The TelecomPioneers of Mississippi have published a series of four volumes of cookbook recipes, beginning with "Bell's Best" in 1981, followed by "Bell's Best 2"; "Savory Classics"; and "Bell's Best IV". The accumulative total of these four previously published cookbooks adds up to more than six thousand recipes! Now available from Quail Ridge Press is their fifth cookbook volume, "Best Of The Best From Bell's Best Cookbook" which is a distillation and compilation of 429 recipes taken from the previous four volumes of the 'Bell's Best Cookbook' series and presented along with informative and fascinating historical facts and illustrations showing the development of the telephone over the years from its inception with Alexander Graham Bell's initial transmission over a telephone line to his assistant Thomas Watson, down to the touch tone and cell phones present day. This outstanding compendium include recipes for beverages and appetizers; breads and breakfasts; soups, stews and chilies; salads; pastas and rice dishes; meats; poultry; seafood; cakes; cookies and candies; as well as pies and other desserts. Of special note is the chapter devoted to equivalents and substitutions. From an Almond-Bacon Cheese Dip; to Chicken Tortilla Soup; to Fruit Salad with Apricot Dressing; to a Sausage Rice Casserole; to Barbequed Shrimp; to Crushed Pineapple Cream Cake; to Old-Fashioned Chocolate Fudge, these are dishes that would grace any dining occasion, please any palate, and satisfy any appetite. "Best Of The Best From Bell's Best Cookbook" is a welcome and recommended addition to both personal and community library cookbook collections!

I grew up in Mississippi and have since traveled and lived all over the world. Trust me, unless you are a total foodie (heck, even if you are- I am and I STILL like these recipes) you will adore this cookbook. If you are trying to master regional southern cookery this is a WONDERFUL place to start. Real recipes from real people- this is the everyday food of Mississippi. If you want some of the more refined food order this (because it's great) but also order Southern Sideboards from the Junior League of Jackson, Mississippi. Together they make a wonderful set as a gift!

Okay, when I saw this Cookbook, I just had to have it. I have the Original Bell's Best cookbook. I was thrilled to see a compilation of all 4 cookbooks combined. I bought copies for some relatives of mine as well. The Bell's Best are well known here in the south (at least I think they are). I only wish there were more recipes added. It could easily been made a much bigger cookbook, esp. since the other Bell's Best cookbooks are hundreds of pages in length. I guess this will leave room for sequels so others can enjoy these recipes as much as I have!

Bell's best are my favorite cookbooks.

This cookbook is just what I thought it would be and I'm pleased. It's an easy read and go to book. There are many, many recipes of the same thing made in different ways with changes in ingredients sometimes too. I like that sort of thing.

This book was given to me by my sister as a part of my bridal shower gift. This is quite possibly the most useful gift I recieved. As a new homemaker and wife I have faced reality that I need to learn to cook and this book has come in handy just about every week. The recipes are easy and most ingredients you will already have in your cupboards and fridge. I also like the fact that they don't take long to make especially when everyone in your house works, the last thing you want to wait for is dinner! I highly recommend this to anyone and would also think it would be good for kids since the recipes are so easy. Five stars!

Finally - a super simple cookbook!

This is really a neat book! Just like the title says, all recipes contain 5 ingredients, some even less. The main chapters are: Appetizers & Beverages; Breads, Brunch & Breakfast; Soups, Salads & Sandwiches; Vegetables & Side Dishes; Main Dishes; and Sweets. There is a page to take notes next to the main dish chapter, plus the main dish chapter gives suggestions as to what side dishes and/or desserts to serve them with. The last half of the main dish chapter is entitled "Your Guide to Left-Over Turkey, Chicken and Ham" with recipes using up the leftover meat you might have. There is also a couple pages in the Sandwich chapter that gives "new and different combinations" for sandwiches, a page listing 6 "special sandwich spreads" and a basic hamburger recipe along with a page and half of creative ways to spice up the average hamburger. All in all, I think this is a really cool book, despite the fact there are no pictures, especially if you are really busy or don't want to take the time to fool with long complicated recipes!

