This book is one I used in my graduate level reading course in early literacy. Anybody wanting to learn more about balanced literacy and what it is all about MUST purchase and read this book. It moves fast, is easy to understand, and good to share with co-workers, parents, and others who are not aware of balanced literacy. Great buy. You won't be let down.

I teach kindergarten and use a lot of what she discusses in her book each and every day.

Growing old is an adventure with challenge to be enjoyed if one has a healthy body and mind. To attain life style that offers the way to living a pleasant, functional life, Dr. Borgeas offers a variety of recipes and practices that extend to multi-ethnic customs and foods. It, therefore, is more than a cookbook. The readable print, easy going style of the text, interspersed with lively anecdotes and medical wisdom make this book entertaining and useful.

The subjects include care of the body using natural and practical ways of dealing with relaxation, exercises that strengthen and improve vitality and discussion of herbs, spices and flavorings that enhance the taste and texture of food. The multi-ethnic recipes are introduced with descriptions of origins and uses that emphasize their health giving attributes. There are also described alternative ways of living and thinking that may become healthy life style. Positive, practical suggestions are included. The book, basically, is a guide for eating and living a full, healthy life.

For those who enjoy comfort food, this is a great book. There are so many great recipes, and I was pleased to see that there were a varitey of soup recipes included, which I enjoy. I would suggest the jambalaya and the corn chowder- two of my favorites. Enjoy!

This book is a life saver when you crave sweets on a diet.

The hardest part about dieting is the urge to blow your diet when you need to eat something sweet and high in calories, almost forbidden while dieting. I was thrilled to find this book and have made many of the recipes already and can honestly say it saved me from disaster. I now keep many of the basic ingredients in the house so I can make something to get me over the brink of no return and keep me on my diet. Most of the recipes are simple to make and taste great. I have recently purchased another title written by Jyl Steinback and look forward to many great choices. Keep up the good work!

Recipes from my Nashville childhood, found at last!
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.

This cookbook is a real treasure of good Southern cooking. These are the very dishes that made Miss Daisy's Tearoom a Nashville landmark. Miss Daisy's Tearoom has been such a pervasive influence on cooking in Nashville that my mother and all her friends must have been cooking from this cookbook back when I was growing up in Nashville. Amazingly to me, here are the very recipes my mother cooked from before her recipes got lost in a move! Until I picked up this book, I had given up hope of being able to duplicate certain beloved dishes, like the Christmas Ribbon Salad that used to grace our buffet table in its red-green-and-white glory whenever we had a party, as well as the Fresh Apple Cake that I used to help make by grating the Granny Smith apples. This book is chock-full of delectable recipes, and I highly recommend it to all who want to have a taste of Nashville's culinary heritage. My gratitude to Miss Daisy herself, for sharing her recipes with us!

Susan Maza's book is an invaluable asset in my RV kitchen. There is a delicious, no-fuss, easy-to-make recipe for everything I have wanted to cook so far. I don't waste any food now with the ingredient index at the back of the book. Have a dab of sour cream left over? There is a list of recipes that use it! The hints in the front of the book regarding kitchen tools and ways to use them have helped to remove clutter from my limited cupboard space, and yet I have all of the tools necessary to prepare goumet meals. I highly recommend this book for anyone cooking for two with limited kitchen space. Or anyone wanting to cook good food with little fuss - I also have a copy of the book at home.

A great book to bring along on a dive. It's spiral bound and about 250 pages of pictures, descriptions and everything you ever wanted to know. Eliminates the "Did you see that?" "Yeah, what was it?" "A Ray of somesort" "Yeah, but what kind, I've never seen one like that"

I am thrilled with everything Allan Alexander does, and this book is no exception. The selections in this book are wonderful. Normally, I shy away from original compositions, but have abandoned that habit since encountering the great pieces by Allan Alexander and Jessica Walsh. There are some great "classic" renaissance tunes in this book including Kemp's Jig, Dance of the Washerwoman, The Troubadour Song, and Blind Mary. However, the original compositions are just as wonderful with my personal favorites being A Winter's Ronde and A Child's Ronde. The duets have remarkable balance between the two instruments. There is a lot of interplay and neither the flute nor the guitar dominates. Rather, there is a perfect balance. I am an intermediate to lower advanced classical guitarist, and I cannot STAND it when the guitar has some boring accompaniment while the flute gets the melody. This is definitely not the case here. Both flautist and guitarist will be very pleased with these arrangements. They are beautiful and many are well-suited for gigs, plyaing in church, weddings, etc.

School renewal- valuing school based change.
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 1999-07-31
I think that Carl Glickman's book is absolutely inspiring. Even though it was originally written in 1993 (and reprinted in paperback in 1998) it is still relevant to school systems which want to bring about an inclusive and empowering change.

Glickman argues that democratic future of society is the reason that we need to bring about changes and argues for a three part framework of renewal:

1. A covenant between the school and community which establishes the principles of teaching and learning. Powerful stuff!

2. A charter on school governance. This is the process of developing an understanding of how (and what) decisions will be made by whom.

3. The critical study process is the third aspect of school renewal. It is action research which examines the efficacy of school practices.

Glickman's emphasis on democracy gives a sense of purpose, a direction for change. Change for financial reasons is thoroughly discredited in education circles these days.

I am keen to try the strategies in my own school.
