I got this when I was having trouble with my Air Conditioner and I wanted to cool my den a little to make it more comfortable in the late afternoon. I have a fairly large freezer and so freezing the aluminum cans and plastic bottles as described was no problem and using them with my small turbo fan did work a lot better than just using the fan alone. I usually get about a cup full of water in the tray. This is a short book but does have a lot of information and pictures.

Not just for marketing, great Gay Culture 101!
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2007-01-22
If you're a major corporation looking to explore wooing the LGBT market -- then you've probably already read this book, cause it's an invaluable resource, chock full of practical examples and experiences. But more importantly -- if you're trying to include more LGBTs in your work, whatever it may be (for me it's public health), then pick up this book as a Gay 101, because it gives a wonderful overview about the diversity of cultures included in the LGBT community. No, it won't give you much on definitions really -- it gives you that great sociological overview, how not to stumble, how to be relatively familiar with a culture you may not have history with, what the cultural structures are, .... etc. etc. Great help!

Too many secrets

There are many things, tricks, that can be done with telephone systems that are virtually unheard of by the general public. There are also codes available to people with inside information about telephone systems that allow them to activate "call forwarding" on lines that do not have this service through the phone company. Phones can be modified in a way that will allow the caller to be able to program any number they choose into that phone so the caller I.D. of the person they are calling will show this number and not the actual number from which the call is being placed. And, of course, as described in this book, your number is not always blocked as you may think since many 800,888,866, numbers that you call have equipment that shows your number regardless. One method that is virtually foolproof is to use your cellphone and make calls with a calling card. Virtually untraceable, cannot be blocked by recepient and, of course, they can't *69. Also, some cell systems allow you to make calls from inside your voicemail. No record of calls made this way will appear. Your bill will only show your own number. WATCH OUT FOR CALLING CARDS FROM PHONELINX! DO NOT USE THEM!

Mini-sized guide with maxi-helpful information
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2000-09-07
The Opera Journeys Mini Guide Series is just wonderful; it's like a "Cliff Note" of the opera, and extremely informative and educational. I particularly like the size; these guides are not cumbersome and fit right into my shirt pocket. The ladies will find sufficient room in their pocketbooks.

The story narrative with the music examples is excellent. I prefer it to a libretto; indeed, it's a much easier way to follow the essence of the story. The essay is magnificent; very well written, not pedantic, and extremely insightful and comprehensible. I congratulate Burton Fisher for a job very well done and Amazon for making these handy, information-laden booklets available. The Opera Journeys Mini Guide Series is a wonderful contribution to opera education and opera appreciation.

My tip: acquire the entire collection because you will be in easy reach of superbly presented opera guides consisting of story analysis, principal characters in the opera, story narrative with music highlights, background, analysis, and commentary.

Greatest value of this work is its comprehensiveness
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2001-02-03
Cell biology techniques have been continuously upgraded since the middle of this century, and future developments seem assured. In the 1990s, alone, new developments have led to improved separations capability, detection instrumentation, and new formulations of serum-free media. Any research institution with faculty and students engaged in cell biology will want to have the most current laboratory guidelines available, and this four-volume, peer-reviewed collection of protocols answers that need. The second edition has benefited from suggestions from practicing scientists, filling in gaps from the first edition.

Perhaps the greatest value of this work is its comprehensiveness. Laboratories and libraries can have detailed guidelines for cell culture, separation, staining, growth, apoptosis, preparation of component parts, assays, antibody production, genetic engineering, microscopy, electrophoresis, and more, all in one source. Need to know how to produce transgenic mice? It's here. How to grow viruses? Prepare nuclei? Stain mitochondria? Use fluorecence microscopy? All here.

Although there are 486 contributors to the 250 articles, uniform structure of articles builds continuity and thus ease of use. Most entries adhere to the five-part template (Introduction, Materials and Instrumentation, Procedures, Comments, and Pitfalls). This last section, "Pitfalls," seems especially valuable, as there is no substitute for experience. The main difference between articles tends to be the use of supportive graphs, photos, and tables, though in general (if such a diverse collection can be spoken of "in general") visuals are at a minimum.

There are many great things to say about this book. It overflows with vital and useful information for the true athlete or any fitness-minded person. It is very easy to read with smartly organized sections and succinct presentation. In addition there are lots of charts with practical data that allows the reader to easily put the author's suggestions to use. Finally, the author makes this book fun to read as he interjects humor and jokes throughout. This humor allows the reader to easily remember the author's suggestions as well.