Best of the series - more variety

If you told me that someone had made a book of recipes that only take five ingredients and three steps to make I would not have believed it contained so many delicious recipes. From appetizers, to breads, to brunch, soups, salads, sandwiches, vegetables, side dishes, main dishes, and sweets just about any type of recipe is represented here. This is a great cookbook for the novice cook or people in a hurry. The recipes are so simple that even a young teenager can prepare a complete meal without any problems.

Some of the recipes that I really liked were the Roasted Garlic Dip, Mini Reubens, Green Olive Spread, Pineapple Teriyaki Chicken, Ranch Chicken, Sweet and Sour Spareribs, and Peanut Butter Fudge. It was really hard to pick favorite recipes from this book because everything I tried was great. This cookbook has already become one of my personal favorites. It has everything that I look for - comb bound so it lies flat, easy recipes to follow, easily acquired ingredients, minimal cleanup, and very tasty. This is a highly recommended cookbook for anyone to have around the house to prepare that elegant meal that looks and tastes like you have slaved in the kitchen all day.

I think this is a good book for those already able to find their way around a bass fingerboard. This book has lots to offer for those interested in improving their jazz technique. However, I needed to take lessons in order to learn correct fingerings/positions before getting into this book.

I came to bass playing in my late 30s after a lifetime of playing mainly guitar, banjo and mandolin, and I went through a lot of books looking for a clear and solid foundation for upright jazz playing.

Of all the methods out there, Reid's is the one that has really stood the test of time, and for good reason. He starts the reader off with basic scales and simple patterns for playing over changes. From there it's on through more complex scales and patterns and finally, soloing, illustrated with a number of transcribed classics.

Combine this book with the Simandl book for basic technique (and a good library of jazz albums), and you have just about everything needed to guide the beginning bass player through the intermediate stage. For a player who already had a basic classical technique, this book alone is just about all that's needed to learn to play jazz.

a "must have" for the jazz bass player...

Rufus Reid's revised edition of the classic "Evolving Bassist" is a literal tour de force and a must have for all bass players regardless of what level of proficiency they play at. The companion DVD (available separately and highly recommended) is a gem in which Rufus jams with two of the finest contemporary musicians illustrating various aspects of the text. The DVD is worth the price just as a performance video.

While loosely defined as a method, the "Evolving Bassist" is really more of a well thought out approach to playing the instrument. The skills taught follow several threads of theory and practice, but it's not a beginner tutorial even though very early players will benefit from the material...and continue to benefit throughout their playing career. If one is desirous of a more basic text in the jazz genre then you must get "The Michael Moore Bass Method", probably the best tutorial currently available; the classical "Simandl" material notwithstanding. The two books and the "Evolving..." DVD really are complimentary and easily stand at the forefront of a limited field. Highly recommended.

The Four Most Common Haircuts That Anyone Can Master

I was given this book as a gift. It turns out that it was a very money saving tool. This book is very easy to follow. I especially was interested in the chapter on using hair clippers.

The pages of this book lay flat, which makes it much easier to follow the instructions while actually using the clippers. It repeats the important steps on each page, so that you are not constantly turning back pages. The print is large enough to see while it sits on the counter.

I started out using the larger guard as recommended , to get the feel of how much hair was being removed. This gave me the confidence to go to the next smaller size, etc. until I accomplished my finished cut. I now use the clippers with ease, and my family members are very satisfied.

I bought this book a couple years ago because we have four boys and my husband had always cut their hair. They were getting old enough that they wanted it to look a little more professional, so it was either spend a bunch at a barber or learn how to do it differently.

This book was a huge help. My husband was able to learn new ways of cutting so that the boys were happy with the results, and they didn't look as if they'd gotten their hair done in the middle of the kitchen, which is an important thing for teens;-).

Viggiano's helpful step-by-step instructions and clear illustrations make the book very easy to use It's organized logically, and the tips included make it possible for virtually anyone to achieve good results.

I estimate that by doing all the haircuts for each of the boys for 18 years, we've saved almost $9000 (calculating one $10 haircut per boy per month for 18 years). And for the ones who are over 18, and still getting haircuts at home, the savings keep climbing.

