Simple, great, workable and fast recipe book!

This book is all about Fast, tasty, semi-homemade recipes. This book reinstates the fact that recipes don't have to be long, tedious and complicated. There is room for imaginations. You can always add ingredients and spices if you have them. I have tried lot of quick and easy recipes for my friends and their kids when they drop by unannounced and they all always loved it. I even gifted this book to my friend's son who went to college. He loves to cook and being in college he enjoyed this book because it was fast, easy and not expensive. He still says that he'll treasure this book just for those memories when he went to college. Even though, it says 400, you can make way more than that with slight variations. That is the reason I like this book. I am a Chef myself and mostly concentrate on Vegetarian food. I have taken so many ideas from this book, its just unbelievable. I am also an avid cook book collector. This book is really good. Hope you guys enjoy it too. Good eats!!!

I love this book! It is full of incredibly simple ideas, all of which are based on convenience items. We adored a recipe called "Beef Roast with Vegetables" that made use of a ready-made beef au jus. It was done in just a few minutes, but tasted like it had been cooking all day. And if that's not enough to entice you, you should know that very few recipes involve more than six ingredients. Just be warned that the recipes sure aren't low-fat!

A very fine method to learn to sing

I was very fortunate to find Larra years ago. To study with her was quite an experience. She was like no other. I highly recommend her techniques, especially for those who have problems as I did when I came to see her. She could fix problems like magic. I would never rely on a book like this alone though. Use it as a guide to what a good teacher should be doing. The best part about this technique as others have stated, is how natural it is. That is the best way to avoid problems now and in the future.

Larra could still sing beautifully well into her 80's after a long worldwide career. This alone attests to her ability to keep the voice in good health with her methods for a very long time.

A truly great book on voice training
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2003-07-23
This book has so much information I don't know where to start. The author was one of the greats as far as teaching voice and her students have gone on to sing professionally in very demanding capacities without vocal injuries and with beautiful sound - and isn't that what vocal training is all about?

There is a chapter on basic care of the voice - stuff I never knew in 8 years of lessons - don't subject yourself to radical changes in temperature, don't use numbing sprays in your throat, etc. There is another chapter on what to do for vocal nodes, another deals with diction (that chapter alone improved my tone and changed the responation to more in the mask - it was amazing).

For the voice teacher, there are exercises for developing a healthy technique in the students. It covers from beginning to advanced and there are some great chapters on breathing and Alexander Technique - which is taught at most of the Conservatories as a part of the training of serious students of voice. Very informative and has some good resources listed for further research.

Like the guy said in teh review of the previous edition, these books are not bound very well but he woujldn't be so upset about that if it wasn't one of those books you have to keep referring to because the information is so good. If it was a lesser book, then he wouldn't want to open it every 5 minutes and it wouldn't matter what the binding was like.

A valuable Book with a long sought solution.

"Improve Your Ability To Speak English" has focused on the single greatest cause for mistakes in the English language by the average American, and that is "ignorance of case." Whether to use who/whom, he/him, they/them, "between you and me" vis a vis "between you and I" all depend upon understanding the difference between "subjective case" and "objective case." Sino Chika teaches us how to do this without having to relearn grammar. He uses the mistakes of politicians, TV news reporters, actors and actresses, to illustrate the kinds of mistakes made and demonstrates remarkably simple methods for correcting them. Helpful chapters on the misuse of the expression "Aren't I..." and on the proper pronunciation of commonly mispronounced words, make the book invaluable to anyone wishing to avoid sounding stupid!

This book really hits the nail on the head! I wish every radio and TV announcer, and every student who desires to be one, would study this quick read! The background and rules make understanding proper language usage, interesting and easy. We need our culture to be exposed to the influences of educated and intelligent sounding News Anchors, etc. This book will do the trick. Please do more to push this book!

Great Book!

This book is very helpful. The explanations are clear, concise, and easy to understand. Using this book I was able to understand not just the rules we use for English grammer but also why the rules make sense.

Because the book not only explains the rules but also the reasons behind them, you can understand the logic associated with them. Once you know the logic, it's easy to construct grammatically correct sentences.

The Whistle Stop Cookbook is a delightful compendium of original recipes from the Irondale Cafe in Irondale, Alabama. Cafe (dubbed the "Whistle Stop" by Fannie Flagg, and owned since 1973 by Mary Jo and Bill McMichael). Mary Joy has compiled a spiral bound cornucopia of good eating recipes ranging from Buttermilk Biscuits, Skinless Fried Chicken, Cheese Grits, Refreshing Scallop Salad, Country Ham and Red-Eye Gravy, and Southern Corn Pudding to Mississippi Mud Cake, Hot Pineapple Salad, Marinated Cabbage Slaw, Banana Split Cake, Peanut Brittle Sauce, and Green Tomato Pie. Whistle Stop Cookbook is a very welcome addition to any family kitchen collection.

The Irondale Cafe Cookbook is a must for every cook, young or old. The recipes are easy to follow and use ingredients that most of us keep on hand. The macaroni and cheese and rice pudding especially remind me of wonderful childhood memories that I was unable to duplicate until I found this cookbook. My copy is well worn. The recipes are full of old fashioned flavor but can be prepared in a short amount of time. This book could make a terrific cook out of someone who doesn't know how to boil water.

