Since moving into a new house, I've been devouring every landscape book on the market, in hopes of acquiring information that will enable me to transform the weed patch and ugly bush that are the only features of my front yard into something beautiful. This is absolutely the best of the "how-to" landscape books! A real laboratory manual of landscape design, this book avoids the two major failures of many others on the market. First, unlike those that offer page after page of photos of beautifully manicured lawns from which I am expected to magically intuit the rudiments of landscape design, this book assumes rightly that I know absolutely nothing about landscaping. Then, the author uses clear diagrams and graphs to gently but methodically guide me through all stages of a design and implementation process that will enable a previously clueless me to transform my ugly view into a photo-worthy scene. Second, this book avoids the weaknesses of landscape books that so overwhelm me with the theoretical intricacies of landscape design that I am tempted to throw in the trowel and hire the work out (perhaps the authors of those books wanted me to do that all along?). By contrast, this book sequences in clear and concrete language the questions requiring decision that I will confront, lays out a range of possible actions, and then offers specific suggestions (with diagrams and graphs) for implementation. This book is sturdy and it needs to be. Rather than grace your coffee table, it will be with you as you get down and dirty in your yard with tape measure, string, and clipboard to work through the pages of this book on your way to something beautiful.

No stone unturned!

This book takes you through every step you will need to landscape your yard and garden. The format is somewhat like a workbook but with a ton of useful information presented in a way that makes it easy for even a "brown-thumb" like me to understand. I especially like how the author left room for notes and grids for designing the garden. Pair this with "The Encyclopedia for Organic Gardening" and you will need no other gardening literature.

This is an excellent book and I highly recommend it, WITH 1 CAVEAT: ALL of the "Used and New" sellers are charging about 5 TIMES OVER what the author, Kathrynne Holden, asks for this SAME BOOK on her own web site. SAVE YOUR MONEY and visit www.nutritionyoucanlivewith.com OR just Google "Kathrynne Holden" and save TONS of money if you decide to purchase this exzcellent book.

One of the most enlightening books I've read regarding Parkinson's Disease. Focusing on nutrition and what your body is going through with PD, it is a primer for what to watch out for, how to deal with dietary challenges, and what to expect. This book will help you make a nutritional game plan, and prepare a pre-emptive strike against most of the common surprises PD throws at you. I don't suffer from PD - I'm a family member. It was great for me and great for my family PD-er. I recommend this book to everyone interested in living better with Parkinson's.

This book has proven a godsend for my mom (who suffers from Parkinsons) and myself. The information is sound, easy to follow, and presented with ample background. I like the writer's approach to nutrition (i.e., good flavor is essential). Her knowledge of Parkinsons is impressive. I can't begin to tell you how many questions it answers. I consider this book an essential part of my mom's medical "team."

I purchased Vol. 1 & 2 of this series in hopes of helping my elementary & middle school children build up their vocabulary. The series has exceeded my expectations in terms of relevance, ease of use, and helpful suggestions on how to get the kids excited and interested in the vocabulary. I already find my kids applying the knowledge during dinnertime conversations and in their daily interactions. Highly recommended.

Have bought quite a few books and dvd's that should have been avoided. They'll sell a dvd lacking anything resembling a book for reference. Levenson did a good job with this one; 60 pages of licks/solos tabbed out. I find myself using the book to improve technique while I play along with cd. Great book for beginners. I wish I was this satisfied with all guitar books/dvd's I have bought off amazon.

Barry's book has been a perfect choice to start me down the road of not just learning Blues guitar techniques, but to get me thinking about and trying some improvisation (the backing tracks on the CD are great for this). The solo's Barry composed for this book are great fun to play and have kept me in front of the amp practicing even when my poor fingers said stop. The solos contain a lot of "building-blocks" that you can leverage against in your own improvisations. (Now if I can only get some vibrato on top of those string bends).