Lisa's book will not only rescue a lot of people from bad haircuts, it will also help you save a lot of money. I highly recommend it!

I am a mediocre piano player with some knowledge of chords, majors, minors, diminished, 10ths, 7ths, 9ths, etc..., but lack a real understanding of how to properly structure and use the chords when I play. I often struggle with creating the right harmony of notes.

I just started reading and practicing the first chapter and analyzing how Jimmy Amadie's instruction fits my style of creating chords. So far I can say Jimmy's chord structure rules are excellent. Over the next year or two I hope to work through each page of the book and practice at my leisure using his guidance to fully enhance my sound.

I am very pleased and look forward to what I will learn in each chapter right through to the very last page.

Jimmy Amadie is one of the most brilliant people living. He is in that little group of people who figured out that you could communicate by talking, that clothing keeps you warm, and that the explosion of igniting gasoline can be controlled and used to propel automobiles. He is a Ray Kurzweil of music theory education. When Amadie came to music education he found insane chord notations, and statements showing little understanding, like "you can play a C chord over a D minor chord", and jazz education that produced dead comping, repeating the same voicings over and over and over. After much thought and 20 years of honing his educational strategy, Amadie came up with a blindingly simple conception of harmony and chord voicings, and then went on to develop an amazingly effective method of conveying the conception so that players were infinitely inventive and comping becomes as creative as a lead solo.

Here are some of the core concepts: There are only four chords: major, minor, minor 7th, and 7th (dominant). All chords that you might create turn out to be harmonically in one group or another. If you want, you can freak out about your favorite notation, but often you're not freaking about the notes, the harmony, or the voicing. Often, you're just stuck in what you call the chord.

Every voicing can be acheived with two notes in the left hand and three in the right. This system makes Amadie's approach work extremely well for players of other instruments who want to explore harmony on the piano or would like to be able to provide a little support on the piano. This is not a system that depends on piano chops.

All the wild and weird notes that you can add are . . . wait for the suspense . . . embellishments. That's it. Nothing fancier and nothing less.

As you work with the book, expect it to take you about a year or two. You can sit down and read all the words in a day, but you won't have followed Amadie's assignments and you won't have integrated the harmony and voicings into your playing. And, if you read it all in one day, the book may not make a lot of sense. You probably won't get it. You have to work your way through it.

Along the way, you will find that your ear has changed. You will hear 6ths, 7ths, diminished 9ths, and so on. And you will find your improvising changes. This is not a book about improvising, but it necessarily changes what each note of a chord's mode means to you, and that will give you more power to create what you're aiming for in your solos.

Every system produces a type of sound. Some systems, like Baroque and surfer, are very limitting, and everyone following the system sounds a lot alike. Once you have mastered Amadie's system, you may alter it to create a sound that is outside what Amadie sets the foundation for. But even if you stay inside his system, you can cover a range of music from Swing, through Bebop, Cool, Smooth, Modal, Fusion, to Free. Trad (Dixieland) requires that you hold back on the embellishments more than Amadie recommends, as does most of the pop tradition, including Rock and Roll.

I studied this book in 1981. 25 years later, I am still overwhelmingly grateful to Mr. Amadie for the gift he provided by discovering this conception of harmony and this way to master the concept.

Philadelphia had (until his recent passing) been home to the quintesential Jazz Sensei/Guru, Dennis Sandole. Yet, in the shadows of Dennis's studio down town, this here city has another great sensei to offer the world...

It is impossible to play Jazz without learning how to use your tones... You need them to make chords, you need them to form solos, and until you have mastered them, entire world's of ideas will be beyond your reach. The irony of it all is, over any chord, there really aren't but 7 tones you can use.

This incredible book will take you step by step through that process of finding and putting them together. I have used it with myself, I use it with my students. Work through this book and never again will any voicing or chord seem too challenging to make, play or even solo over on the spot. It will improve your ability to use fake books, to make chord notations, and ultimately your hearing.

