Not only does this gem contain many wonderful recipies, it also has fun facts about NE sprinkled around the pages. Many recipies include cranberries, squash and seafood found in New England. It's spiral-bound and easily cleaned off it something splashes on it. I've made recipies from here (especially the stuffing) to rave reviews. I've also given it as a shower gift.

BOOK REVIEW
A reference/collector-book, the Comb, Its History and Development, by Jen Cruse, ISBN 0709081375, published by Robert Hale, London, first edition, was released November 30, 2007.
Cruse's years of dedication to collecting and researching brings this
major new collector reference book to life. It is said to be the first comprehensive study, in the English language, dealing in-depth with ornamental combs and hairpins from around the world. Jen Cruse is a writer for the Antique Comb Collector, the newsletter of the Antique Comb Collectors Club International.

Combs illustrated, as well as those from antiquity, are from Victorian, Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods. Artists who designed combs worked in France, Great Britain, Scandinavia and many other countries. The variety of goods that combs are made from spans sources of carved ancient bone and antler -to ivory and solid gold, a host of other materials - and in modern times from contemporary plastics. From the first, they were carved from such materials as tortoise shell, horn, vulcanite and mother of pearl.
Most were popularly worn between 1870 and 1930. The history of the ornamental comb unfolds --tooth and prong, following fashion's trends and creating trends of design and style in line with discoveries found in graves and tombs.
Since 4,000 BC, combs have an important place in the belongings and in the grooming of both men and women.
Combmaking, tools, tips for collector on cleaning and caring for various materials, how to discover fakes and forgeries can save real money for a beginning or expert antique comb or jewelry collector, museum or historical society curator. Those who love beautiful books will enjoy this fascinating book.
Nine chapters, nine-page index, 272 pages, more than 500 color and black and white images - sketches, photos, drawings to help explain comb vernacular. Printed on fine paper, fabric-hard cover, smart dust jacket.

Written from the point of view of the collector this book gives an excellent historical review of combs and hair ornaments of all types and styles. Not only precious stone and diamond items are covered but those made from more humble and available materials like turtle-shell, ivory, coral and gilt metal. The author goes into a great deal of detail about social facts, history and etiquette which lay behind the development of different styles of ornaments. There is also information on collecting and looking after these ornaments.

SIMPLY THE BEST REFERENCE MANUAL FOR POLICE
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2002-01-31
I reviewed probably all available spanish/english reference manuals for police officers before ordering Trooper Dents Manual. It is head and shoulders above the others. Its easy to read with all the phrases Police officers need. As a police Sgt. I use the manual at my briefings to teach my officers what I call survival spanish. Teaching simple commands like "Manos Ariba" (Hands up) can be a life saver at a car stop. The book also comes with several audio tapes I listen to in the car which helps me verify my pronunciations are correct. A copy of this book should be in every police station across the country.

The Complete Thesaurus of Musical Scales

Great book

Masaya Yamaguchi has written a very intelligent work entitled "The Complete Thesaurus of Musical Scales" originally printed by Charles Colin in 1999. In Appendix I of Charles Colin edition, Yamaguchi had already established a mapping of his work on the nomenclature of Allen Forte. In 2006, the revised edition (also available from Jamey Aebersold) was released using the newer notation system, which encourages the imaginative formation of scales that bridge between tonal and atonal music. This book helps me to deepen my scale/harmony knowledge. For example, harmonic *major* scale (i.e. 1 2 3 4 5 b6 7) is the latest addition to the list of required scales at Boston's conservatory, Berklee College of Music. But this is only one of possibilities (i.e. 7-32M). As Yamaguchi's book says, we have 66 possibilities in 7-note scale category: By consulting Yamaguchi's Thesaurus, we can try some other non-diatonic scales in a systematic manner. Because of the Coltrane's reference myth, many people go to Slominsky's Thesaurus. However, the truer story about John Coltrane was that he went to the Granoff School of Music and studied with Dennis Sandole (also known as Pat Martino guitar teacher). At the Granoff School of Music, Coltrane asked kinds of `possibilities' questions - "How many possibilities of 7-note scales are there?" etc. As far as his own Down Beat "Coltrane on Coltrane" essay said, Yusef Lateef inspired him to explore exotic/non-diatonic languages (i.e. Coltrane did not mention Sandole in his own words). Whatever Coltrane sought for, we can get all of answers to the `possibilities' questions from "The Complete Thesaurus of Musical Scales" - Yamaguchi represents the intervallic architecture of the assorted scales more than ancient Greek astronomers could do. This is the greatest reference tool on scales (and, of course, grouped-note harmonies/clusters) I've ever own. In this point of view, I will give 5 stars to this book though I'd never recommend this book to novices at improvising/composing (except aspiring beginners - they can keep this scale dictionary in their library until they musically improved).

Guitarist Masaya Yamaguchi's article "Note Groups of Limited Transposition: A Key to Unlocking Multitonic Change Possibilities" has been published in Down Beat (Sept.2000) on p.70. The author activates the knowledge of his Thesaurus book in Coltrane Changes - Multitonic Changes. This book is GREAT!!! "The Complete Thesaurus of Musical Scales" is a meta-contribution to music pedagogy, of a high standard.
