You don't have to grow up in Kentucky to love these wonderful recipes. It has the best apple pie recipe I have ever eaten in my life. The cookbook is divided into sections with content pages before each section so you can quickly find a great recipe without spending hours searching for that one special recipe. Sections include main dishes, vegetables, salads (everything but lettuce salads), pies, cakes, candies and others. The last section is Pickling and Preserving for those cooks with small back yard gardens who want to make some old fashion goodies. Recipies are made from healthy fresh farm products and flavorings - no chemicals and artificials - just the way our parents and grandparents cooked.

I had the wonderful experience of meeting the lady that wrote this cookbook. Her personality shines through the great recipes she included in this book. When I was trying to decide what to send to a co-worker that lives hundreds of miles from me, this is what I chose to send her. She lives in Oklahoma and tells me she LOVED the gift!
I would recommend this book as a gift for a bride most definitely, or for any other occasion!

My wife is by far the best cook whose food I have eaten. My mother gave her this book some 16+ yrs ago and she has absolutely worn the thing out pages are missing the bindings have broken down and countless bellies have been filled through the years. I am just happy to find it still available. BY far THE ONE AND ONLY COOKBOOK A WOMAN WILL EVER NEED !!!!!!!!!

My wife's hobby is collecting cook books. She and I both enjoy cooking. This book is probably the cookbook that is used by us the most frequently in our kitchen. It is full of just plain good eating recipes that are authored primarily by Kentucky cooks. You don't have to go to the west coast nor Europe to get the ingredients that go into these recipes. "What's Cooking in Kentucky" was given to my wife several years ago by our grand daughter as a gift and we have thoroughly enjoyed it. We recently purchased four of these books to give as gifts. I would highly recommend this cook book to some one that is looking for a book of easy to prepare, great tasting recipes.

Whatever your need from an easy meal for the family to a great dessert for a party, you will find it in "Where Hearts Gather". Thanks for taking the time to compile your family recipes in this wonderful collection.

"Where Hearts Gather" is a work from the heart. It made me miss all the delicious home cooked food many of us have made in years past, but most of all Susan touched my heart with notations with each recipe and from whom in her circle of family and friends the recipe originated. The recipes in the book are basic to prepare and are a wonderfully nostalgic treat. This is an excellent gift book. Pork Chops and Applesauce: A Collection of Recipes and Reflections

The stories told about each recipe are so heartwarming and make you want to continue the traditions with your own family and the helpful hints/tips are great for any kitchen. There are many recipes that I make on a very regular basis and often have requests for the recipes from family and friends. This cookbook makes a wonderful addition to anyone's collection!

I do like the book and use it alot for school. The part that I use most is the Directory of Words Cited. Unfortunately, many times the exact type of work to be cited is not listed. For instance, a book with an editor in multiple volumes in an edition other than the first is not covered. Neither is an article from a journal obtained from a database.

I first purchased this book when I was a freshman in college seven years ago. It is without a doubt the best and easiest reference guide to writing I have ever read. I love the plastic tabs that mark each section. This guide is easy to read and follow it is organized in basic steps that are categorized accourding to section. So for example if you need to find out how to cite a web page or a video tape, etc using the MLA style you just flip to the section called doucmentation clearly marked with a plastic tab. I have since purchased an updated guide for myself and also bought one for my brother - a freshman in college. I really wish I had this book when I was in high school. I highly recommend this book to any high school, college, graduate student or writer. I especially recomend this book for students with learning disabilities, I myself have ADD and before I got this guide I could not understand how to write a paper in the MLA style or in any style other than a book report. I promise this is the easiest reference guide to writing ever published.

This book is the best on the market - I highly recommend it to all students in high school and college -- and it is a must for every person who writes in business! It has everything you need to know about professional writing from the sentence to the essay or research paper, as well as resumes and letters. It should be added to the desk collection along with the dictionary and thesarus. I love the way it opens and lays flat; I love the tabs for easy recognition of sections; it has large enough print and enough whitespace to make it very easy to read; it has great explanations and examples, and the MLA section is complete and easy to follow. It even has a section for people who speak English as a second language and are dealing with the special problems related to English. This is a must have book !

This cookbook is perfect for anyone whether you eat wild game or not. These recipes can be converted to use pork, chicken and beef. What I really like is that the recipes use spices and different ingredients that I have in my cupboard and I do not have to run to the store for every recipe. Saves time and money and I do not have a bunch of ingredients that I will never use again, because this author incorporates alot of the same spices and ingredients over and over. The recipes are easy to read and do not need hours of preparation. In the back of the book is a wonderful section of savory dishes that compliment the other great recipes in this book. A must cookbook for everyone!!!