A friend of ours from Germany visited for 3 weeks this summer and brought this book. He only has an electric piano so he was excited to play it on a regular piano. The music was so good that I had to get a copy! It is one purchase I don't regret!

Highest Recommendation for Beginner to Intermediate

I believe this to be the best piano book ever published for easy to intermediate piano. Denes Agay (now dead) is a trusted name for authentic and easy-to-read transcription. The song selection includes the best pieces, including Bach's Minuet in G, Beethoven's Fur Elise, and so many other great songs. The songs range from somewhat easy to intermediate, and the techniques needed vary, so you can use this book for many lessons. I cannot emphasize enough how great of a collection this is.

For years my two daughters have played songs from this book for lesson, tests, and enjoyment. Our copy is so worn out, and yet they keep going back to it again and again. We have saved much money with this one large collection. This book is worth the money several times over. Highest recommendation. Must have.

This book is well edited and fun. It provides enjoyment and has great songs. These include Claire De Lune by Claude Debussy; Rustle of Spring by Christian Sinding; Fur Elise by Ludwig von Beethoven; Prelude in C major by Johann Sebastian Bach and many other great classics. It is apperently well thought out and concise. But what did you expect, it is after all by the great Dr. Denes Agay!

Joy does work on Mathematica 5.1, however, the current version, and it runs on both Mac and PC platforms (OS X for the Mac and Windows XP for the PC).

Joy is a wonderful compilation of program-based notebooks that shorten the time-to-use Mathematica dramatically, for both novice and computer-savvy students and learners. The manual is well-written, visually attractive, and uncluttered.

Joy of Mathematica makes it far easier to graph (2- and 3-D, parametric, polar coordinates, and more), manipulate expressions (simplify, solve), differentiate and integrate functions, work with series and sequences, vector fields, matrices, multiple variables, and so forth.

Writing adjuncts to Mathematica is something of a cottage industry, and several other Mathematica-based programs can help: Calculus Wiz (for high school and college students), Explorer, and Navigator, for instance.

Wolfram Research (publisher of Mathematica) wants to penetrate the secondary-level educational market and is offering very attractive site licenses to schools and individual licenses to students at those schools. It is not clear whether the publishers of Joy will offer a similar site license and individual student purchase rate.

Finally, it is not known at this point whether the authors will re-optimize Joy for Mathematica 5.1 version.

Making Mathematica a Joy to Use

"The Joy of Mathematica" really does make Mathematica software a "Joy" to use, and to learn. Users of Mathematica know and love the powerful capabilities of this excellent mathematical software environment for symbolic and numeric computation with incredible support for 2D and 3D graphics. Students and professionals considering adopting Mathematica are often awestruck by the enormous range of mathematical capabilities suddenly put at their fingertips. However, Mathematica is not a Joy to use, as each powerful command (and there are many) is accompanied by so many parameters and modifiers (all necessary), requiring a not so Joyful syntax. "The Joy of Mathematica" comes to the rescue, and indeed, it is a real JOY to use! "Joy" comes in the form of a book, an easy to use tutorial and guide, with an accompanying CD. The software on the CD installs easily, and modifies your own Mathematica "front end" environment by providing very useful and well organized pull-down menus which launch diaglog boxes. The diaglog boxes are great! They remind the user which parameters and choices need to be specified in the context of a particular Mathematica command. They provide immediate examples for the student to try. They output clear summaries of the entered requests, organize the computed output, and allow the user to view the actual Mathematica commands which "Joy" issues. This in turn helps the user learn Mathematica's arcane command syntax (if you want to bother). "Joy" provides the student and experienced user with the menu structure we all wish we had when using Mathematica. "Joy" is really a terrific teaching and learning tool for college students of science and engineering, and a great way to bring great math software into the hands of high school students. It's a "Joy" for me and my son, and it will work for you too.

It was my boyfriend's in college cookbook and his younger sister went to J.T. Morgan Academy. When we parted ways, I took the cookbook. (Most definitely the best thing from the relationship!!!) Cookbook better than the relationship and probably the only reason I glad I was ever in that relationship!!!!

Seriously, a great cookbook! Wonderful southern recipes with old fashioned as well as modern ideas. Great pound cake recipe (old fashioned pound cake - I add vanilla). Thanksgiving and Christmas in my family are not complete without the refrigerator roll recipe.

A very informative book. Talks about a variety of musical styles and gives exercise suggestions for practicing them. Also gives information on microphone technique. This is more in-depth than most vocal books. I really appreciated the depth and breadth of vocal information.

This is a focussed and well organized manual on singing. Dr. Combs deep understanding of the voice is made evident through concise explanation and facilitated where necessary through reference to other more detailed publications(including an annotated bibliography). I use this guide in my vocal pedagogy class along with Vennard and Miller (both of which do not address the unique aspects of the Pop/Broadway Singer). College students tell me that it provides a more "user-friendly" description which helps in their more detailed study.

It is a great and complete guide of singing technique

As a singing teacher of non classical music, I can certainly suggest that this is the best book I have read on this matter. It is really impossible to find a book where classical singing is not envolved. And I can assure you that there are great differences between both techniques...!