One of the most useful books I've used

Review Date: 2005-08-26
Without a doubt, Barry Levenson's book is one of my favorites books for improving my guitar playing. The book is deceivingly simple. It consists of 14 very well crafted blues solos.
The solos are presented on the CD, and the CD also contains the backing tracks without the lead guitar so that the reader can practice playing the solos. Each solo is 12-bars long (or short :-) )
One of the things that makes the book a great tool is that the solos are explained bar by bar, with Barry providing a brief introduction, information on the different techniques he's using (e.g., vibrato, rakes, bends, slides, etc.), as well as explanations regarding his choice of notes.
I use the tab as a guide, but end up relying more on my ear. I also adapt the solos to fit the sounds I'm after. For example, instead of sliding to a minor 3rd on the first string, I often choose to bend up to it. The effect is slightly different.
Another thing to consider is that while it may be easy to play the 14 solos, the real benefit of this book IMO is that I have started to think more about note choice, and can visualize my target notes on the fingerboard more easily now. Just learning and playing the solos is not as beneficial to the student.
I'm halfway through the book, and one thing I have noticed is that I enjoy going back to each of the previous solos I have learned. I play each a couple of times while thinking about Barry's explanations, and then move on to the next. This has made my process slower, but I'm not complaining, I'm actually thoroughly enjoying this book. An additional benefit is that this "thinking" approach can be transferred into any style of music.
Highly recommended to the advanced beginner, intermediate, and advanced guitarist who wants to bring their playing to a higher level. For those looking into flashier playing, look elsewhere. This one is more about taste and maturity. Highly recommended.

We bought this a year ago, not a week goes by where one of our band members doesn't look through it and say wow, I didn't know this was in here. Some of the chord progressions are different from other song books, but it leaves you with plenty of room to play. For some of the unfamiliar songs I was able to put into Guitar Pro so we can learn it quickly. We had two song books to pick from and we went with this one. We'll by the other this coming year. Between them we'll have over 900 songs and I'm considering getting the hymnal fake book for when we mix in with the traditional service.

This is a fake book format, G clef for melody and some harmony parts and chord symbols over staff, no bass clef. The songs are transcribed so they fit on one or two pages. No page turning. Not ideal if you are a pianist that is used to looking at two staffs for playing.

An invaluable tool for the praise and worship musician. I am constantly amazed when I think of a song to play, I look it up and its almost always there. It has the best of all the PW from the last few years (Hillsongs, Delerious, Passion, Vinyare, Integrity, Maranatha: pretty much everything) in good condensed fake format (melody lines and chords only, which is all you ever need) with almost everysong fitting on one page, some two to a page. Well worth the price for keyboardists and guitarists alike!

Home Comfort

Review Date: 2008-06-30
This book is not only comfort food for the stomach, but for the eyes and soul as well.

When I think of life on the farm I instantly picture a scene from a Norman Rockwell's painting. The simple life, grandma with her big apron on, putting up preserves; delicious smells of home-made bread comming from the kitchen's wood cooking stove. I envision a grandma who's cheeks are flushed like rosey apples, and smiling eyes that sparkle as she's humming a tune.

Think country fairs; tables laden with prize winning preserves, pies, and cakes. Children running between the prized quilts, chasing a goose. The smells, sounds and activities at the fair are simple pleasures and anticipated by country folk every autumn after harvest-time.

If you want to experience the next best thing to being on a farm, read this book. You'll want to experience home cooking from scratch. You'll get the urge to immerse yourself up to your elbows in dough, kneading it into loaves of aromatic bread, or buying bushels of fresh fruit and vegetables from the market so you can preserve them for the winter.

Take a trip down to the farm today in this book. I know it will be used over and over again. The mouth-watering recipes will become favorites with your family and friends.

Happy cooking;
Petra

I wanted to learn how to cook meals my food-loving family could swallow and that I could attempt to learn without losing my mind. Living in the south, I looked and looked for cookbooks that included blue-ribbon recipes for meats and also make vegatables seem to taste better then they really do. Then, low and behold I found the "The Farmers Wife Cookbook." It is just what Grandma would have used in her day! It is also simple and easy (two words every new cook loves). It shows the new cook why appetizers make a meal more enjoyable and that there is a "perfect dressing for every salad"!

Things every one loves to eat are in this book. The recipes are borken down in easy to follow steps that even I could understand. You'll be making Waldorf Salad on Monday and by Friday why not have some Angel Cream Pie or Delicious Doughnuts?!

Buy this! You will love it! And those you cook for will love you and your cooking!

Three years have passed since Rabbi Tracy Cohen had battled against the undead in Arkansas. Her life partner, Jane Weston, felt invisible and worthless in Tracy's life. In fighting the undead Tracy did God's work. How could Jane ever compete with God? Fed up, Jane accepted a TV job elsewhere and left.