This book is the best cook book that I have EVER purchased. I Immediately I thumbed thru the pages and found that this book is divided into seasons, in order to take full advantage of the seasons growing cycles. Cherry Lemon Limaide in Summer. Cranberry chicken in the Autumn.. Chicken and dumplings for those cold winter nights, and Citris suprize awaits you in the spring.
Beyond all of the wonder recipes, they also give you tips that can turn ordinary household items into wonderful table displays. Mason Jar + unwrapped peppermint candies + a simple votive candle and some raffia string and you have a wonderful sweet smelling addition to your holiday table.
If you are concedering buying just ONE book to give or are like me and have an extremely triing, busy schedule and you want something quick to serve.. This book by the Great people from Gooseberry is your answer.

Thus far, everything in this cookbook is GOOD and HANDY (I have only had it a week or so, and have already used it three times, to the neglect of my other Gooseberry Patch cookbooks!) It's lots of fun just to read the recipes, which are both mouth-watering and almost TOO easy. Clear, simple instructions will please even the most novice cooks. I also loved how this book was organized by season: lighter, fresher dishes in the summer section; cozier, comfort-food dishes in the fall and winter.

The recipes are also extremely inexpensive to make, and in many cases, by using the staples you probably already have. In other words, this book is a no-lose situation! I'd choose it as a gift for any newlywed, college student, or family-on-the-go.

There are even really cute ideas for dressing up and changing flea-market finds, and other simple crafts and decorating ideas that even a fumble-fingers such as myself can handily accomplish.

Only one very minor complaint...it seemed that some seasonings were left out of a few the recipes, simply to keep them under 5 ingredients. But the basics here are so good I wouldn't have minded if they called for 10 ingredients.

UPDATE: Today I made the recipe for BIG Chocolate Cookies on Page 57. Something went wrong, or there was poor editing in temperature or ingredients, or SOMETHING. I ended up with a huge, gloppy, inedible mess. I've been baking since age 9 and have never had such a failure as this particular recipe. Gah!!

I got this book as a Secret Santa gift. After one night in the kitchen, I went nuts with all the recipes. They are all written so simply! They don't take too many ingredients. And I use my judgement on how healthy I want to cook. If I want a lower-fat meal, I just use a bit of butter/oil.

It has recipes from all over the world, Scandenavian cookies, potato pancakes, Jewish Apple Cake, pork friend rice, not too mention traditional Soul Food dishes. Also, I have a lot of experience in West African cuisine, and the traditional dishes are very similar.

You don't need to be of a certain race/culture to use this book! Most dishes are ready from 30 mns to 1 hour.

This is my most consistent in terms of taste of the 5 cookbooks I own. All the recipes I have tried so far have been GOOD and those who have eaten them have given them rave reviews. Some of the recipes aren't completely written, for example, one says, "Cook for 45-60 minutes." and it is not clear whether this means in the oven, in the frying pan, and at what temperature. There are enough of similar kinds of recipes though to figure these errors out.

For those who never learned how to cook like grandma or moms, this is the book to learn. You can also substitute ingredients, such as nonfat milk for whole milk, to make the food a bit healthier. You can also substitute smoked turkey for hamhocks and salt pork. However, sometimes you have to splurge and go for those to get that old school taste. :)

I'm not black, I'm white, but I enjoy cooking and cuisine generated from hard times and a lack of waste. While I have other cookbooks focusing on the history of cooking by black cooks in this country, what makes this little book particularly interesting is the sprinkling of history throughout. No, it's not comprehensive and doesn't pretend to be. However, like doughnuts and coffee, the two just go well together. Some of the recipes, particularly desserts, rely too much on processed foods I wouldn't want to make. The meats and vegetables are better. Still, it's a nice little book and I'm glad to add it to my shelf.

John Warden was the strategist of the air campaign in the 1991 Gulf War. In 1998, he updated his influential book. A must read for anyone interested in the military, its past, present and future.

A very good synthesis
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2004-10-25
John Warden's book earned high praise because of its author's role in planning operation Desert Storm, but although the book is a very good synthesis of air warfare theory it is not either groundbreaking or revolutionary. In fact most of its arguments were presented for the first time by the pioneers of air power of the 1920s and 30s like Giulio Duhet and William Mitschell. Warden's contribution has more to do with the revival of those forgotten theories and the presentation of a complete picture of aerial operations instead of inventing new methods of war. Central to his thesis is the idea that air superiority is crucial, that a campaign will be lost if the enemy has it, that in many circumsatnces it alone can win a war, and that its possession is needed before other actions on the ground or in the air can be undertaken.