Jimmy Amadia may have re-invented the wheel, but he's done so brilliantly... and in a manner that leads to a brilliant economy of style, both in terms of learning and performance.

Extremely learner friendly yet instructive and effective

Of all the how-to-play jazz books I've gone over, this one stands out for being just "plain English". About the most exotic musical terms you will find here are "Augmented 11th". But Amadie manages with only this to show you his unique method to construct chord voicings that are simple, straightforward, yet surprisingly varied and creative.

I appreciate the plain and deliberate pace of the text instructions, like someone is talking to you, but still precise and definitely not sloppy like some other books.

There are many different paths to building the foundation for jazz playing, and this is one of the most accessible. It is my favorite (contrast this with, e.g., Modern Jazz Piano by Brian Waite). Even if you are already an accomplished player, you might be pleasantly surprised by Amadie's method (he calls it the Amadiean Creed).

What you will learn:
1. How to quickly and flexibly voice a variety of chords (major, minor, m7, dom7, dim) with various embellishments (6, 7, 9, 10, ...), all using the same technique.
2. How to harmonize these with a melody.

What you will NOT learn:
1. How to improvise. It's simply not covered. That's in the title: Harmonic Foundation (only).

This book and his Amadie's musical message are much needed.

If you are looking for a book to help you design healthy meals for kids, this is it. I have tried several recipes and they have been a hit. We had one miss, the macaroni and cheese, but all the other recipes have been something my kids love. An unexpected plus is that my kids see the kids on the cover and are willing to try things they would never eat because I tell them that the kids on that cover love the recipes. Try the chocolate banana bread, it is to die for. What I love about this book is that it is very down to earth - and doesn't expect you to make a craft project out of every recipe just because it is for kids. Thanks Susan!

This is a very useful book. It is not meant to be read, but to be used as a reference guide. It is just packed with useful growing information. Information can be looked up easily.

I have taught agriculture and worked in agriculture my entire life. This book encapsulates the growing information for crops very well.

Experienced growers would fare well to have this book on your desk of resource material. New growers will be milestones ahead to familiarize yourself with the information in this book.

This book covers every aspect, from starting from seed, soils, greenhouse and field production. Want to know how long it takes a particular crop to mature to harvest? Its here, along with hundreds of other useful tidbits.

Don't expect everything to be written in paragraphs. You have to be able to read and interpret simple charts and graphs.

If you put into practice even one tenth of the information contain in this book you will grow your garden or crops much better. You fare well to buy this book over many of the others with glossy nice to look at pictures. This is a book of facts with an abundance of information.

I recommend this book to anyone growing vegetables for gardening, hydroponic gardeners, or crop production.

I give it five stars. This book, which contains a variety of information from a wide number of sources, is not a "how-to" book. Its information is mostly in table form, so the book's main use is as a reference. Some chapters, such as the one on water and irrigation, contain information I've never seen anywhere else, except in technical publications. The chapter contains line illustrations and descriptions that are accessible to the layman. The chapter on vegetable pests also contains (black and white) line illustrations of the insects. First published in 1956, this handbook is an indispensable, up-to-date companion both in the field and in the marketplace. Topics include the vegetable industry, greenhouse vegetable production, soils and fertilizers, water, pests, weed control, harvesting, storage, and seed production. Packed with quick-access graphs, tables, charts, and line drawings, the 4th edition offers new information on drip irrigation, seed germination, plant tissue and sap testing, windbreaks, and weed management. It also gives advice on allowable pesticide and herbicide use and on the latest worker protection standards. The appendix contains sources of vegetable information, providers of vegetable seeds, periodicals for vegetable growers, and U.S. units of measurement and the metric conversion factors. A change from the spiral-bound 3rd edition is a sturdy, flexible cover to help hold pages flat.

I have been buying music books for over 20 years and this is, by far, the most complete! I bought 5 copies for family and friends and they all loved it. It's THE book that should be in every music collection and schools. If you had a 10 star rating, I would give it a 10. Thank you, Amy Appleby for sharing your expertise with us. Write more!

