Cruz Books

I bought these for three new students who cannot yet speak English. Thier literature class will be reading the story in a few weeks. Using this version, the students can participate.

The Catholic Church offers many blessings, the sacrements being one of the most significant. But coupled along with that are the global children of the Church and the vast shining examples of good that they not only represent but advocate. Over the past few years, the Catholic Church has had to acknowledge its serious shortcomings in relation to the horrific sex scandal, among other things. The hierarchy was looked upon-and unfortunately to a certain degree still is-with scorn and jaded cynicism, and any chance of genuine rectification seemed almost impossible. It appeared to be an institution that was floundering in a sea of mistrust and anger, and rightfully so, especially in fully comprehending what happened to the victims. Along with the religious was the devout laity who took the helm and helped to usher in a deeper understanding of not humanism, per se, but of the true, palpable manifestation of faith and of the Divine gift that it really was and is. They, the laity and religious did not say that the doctrine of the Church was unsound and unstable, but rather, it was the varied manipulative and disordered practitioners of the dogma(s) that were. It was the foreknowledge and secretiveness that only added fuel to the fire. So much turmoil and havoc on so many. Hence, it was a real joy to read Saintly Men of Modern Times by Joan Cruz Carroll, because in this biographical work she illustrates the vital importance played by lay Catholics and how their holy essence of living out the Gospel has redefined, refined and added to the totality of the Catholic Church. When one thinks of sainthood, one normally thinks of that honor being afforded only to mystics, monks, priests and nuns and so forth. Yet, Pope John Paul II changed all that, and Carroll's book details in picturesque detail the lives of these men who had or are on their way to affording the honor of the alter. And some of the examples are quite startling: a former alcoholic (Matt Talbot), a former satanic priest (Bartolo Long) to medical doctors (Joseph Moscati and Ladislaus Batthyany-Strattmann) or just everyday holy blue-collar joes (Franz Jagerstatter and Dominic Cesari). A reader will be able to identify with any number of examples profiled in this book, and therein is where the beauty lies, in the underlying truth of the beauty of confession, the Holy Eucharist, the Mass, the rosary, et cetera. These men, married, single, martyred, lived out their baptism in the truest sense of the word, making the universal call to holiness an integral part of their identity. Men to stand with priests.

Just wanted to thank you for the pregnancy workout cards...I LOVE them! I used them for the first time last night at the gym. I like how easy they are to use, the clear direction presented of the exercise to be executed and the pictures on each card for body placement, and the helpful tips on what to try to avoid. I like the little lanyard that it comes with so I don't have to bring the whole box with me, just the cards that I need for that workout. I love them!

Santa Cruz Chili & Spice Co. Cookbook is one of ten chili books I refer to when I want to make chili differently than the two recipes I usually use. We have chili a lot in our house and both my Dad and my Mama have their favorite ways of cooking it. I grew up with their recipes and I have documented them in one of my "Amazon So You'd Like to Guides" and I hope you take a look at it. Both recipes are delicious, but when you've had them as often as I've had 'em, you sort of yearn for something a bit different. So, once a week, usually on Saturdays, I break out these ten books and search for a chili recipe I either haven't tried, or one I haven't made in a long time. Of course, like all cooks, I fudge a bit with the ingredients, but not all that much. I like to stick pretty close to the recipes, at least the first few times I make it, so I can get an idea of what the writer/recipe maker had intended.

And let me tell you, you'd be surprised at the subtleties there are in a chili recipe. As they say, no two chile recipes were created equal, but the recipes in this Spicy Chili book have never let me down. I've got a lot of chili books, have tried a lot of recipes over the years, but the recipes here, like the recipes in my other nine fave books, have been consistently good. You can't go wrong with this book.

Margaret Koch did a superb job of researching her material. This book is hugely informative. But be warned! You'll want to spend all your free time bumming around Santa Cruz County and checking out all the historical spots! :-)

The Santa Cruz Haggadah brought a meaning to our Passover Seder that we had never had before. It took an ancient story and made it alive for us today. The humor it brought to the service kept the children involved and interested, and certain portions brought tears to the eyes of the adult participants. It is a joyous and insightful way to look inside of ourselves and celebrate a beautiful holiday.

This book is an outstanding classic of its genre. It defines a specific type of sculpture in the Santa Cruz Islands. Identifies all the known examples in museums, private collections etc. Discusses how these statues were traditionally used in early Solomon Islands religion, as well as who collected these sculptures. Its also includes a CD of photos of daily life in the Santa Cruz Islands. This was William Davenports last work before his death and it stands as as testiment to the depth of his research. I would highly recommend it.

I love having a little book at hand which not only tells me how far I've run, but gives tips on where to park, best times to run on certain trails, local races, city runs, and trail runs. It really has it all!

I've lived and worked in Santa Cruz for 7 years, and grew up coming here from Los Gatos frequently, but I've never explored so much of Santa Cruz before having this book. If you're a runner, or walker and live in Santa Cruz, or are planning to vacation there, get this book!

Nicky Cruz has put together stories from real people, and his own background about the devil and his ways. From the obvious to the subtle he reveals how Satan works to enter our lives and entrap us. A must read for any who have or are involved in the occult, witchcraft, phsycic powers, etc.