Warden also places emphasis on thorough training saying that if something is going to be done in war, it ought to be practiced in peace, and if it has not be practiced, losses are likely to be high and the plan is unlikely to go as expected. He analyzes the three kinds of inderdiction (distant, indermediate and close) and he gives an interesting definition of the term "close air support": "It is an air operation that theoritically could and would be done by ground forces on their own, if sufficient troops or artillery were available".

The author repeats often the great value of striking the enemy's center of gravity, that timing is everything in the commitment of air reserves and that ground and naval forces can serve as an adjunct to air forces in the battle for air superiority. His opinion that fighting defensively is the worst way to fight an air war is uneiversally accepted as is his thesis that numbers are important, so important that a primary goal of the operational commander ought to be to make sure that his forces outnumber the enemy every time they meet. Modern research using the Lancaster equations has also proved his argument that the large force almost always inflicts greater absolute casualties on the smaller force and thath it also suffers less in the process.

John Warden also explains in the Epilogue how his concept of ideas was implemented in the Desert Storm campaign of 1991. In that case the enemy was visualized as a target system of five concentric rings (leadership, key production, infrastructure, population and field forces) with the leadership ring at the center. In the case of Iraq, the US goal was "to reduce the energy level of the entire system enough to reach our peace objectives" which were to eject "Iraq out of Kuwait and an Iraq that would not be a strategically threatening regional superpower for the next decade".

On the minus side of the book are the extremely poor black and white pictures.

Just outstanding and and very easy to read.

A Brilliant "Must Read" Synthesis of Air Power Thinking
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2003-06-24
Colonel John A. Warden III was one of the most distinguished officers of his generation. A veteran fighter pilot, he was--is--as well a true defense intellectual--not the sort of individual often touted by the so-called "defense reform movement," but a true warrior-scholar in the classic image of, say, a J. F. C. Fuller--or a George Patton. Not one to shy away from controversy, Warden was convinced in the 1980's that the United States Air Force--had strayed away from its first principles. It had become a stove-piped, tribal organization, riven by discord and confusion between its "strategic" and "tactical" communities. Warden, in this brilliant work (written as a thesis at the National Defense University), posited an exciting new vision of the centrality of air power in national defense. This book served as an important departure point for the service's subsequent "Global Reach--Global Power" strategic planning framework issued in 1990. By that time, Warden was running Checkmate, a key office in Air Force planning. Through his own initiative and vision, he and a small team of "weapons officers" planned Instant Thunder, the first major response to Saddam Hussein's aggression in the Gulf. Warden briefed Instant Thunder to the Air Force Vice Chief of Staff (the Chief was away), and then on his suggestion to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, Gen. Colin Powell. Powell sent him to CENTCOM to brief Norman Schwarzkopf. His reaction was enthusiastic, and Warden was directed to brief Instant Thunder in the Gulf, to the CENTAF air component commander, General Charles Horner. Horner, brilliant in his own right, accepted much of what Warden said. But the personal chemistry between the two men was bad, and Warden returned to the States, leaving behind a small staff of acolytes and experts, most notably Lt. Col. David A. Deptula. It was the partnership of Deptula, Gen. Buster Glosson, Gen. Horner, and (back in Checkmate) John Warden that made the Desert Storm air campaign a success. After the war, Warden became commander of the Air Command and Staff College, making notable (and badly needed) changes to its curriculum. This book is a "must read" by anyone who would consider themselves a military and/or air power professional. There are Americans alive today because of John Warden's work. Warden never made general, largely because of petty jealousies by senior people above him. He was--is--a consumate professional and true patriot: never complaining, never self-advocating, always keeping true to his core beliefs. But his truest legacy is this book and the thinking it has inspired--thinking that has lead to five notable American victories over the last decade. Buy it, read it, keep it, use it!

A must for the business or military strategist!

Col. Warden adds new material to this important work on strategy, especially new material on what happened after the Gulf War. This book is many things. It is a history of airpower. It is a fresh look at the application of airpower. It is a guide for anyone in the military or business world who wants to compete or attack a system. Very readable. With Col Warden's reputation as the architect of the Air Campaign against Iraq, he has demonstrated that he can apply his ideas in real world situations. Outstanding read.

Every book I have picked up seems to take a high handed I-know-it-all approach to care. This book takes a much more common sense humanistic approach, that seems to have been written with someone who loves their pet in mind.

