The work of the cross is the gateway for intimacy with God.

Review Date: 2001-04-08
I read this book during a time of great personal crisis. THe Lord used this book to show me how intimacy comes through the cross. The greater the revelation I have of the cross of Christ and the deeper I yield to the power of the blood preapres me to receive a greater impartation of the Holy Spirit. This is not a work of strong will power, but an identification with Christ in the place of the cross. Read this for strength and encouragement in the incredible grace that God releases to us on the basis of Christ's blood in the cross.

The Blood is Active!

Finally, after letting this book sit on the shelf for eight years, I decided to read it. And I'm exceedingly glad I did.

Jesus' blood, what a subject! Yet, how small a stirring the thought of His blood brings to our hearts. When I realised that my interest in far less weighty subjects was much greater than the blood, I was convinced I should read this book.

In ten chapters Murray shows us different aspects of the blood. Nonetheless, a theme which must have been very close to Murray's heart seemed to arise repeatedly: the blood works in us by the Spirit, to give us the same inner nature of Jesus, of which the cross was only the outward expression. "What became visible on Golgotha was a manifestation of the character which inspired his whole life."

Practically, this is shown in our increasing victory over sin, taking up our cross and living a selfless life in obedience to Christ. This, as well as knowing our Lord in the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, is some of the virtues the blood works in us.

Finally, I urge you to not only read this book, but to meditate on it's contents that you may develop a true understanding of the blood. Then, I hope you will experience what Murray describes: "If I regard the blood, not as something inactive and must be aroused to activity by my faith, but as an almighty, eternal power which is always active, then my faith becomes, for the first time, a true faith."

A Definite Must Read!

OUTSTANDING!! A lot has been written on this topic, but Murray's book gives such a profound revelation of what we all need to understand about the precious blood of Christ. It turns it from theology to an absolutely life-changing truth.

The Blood of Jesus is the Only Way of Spiritual Blessing
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2000-12-06
In a day when the blood of Jesus is being removed from the very translation of the Bible itself, when the mention of the blood of Jesus is considered offensive even in the churches, this book and Murray's other, "The Power of the Blood of Jesus," are God-sends for those who are willing to accept the ways of God without cringing. Though the blood of Jesus is not in any way magical, it is nonetheless crucial and foundational to receiving ANY benefit whatsoever from God. If one could list all the spiritual blessings in the heavenlies in Christ Jesus (Eph. 1:3), and then search out the sole reason why these benefits are available to born-again Christians, and only to born-again Christians, they would find that every single one without exception is only available because of the shed blood of Christ. Murray clearly shows this truth in his books and mentions over a hundred benefits (between the 2 books) that are only available by Jesus Christ's shed blood. If you want to get back to true biblical Christianity, you must get back to the centrality of the precious blood of Jesus. Otherwise, you have no source of heavenly, spiritual, benefits from God, inlcuding salvation itself. Hebrews says, "Without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sin." Murray shows clearly that within that statement is included ALL the resulting benefits of forgiveness, as well.

Review Date: 2006-12-19
A book that takes you inside the American Red Cross and introduces the volunteers and employees who live the mission- helping neighbors in crisis, locally, nationally and around the world.
Michele Turk has also done a terrific job of illustrating how this organization rises to the occassion- from wartime to the devastating natural disasters and acts of terrorism- and how Americans depend on the Red Cross to respond.
The mission is what it's all about, and Ms. Turk presents the stories of volunteers and staffers in a way that makes you appreciate the blood, sweat and tears that they have given to the people they have served.
It's an inspiring book and one that should encourage you to call your local chapter and volunteer!

This is an amazing collection of true stories of generations of Red Cross volunteers, which is both a compelling look at the lives of these brave and adventurous Americans as well as an intimate account of the events that have shaped our modern society, from wars and disasters to improvements in safety and community development. I read the book cover to cover on a long flight and was in tears more than once. The lives of the volunteers and the way in which Ms. Turk organizes and presents their Red Cross focus shows the real life generosity of spirit and humanism of the Red Cross, without sugar coating some of the controversy surrounding its bureaucracy.

