As we have limited space in our R.V., I really enjoyed the More of the Four Ingredient Cookbook. The recipes are fun and easy to do with my grandchildren. They are delicious and imaginative. Much easier to try with only four ingredients. Great recipes!!

How I learned how to cook rice !!!

Review Date: 2007-10-12
My grandmother and mother were great cooks but the children were never allowed in the kitchen, until all stoves were cooled down and knives cleaned and put away. Imagine when I got married and didn't have a clue...My first attempt at cooking red beans ended when I was using a potato masher on the beans,(after an hour),to make them thicken some?
Well the rice was even worse, and butter didn't help at all. I couldn't get in touch with my mom and my mother-in-law could only laugh hysterically.
Somewhere I found the "Mrs Simms Fun Cooking Guide". ('68 version...in '74). "BLUSHING RICE"...perfect first time...and still is 33 years later. "ROASTBEEF SUPREME"...every Sunday, and guess what? My mom askes every time, "How do you make this?" (I'm not telling, it's the mustard).
Raising and feeding nine children and having numerous dinner parties, I have never gone wrong as long as my dishes come from this incredible, yet simple cookbook. So easy... so delicious. Always. No matter how low key or high falutin', it is always a winning dish, whatever you choose to serve. JUST STICK TO "THE" RECIPE MRS SIMMS WROTE. Don't add tobasco, or Tony's to the pot,(add it to yours if you wish). Don't tamper with perfection.
MY original book is so very worn, mostly pages 31 (Roast Beef Supreme....drool, and the gravy, oh..) pg. 32 (who would know what Swiss Steak, out of round steak, could possibly end up like this?), pg. 34 (Chicken Okra Gumbo, need I say more?), pg.47(Smothered Ham and Cabbage, if you hated cabbage, you won't anymore ), pg. 38 (Smothered Pork Chops)...omg!, and thank God for mrs Simms' Blushing Rice to go with it, page 72 in the '68 book....
For me it all started with my simple question of "How do I cook rice?". And I have tested and tasted it MANY ways. The only way, in my opinion, is the Blushing Way, Mrs Simms Way....
I hit this site looking for originals, or new, for my children...(9)...
I plan on keeping my original.

This text is a great resource for any teacher who wants or needs to use music in their classroom. Many times as music educators we are expected to teach in areas we do not feel the best at. As a music teacher this will add to your confidence and give you creative ideas for class. As a classroom teacher, it will help you understand music and music notation beyond what your students need so that you feel confident to teach the basics to your students and use music as a supplemental tool in your teaching. I highly recommend this text.

My Book About War and Terrorism: A Guided Activity Workbook for Children, Families and Teachers to Encourage Healthy Expression, Learning and Coping
This is one of a powerful and engaging series of psychoanalytically-informed workbooks developed by collaborating therapists in association with the Children's Psychological Health Center. Children disturbed by ever present news of war and terrorism as well as children traumatized by personal experience of violent social upheaval can benefit from using this book. Guided activity workbooks have helped children and their families cope with psychological trauma in the aftermath of tropical storms, fires, floods, hurricanes, tornados, tsunamis, earthquakes, and regional conflicts around the world. This excerpt from a paper by Dr. Froma Walsh, (quoted with her permission) applies to each of the guided activity workbooks in this series:
"One program designed for use in disaster situations to facilitate meaning making, emotional expression, and active coping uses activity books to help children to express their experience of both suffering and resilience (Kliman, Oklan, Wolfe, & Kliman, 2005). For instance, in "My Hurricane Katrina Story" drawing and word activities helped children to remember, document, and integrate not only the sad, bad, and scary parts, but also the helpful, brave, and good things that people did. In journal format, older children could describe what they learned; what would be helpful now; and things that they, their families, and their community could do to rebuild and be prepared for another hurricane. Such tasks foster key processes for resilience outlined in the framework above. A disaster can reactivate past trauma but also offer opportunities for further healing. ..." -Excerpt from Traumatic Loss and Major Disasters: Strengthening Family and Community Resilience by Froma Walsh, PhD, Mose & Sylvia Firestone Professor, University of Chicago, SSA & Dept. of Psychiatry,Co-Director, Center for Family Health
I found a great summary of the basic benefits of investing time in healing and recovery with the help of such a carefully conceived and nicely executed resource in this comment by the Medical Director of the nonprofit agency that supplies these books:
"The use of guided activity workbooks shows children that honestly facing the disaster is sup¬ported rather than avoided by their teachers and families or emergency caregivers. The use of drawings and encouragement of narrative writing advances a subli¬mative and witnessing process in which the child feels respected and useful within the child's human network. The child's personal locus of control and sense of personal history are enhanced. The psychological benefit of promoting the concept of shared experience in the child's mind in times of general disaster cannot be overstated. When the adults in their lives concretely acknowledge the complexity and depth of children's traumatic experiences, children are helped to understand that their inner world and their personal history is honored and valued. One cannot discount the therapeutic value of natural empathy and nurturing rescuers may provide to children suffering the aftermath of mass scale trauma. However, the only method I know of capable of reliably providing almost immediate and direct therapeutic relief to such children which is psychoanalytically based (and can help without reliance on such workers' psychological expertise) is the intervention of therapeutic activity workbooks we have made available for this purpose." -Gilbert Kliman, MD

The product description above is incredibly complete. The only thing I can add is that this version will give you the tools to study these areas for the rest of your life! The author has made this the quintessential sourcebook. Even if you have purchased an edition from another publisher, your extra money will be well spent.

I'm glad I found this book. I used to have one of the earlier printings a few years ago and I really enjoyed it. For the last several months I've been trying to hunt down a copy of it, so I was very happy to see it available again here recently. This book is good and solid in that it covers a wide variety of country "flavors" such as fast single-note soloing, double-stops, pedal-steel type licks, bluesy sounds and string snapping. It's a great collection of classic and contemporary sounds. The price was great and it came with a cd that also includes rhythm parts to play along with.

This is cool for a couple reasons. The book has musical notation, capo position info and chord indicator for capoed position and without. The CD is narrated by Tony Rice and at times he is a hoot. He does the songs at a slower pace that we mere mortals can appreciate and then at his blinding speed as well. He even includes the rhythm parts to practice with (slower versions of course). Who would have thought anyone could be accompanied by Tony Rice! After practicing a few of the songs in this book, I found myself more at ease taking breaks to songs I was playing for the first time at jams. It is probably due more to the practice, but I am for whatever motivates you to pick it up and play. Enjoy!
