If you are really serious about the Local cuisine that has developed over the last 100 years in Hawaii by the interaction of japanese, chinese, korean, filipino, portuguese, and puerto rican immigrant laborers living in "the camps" with native Hawaiians and haole managers, this is the book. Or on the other hand, if you had a great "plate lunch" in Hawaii and want to know how to make chicken long rice, spam musubi, or yaki manju - pie crust cookies filled with sweet black beans - this is the book.
When I was born in 1950, my parents lived in Waikapu camp on Maui, where my father was a County Agricultural Extension Agent (semi-fresh off the Iowa farm by way of war in the South Pacific, with Marine training in Hawaii.) According to my Iowa farm mother, after one month she bought a rice pot and never looked back, except for Sunday dinners. The women and men who worked on the semi-yearly versions, of which this book is a compilation, were the friends and co-workers of my parents, and taught them to cook these recipes. This book contains a whole history of mutual assimilation and appreciation of the working-class "mixed plate" that is Hawaii "ono grinds."

My husband's family is from Maui so I have had the privilege of enjoying many of these recipes (what a blessing to have a husband who cooks!). At first, when I read through them I thought the combinations of ingredients sounded bizarre (Pacific Rim Cuisine meets Down Home Cooking), but after actually sampling dish after dish, I'm quite impressed. The recipes are all written by different people (a couple are from my husband's relatives) so there's tremendous variety. If you enjoy creative, experimental (i.e. mad scientist) type cooking, you'll have a lot of fun with this book...or if you just have a diversified palate (or want one), I highly recommend this book to satisfy your tastes. If you're curious about the recipes, email me and I'll send you a couple to try out.

This is an excellent tool for my job as a general music teacher in middle school. Clear and concise directions and very helpful when you just don't have the time to "do it all".

The perfect solution for teachers or independent learners

As a music teacher at a small school with a tiny budget, 60 Music Quizzes was the perfect solution for me. Rather than spending hours and hours creating worksheets and quizzes, the purchase of this inexpensive reproducible book gave me the legal right to make as many copies as I need for my school. The quizzes are great, the answers are in the back, and there are enough of them that I was able to choose some to use as practice sheets instead of graded quizzes. Next I can't wait to get the companion book, Ready to Read Music. Thanks to the author--please keep the reproducible music learning tools coming!

Victor Croizat, a retired Marine Colonel, has written an excellent history of the LVT (Landing Vehicle Tracked). From its original purpose as a rescue vehicle known as the “alligator” and designed by Donald Roebling of Florida, it was modified and pressed into service as a tracked cargo carrier in WW II. From this modest logistic beginning at Guadalcanal and Bougainville, a handful of visionaries began to see the craft’s full potential. The reefs at Tarawa prove to be the watershed event for the LVT. When tide and coral prevented the Higgins Boats (LCVP) from bring men ashore, the LVT merely lumbered forward, carrying men and material where the Higgins Boat could not go. From this point forward, in the Pacific Theater at least, the LVT and its many variations became a key element in every amphibious assault. From the Gilberts to Kwajalein in the Marshalls to Saipan, Tinian and Guam in the Marianas and on to Peleliu, Iwo Jima and Okinawa, the landing craft of choice was clearly the LVT. By war’s end, over 18,000 had been produced.

Tactics evolved and each island invasion incorporated lessons learned from the ones that proceeded. The familiar pattern developed quickly. After increased naval and air craft bombardment, the rocket firing gunboats, LCI(G)s, would cross the line of departure. Following closely behind were the armored versions of the LVTs, firing as they lead the troop carrying LVTs ashore. Once the assault troops were ashore, the LVTs reverted to their cargo carrying role, bring ammunition, water and supplies to land and carrying the wounded to hospital ships. Several continued carrying men inland hundreds of yard engaging the enemy with their four MGs as the situation demanded. The armored LVTs would then protect the flanks, firing their 37mm and 75mm canons. Having been found too light to serve as tanks, they would be ashore deployed as self-propelled guns, assisting the artillery batteries or on the reefs serving guard duty.

The book traces the evolution of the vehicle and the tactics utilized in a logical fashion by following the chronology of the War in the Pacific. Two concluding chapters deal briefly with the LVT in Korea and Viet Nam and the state of amphibious operations as they existed in 1989, when the book was printed. In this final chapter, the ancestry of the modern amphibious vehicle is clearly traceable to the Roebling “Alligator”, the modest LVT....

Of the 34 major landings during WW II where the LVTs were used, all but 4 took place in the Pacific. Of these few others, three involved river crossings and North Africa. Given their extreme versatility, the added ½" steel protection, the armored versions providing close support at the moment men are most vulnerable, and the ability of the vehicle to carry troops across the 400 yards of open beach and barbed wire, one has to question why they were not used at Normandy. Croizat does not address this beyond saying that in the ETO "...the amtrac was not needed to land assault troops from the sea."