I especially found the photographs of Anna interacting with David's house and family touching. It's refreshing to see this beautiful reptile out and about.

The book is also a great reference. David's disease prevention section is divided into the most common afflictions which might befall your pet, rather than an attempt to replace your Vet. His first line advises you to consult your veterinarian!

By the way, there is a review that mantions that there is no index, must be a different book, mine has an index (pages 100-101).

David's love of iguanas in general and Anna in particular comes through loud and clear in this touching story and helpful guide to caring for iguanas correctly. Anna my green friend discusses food, housing, bedding, disease prevention and treatment, basking lights, and much more that the novice iguana owner should be familiar with before they go out and buy an iguana.
It's a must-read for anyone considering adding an iguana to their household.

This book and It's author are second to none!

Some books are fun to read, and some books teach. " Anna my green friend", DOES BOTH! I really enjoyed reading this book, and you will too! Please read this book for your Iguana's sake, that is, if you want a happy and healthy green friend too.

Excellent Book!

Please read this book if you are thinking of or have already adopted an iguana. Mr. Krughoff tells the story of Anna, who was near death when she was rescued. Through the good care and attention given her, she has made a full recovery and has become a treasured member of the family.

Many people go wrong with their iguanas because they don't understand the extent of care that they need (BIG cage, heat, UV lights, and regular vet checkups) and how important it is to begin the socialization of these wild creatures when they are young. Many iguanas are abandoned or given to shelters because they have become too big and too wild to keep as pets. Mr. Krughoff's book is a must read if you wish prevent your pet from becoming the "monster from hell" and to redeem those that have met this fate.

He provides excellent advice on the feeding and care of iguanas (including those that are not in the best of health), how to socialize, and what it is like to have an iguana as a member of the family. I have followed much of the advice offered in this book and it has made a huge difference in the health of my wild boy (5 feet long and king of the universe) and my relationship with him.

Can't wait until tomorrow as I shall be cooking "Charlie's Chuck Wagon Stew" once again. It is without a doubt the very best stew in captivity. You cook it for 5 hours in the oven at 250 and your home becomes a place of heavenly aromas. This is a favorite of my entire family. Bon Appetit!

This cookbook is wonderful. Skees has a great way of using the spices to compliment any dish. I love the Spagetti Sauce, Pasticcio, Chocolate Chip Cookies, Banana Nut Bread, and Chocolate Sheet Cake, etc. This cookbook will make any amature cook feel like they are a great chef.

The chocolate chip cookie recipe in this cookbook is worth the price of the entire book. It is amazing! All the other delicious recipes are an added bonus. Not only that, the notes the author includes with each recipe makes you feel like a friend gave you the recipe.

This is my favorite cookbook, and I have many!!!

Someone in my college dorm had this cookbook and would often make them. By December, our entire dorm was addicted to them. I've never had more amazing cookies.

I grew up in Mississippi and have since traveled and lived all over the world. Trust me, unless you are a total foodie (heck, even if you are- I am and I STILL like these recipes) you will adore this cookbook. If you are trying to master regional southern cookery this is a WONDERFUL place to start. Real recipes from real people- this is the everyday food of Mississippi. If you want some of the more refined food order this (because it's great) but also order Southern Sideboards from the Junior League of Jackson, Mississippi. Together they make a wonderful set as a gift!

Okay, when I saw this Cookbook, I just had to have it. I have the Original Bell's Best cookbook. I was thrilled to see a compilation of all 4 cookbooks combined. I bought copies for some relatives of mine as well. The Bell's Best are well known here in the south (at least I think they are). I only wish there were more recipes added. It could easily been made a much bigger cookbook, esp. since the other Bell's Best cookbooks are hundreds of pages in length. I guess this will leave room for sequels so others can enjoy these recipes as much as I have!

Bell's best are my favorite cookbooks.

Especially 1 & 2. You can't go wrong with this cookbook. It has everything but the kitchen sink in it!!! I have never made a bad recipe from these books!

Hope it's as good as the original Bell's Best!

I'm ordering this now -- I can't wait! The original Bell's Best cookbook from Jackson, MS that my mom still uses lies in loose pages in a kitchen drawer. Some of its food-spattered pages are still held together with a ragged duct-tape binding; others are tucked into plastic bags or wrapped with a rubber band. We don't care. We still keep going back to it, more than any other cookbook. Ever.

I'm so excited to see what this version contains. The recipes in the original Bell's Best, published in the early '80s, I think, were easy to prepare with ingredients found in any grocery store. The results were always fantastic. God bless the BellSouth Telephone Pioneers for their wonderful donations of recipes and memories.