Even though I've been playing piano (and other instruments) for years, I'd never bought a complete music book until this one. It covers everything. It's the perfect start or addition to any musician's library.

This is a great collection of all types of songs. Although I don't play an instrument, my son is learning to play the keyboard. I have used the songs for groups at work and now my son is getting use of it as he learns to play. It is truly a wonderful collection of music.

I have had this book for almost 10 years now and finally started to learn to play the piano. Over the years I have used it for the songs mostly with clients for music therapy. Several clients have used it to play keyboard. With over 200 selections, there is something for everyone. It has seen a lot of use but is still in wonderful condition. These books are made to last and the comb binding allows it to lie flat which is definitely a plus for all levels of musicians.

This was a very good choice for me, it gave me alot of different music to choose from. The style made it eay to read and turn pages. I was most impressed with the idea I could go from a lullaby to a marching tune without having to switch books.

A wonderful assortment of pieces accompanied by wonderfully arranged interpretations. The songs in here continue the Piano Classics that everyone should know and provides a nice mix of easy-as-pie to finger-bleeding arrangements.

Playing from this book will not only exercise your mind and help cultivate your understanding of the art, but will also provide you with wonderful presentation pieces.

Every home with a piano should have this book.

The best thing about this book is the variety. There are so many songs included in this book and several different levels of difficulty. This is by no means a beginner book, but there are songs that will challenge you and songs that will please you.

Nice collection for intermediate player

I used to be an early advanced player when I was a teen but lost interest and stopped playing altogether. Now some 15 odd years later I'm trying to pick it up again, and even though I'm probably back down to intermediate level I'm just glad I didn't lose it all. This is a great big book with a nice selection of about 100 songs, over 300 pages. I love the plastic coil binding, the book STAYS open! A definite gem to add to your collection.

I really love this book. I have found that the spiral binding is great for beginners. It opens flat and turns easily, so when I am looking for a new book to add to my collection, I am immediately drawn to yours and as in the past, this is a wonderful collection. I am enjoying learning the music of the masters. Thank you for your talent of creating such a combination of pieces that make learning much easier and yet will be so gareatly appreciated by the expert for years to come.

Better than Betty Crocker!

Viewers, I know Betty Crocker Cookbook has been around for a very long time; long before I knew how to say Betty Crocker, but when I first discovered MaryAnn's Cookbook, I was living in Cali, and I had to order the Cookbook thru a major Bookstore. Upon reciept of the Cookbook, I started with the Meatloaf by the Professor...It is the best I've ever had; now don't get me wrong I do enjoy making meatloaf the ole fashion way, but that recipe will leave you coming back for more. So I relocated to the South, and left my Cookbook with a relative to use, unfortunately, I never got it back, so I contacted every Bookstore in this town, and everyone is sold out, or can't order the Cookbook. So, I saw on the Amazon.com that I could order the Cookbook, and I've always been reluctant about putting my CC number online, so I sent a MO in to the address listed on Amazon, and to no avail, my MO was lost in the shuffle, I went belistic, so I am now forced to put my CC online in order to get the Maryann Cookbook, and I will tell each and everyone out there, if you've tried the rest, then you MUST try Maryann Cookbook, it is the BEST. It's worth losing the money from the MO and having to go another route to get my Maryann Cookbook. God only knows, I wish I could have ordered the Cookbook from Maryann herself, then I know I would have long recieved my Cookbook by now. Again its worth it!!

Mary Ann is the coolest. And man can she cook!!

Not only does this book have some great recipes, but Dawn has done a masterful job of both blending and separating the fictional characters of Mary Ann and the real- life Dawn Wells through the various anecdotes that are sprinkled throughout the book. A must have for every Dawn Wells fan.

Great recipes, great stories.

Every recipe I've tried in this book has been wonderful! There are Gilligan-themed recipes, favorite recipes of cast members, and Dawn Wells' own family recipes, along with an interesting story about her family's history in cooking! (Naturally, there is a plethora of coconut-cream pie recipes as well!!)

Between the recipes are fascinating behind-the-scenes stories about the cast members, Gilligan trivia, and bits of script from the series.
