A book like this should have come out long ago! When I was taking my "Vulnerable Populations" course in my BSN program we did not even have a textbook. Now nursing students can benefit from the experiences and research in this book.

This movie was excellent, I would encourage church leaders to bring this to one of their study classes. It makes one reflect on our walk with God and ask ourselves "Are we doing our best to make a difference in the lives of others?" People of all ages can be blessed by this movie and be a blessing to others because of it!

This book has a bit of everything, large designs, small designs. Easy more difficult. It has realistic cats and a few cartoom cats. I copy the patterns to make the more difficult ones to follow, but other than that I really enjoy these cats!

I experienced a series of emotions while reading this book. At one moment I found myself laughing and the next, crying. I expecially found the stories of what inspired each poem insightful. I've earmarked many favorites and each time I go back and reread them, new meaning is found in them each time. This book is a must have and worth sharing with the ones you love!

Of all of the books I've read over the years, perhaps the most influencial book in my life next to the Bible is The Centrality of the Cross. I would highly recomend this book if you're truly serious about living your faith. This book covers the very essence of true dicipleship; and outlines its costs as well. The subject is thouroughly and wonderfully discussed in each of the crosses many facets. The Centrality of the Cross is not a quick read. Each page is packed with challenging material to stretch your faith. It is a book that you will read again and again. Each time you will gain more from it. This book, like the Bible, never grows old.

Challenges of Public Higher Education in the Hisp. Caribbean

This book examines state policy and higher educational reform in Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico. The dearth of attention to the postsecondary experience of the Spanish-speaking Caribbean makes this a very special contribution to the literature in the field, where present literature focuses primarily on Central and Latin America, the larger context of globalization, or specific issues like financing, equity, and quality. The authors weigh variables of economic environments, political institutions, and culture as they analyze the evolution of higher educational policy and post-secondary institutional change. Their analyses at once show the commonality of problems across Caribbean national boundaries, and illuminate the ways in which processes of educational change and reform differ between the Dominican Republic, Cuba, and Puerto Rico.
The authors conclude that the convergence of higher education trends and reforms in Puerto Rico, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic are not serendipitous (including the shared experience of "brain drain" emigration to the continental United States), underscoring the need for Caribbean post-secondary institutions and their respective states to explore new linkages and deepen existing transnational interconnectedness. Numerous barriers and challenges remain; the book ends with an extensive discussion of future agendas in higher education and public policy on these islands and in New York City.

Recommended reading for students of contemporary economics

Review Date: 2003-12-12
Collaboratively compiled and expertly co-edited by Neil Gilbert (Chernin Professor of Social Services and Social Welfare, University of California - Berkeley) and Rebecca A. Van Voorhis (Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology and Social Services, California State University - Hayward), Changing Patterns Of Social Protection is a scholarly selection of in-depth essays by learned authors concerning social welfare policies. These are governmental policies which have evolved over time and been rethought considerably amidst the aging of the population, changes in family structures, the tremendous forces of globalization, pressures from immigration, as well as other dynamic forces in the modern world. A thoughtful assessment of socioeconomic needs and influences, observing the necessity of creating balance between selfishness and necessity for benefits as well as the lessons of experience offered by various nations, Changing Patterns Of Social Protection is the ninth volume in the "International Social Security Series" and very highly recommended reading for students of contemporary economics and social welfare issues.

Great in depth analysis of current international practice!!
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 1999-04-20
Interesting overview of contempory practice of policy analysis and development of vocational education and training in Europe, Africa, America and Asia. The international community of vocational educators should welcome this new work since it will inform debate of current issues and future trends. The Scottish editorial team of Finlay, from the Scottish School of Further Education at the University of Strathclyde, Niven, President Emeritus of the International Vocational Education and Training Association and Young, Director of Lifelong Learning at the Glasgow Development Agency are well apprised of international developments. Niven is well known for his contributions to IVETA's international conferences and publications. The illuminative research of Niven and Finlay funded by the Advisory Scottish Council for Education and Training Targets, which underpinned much of the work and is referred to in the work, presents new insights into the achievement of consensus in different international contexts. The research was grounded in an expert seminar attended by prominent researchers from different countries e.g. Dar-chin Rau from Taiwan, Betsy Brand from the USA, Olli Rati from Finland, Jim Gleason from Ireland, Iain Bellis from South Africa, Johnny Sung from Singapore and Willi Brandt from Germany. The experts report on how consensus is reached within their countries, and the closing chapter identifies key principles which could have wide application. The book gives a highly readable global perspective on the challenges faced by vocational education and training in recent years. It is a welcome addition to the literature of international education and training and is a must for post-graduate students of comparative education.