Tracy joined an intelligence agency that dealt with the extraordinary. The agency sent Tracy and her small group of fighters to Wako City. The city was torn by racism and the vampires had gathered among a group of Neo Nazis who were preparing to march through a part of the city heavily populated by Holocaust survivors. Tracy's estranged family lived in that part of the city as well. And Tracy needed to see them, needed to forgive them for what they had done to her. This was made even harder since the soulless seemed to be targeting her family.

Jane happened to be in Wako City as well. She noticed the bizarre happenings and just KNEW that Tracy would be the one in town to help out the police, with her golom at her side. Realizing how much she wanted and needed Tracy in her life, Jane began her search in hope of reconciliation.

**** This seems to be book two of a series. I missed book one, but have the third book waiting for me to begin. Even so, I did not feel as though I had been thrown into an abyss. The author did a wonderful job on the characters and the novel had closure. It could be read as a stand-alone book, however, it left me eager to see what the agency throws at Tracy's little group next! Tracy's life is much like the "Twilight Zone". Recommended! ****

We all love fried food. We love it for the flavor; we love it for the crunch. Unfortunately, with the rise of serious health problems like heart disease and diabetes, many of us are forced to forgo our favorite fried foods in order to avoid excess fat. Dietician and nutritionist Elaine Magee, admitted lover of all things fried, shares her approach to healthier fried food in "Fry Light, Fry Right!" This book is aimed at those who are willing to take a chance on a different way of approaching and preparing fried food.

The recipes in "Fry Light, Fry Right!" are all reduced-fat versions of traditionally fried favorites. You will be delighted to find, however, that the fat and calories are the only things that are reduced. The dishes are full of flavor and texture. Even the most devout fried food lover is sure to enjoy Restaurant Cheese Fries, Easy Oven Potato Chips, Oven-Baked Coconut Shrimp with Fresh Pineapple Salsa and Finger-Lickin' Good Chicken. There are even "fried light" desserts, like Spiced Apple Cider Fritters and Mexican Bunuelos.

Each recipe is accompanied by nutritional analyses comparing the traditionally-fried dish to its "fried light" counterpart. You will often be amazed by the reduction in calories, fat and cholesterol when the dishes are prepared using Magee's techniques.

If you have a health problem that necessitates reducing fat in your diet or if you just want to try a more healthful approach to preparing food, I recommend "Fry Light, Fry Right!" It gives you a great way to eat right without feeling deprived.

If you are trying to eat healthy and are tired of grilled chicken this is the book for you. As a lover of all things fried I was willing to try light fried food but didn't hold out much hope. Fact of the matter is the Lightened version of Chicken Fried Steak rivaled ANY restaurant meal I have had, and I have had a LOT of CFS in the last 46 years. I decided to try the Oven Fried Chicken next and again I was not displease. It was great and equally important, it was easy to cook, easy to clean and no oil to dispose of. If you have health issues or just want to cut some fat and calories this is the book for you. And if you have a spouse that needs some help, just don't tell them this is healthy and they will never know the difference. It will be our secret. I guarantee you will not be sorry.

I haven't tried too many recipes yet, but the ones I've used have been great. I fixed the oven fried chicken when my daughter and son-in-law were visiting, and it disappeared in a hurry. There are a number of recipes I plan to use. They are all fairly simple to follow and call for ingredients most people have on hand. The recipes I've tried definitely have great taste while cutting the fat and calories of the original recipes.

This was my first "healthy" cookbook, purchased in 1973. I have used it so much the pages are torn and discolored. There is a dictionary of food, helpful for those who are unfamiliar with such things as "agar-agar, arrowroot flour, carob, gum karaya" etc. Charts of daily intake requirements, wonderful recipes, herb information, food combining rules, and more. The authors were way ahead of their time.

I love this cookbook! Way back in 1968, when the average American was eating white bread, Twinkies and the occasional canned vegetable, the Hurds set down a huge collection of easy, healthful, inexpensive, delicious vegetarian recipes. This book is inspiring on every level, and it is too bad it is out of print. But I know for a fact that at one time it was very popular, so there must be abundant used copies out there. Get one! You will not regret it!
