Arnaldo Cruz malave's "El primitivo implorante" is an intricate work of literary criticism that proposes challenging, provocative, and critically sound venues for reading Lezama Lima's corpus of writings a new. Cruz Malave's perspectives led me to reconsider the main arguments of MA thesis, "El 'Paradiso' de Jose Lezama Lima: Tierra Incognita de Ambrosia Caribehna." In sum, "El primitivo implorante" uncovered for me new meanings; a new world of possibilities underlying the density that characterizes Lezama's work. It is an excellent book.

El mundo implorante and the Cuban Tradition

Arnaldo Cruz-Malave's work on Cuban poet Jose Lezama Lima is a fine piece of work. _El mundo implorante_ offers a refreshing reading of Lezama's poetics that correctly frames the poet's work within the context of Cuban insularity. In light of the recent jargon-ridden monographs on Lezama's work, Cruz-Malave's approach is clear and demonstrates a broad understanding of Cuba and its literary tradition.

For me, the most interesting chapters were those related to the "sensibilidad negra" and the "dialogo sobre la homosexualidad." Both were fine contributions to Cuban studies and add to the continuing study of themes like transgression, transculturation, and insularity (as a metaphor for incest in the insular tradition). This tradition includes the work by other well-known writers like Villaverde, Morua Delgado, Alejo Carpentier and Reynaldo Arenas.

In close, I would like to add that no critic will agree with all the points, observations, and perspectives presented in another's work, but all of the informed appraisals of Cruz-Malave's work have generated creative discussion. Those reviews can be found most reputable and most well-circulated academic journals in Latin American studies, see for example _Dispositio/n_. One reviewer characterized Cruz-Malave's recent work as "excellent." I would urge interested readers to consult the professional opinions of those reviews. This is a clearly a provacative piece.

I couldn't agree more about the importance of Lezama Lima's body of writing. Cruz' study goes downhill, though, after reading the title page; thereafter, hokey phrases, redundant thoughts, and overall flawed structure made me put the book down. Don't bother with this study.

This book gave me a chance to establish trans- lation/publishing project in my company. About two month ago When a leading publishing company in Japan sent a 5-page translation trial test on MAPI with short due date, I bought this book, read it through to understand MAPI, and then submitted the translated document.About 2 weeks later, we enjoyed receiving a good evaluation result, and we could get a book to be translated/DTP edited for the first time. Now the translation is being in progress, and We are trying to lay foundation for setting up book publishing section in the company. Thank you very much for your book and author you assigned.

It may be difficult to find a copy of this book but it will be well worth the effort. This book helps to clarify what is an extremely convoluted subject. The examples should be loaded onto your disk for fast searching of code examples showing how to use various functions. Don't attempt any serious look at MAPI or Exchange without having this book.

I think its absolutely neccessary to be able to generate a printed version of a chapter or just even a single page. Disabeling printing completely make this CDROM a thing that i will only use if i really have to. Anyone ever really tried to learn something about a new topic reading PDF files on screen? The content may be good, but how will i ever really be able to judge it, while beeing unable to really study it.

I expected more from this book after reading the reviews in Amazon.com. This book was self-published and quite rightly so - no self-respecting publisher would touch it! Target audience seems to be 8th graders and the author has probably reached them. Anyone older will only groan at the juvenile writing style. If anyone edited this book it is not evident, but the author should acknowledge his limitations and seek help! I think the storyline is interesting, but I'll not be wasting my money on any more of this author's efforts.

I picked this up again and read it over the weekend. It's a GREAT book with very descriptive prose and a true surfer's perspective. It's got a surfing backdrop but the story line keeps you turning page after page.

I highly recommend this to both surfers and non-surfers alike!

Surfing passages were descriptive and exciting.

A Aga is not supposed to be an epic. It's anything but that. It does, however, make for an amusing - albeit shortlived - read. You must keep in mind that the young child who wrote this was ill at the time and probably slightly delirious. Don't read it if you're looking for direction in your life; read it if you want a good, lighthearted laugh.

Absolutely amazing.

I read this book in a bookstore in about one minute. It's all of 2 inches high by 1 inch wide and has no more than 20 pages. "A Aga" is the story of a guy who goes hunting, or something like that; I honestly couldn't tell. Every page has an incomprehensible scribble, followed by a description of what it represents. All are along the lines of "Hunting deer" or "They killed a bad man." Get the idea? Please avoid this book, unless you really love children and drawings by them.

Like all of the Fonolibro audio books that I've listened to, 'La Dama de Las Camelias' has top notch narration and voice acting, and great production values. Unfortunately, unlike some of their other CD's, the story this is based on is excruciatingly boring. If you want to practice your Spanish and listen to a decent story in the process, I'd recommend 'Harry Potter Y La Piedra Filosofal' or Fonolibro's 'Viaje Al Centro de la Tierra,' and 'El Conde de Monte Cristo.'