One suspects that the men of Co. A, 116th, might feel otherwise.

This DVD is terrific. I have taken Quark and Illustrator training at Noble Desktop. It was great, but I couldn't afford the price of a 3rd class. This DVD was just about as good as being there. They have a demonstration, then a note to tell you to do an exercise in the workbook -- just like they do in their classes. Overall, outstanding. And Dan is a great instructor!

I've been tinkering around with photoshop for awhile, and I knew a little, but I still didn't feel comfortable. I didn't want to take a class because it was expensive and I was a little afraid of being the slowest one in class. I looked over some books at the bookstore, they were pretty cheap, but I wasn't convinced that I will be able to get through it without getting stuck or confused. So I decided I would try a DVD. I made the right choice. This DVD walks you through each excercise on your computer screen, then you do it yourself from the step by step workbook. And when I got stuck I just watched it again, and figured out my problems. After the first excercise I had already learned so much than I knew before. GREAT for beginners like me. I'm no computer wizard but now I feel like a photoshop wizard, and I'm comfortable enough to tackle any idea.

You may look at the $75.00 price and see that it has 1/5 of the pages of the bigger Photoshop bibles out there, and you might think it's a rip off. NOT AT ALL! This is the best! I read through countless pages in a Training From The Source manual and after 100 or so pages, I knew little more than how to organize the workspace and use the Adobe Bridge (30 pages worth of Adobe Bridge to be exact).

But with this book after about 20 pages, I was touching up photos, making report covers, masking, adding shadow effects, using layers, and more. This book removes all the crap and gets you going right away without boring you with endless explanations of things you could figure out on your own(ie. how to rearrange the workspace).

This was definitely intended for beginners because it's laid out so clearly there's no need for 500 pages. I bought the Flash 8 and Dreamweaver 8 manu8als from Noble Desktop as well, and they are all on par. I plan on buying the Advanced Photoshop CS2 from them as well. Yeah, it's another $75.00 for that, but who cares, I'M ACTUALLY LEARNING THE PROGRAM! When money comes second to fulfilling your dreams of graphic design, put the rest of the bull**** aside and buy the Step by Step series from Noble Desktop!

Great, clear instruction!

After looking a bunch of other Photoshop books I settled on this one and am very glad I did. So many Photoshop books are giant reference type manuals that I would never read through. I wanted some way to teach myself how to use the program and this book really was what I was looking for. The step by step instructions are very clear and walked me through the program in a logical manner. It's a very hands-on approach to learning and every exercise was very suited to things I've always wanted to do, but never quite knew how. I didn't know much at all about Photoshop before, but now I feel like I can tackle much more professional projects. I would highly recommend this to someone who really wants to learn all the basics of the program. Yes!

Landform, structure, and lithography aerial interpretation
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2005-04-12
This was the book that I used to learn aerial photo interpretation almost 30 years ago- and it still appears to be the best book on the market. We used it in Geology (specifically, geomorphology- the study of landforms) but it also has applications in geography, conservation, forestry, and surveying.

The best part of the book is its organization by type of landform: wind action (dunes), ground water (Karst topography), mass movements (landslides, slumping, and flows), glaciers, effects of glaciation (U-shaped valleys, moraines, kettles, drumlines, cirques, etc.), lakes, marshes, and abondoned shorelines, desert land forms, marine coastlines, stream deposits (meanders, oxbow lakes, braided channels, and deltas), stream erosion and erosion cycles, volcanic features, and meteor crators. There is also a section on lithology (descriminating of rock types.) In addition there are sections on vegitation types, soils, and cultural features and urban areas. All of these subject areas are illustrated by multiple examples.

You will of course need a stereoscope to use this book, but the inexpensive student model will work just fine. In fact, the vertical exageration really makes the features "pop" out- even to the untrained eye. You will be able to spot most types of landforms from the air after studying this book, as well as, outcrops of strata and structures. This is a big help in preliminary mapping- and prospecting- surveys.

An African faces European Anthropology
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2000-08-28
Many European and American anthropologists have argued that doubts on interpretation of cultures could only be made clear by autochthonous studies, written by autochthonous scholars. Okot p'Bitek represents the raise of African voice against European anthropology. Having studied with Evans-Pritchard, his work is a critical review of the misrepresentation and misinterpretation of African culture and religion in European studies. With reference to the study of African religions, he argues that European scholarship is responsible for what he calls "hellenization of African Gods", and for the creation of concepts such as "animism", which do not correspond to African reality: and he firmly affirms that there are no "animists" in Africa. This book forces the reader to consider anthropological studies in relation to the cultural and religious background of European scholars, thus stimulating a critical history of anthropological thought. Its only limit is that, being p'Bitek an African by birth, but an European by education, he is nevertheless conditioned by Western culture. So that the existence of an "African religion" is never debated: nor it is the necessity of recognizing a "religion" in a "culture", which has its origins in Christian culture.