As I read the individual stories I found myself smiling and tearing.

Ms Turk brought the oral history of the American Red Cross to life in such a way that captured the compassion, dignity, and gentleness of generations of Red Cross responders.

Instead of shying away from the tough criticism challenging the American Red Cross, Ms Turk helped the reader understand that in spite of difficult challenges the American Red Cross is always there providing vital services in the most difficult situations.

Readers may find themselves motivated by this book to discover how they too can make a difference by getting involved in helping others in need.

this is a nice supplement to your other histo text and atlases because it is all EM. I find the EM pictures on tests to be especially difficult so I bought this book and it has really helped out. The format is a page of text on the left and an EM on the right.

With an understanding of how things look, and a clear explanation on how things work you hit the jackpot! (Great for medical students!)

Excellent atlas of electron micrographs for histology
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-10-04
This book consists of ~200 electron micrographs comprehensively reviewing the structures most often seen in histology courses. Each plate is accompanied with a page-long explanation of the image, a brief overview of the histological subject, and an orientation diagram is presented in most places that one is needed. The micrographs are carefully chosen to illustrate points that might be lost in traditional light micrograph pictures. I find that many of the explanations are more clear and concise than those in standard histology texts. The biggest drawback is that the explanations of the letters used to call out key structures on the images are hard to spot while quickly reviewing the text. A short key on each page would be welcome. But this is a minor quibble. This book is a fantastic accompaniment to a 1st year histology text, especially as fewer and fewer of them seem to be including EM images at all these days. Get it if you like to see good, informative, real pictures.

This is a good text. I am a practicing organic and polymer chemist, and I had studied cell-&-molecular biology and histology formally between 1977 and 1984 during undergraduate and graduate training. Periodically I read a review article in cell biology to keep current. With the advent, of non-viral transport of genes and therapeutic agents, I needed a low cost review. The text by Professors Cross and Mecer did the job for me and it is a well marked text on my bookshelf.

This book was purchased as a Christmas gift, but of course, I had to read it to make sure it was a good book. I loved the story and cover. It was a soul touching story about a man that found the grandfather he had never known. The miracle of the whole situation was uplifting. I love small, beautiful coffee table books and this is now on MY coffee table, along with three others I had purchased to give as gifts. I just couldn't part with it. It moved me. If you love stories about miracles at Christmas, you need to purchase this book.

Max Lucado's THE CHRISTMAS CHILD is a retelling of an earlier work, THE CHRISTMAS CROSS which is now out of print. The new edition is illustrated with photographs from a movie version of the work

If we look at what works and does not work in fiction, THE CHRISTMAS CHILD should not work. It is sappy, sentimental, and predictable. One of these characteristic in a book meant for an adult can work, two of these characteristics would be a maybe at best; all three would be fatal flaws for a book. Yet this work has all three characteristics and all three work together rather well. When a person reads this story about redemption and forgiveness, it is easy to be moved to tears. Lucado has a gift at touching the heart through his writing, and in doing so teaches the essential message of Christianity. The author of this little volume understands the miracle of the Christmas story, but knows that human nature has been weekend by sin, an ever present reality even at Christmas, and that the true miracle of Christmas is the redemption offered through the child born in a manger. Lucado demonstrates this through two very human people: a Chicago journalist who has been having marital problems and a church maintenance worker who has known great tragedy through mistakes he has caused.

Some could call THE CHRISTMAS CHILD a CRIPPLED LAMB or JACOB'S GIFT (two Lucado books intended for children) for adults. To put this work in the same category as THE CRIPPLED LAMB and JACOB'S GIFT is a compliment. All three works move the heart and retell the wonderful story of Christmas and how the Christmas message applies to our lives all through the year.