Cruz's Maraca Shakes It Up
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2002-12-14
Poetry allows syllables to resound in silence, sentences to fall into patterns, both visually and audibly, creating a rhythm out of language, giving speech a song. Victor Hernández Cruz's poems make Maraca: New and Selected Poems 1965-2000 shake through a sampling of the poet's work from his teenage years to his most recent. His poems reflect an understanding of sound, the sound of language off the tongue, and the capturing and communication of sounds through a verbal medium.
Perhaps Cruz's articulate manipulation of the audible world comes from his experience with speaking both Spanish and English; Spanish in the native Puerto Rico of his childhood, and English after his move to the United States. Cruz explores the duality of language by using both Spanish and English in his poetry, playfully experimenting with notions of a multi-lingual environment. He incorporates qualities of his Puerto Rican ethnicity and memories of his island home, as well as indigenous references, often expressed in Spanish, in poems describing the foreign American landscape and culture, giving the reader a glimpse of the surroundings seen from his open eyes and receptive mind. His poem "Los New Yorkers" exemplifies this technique. "Suena / I present you the tall skyscrapers / As merely huge palm trees with lights."
Cruz is sensitive to the rhythmic beat that pulses through the cultures of the environments he has experienced. Cruz's explanation of his poem "from New York Potpourri," Cruz captures the musical basis and creativity of his poetry. "The "Sides" are as if they were record sides, musical vignettes; they're all little observations of life in New York, the way it looks, the way it feels, the way in moves." Cruz's sensitivity to this movement of life captures the essence of his rhythmic, musical poetry.

Discovering Victor Hernandez Cruz's "Maraca: New and Selected Poems 1965-2000" on a book shelf is like strolling into a record store and finding a "Best of" album by Jimi Hendrix. Because Cruz, like Hendrix, is a revolutionary in his chosen art-both in his idiom of subject matter, as well as his use of poetic style. It's no coincidence I use an analogy of comparing this book to a record, or this poet to a musician. Cruz sings in much of the poems, such as when he lets off, "let him kill that/ drum if he wants to/ go ahead/ break it in half/ make talk/ make talk" in the poem "Out in the World." But in addition to the music, Cruz doesn't neglect his Puerto Rican roots and his fluency in Spanish. He peppers many poems with Spanish words and phrases, and offers up several poems written strictly in Spanish. However, these too play off the page at 33rpm, such as in the poem "The Sound of Love," which starts, "San pronto no se wis windos can el claus de la/ mañananana." An appreciator of poetry or music can simply say the words aloud and hear the inherent tune as the mouth forms the sounds of the poet and balladeer. In his subtle way, Cruz takes a political stance on everything in his existence, yet neither stands as an outsider nor forces his reader to choose a particular position. Instead, we are all natives of this poetic landscape while Cruz; "a true poet aiming/ poems & watching things/ fall to the ground" spins us through a text that deserves several listens. As he concludes in the poem "Today Is a Great Day of Joy," all readers will soon agree, "it is a great day."

Organized approach to life, poetry and prose tracing the spiritual journey made by St. John. Life details are summarized into a chronology. The original Spanish and English translation of famous poems such as "Dark Night" are included. The prose focuses on the Saint's explaination of the poems and omits portions written to address the Inquisition.

In answer to Culver's review I am surprised at his effort to turn a complex time in history into a veridical, simple one. Juan de la Cruz is the proper Spanish name, not John of the Cross, and the reasons for the distinction are given in the book. To what Christianity does Culver refer, Protestant, Catholic? This was the time of the Reformation and Counter Reformation, of Catholics killing Protestants and viceversa in the name of "their" Christianity. Yes, the Saint influenced T.S Eliot, the book shows T.S. Eliot plegiarized the Saint. The reason I wrote the book and translated the Saint's prose and poetry is because the English translations I had come across were not accurate or faithful to the Saints intentions, not even to his grammatical ones. It is not often that a Castilian can translate into English, and this is my advantage, and hopefully my service to the reader. And by the way, the same Church that canonized him had the Inquisition investigating him up to the eve of his canonization together with those other Spanish mystics Teresa de Avila and Ignatius de Loyola, founder of the Jesuits.
Peace.

The writings are excellent, but the editing has an agenda

ST JOHN OF THE CROSS: Alchemist of the Soul is a collection by Antonio T. de Nicolas of writings by the 16th-century Spanish mystic, along with a brief biographical sketch.

The editing seems very amateurish and irrational. de Nicolas bitterly complains about how English-language writers call the saint St John of the Cross, asserting that Juan de la Cruz is the only option and all else is "colonizing" by the English language. A foreword is provided by Seyyed Hossein Nasr which begins by lightly praising the poetry of St John of the Cross before hijacking the foreward to laud the supposed Islamic forebears of the saint. Instead of seeing the saint as one faithful to the Christian faith, as history would suggest, the author and Nasr would rather see him as a liberator from the perceived evils of "organised religion". The same Church which canonised him is attacked as a force trying to suppress his writings and influence. This a bizzare book.

The actual writings of St John of the Cross are certainly worth reading. Fortunately, the original Castilian Spanish of the poetry is presented with an English translation on the facing page, enabling the reader with even the slightest grasp of Castilian the opportunity to see the saint's ingenious use of language. The prose consists of excepts from the Spiritual Canticle, Ascent of Mount Carmel, and Dark Night, in English translation only.

