I took a chance when ordering this book but it turned out the very best book on the subject. This book has both order and a extremely well thought out plan. Both Scientific and reaches to common sense, which Barbara courageously enters into. I don't care what type of rehabilitaion you offer, this book will help. By all means. I downloaded a free sheet music sample of Rain at Ghost Dance Canyon Trail at [the artist's website] and liked it so much I purchased the book and CD. The eleven solos in this book are as much fun to play as they are to listen to. It is great to find new music to play that is uplifting and beautiful. I also enjoy the descriptions of each piece which help me imagine these scenic spots as I play. If you play piano, you will love these solos!

"This is the way I heard the beauty and grandeur of the Shawnee National Forest in my days there." ~Zola Van

If you enjoy listening to the inspiring music by Zola Van on her CDs, you can now play her music with the sheet music of her compositions. The pieces convey joy, anticipations and exhilaration. There are also a few times filled with sadness, but overall all the selections make your heart soar as you take a hike across 88 keys.

Zola has a deep understanding of nature and captures a majestic beauty in her piano solos. Now you can play all 11 original compositions or ever order this as a companion to her CD. There are a number of headnotes (similar to the liner notes) on each composition explaining her inspiration for each solo.

You might also enjoy: "A Coloring Book for the Journey," also based on the CD by Zola Van. Children can color in Monarch butterflies or color in a picture of the Barred Owl at Panther's Den.

You can read the complete column at www.donmcnay.com but I wrote the July 25, 2004 column about this book.

Glen Rogers, 'Road Dog"

Officer Krupke, you've done it again.
This boy don't need a job, he needs a year in the pen.

-West Side Story

I just finished reading the book "Road Dog" (Federal Point Pub.) about the life of serial killer Glen Rogers. The book was written by former Richmond Register writer Stephen Combs and Cincinnati Enquirer columnist John Eckberg.

It is a fascinating book and especially interesting to people in this region. Rogers was captured in Madison County in 1995 at the end of a nationwide manhunt. He spent time in Richmond's jail. Familiar names like Commonwealth's Attorney Tom Smith, Jailer Ron Devere, Judge Bill Jennings, Judge Bill Clouse and Attorney General (now Congressman) Ben Chandler are part of the story.

The authors write about bureaucratic turf battles and mistakes that allowed Rogers to stay free and do his damage. Rogers should have been stopped after his first known murder in Ohio but really Rogers should have been stopped very early. Rogers was able to go through life believing that laws did not apply to him.

Rogers was a good looking, smooth talking guy. Although he was constantly in trouble, he was able to avoid serious jail time with his personality and cunning.

Since I have never had charm or good looks, I have always been envious of people who do. Sometimes, I wonder if charm and good looks are actually a curse. Charming people can believe they don't need to work as hard as other people. They think they can turn on the charm and get out of every problem.

When I started my career in the financial planning business, I knew that my looks and charm were not going to get me anywhere, so I focused on education and knowledge. I was used to rejection. It never bothered me when people said no as I had heard people say no in other aspects of my life.

I worked with a lot of polished and charming people whose careers failed. They thought they could get by on charm but people put their money with someone they have confidence in, not someone they like. Investors kept turning down the charmers for better informed advisors.

It was the first time in their lives these charming people had ever had faced rejection and they could not deal with it. They got frustrated and quit. If they had learned at a young age to overcome rejection with hard work and knowledge, they would have been better off.

Rogers was a woman hater but he also knew his looks and personality would attract women to him. Many of his murders occurred when he lured a woman back to his hotel room or developed a romantic relationship. He knew he could use his charm to get what he wanted, be it good or evil.

I had a high school friend who spent years trying to lure women to go anywhere with him. He was not charming and rarely was successful. The irony is that my friend would have been loving while Rogers brutally murdered the women he attracted.

If Rogers had learned at a young age that he needed more than charm, he might have developed other talents. Since he went through life thinking laws did not apply to him, he broke bigger and bigger ones. Now people are dead and he is on death row.

A certain amount of self confidence is needed for people to be successful. Most entrepreneurs and successful business people are those who knew when to go against conventional wisdom and have the confidence to do it. In a way, they are going against the rules that society has dictated.

While successful people make decisions after working hard and educating themselves, others like Rogers whose develop confidence that is not based on real knowledge or hard work. Rogers never developed any skill beyond being able to talk his way in and out of trouble. He lived from minute to minute and crossed the line to be a murderer.

If he had learned some other skill besides his charm and looks, there might have been more people alive and one less Road Dog.

Well-paced non-fiction story of an isolated serial killer who could be totally devoid of feeling, ruthless one moment and completely charming the next.

Reads like a detective novel, in that it flows nicely, but it's better than fiction.

Using sagas, so called "myth", archaeological finds and first hand historical sources Davidson constructs Norse Pagan belief and customs pertaining to death, funeral customs, the afterlife, the spirit world, conception of the soul, necromancy and more.

