A great book for all cross-country skiers, new, old and wanna-bes.

Living in North Lake Tahoe for over 33 years cross-country skiing has become one of my great passions. In the winter months I spend four to five days a week skate skiing for fitness and pleasure. After all this time I figured I knew just about all I needed to about the ski areas in and around my home, but was I wrong. A short time into Tim's book I had already gathered new information and ideas for some exciting excursions both close to home and a day trip away. I would recommend this informative, fun book to both experienced and novice cross-country skiers. Also, if you have thought about cross-country skiing but haven't had the chance to try it, this is also the book for you. It will help you make some good decisions on where and how to start this great sport. Now, get out there and have some fun!

Great guide to Sierra Nevada XC skiing

With brevity and charm, Hauserman shares his thorough knowledge about local and regional cross-country ski areas. (There are 13 between Mt. Shasta and Yosemite.) Anyone yearning to get out there on skinny skies - either as a novice or as a veteran looking beyond the everyday workout - should buy this book. For beginning skiers, Hauserman breaks down the complexities of this oft-misunderstood sport and tells where to get more help on the web or at local ski shops when you need it. For veterans, he provides ski maps, directions, resort highlights, activities and even a little natural history. The chapters and guide entries are straightforward. During his two-plus years of field research, Hauserman explored thousands of kilometers of trails and ate in every resort restaurant (for research, of course!). He checked out local lodgings and interviewed managers and local skiers. The end result is a book that clarifies details and whets appetites for the best of the Sierra Nevada's groomed resort terrain.

An excellent comprehensive primer on enjoying the snow via skis
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2006-03-05
Aspiring skiers will love Cross-Country Skiing: Building Skills For Fun And Fitness: it joins others in Mountaineers' 'Outdoor Expert' series, providing a long-time PSIA instructor's techniques using step-by-step photos and learning activities to back instruction. Common problems receive sidebars of easily-accessed information, while technique is surveyed for different terrain and snow conditions. Cross-Cross-Country Skiing: Building Skills For Fun And Fitness: isn't just about technique, though: it includes games, health concerns, and tips on selecting skis and clothing. An excellent comprehensive primer on enjoying the snow via skis.

Steve Hindman's book is an outstanding introduction to Nordic skiing. He starts from scratch, describing the types of skis and bindings, and showing you how to get started for the first time. He then gradually progresses to the more advanced techniques of efficient and enjoyable cross country skiing. I have been Nordic skiing for 26 years without much instruction, and I learned a lot from the book. I highly recommend it.

An extremely fun time travel romp with a likable hero

Review Date: 2007-08-24
Where this humble book wins you over is with a compellingly believable, all-too-human young male hero who manages to also be extremely decent and likable. I enjoyed every minute of this tale. Its setting --modern and medieval Poland--is also a nice change of pace from typical SF literature which is too often rather Amerocentric (not that SM Stirling or Harry Turtledove don't write awesome time travel fiction, cuz they do!)

A must read for scientific survival types

This book, and the others in this series are well thought out, fun, and fast reading books. This series is on my top 10 to re-read list. The book tickles that imaginative spot in most peoples brain that questions "what if I was stuck in poland Pre-Mongol invasion?" Sure we all have thought about it, but Leo Frankowski has brought the idea to life with "The Cross Time Engineer". This is a must read.

A balanced fitness plan is easy with this book!

Cross-Training For Dummies is like having your own personal trainer! You pick a cross-training plan to follow (I picked the Weight Loss plan, but you can also choose from a "Base Fitness" plan, Athletic plan, or "Mix-n-Match" plan). Each plan tells you how much time you should spend on cardio and strength training, which exercises (cardio and strength training) you should try, and how much time you should spend on flexibility and power. Then, you just turn to the chapters they note to get a description of the exercise you should do! If you are already involved in a sport, you can also find exercises that will help you with that sport. Plus, there are a bunch of charts you can use to track your progress in your general health, body measurements, or weight training.

Just what you needed to hear
This book has a lot to say about why the church of christ approaches scripture the way it does. And most importantly, what we can do to recover the cross in our churches. Delicately, and with care and fairness, Leonard Allen uncovers the cultural framework that gave birth to the church of Christ hermeneutic, and offers insightful discussion on where to go from here.