St John of the Cross is one of the greatest spiritual writers in history, with enormous influence down to our time (especially on T.S. Eliot). His writings are very highly recommended. However, I would suggest getting them through a different collection than this. The author's agenda in attacking organised religion is unpleasant, and certainly doesn't provide the edification which those attracting to the saint's work are often looking for.

When foreign corporate ambition meets the protectionist officialdom of modern industrial Japan and the stakes are high, then dramatic consequences ensue. Written with an absolute economy of words, this story roars through interweaving sub-plots, crystallizing the diverse characters with ease, and using Japanese expressions to better illuminate the background and events.
An American corporate fixer incarcerated in Japan accused of murdering a model is the catalyst for the skilful and fast-moving investigation by his employer's hired agent that indicates he is withholding vital information and is guilty of something, but of what?
Increasingly attracted to his locally assigned female assistant, the agent is hampered by Police disinterest, but moves ever deeper into the world of sex-entertainment that draws businessmen and politicians into the clutches of the underworld and corrupt authority.
The agent's confrontational style clashes with the assistant's subtlety but does not hinder their growing personal relationship. They unravel the excesses of corporate behaviour and the mutual blackmail that underpins it, putting themselves and their star witness in danger as they seek the final piece of evidence that would free their client's man, pushing the tolerance of the key players to the limits. Discovering the partial truth behind the defendant's predicament, they face their adversaries in a violent encounter.
The aftermath completes the jigsaw and sees the employer abruptly terminating their services, abandoning the accused employee to the law to distance the corporation from the commercial and political fallout, and leaving the investigators to deal with their emotional involvement.
What makes this stylish and fast-moving story enjoyable and more importantly, credible, is the feeling that the writer did not entirely create it from just his imagination.

While the beautiful the guitar music is a bit too loud and intrusive, the narration of the NIV Nuevo Testamento in modern Spanish is excellent. I have listened to it about 100 times, and I find it powerful and uplifting every time I listen to it. I wish I could have the chance to listen to the whole NIV Bible narrated by Roberto Cruz, with a softer background guitar music.

What prompted me to order this particular version of the New Testament in Spanish on Audio Cassette was the statement in the publisher's review that it was accompanied by Spanish guitar music. Also, I was looking for a new translation, that would add variety to my Bible reading, since I currently use the REINA-VALERA Spanish translation of the Bible. While the quality of the recording is excellent, the reading is, in my opinion, uninspired, and rushed. I was not looking for a dramatized version, as I believe the life and words of Christ are best read as narration, not as drama, but I do believe more feeling on the part of the narrator is called for than what is found here. The music, rather than complimenting certian passages and moods (not set by the narrator in this case, although the subject matter certainly would provide for different moods) is intrusive and too loud. Rather than being very much in the background, it competes with the narration and is a constant companion to the narrator, rather than an occasional emotive response or embellishment. This was a novel idea, that of having flamenco guitar music to accompany a reading of the Bible in Spanish. It was a great opportunity to do something beautiful, that falls short. Perhaps it can be improved upon in the future. The packaging leaves much to be desired as well. The twelve tapes come in one small cardboard box. I ordered the New Testament in Italian elsewhere and it came in an attractive album case at no more cost to me than these.

I am happy to have the NT in Spanish and will listen to it, for it is after all the content of the words and life of Christ that I am most concerned with, but I will always wish it could have been done with more feeling and better artistry.

The book itself contains nice layouts, plenty of accompanying text to reflect the designers it features, and nice to impressive photography that also reflects the designers' points of view. Most of the photos' visual impact comes from the (edgy) color and textile combinations used (including make-up affects); however, I wished it would've contained bolder layouts, but I guess this is what's to be expected of a paperback, slightly smaller footprint fashion book as I'm partial to the larger size books that can really wow you with one page full of vibrant color topped with a micro or macro aspect. The models were high fashion, runway model types wearing very creative pieces throughout the book but also expect lots of contextural writing. Note that I didn't actually read the book but scanned through the pics and some representative writings only for a minute because I was buying it as a gift for my high school grad niece who's interested in art school. I was more interested in how the visual impression of the photos would appeal to her. I was excited and thought it'd be good to excellent for her EXCEPT and unfortunately for one darn little but questionable photo! It was a frontal photo of a group of runway models wearing one featured designer's fashion (statement) in which one model was completely nude from the neck down and the other was nude from the waiste down (they were wearing "designer-modified" middle eastern type traditional women's clothing). I'm not a prude, and I probably should've known better via the fashion world perspective on the human body as art, but I certainly don't want my niece's parents to remember me as the aunt who unwittingly gave their daughter a book containing this particular photo. Had it not been a gift and for myself, I probably would've been fine with the book. So I'm returning it and felt the need to FYI other potential buyers. There was another tiny photo of a model's "behind" dressed in ethereal textile but it was done nicely and that I could've lived with.
