." I would urge interested readers to consult the professional opinions of those reviews. This is a clearly a provacative piece.

Cruz's Maraca Shakes It UpReview Date: 2002-12-14
Perhaps Cruz's articulate manipulation of the audible world comes from his experience with speaking both Spanish and English; Spanish in the native Puerto Rico of his childhood, and English after his move to the United States. Cruz explores the duality of language by using both Spanish and English in his poetry, playfully experimenting with notions of a multi-lingual environment. He incorporates qualities of his Puerto Rican ethnicity and memories of his island home, as well as indigenous references, often expressed in Spanish, in poems describing the foreign American landscape and culture, giving the reader a glimpse of the surroundings seen from his open eyes and receptive mind. His poem "Los New Yorkers" exemplifies this technique. "Suena / I present you the tall skyscrapers / As merely huge palm trees with lights."
Cruz is sensitive to the rhythmic beat that pulses through the cultures of the environments he has experienced. Cruz's explanation of his poem "from New York Potpourri," Cruz captures the musical basis and creativity of his poetry. "The "Sides" are as if they were record sides, musical vignettes; they're all little observations of life in New York, the way it looks, the way it feels, the way in moves." Cruz's sensitivity to this movement of life captures the essence of his rhythmic, musical poetry.

Antonio de Nicolas
The writings are excellent, but the editing has an agendaReview Date: 2005-03-29
The editing seems very amateurish and irrational. de Nicolas bitterly complains about how English-language writers call the saint St John of the Cross, asserting that Juan de la Cruz is the only option and all else is "colonizing" by the English language. A foreword is provided by Seyyed Hossein Nasr which begins by lightly praising the poetry of St John of the Cross before hijacking the foreward to laud the supposed Islamic forebears of the saint. Instead of seeing the saint as one faithful to the Christian faith, as history would suggest, the author and Nasr would rather see him as a liberator from the perceived evils of "organised religion". The same Church which canonised him is attacked as a force trying to suppress his writings and influence. This a bizzare book.
The actual writings of St John of the Cross are certainly worth reading. Fortunately, the original Castilian Spanish of the poetry is presented with an English translation on the facing page, enabling the reader with even the slightest grasp of Castilian the opportunity to see the saint's ingenious use of language. The prose consists of excepts from the Spiritual Canticle, Ascent of Mount Carmel, and Dark Night, in English translation only.
St John of the Cross is one of the greatest spiritual writers in history, with enormous influence down to our time (especially on T.S. Eliot). His writings are very highly recommended. However, I would suggest getting them through a different collection than this. The author's agenda in attacking organised religion is unpleasant, and certainly doesn't provide the edification which those attracting to the saint's work are often looking for.

Descent From Heaven ReviewReview Date: 2007-05-10
An American corporate fixer incarcerated in Japan accused of murdering a model is the catalyst for the skilful and fast-moving investigation by his employer's hired agent that indicates he is withholding vital information and is guilty of something, but of what?
Increasingly attracted to his locally assigned female assistant, the agent is hampered by Police disinterest, but moves ever deeper into the world of sex-entertainment that draws businessmen and politicians into the clutches of the underworld and corrupt authority.
The agent's confrontational style clashes with the assistant's subtlety but does not hinder their growing personal relationship. They unravel the excesses of corporate behaviour and the mutual blackmail that underpins it, putting themselves and their star witness in danger as they seek the final piece of evidence that would free their client's man, pushing the tolerance of the key players to the limits. Discovering the partial truth behind the defendant's predicament, they face their adversaries in a violent encounter.
The aftermath completes the jigsaw and sees the employer abruptly terminating their services, abandoning the accused employee to the law to distance the corporation from the commercial and political fallout, and leaving the investigators to deal with their emotional involvement.
What makes this stylish and fast-moving story enjoyable and more importantly, credible, is the feeling that the writer did not entirely create it from just his imagination.

I am happy to have the NT in Spanish and will listen to it, for it is after all the content of the words and life of Christ that I am most concerned with, but I will always wish it could have been done with more feeling and better artistry.
