Jack's Back!!

Jack Collins is back. This story is told in the same manner as "A Matter of Faith" and continues to be an interesting presentation. We find out more about how Jack's extended family works and how they interact with each other in this one. There is danger and mystery enough in this story and how each person reacts to it. This story is in many ways about everyone but Jack. Everything that happens to them takes place because they either know Jack or are related to him. Of course, it wouldn't be a Jack Collins novel without his presence as the unifying character. Once again, the book was very hard to put down until I found out how things worked out for them all. Mr. Rozhon has captured a style and manner of storytelling that I find compelling. Looking forward to the next one.

This is a successor to A MATTER OF FAITH, about a private investigator and his blended family. This is even better than the first book! Four women having a bad day is a vast understatement. The manner in which these women deal with their misfortunes is dazzling and much to be admired. The writer continues to deeply personalize the story with several viewpoints, which keeps the interest level very high. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves riveting stories about exceptional people!

I am a Latino, Mexican American, male femenisth. I read this book for my Women Studies minor family course named The Family in Cal State Dominguez. I really recomend this book to all the people that really want to know the true history of the human family and how it has been changing and why it will always will change... at the same time you will start to see that gender roles were never started at the beggining of humanity...that gender roles were created in diffrent cultures at the hurticultural stage of society and were very strong at the agregarian stage... but right now in industrial societys gender roles are becoming more simmilar little by litlle to be able to survive... I can tell you more about this book...but you need to read it and I really recomended.

Marx Meets His Match

Peter Kreeft is professional philosopher, a prolific author, and an avid Christian apologist. He has written a number of books using the Socratic method of dialogue and questioning to stimulate thought, correct fuzzy thinking, and challenge our unexamined presuppositions.

He is now in the midst of a new series of volumes, entitled Socrates Meets.... The series is designed to help introduce the reader to the major thinkers and their writings. In this book we have Kreeft (via Socrates) analyse and dissect The Communist Manifesto.

This book, of course, belongs to that group of books which almost everyone knows about but very few people have actually read. Works by Darwin and Freud could also be mentioned (and one suspects that Kreeft has these authors in the pipeline as well).

So it is quite important that someone who actually knows these Great Books quite well can make them accessible and understandable to the average layperson. These volumes do a very good job of distilling the contents and ideas of the Great Books, making them easy to understand and digest. The format of a debate or dialogue between Socrates and his antagonist makes for enjoyable and illuminating reading.

Indeed, the format makes the book fun while helping the reader discover discerning and penetrating insights into the subject of the debate. By uniting a Christian worldview with the probing Socratic method, Kreeft is able to clarify an opponent's position, and point out the inconsistencies and fallacies therein. He is then in a position to show the superior claims of the Judeo-Christian position, over against that found in their works.

This volume applies solid logic and the timeless truths of the Judeo-Christian tradition to one of the most influential of modern thinkers. It makes for a great introduction to this thinker, as well as an incisive critique of his thoughts. One can only look forward to future volumes in this excellent series.

Karl's Glaring Mistake...

After having approached the economic arguments against socialism (and its subordinate -isms like Marx-, Commun-, Naz-, Lenin-, Mao-, etc.) from the perspectives of Adam Smith, Ludwig von Mises, Thomas Sowell, and most especially Friedrich Hayek, it didn't take much to be convinced that Marx was, well, just plain wrong. We have the empirical evidence of something like 80 years of actual practice to point to, to assess, and from which to draw conclusions.

Not until I read Prof. Kreeft's work did I come to comprehend the more important question: *why Marx was wrong*. Socialism was not just hampered by a flawed execution ("everyone" says that Russia should not have been the first nation to try socialism), but fundamentally crippled by a flawed premise. And thereby fated to fail.

I won't give the lesson away - you'll enjoy getting there yourself. I will say, though, that if Marx had been right, our world would be a much more horrifying place than any Matrix-like "Dis-topia" that Hollywood could contrive.

A gentle and genteel story of a family during the Civil War

Southern Cross by Madeline M. Dale is a gentle and genteely written story of Mrs. Dale's Kentucky forebears during the War between the States. Apart from the fact that it is a superb "read", drawing a reader eagerly from chapter to chapter to see what happens next, it also rewards the reader with fresh insights and glimpses into historical facts.

Adult readers can appreciate this novel; in addition it has appeal for young readers. I particularly rejoiced to find it one that might be recommended for secondary school reading lists. As the English curriculum specialist for a number of years for the forty secondary schools in Palm Beach County, Florida, I collaborated with heads of the English departments to develop recommended reading lists for each grade (and skills) level of our unified curriculum. The task was not simple, as you can imagine, cofronting not only a mutiplicity of teachers' opinions and students' diverse reading abilities and preferences, but also the sometimes censorious judgements of individuals in the community. Without hesitation, I would urge that Mrs. Dale's Southern Cross be included in school reading lists.

Books bring understanding of people, places and times apart from our own sphere. The people in Mrs. Dale's novel are worth coming to know--foregrounded against the tug-of-war between their everyday subsistence, loyalty to home, and moral sensibilty, and the burden of slavery. I recommend it highly.

Civil War historical novel based on true incidents.

A story based on facts as remembered by the great granddaughter of a tobacco farmer in rural Kentucky. An intimate account of the thoughts, purposes and struggles of one family facing the brutality of being torn apart by a national conflict that bled the nation. A personal account of slavery and how people who opposed it coped with being slave owners themselves, the cross that many Southerners had to bear. After the war they could not vote, could get no financial help and had no rights. There was no Marshall Plan for the South. Birth, death, war, prison, financial ruin, and a new start reveal life as it was in the 19th century in America's heartland.