From a personal background experience, Betsy Leondar-Wright very effectively candidly and honestly communicates "the politics of class and what gets in the way of cross-class alliances." She provides convincing evidence from very interesting and inspiring individual experiences from people from various classes to support what she says about inequality and the struggle for social justice in America. The writing is clear and engaging, and the photos, cartoons and sidebars make it "user friendly." I highly recommend it to anyone involved in work for social change, regardless of economic persuasion.

Class Matters is such a great crystallization of things I've heard about class in little bits and pieces; Leander-Wright's models brings all the parts together. The format is really wonderful. I found myself picking it up, reading a story, putting it down to think for a while, and then flipping to another section for new inspiration. I so appreciated that the stories highlighted showed both the challenges and the successes of working across class lines.

This is the best book I've read on class--after looking at dozens of them. It's full of stories, photos, cartoons, and full of tips of obvious use to activists who want to work well with people of different class backgrounds and to educators who care about one of the most important and least comfortable issues in our society. I've already brought it to a social change gathering with other literature and it was the most sought-after book.

"Crooked Cross Factor" is a well-written fascinating
novel about the efforts to raise a sunken German World
War II submarine that has been lying in cold waters
off the coast of Iceland for more than 25 years. Not
only has this U-boat been there for all that time, but
it contains an undisturbed load of gold bullion. Into
this scene comes a U.S Embassy security chief, thrust
there by a spiraling sequence of events that have been
spearheaded by a mutinous crew of a Russian submarine.
Looking for lots of action, intrigue, even a gorgeous
female Minister of Icelandic Roads? You've got it with
this very entertaining and thrilling plot line.

The Cross by Gene Shaffer is a well crafted novel of the escalating contempt held for an American Cardinal as his interpretation of a two-thousand-year-old inscription as the missing final verses from the fifteenth chapter of the Book of Mark. As the Cardinal's election and coronation as Pope approaches, his discovery results in a political turmoil. Against the backdrop of the Catholic church, The Cross leads its readers through a story of murder, divisions of loyalty, terrorism, suicide and scandal. An "instant classic" and sure to be timeless tale, The Cross is very highly recommended reading.

Mr Lucado writings and the illustrations bring into view the extravagant price that Jesus paid for my sins. Mr Lucado's writings ,as usual, are able to draw you into the circumstances he is describing as though you had colored photographs expressing emotionals and thought provoking scenarios. . Never before have I been given this sharp and clear view of the cross that our Lord and Savior willing died upon. The pictures, illustrations and paintings are not just window dressing - they literally engage you.

This is an object that will, as Mr Lucado wrote, "bring you face to feet" with the One who proclaimed to be able to save us from our sins.

Max Lucado presents a lovely gift-sized book of The Cross. The book is filled with inspiring and beautifully photographed crosses that grace the pages. my favorite is the two branches naturally conjuctioned by nature in the form of the Cross. It reminds me that in God's wonderful creation tells us-He gave His Son, Jesus' Life for us. It's echoes everlasting in all living things. It celebrates the ancient sign of salvation and hope. Each picture is supported with an inspirational thought that comes from Lucado's books realting to Jesus' crucifixion, including 'And the Angels Were Silent,' 'God Came Near,' 'Six Hours on Friday,' and 'No Wonder They Call Him the Savior.' This would make a beautiful Easter (Resurrection Day) gift for anyone who has a love for crosses or wanting inspiring words to comfort the soul and a remembrance of Jesus' Love gift for us.

The greatest lesson I learned from this book is that God did not hestitate when Adam and Eve sinned, he was rushing to save us just as a Father would dive into a lake to save a drowning child. The Cross was not the mark of a failed Christ, rather the symbol of freedom for all that choose to follow him.

Archbishop Sheen's short series of meditations on the Seven Last Words and the Seven Beatitudes is a good read for anyone who wishes to meditate further on Our Lord's Passion. Though he claims there is no connection between the two subjects other than his artificial construction, I believe that he saw a real connection that exists between the two. Some of his written information is contextual (such as the "mailed fist of Communism"), but when one spends time in contemplation, one will realize that his information is not as dated as it seems. A good read any time of the year, but recommended especially for Holy Week.
