This book made even me want to join a rock group. The story of Janis' escape from her boring existence and subsequent capultation to fame is a modern fairy tale of escaping the grind. This combined with Janis' pain and confusion in her relationship with her mother and her adoption of Christie's depressed mother made this book one of my all-time favorities..even at age 19 :()

My mom loves cross-stitching and she has this one. I've borrowed this book from my mom last summer, and I already completed 5 designs from this book! The designs range from simple ones to a-little- bit-complex ones. It's really exciting to do it yourself!

A wonderful variety of Santa's to cross stitch! The very best of the Christmas Remembered series by Leisure Arts. My personal favorite: "Santa's Workshop". This book will bring back memeories of childhood to everyone who reads it and the projects will be treasures to hand down through the generations.

Personnally, as a teen, i loved Noughts and Crosses. It's my favorite book to date and Checkmate really ended the trilogy on a good note. It was great, though i suggest to not read this one first and really start with the first one (Noughts and Crosses). I do think the whole trilogy really goes deep and the whole series makes an amazing gift for a teen (not for younger children). Also, Checkmate makes you read at the tip of your page and always looking for an answer (which you do find by the way, this is not a loose-end book). Again, I loved it...i loved the whole series!

I moved to Manhattan two years ago to begin my first post-collegiate job. I ran competitively in college and thought that running would be the easiest, not to mention most convenient, way to stay in shape once I had entered the working world. However, I ran into one problem...well, maybe two, or three, or four. It's dark before work and it's dark after work. It's too cold, too hot, and/or too cozy under my covers. Without my college teammates expecting me at practice, the motivation to get out and run was less than lacking. Walking past the Barnes and Noble in Lincoln square, I noticed a copy of The Chelsea Piers Fitness Solution in the window. I had heard of Chelsea Piers, but never really took the time to explore its offerings. So, I went into Barnes and Noble and browsed through the book. Needless to say, I bought a copy. I've also done some research on the Chelsea Piers website to find classes for the sports that seem to best match my personality and found out that the Field House at Chelsea Piers offers evening adult gymnastics and rock-climbing classes for all levels. So, it turns out you don't have to be a kid to enjoy exercise and make physical fitness fun! I definitely recommend this book for anyone who's sick of the treadmill and is ready for a change to make this year's New Year's resolution stick.

Trancultural studies of childbirth that span the developed and developing world are rare as gold dust, and this one is the brand leader. The reader is gripped by the stories from beginning to end and the reflections of the author on women's health and wellbeing are illuminating.

10 stars! I recently purchased a used copy of this book since it is sadly out of print and just finished reading it. It was RIVETING. The story of "JoAnn's" childhood is told in alternating chapters between her writings and her therapist's. Instead of focusing on the horrors of JoAnn's childhood, and there were many, the story instead focuses on what saved JoAnn. It is also not about a mushy relationship between therapist and client, rather the story of an extraordinary woman who overcomes unbearable childhood conditions to grow up to be a woman who completely repressed her childhood in order to survive it. When she sets out to work on herself in therapy, what she uncovers is spellbinding. This is not the story of how a gifted and extraordinarily caring therapist drew a woman out of her shell, but rather the story of a gifted and motivated client who was determined to do all the hard work herself to overcome and remember her past. There is no other book like this that I have come across that focuses more on the client being the real hero of the story. A BIG THANK YOU to the therapist for writing JoAnn's story down. It has SO MUCH to share!!
I read nearly every book on childhood abuse that's out there and then I give the books away when I'm done reading them. I'm keeping this one though. This one is a piece of literature. Excellent writing. INCREDIBLE story. (Made into a movie called the Secret Path with Della Reese, I just learned after googling the author).

Wars are fought to build better futures for children?

Do you wonder how compassion develops in youth today? Will reading about the real experiences of children during WW2 give those of a younger generation a sense of the damage War can do to the individual psyche? "Children & War" by author Robin Cross was originally published in Britain in 1994. The many ways in which children were affected by wartime conditions are surveyed: aiding the resistance movement, being hidden from the Gestapo, starving in many countries. suffering the cruelties of the Atomic Age. Excellent graphics are used throughout. The last chapter was possibly an after-thought inserted for U.S. publication. Its final paragraph seems to focus on teenagers in the U.S. who wore "zoot suits"! Even with the draft distributing the pain of military service more 'equally' the children in this country were almost totally removed from reality except when a family member or close friend was killed.
Japanese-Americans lost their homes, precious self-respect & hopes for the future but most other children lived in innocence - - maybe until the U.S. ushered in even greater atrocities, and Americans felt a deep, broad sense of despair, and some even shame. Before the book's introduction the author states: "All sides in the war claimed to be trying to build a better future for their children" - - that might be the last time such a claim was made in print? There are governments engaged in conflicts presumably so that other countries can experience a democratic way of life. Yet on the way to that goal children are forced to fight, are maimed and/or killed. Where are the studies that could inform us of the emotional damage done? And where is evidence that anyone has been allowed to grieve for the horrendous, indescribable insults to body & mind that any war causes? Leaders use all kinds of justification for War. How many of the reasons given come anywhere near being honest? In which case, how can we make a connection between honesty and the democratic way of life envisioned?
This is a "blockbuster book" - - Think of adult heads as blocks of wood in a stubborn mold , resistant to trying peaceful solutions, perhaps even resisting the formation of intergenerational study groups where Peace could be discussed? Reviewer mcHaiku hopes that many will read "Children & War" and agree that it is an important book that reminds us that War is not a glorious adventure for children but has many cruel after-effects, as with adults. Study history, but spend "equal time" working for a better world.
