very good starting point to understanding alt-rockReview Date: 2002-07-24
very good starting point to understanding alt-rockReview Date: 2002-07-24
the first 3 chapters of the book gives you a backgrounder on the history of new rock. he gives you the various definitions of "alternative rock" and goes through a time-line of the important events that happened. there's also 366 days of new rock that tells you various trivial events that happened on each of the year.
after that, the subsequent chapters are lists and artist trivia. he lists the most important indie releases, contravoursal music videos and album covers, bad and good career moves of artists, origins of band names, real names of artists who use aliases, etc. he even tells the signs and birthdays of some the important music makers. he gives you a low down on all artists, record producers and record labels that are deemed important in the alt-rock community and tells you why they are held in such high regard. this part is the most fun part of the book. he has a wealth of fascinating facts of the artists and he will keep you reading. some of the stories are funny and he has a huge list of about a hundred weird but true facts and stories about bands.
at the end, he even has a tour guide for the alt-rock travellers. he outlines the important musical historical sites in the major music making cities such as manchester and new york. (ie. CBGB'S and the Chelsea hotel in new york). it also gives you some important internet sites to visit of the major record labels and groups. though this list is a bit dated since the book was written in 1997.
over all, there's not enough room to tell you what's in this book and why it's such a good book. for me, it's an essential guide to understanding rock music. at times, it seems like it has more trivia and liststhan actual good linear telling of the history of alternative music, it's still a good guide to everything you want to know about rock music. after all, it's a genre that's so big and fractured (everything from grunge to techno to shoegazers), it is difficult to tell the story in a linear fashion. through the lists and the time line, it gives you a good picture of what alt-rock is truly about.

A truly fresh reading of PaulReview Date: 2007-11-06
This book properly fits in the recent tradition of the New Perspective on Paul. Brondos' main goal is to see if it is possible to understand Paul in a way that makes Paul's story of Jesus compatible with the story of Jesus we find in the gospels and Acts. Traditional interpretations of Paul have him presenting a gospel which is very disjointed from the story we find in Mark, Matthew, Luke and John. Brondos suggests a new way of reading Paul that brings these two visions of Jesus together.
It's a remarkable work. I highly recommend it.

Why Not Benefit Your Life?Review Date: 2002-11-25
This book can improve your life in a thousand ways. Jim Shead and Wally Armstrong take the
bible and apply it to the game of golf and to life in manner that is unobtrusive and realistic. For Christians and non-Christians
alike, this book competently teaches the reader the benefits of living in God’s Word.
Shead and Armstrong have divided
this book into chapters, with each chapter relating a message of Christianity to a specific aspect of golf, which is then
related to a specific aspect of life. Some examples of the chapters are; balance, timing, perseverance, and power sources.
The chapters work in a progressive order, the following one expanding or adding to the preceding chapter.
Perhaps the
most effective aspect of this book is the way the reader is kept from becoming lost as they learn about Christianity. The
progressiveness of the chapters allows the readers to grasp or understand a concept before they are introduced to more. As
well, Christianity can be confusing, and Shead and Armstrong reduce the confusion with the quality of examples they use.
Each and every example is realistic and most likely been experienced by the reader. In other Christianity books, examples
may seem to come from fairy tales, where only a few have ever heard or have themselves experienced the examples being used.
For example, most golfers have found themselves at one time or another facing a shot out of a sand trap. This example is
something that most people can identify with. “In His Grip” explains how life can also put you in a bunker, and uses God’s
Word to explain how to get out or prevent you from going in.
The bible passages that accompany every page also provide
a means for the reader to expand upon what they have just read and learned. What makes this unique is the availability of
secondary sources that go into greater detail and may provide further insights. If the reader was sufficiently impressed
with “In His Grip” and wanted to know more about living with God, they would only have to look in a bible (which is not difficult
to attain).
Shead and Armstrong also did a good job of keeping it light enough so the reader does not get discouraged.
This book was written in a manner that provided the reader with both encouragement and hope. The wholehearted encouragement
leaps of the page, creating the impression that the authors’ goals are to help you instead of writing to make a buck. The
only drawback is the length. A book that makes you feel this good should be longer.
So before you spend money on a book,
stop and think what you’re getting out of it. Entertainment from a book is one thing, lifelong self-fulfillment is another.
“In His Grip” is an incredibly solid read. Anyone (golfer or non) looking to find themselves and sincere happiness could
learn a lesson or two from this book.

Insightful theology in light of African American experience on one of theology's enduring questionsReview Date: 2008-09-25
The author is both an African American woman minister and scholar. Thus, she positions herself with the strong Womanist critique of atonement theory (particularly Delores William's critique of Christ as surrogate), but critically considers how Christ's blood spilt on the cross retains a sacramental understanding of redemptive suffering amidst the God's call for justice on the side of persons under the weight of oppression. Terrell stands on both the classical tradition (particularly Abelard) and, as a Womanist, on her own experience. From this evidence, the author critically appropriates how the suffering of Christ - the power of his blood - can and does historically provide a sense of both agency and strength.
The author's perspective is creatively informed and complex, substantiated with theological acumen across classical theology, African American religion, as well as her own personal experience and reflection.
"Power in the Blood?" is a great book for seminarians, pastors, and theologians interested in Atonement theory, Christology, Womanism, and African American experience.