The first time I ever heard of Sharon K Garner was on Tova's beauty show on QVC. In Sharon's book "Sanctuary" the main character wore the delightful scent of Tova perfume. After reading that book I became an instant fan of Sharon's work!

"The Spaniard's Cross" is a great romance/mystery that has you in suspense throughout the whole story! I didn't want it to end, I loved the descriptions of Cornwall and the old Penwith estate with all its hidden chambers. I felt like I was there on the incredible journey that Trevor and Ellie share! The great chemistry between Ellie and Trevor felt real and the dialogue was witty! I even enjoyed bad boy Mr. Reynaldos and all his evil scheming to get possession of the Spaniard's cross and learning how all their lives connect. This is a great book that I couldn't put down rich in history and romance! Its a book that you will come back to time and again... I read it once a year. You will become a fan of Sharon K Garners also! Happy Reading!!

Another triumph!

A thoroughly charming, refreshing, witty, and romantic story. Did not want to put this book down! As always, Ms. Garner has written wonderful characters you can't help but fall in love with. The story pulled me in till I felt I was part of the adventure, one I was sorry to see come to an end. I will read this book again and again.

A wonderful book about a great Saint

This book introduced me to St. Martin de Porres. The book describes in detail the exemplary life that St. Martin led in sixteenth-century Lima, along with the amazing things that happened to him as a result of his friendship with God. St. Martin's aim in life was to share all that he had with those who needed it - including both the destitute homeless and the theoretically-rich Spanish gentry who occasionally hid their own poverty behind a mask of pride. As an example of service to others, of true selflessness and love of God, one should look to St. Martin de Porres. Read this book as a good introduction to this extraordinary Saint.

This book is the most thorough and compelling biography of St. Martin De Porres. He was a Black-Skinned Hispanic who faced harsh discrimination centuries ago in Peru. Martin De Porres is known as the Patron Saint of Social Justice and the apostle of charity. He loved all people as sacred chidren of God and all animals as sacred creatures of God. Martin De Porres was a healer who cured sick people and animals including birds, cats, chickens, mules and dogs. He never ate flesh-foods. Martin De Porres was literally the Catholic Gandhi who opposed all forms of violence agianst any sentient being. This book is inspiring and St. Martin De Porres was a truly a Saint who wanted earth to become another idyllic Eden wherein there would be no bloodshed, strife or disharmony. Please purchase this book because it is solacing and will bring peace to your heart and soul. It is truly lamentable that modern Christians do not embrace St. Martin De Porres' reverence for all life creed !

This is a fantastic book to draw you right to Calvary. It places you at the scene and you are humbled by the experience of the Savior on behalf your freedom. I was trememdously blessed. This book in combination with Max Lucado's "He Choose the Nails" will give you a "first love" for Jesus Christ, and if you have once loved Him you will certainly love Him anew after reading this. I have lent this book to others and each and everyone that has borrowed it has been secured in the care of their loving Savior, Jesus Christ.

One of best books I've read in '97

This book touched my heart and made me realize how Godly our lives should be. It takes each one of the people who witnessed the crucifixion and analizes their thoughts during that experience. It was an eye-opening account that I had never thought of before. It can touch the life of anyone who takes the time to read it. I'll be buying several copies for my family.

ALL THE QUALITIES OF A GREAT NOVEL
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2004-09-07
If Tom Clancey or James A. Michener had put their names to Stars of the Southern Cross, this novel would have been an instant best seller. A. Robert Hill has created a literary masterpiece in his story about Collin Farley and the Fifth Army Air Force fighting in the South Pacific during World War II.
The Story has all the qualities that great novels possess.
1. PLOT. Hill has created a plot that produces a page-turner, a cliffhanger, and a book that is hard to put down until the last word is read. Each detail about the men who flew the airplanes against the Rising Sun is so real the reader can see and feel the searing action.
2. CHARACTERIZATION. Hill's men and women come to life with a dynamic 3D effect. From the pilots who defy death as they streak across a hostile sky to the ground crew who keep the flyers flying, each character comes to life as a skilled author breathes life into each one of them. And, the ballerina with a French name that the top ace falls in love with is straight out of a sparkling fairy tale done by a master. Hill is quick to let the reader know that the Stars of the Southern Cross are the characters from the United States who grew up in places where other Americans of that time came to maturity.
3. BELIEVEABLE CHARACTERS AND SETTINGS. A master writer who lived and fought where his characters lived, fought, and died carefully etches each detail in this book. The emotions expressed by men flying during deadly combat can have only been written by an author who faced these same tense moments while flying in combat under the same Southern Cross depicted in this thrilling novel that was written of a time when the freedom of the world stood in the balance. A MAGNIFICANT EPIC!

On the top of your reading list.

No matter how many novels you have read on World War II, this one will give new insights into the daily lives of the Army Air Force in the South Pacific. Robert Hill takes us into the cockpits during bombing raids, into ambulances on the airstrips, into a bar at Port Moresby and on on Guadalcanal and the Melbourne Opera House. We discover gold and pearls in a secret compartment in the hold of a coast watcher's sloop and crash among primitive islanders.
Technical flying descriptions of missions are as faultless as are the magnificent sights from nine thousand feet. In the fast-paced dialogue we follow the turning points of the war and of a poignant love affair. We are there with General MacArthur in the Office of Operations and with Antoinette as she perfoms "Swan Lake" unware of the fate of her favorite pilot, who is torn between love and duty. For an entirely believable fresh experience of the Allied encounter with Japanese Zeros in 1942, "Stars of the Southern Cross" belongs on the top of your list.
