A Brilliant WWII Romnace

This novel tells the amazing story of two Americans who fight alongside the French Resistance during World War Two. It is brilliantly crafted with intricate believable characters who confront the adversities of war with true human desires and frailties. I have not read a true World War Two romance of this caliber since I finished my first reading of Winds of War and War and Remembrance. Anyone purchasing this book will not be disappointed; in fact, I'd dare say that they will be delighted!

A Must Read for Anyone Interested in American History
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2004-05-06
This fascinating first-hand account describes life as a young Japanese-American boy imprisoned during WWII in the American internment camps. This book covers Mr. Nakagawa's experiences of May 1942 through October 1945--from the first day of his relocation to the last day of his imprisonment at age thirteen. Mr. Nakagawa writes about each camp where he and his family were relocated: Pinedale, Tule Lake, and Heart Mountain. (The camp names alone are strangely surreal and somehow revealing of this sad era in American history.)

Yet while the period itself is a sad one, Mr. Nakagawa's story, as told through the eyes of his childhood self, remains uplifting. The writing is impeccably clear and non-filtered; unlike many memoirs that lose themselves in nonessential meanderings, The Cross on Castle Rock focuses on the matter at hand--how a child copes in dire straits. Mr. Nakagawa is too graceful to dwell on the darker matters, instead focusing on the daily routines of camp life. This is what makes the story so heart wrenching.

The detail used to describe games he and other children played in the camps is amazing. "The Ring Game" and "Poison" are two marble games explained so well one can't help but feel you're there watching the children play.

The Cross on Castle Rock, however, is not all child's play. Mr. Nakagawa touches on the difficulties of camp life--family separations, property loss, and conflicts within the Japanese American Citizen's League (JACL). Sufficient background on Pearl Harbor, Executive Order 9066, President Roosevelt, General DeWitt, No-No Boys, agricultural competition in California, and the general climate of that period are provided so that we have the historical perspective to understand the significance of young George's experiences.

In short, this book is highly recommended for those studying American history, Asian-American history, the internment camps of Japanese Americans, or autobiographies in general. Readers are guaranteed an enriching experience that, like I, will want to share with others.

Attention Basketball Coaches at Every Level

If you are the coach of your child's team or in charge of a basketball league, you must read this book. I have been coaching my son's basketball team for 4 years and I wish I had this book in the beginning. It helps coaches and parents understand what to expect from their kids at various ages and how to teach them the fundamentals of basketball and how to adjust the training as the players get older, stronger, and more complete basketball players. This is an excellent resource.

Alexandra Harper is working on her Ph.D. in Spanish when an editor for Newsmakers Magazine, who had been at the college giving a lecture, comes by the Spanish Department to visit an old friend. When he learns that Alex is doing her dissertation on the famous author Camila Zavala he, and her departmental advisor, think it would be a good idea if she wrote an article on Ms. Zavala for the magazine.

Unknown to anyone outside her family Alex had been corresponding with the author, but a year ago the letters stopped and Alex has also noticed that the author's last couple of books are written differently than Camilia's usual style. So she decides to go to Ecuador and interview the author in person and maybe even find out why she stopped writing.

However, when she gets there she is met by Vicente Serrano, the good looking son of a friend of her fathers. Vicente tells Alex he will help her find Camila, but in reality he does everything he possibly can to thwart her efforts. However the harder he tries to keep her from finding out the author's secret and her true identity, the harder Alex tries.

Ms. Denton is actually the pen name of two fine writers, Carolyn Hake and Jeanie Lambright. Together, these women have written a wonderful romance, full of both mystery and suspense. I was on tetherhooks, pins and needles and the edge of my seat right up till the last page of this delicious page turner. This is most definitely a five star romance that I know you'll love.

A whole purse set!

Review Date: 2007-05-15
What do you find in a gal's purse? Why her glasses case, cel phone, check book, address book and credit cards. What do all of these have to do with this book? Why you can make a whole ensemble!! Make one or all of these projects and they are easy as they are made from felted wool or as we called in 50 years ago FELT.

With no edges to worry about turning under to prevent raveling, they go together quickly and easily. The assembly instructions contain graphics which are a blessing to those of us who are visual people. The graphs for each design comes with a color photo of what it will look like when done and some of the graphs themselves have color outlines around the areas that have the same color which other graphs have red lines defining each section. Either way, they are large enough to see without a magnifying glass. (I have to say I am partial to the graphs that have the color!)

The cell phone holder is something that I plan to make as Christmas presents while I just might find time to make myself a whole ensemble! Which ever project(s) you decide to do, the book will be a wonderful guide to get you there.

Jan Eaton draws upon her many years of needlework experience to share her considerable expertise in Cross Stitch, the newest entry in The Crowood Press "The Art of Crafts" series. Readers are provided with a comprehensive, profusely illustrated, practical guide to the craft of the Cross Stitch. In addition to a history of cross stitch embroidery, Cross Stitch offers the needlecrafter with fifteen beautiful projects and is embellished with a chapter devoted to "Finishing Touches". Cross Stitch is further enhanced with a suggested list of additional readings, a listing of useful addresses, and an index. Cross Stitch is a thoroughly "user friendly" and much appreciated contribution to the needlecraft instruction and reference shelf.