An Excellent Vision for the Church today!

This book by Leonard Allen is just great. It has been one of the formative books in my theological development. Allen is a professor of theology in the "Church of Christ" heritage, but here he has written a book that is immensely valuable for believers of all backgrounds. Allen's thesis is basically that the church is to be "cross-shaped," hence the title "Cruciform." Upon this basis, he proceeds to argue the nature and mission of God's people, and how that is to be shaped around the character, nature, and mission of Jesus Christ. He will challenge your hermeneutical foundations, and offer an exciting vision of restructuring our churches to be more in line with the hope of Christ. Be sure to read his related book, "The Worldly Church," in which he seeks to correct the secular corruption of the modern Church.

The book I received was in great condition. The pages weren't bent and I don't think there was any/or much highlighting or writing from what I've noticed so far. If other reviews are this consistent, I would recommend purchasing from this seller.

A Great Text

Review Date: 2004-08-12
Several years ago, I adopted this textbook for the course I teach in cross-cultural counseling. I have not regreted that decision since. This deceptively thin and relatively inexpensive text is jammed full of up-to-date and useful information about cross cultural counseling, diagnosis and assessment. The writing style is clear and concise. It is highly readable, because the author does not go out of his way to impress the reader with his extensive vocabulary. He uses plain English whenever possible. The interviews with the experienced "ethnic counselors" are interesting, insightful and thought-provoking. The content gets repetitive at times, but I believe that is probably done in an effort to drive home important points for students and readers. Similarities and differences between various ethnic groups becomes very apparent and the practical issues that arise as a result of those differences are addressed. The history of each minority ethnic groups is examined and the carry-over effects are discussed. In short, I love this text and intend to continue using it for a long time. I just hope that they don't stop publishing it. That would be a shame. If you are loooking for a cheap, yet detailed book on cross-cultural counseling this is the book for you.

What we don't know can hurt someone

After reading several books on Female Genital Mutilation, I have discovered that most people I've talked with about FGM know little if anything about the practice. According to the statistics in Cutting the Rose, 6,000 young girls are mutilated each day! FGM has been reported in 28 countries in Africa, several countries in the Middle East and Europe, Latin American, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the United States. Whether directly or indirectly, FGM affects all of us. Efau Dorkenoo has compiled a practical, compassionate, informative book that describes the practice of FGM and advocates realistic solutions for its prevention. She says, "Rather than righteous indignation, what is urgently needed is understanding of the problem and the practical support to change it." Everyone should read this book.

A great introduction to all things dance

As with all the other DK Eyewitness books, "Dance" has its music program crammed with information. The Eyewitness writers and editors fill all spaces on each page, designing each with photos, illustrations, general text, item text, and enough white space to prevent the viewer from getting lost in overwhelm.

Topics in "Dance" are logically ordered from the question What is Dance?, learning to dance, ballet class, accompaniments, keeping time, themes and messages, then we get to the heart of dance: the story. Other topics included set design, behind-the-scenes workers, all integral to the story.

How to carry the story through dance is explained in more pages: beauty of the body, makeup, costumes, footwear, and masks. Each of these is detailed in two-page spreads. The history of dance takes eight pages. Dance as a part of community--public dances of various kinds, dance crazes.

Of course, a book about dance must include famous dancers and choreographers.

If you are interested in dance and would like a good introduction, look no further. If you child is interested, this is a great start. I think interest level might begin at age nine or ten.

Overall, "Dance" is a great book to own, to open again and again to learn a new piece of information about the great art of dance.

I actually stumbled upon this book by accident, and started reading it, with no big expectations. I was very pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed it. I have a feeling this one will gain a lot of momemtum in the coming months as word of mouth spreads. If you like fast paced mysteries that keep you guessing and on the edge of your seat, this is definitely a good one.

Great book! This would make a great movie!

Ok, I admit, I had a hard time putting this book down until the very end!! The dark side of the cross is a gripping story of a small town that becomes a centrifuge for a series of thefts, betrayals and murders and a detective's race against time to catch the evil culprits.