Once again I'm blown away by Davidsons work. This actually is most likely her best book and thats saying a lot coming from me. Ellis-Davidson was strictly an academic and was not a Heathen as far as I know but if your an Odinist this and Davidsons Myths and Symbols in Pagan Europe should be at the top of your reading list ahead of any of the contemporary "Asatru" writers who are most often heavily influenced by new age, wiccan and judeo-christian ideas. I don't understand why this great book is out of print when inferior books on northern European Heathenry are being published left and right.

Hilda may not be a heathen, but she does do justice to this subject from an academic point of view. THis is required reading by many Heathen/Asatru clergy programs, and should be by all.

Its All In the Cards- These symblos are REALLY SACRED!

"All is mystery; But he is a slave who will not struggle To penetrate the dark veil" Benjamin Disraeli

I have tried for a lifetime to find a copy of the book "Whats Your Card" by Arne Lein.(1973) It is impossible to find one. I then found out that the "Gypsy Bible" was a bible in fact long before it became corrupted by the gypsies themselves to make profits telling fortunes. The followers of this information have always held it to be a sacred book, its symbols sacred symbols. The Rosicrucians (the original Masons) revered it and its 52 "chapters" as true revealers of Gods Laws. Long before the Gypsy Bible there was the Masonic Bible, and long before that, the Little Bible mentioned in the scriptures. And before that?....
There is much higher evidence that carries our cards back to the Atlanteans and the Master teachers who were appointed to save a remnant of the race. While there may be a few among us today who can claim equal rank with the most spiritually minded of them, we may at least give thanks for the revelation of as much of the teaching as we are able to grasp. By using the 52 cards as an innocent pastime does no harm, but we are missing something valuable and important if we regard it only as a pack of cards. The true origin of the Tarot cards is not known; although universally conceded, however, that the teaching was given to wise men of old, divinely appointed as leaders and guides for the seekers of the "Path of Return" The purpose of this teaching was to find a prevention and cure for the one great tragedy that accounts for all the ills of mankind and the world it has lived in from the beginning of time-- what the occultists calls " The Crime of Seperation." We well know that the great departure from the Divine Source of our being followed swiftly on the heels of the Comandments given through the voice of Moses. We are dangerously far from that Source today.
About seventy-five years ago a few members of a secret order were instructed to give out SOME of the knowledge of these Sacred Symbols. Certain advanced students were commisioned to carry on, and it was one of these, far advanced in years at the time, who became the author of this book, Edith L. Randall. Years of intensive study on her part, application, experiment, and incontrovertible proof have produced the enlightenment you will find in these pages.

This is the book that first introduced me to the science of the cards. I was at a friend's house in 1987 when she handed me this book and asked me to look up my card and read about myself. She wanted to know my impression of what it said. I read the short chapter on my birth card and was amazed at how accurate it was. It wasn't very flattering but it was indeed an accurate description of the major issues and personality traits that are mine. What amazed me even more was that there are eight different birthdays that all have the same card as mine. As an astrologer I couldn't imagine how this could actually work. But I had to admit that it pegged me. Now, after writing my own books on this ancient and amazing system, I still recommend this book to those who are studying this system. The language is a bit outdated but the information is still very pertinent. It gives a fairly detailed description of each of the 52 birth cards, a chart for looking up your card and the tools to actually do yearly progressions, though the information on this aspect is very sketchy. The main benefit of this book is the birth card descriptions which reveal a lot of valuable information about our life patterns. This book appears to be the second book ever published on this system. It was published in the early forties and the two authors have since passed away. Florence Campbell, one of the authors, also published one of the all time best books on numerology, Your Days Are Numbered.

Forrest Farmer's Handbook for Janitorial Services, "The Science of Professional Cleaning" is a superb resource. As the supervisor of the Campus Environment Team at a small college in the Midwest, I was looking for a reliable resource to use for the training of the campus cleaning crew. I had checked several that had been recommended but none fit what was needed. When I came across Forrest Farmer's book, I was thrilled. It is exhaustive in its content and yet concise and simple in its presentation. It has met our training needs beyond my expectations.

"Rich Di Giacomo has developed a dozen simulation games covering issues and events in world and US History...All have their foundation in the serious history which they address. Added to this are dramatics, color, and flexibility which readily entice students into the thorny issues raised. Each game can be used on its own, and each contains all you need to play, though many teachers will naturally add still more information, costumes, and other play aids. Debriefing questions and conversations are included for each activity." June 2003

So far I have only road tested the "Roman Emperor Simulation", but in the several days since we played the game, I have been asked each day whether we can play another round! More importantly, in our post-game debriefing students were quite articulate in explaining why each of the major social groups from the game would have had incentives to overthrow an uppity or weakly dominant emperor, and in our continuing study of the decline and fall of the Romans, students have referred back to game-making decisions as ways of understanding the internal and external challenges Roman emperors faced in the waning days of the Empire. I am a considerable fan of the "What If" counterfactual questions at the end of the book. End-of-semester finals approach quickly, and I plan on trying a few of these questions out as a way of encouraging a more entertaining but still historically-grounded review process. One final word -- as I was preparing to use this book in class, I had a few questions about the game. I emailed the author, and he responded quickly and with very complete answers. Student recommendations, the What-If extras, and good customer service (!) make this a quality product.
