A different way to learn and enjoy history
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 14 total.

The only disadvantage of reading Jody Pott's illustrated history is
that the sequel is long overdue...you'll so enjoy this version, but
will long for the next book in the series, covering the years since
1877.

This is a great, easy way to learn American History, for kids
or adults. Whether or not you have a problem assimilating written (non
visual) text, Dr. Potts' book will teach you the history or broaden
what you already know.

Our history teachers and students need many,
many more books like "Adventure Tales of America." I really
enjoyed it, as did my son during his grade school years.

So
Dr. Potts, please hurry on the sequel!

GRAND UNIFIED THEORY WINS NOBUL PRIZE IN PHYSICS!
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2001-03-04
.

Net Prophet is Very Pleased to announce the Very First NOBUL PRIZE for Exceptional Contributions to TRUTH is Hereby Awarded to STEVEN RADO for his UNPARALLELED AND UNEQUALLED LIFE WORK in PHYSICS and COSMOLOGY.

Mr. Rado [affectionately known to the cosmic cognoscenti as "Zvieinstein," since he's Way More than Twice as good] recently published his first volume on physics and cosmology, entitled Aethro-Kinematics.

His revived and corrected Aether Theory of the Ideal Gas has SOLVED most of the basic problems and absurdities "modern" physics has attempted to sweep under its very lumpy Himalayan rug for a century now.

With the careless and unpretentious ease of the Perfect Master, he RUTHLESSLY DEMOLISHES the insanities of Einstein, big bang, quantum theory, imaginary forces, action at a distance, inverted time, telepathic particles, causeless effect, contradictory speeds of gravity, warped space, and other completely bogus mental perversions and rotten worm holes physics has asserted to insert foot in mouth and swallow . . . ever since it misinterpreted the Michaelson-Morely experiment and turned its back on reason and understanding in favor of unknowable uninterpretable unexplainable mathematics and byzantine convoluted mysterious spooked-up priestified voodoo incomprehensibility.

Along the way he STRICTLY DERIVES from his SIMPLE IDEAL GAS MODEL [with complete mathematical rigor]: how gravity works, Kepler's laws, Lorentz, speeds of light, wave-particle duality, Faraday, red shift, electron diffraction, E=MC^2, and MUCH, MUCH more of our proudly psychotic physics.

PLUS, he demonstrates a new Universal Law of Rotation, and opens up several fundamental new areas of investigation.

His book is certainly the best history of physics written to date, and also just happens to include the first workable UNIFIED "FIELD" THEORY, so long and SO unsuccessfully sought by Einstein and countless other physicists. And guess what, just like our friend Occam predicted so long ago, IT'S REALLY SIMPLE, and actually understandable!

["NOW how much would you pay?"]

As an added bonus, his theory provides the conceptual framework for practical exploration of the possibilities of "free" energy, anti-gravity, and perhaps even Faster Than Light travel.

His book is the dazzling wavefront flash of the supernova of understanding in physics.

Of course, being a complete rank amateur, he has several huge and competely unfair advantages over Professional Physicists such as Einstein, who have been unable to remotely approach his accomplishments in many lifetimes of subsidized research: *He's completely self taught [starting with English as a middle-aged refuge].

*He read the entire history of physics, and worked on his theory for 50 years, [after coming home from work], before he ever published a single word.

*He never got paid for being stupid, publishing inane drivel about bad theories, massaging egos, ignoring obvious facts, or parroting the politically co-rectum party line.

*In fact, he never got paid at all! He didn't have ANY corporate or taxpayer money to waste. He couldn't afford to do any frivilous research. This COST HIM huge amounts. HE funded ALL his own research. [He's an amateur, remember.]

*He's not bought, paid for, or owned. He's his own man. He thinks for himself. He is accountable to no faculties [with or without, fun intended], no grant funders, no chairmen of departments, no research directors, no corporate boards, no weapons project adminstrators, no government officials, and no other smug trendy know-nothing idiots with impressive titles and salaries, BUT NO CLUE.

*He was driven purely by the desire for understanding, and the insane determination to find it in spite of all obstacles and the obvious failure of everyone else in known history.

NO ONE ELSE WAS CAPABLE!

If you always wanted to understand physics, this is your golden opportunity.

If you loved Feynman . . . Rado will make you weep uncontrollably with joy!

If you are at all interested in physics, PLEASE check out his web site at:

http://www.aethro-kinematics.com/

Read his on-line essays. Follow some links. Buy and read his book. He'll blow your mind . . . . . . clear out of decaying sink-vortex orbit!

May he live long and laugh forever!

Great selection of composers
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-06-20
Maurice Hinson always produces great editions of classical music, and this is no different. His Anthology of Baroque Keyboard Music offers the early-advanced pianist a wonderful collection of music. Regrettably, most pianists are only familiar with the keyboard music of Baroque composers like JS Bach, Handel, and Scarlatti. And of course, these were masters and should be studied thoroughly. But Hinson presents little-performed composers like D'Anglebert, Daquin, Corelli, Kuhnau, and a host of others. This itself is worth the price of the book.

What is more, he does give hints on interpretation, giving extensive notes on each composer and piece. He also gives suggestions for the execution of ornaments as well as an enlightening short history of Baroque music.

The only negative thing I could say--and it's not negative enough to drop my rating from 5 to 4 stars--is that, if this book is truly for the early-advanced student, more fingerings should have been given. A student of that level may not be able to get through some of the more difficult pieces. Of course, Hinson assumes that the budding pianist is studying with a good teacher who will help in this area.

In short, the book offers a good selection of composers and invaluable tips. It's worth every cent.

An Amateur's Guide to the Messier Objects, Volumes I and II
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-06-25
These two slim volumes contain all the information you need to find all of the Messier objects easily. Well, almost. You also need a basic star atlas to get you to the fields where the instructions begin and a polar-aligned, equatorially mounted telescope. This is because the instructions rely on right-angle moves in right ascension and declination (no vague instructions like "Now go 3/5 of the way northeast from mu to near omicron..."). The author carefully worked out the instructions for finding each object using a 4 1/4 inch Newtonian telescope. They have been successfully field tested by many amateurs.

Regarding the low price, the author comments on the Memphis Astronomical Society's web page: "While this book was written and published in the mid 60's, we have checked and everything still works......the price is a hold over from those days as well. Please don't let the price fool you. The printing was donated so all of the money goes to our Observatory project."

These books are an incredible bargain.

Something for Everyone
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-10-12
America's All-Time Favorite Piano Pieces is an outstanding book compiled and edited by Amy Appleby. This amazing collection contains over 160 familiar piano favorites which will appeal to all intermediate and advanced piano players. Every selection is enjoyable to play and worth while learning. There are Classical gems from Bach, Beethoven and Mozart, etc. There are Romantic favorites from Brahms, Chopin, Debussy, Liszt, Mendelssohn, Schubert, Schumann, and Tchaikovsky. Some of the difficult compositions have been transposed into easier keys for the less advanced students to play. Yet, every melody sounds so professional.

About one half of the book is devoted to American composers such as John Philip Sousa and George M. Cohan. There are sections of jazz, orchestral themes, novelty solos, hymns and celebrations.

The book is attractive with its patriotic cover and easy to read. It is bound with a plastic comb so there is no bending of the binding to keep the book open. The notes are clearly written and not squashed together making it visually pleasing. As a music teacher, I have never seen such an impressive compilation of music literature.

I highly recommend this very reasonably priced book to every piano student.

I first utilized this book back as an undergraduate student in 1961. It was great then and it is just as good now. Better, actually because the spiral binding makes it easier to use, xerox from, etc. The drawings are clear and the coverage excellent.

GOOD INTRO TO THE RHYTHMS OF AFRICA, BALI AND INDIA
Helpful Votes: 20 out of 20 total.
Review Date: 2000-06-08
This is a very good book for those who are interested in World music and/or fusion music and want to be able to play all those beautifull and often complex rhythms that one hears in that type of music.

The first chapter is about the Rhythms from West Africa, it has a clear chapter on polyrhythms and a formula to figure them out. Chapter two deals with the rhythms from Bali, the one you will hear in Gamelan music, and chapter Three deals with Indian Rhythms, Both from North and South India.

And then in the fourth and final chapter one mixes all that rhythm knowledge to create new patterns, hence the name Future Possibilities.

If you do all the exercices in the book you are well one your way to play and understand the rhythms that masters like Trilok Gurtu and Glen Velez play.

Also recomended are Rhythm book authors like Reinhard Flatischler, Alan Dworsky, Sule Greg Vilson, Peter Magadini and Tom Klower.

See also the videos by Airto Moreira, Alex Acuna, Kalani and Paulo Mattioli.
